[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Umbagog Birds (Golden Eagle) From: Benjamin Griffith <bgriffith(AT)gmail.com> Date: 22 Nov 2009 9:02pm Len Medlock, Jason Lambert, Lauren Kras and I spent the day around Umbagog Lake, looking for boreal species. We covered several logging roads in the Umbagog area, as well as a few trails into Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge (LUNWR). We didn't have many finches or most other irruptives, however, we did have a good variety of species, including several boreal specialties. The most excitement came when we spotted a young Golden Eagle soaring over a logging road 0.25 mi west of the LUNWR headquarters. The bird was briefly joined by an immature bald eagle for an excellent comparison of the two species. Highlights: Hooded Merganser - 5 on the Androscoggin between Berlin and Errol Ruffed Grouse - 2 in NH, 1 in ME Great Black-backed Gull - a flock of 86 in Berlin at dusk, seems like a high number for inland Herring Gull - 13 with GBBG Bald Eagle - 3+, 1 adult, 2 immature GOLDEN EAGLE - 1 imm. photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bgriffith/4126811738/ Great Horned Owl - 1 at LUNWR off Mountain Pond Rd Pileated Woodpecker - 1 at LUNWR Black-backed Woodpecker - 2 at LUNWR, 1 or 2 calling elsewhere. Boreal Chickadee - 4+, 3+ in LUNWR, 1 along Greenough Pond Rd Northern Shrike - 1 along Greenough Pond Road Red Crossbill - 1 in Wentworth Location Common Redpoll - 4 along Rte 16 Purple Finch - many throughout Ben Griffith and Lauren Kras Dover, NH
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: FW: eBird Report - Lake Cochichewick, North Andover MA, 11/21/09 From: "Kevin Klasman" <kevinklasman(AT)hotmail.com> Date: 22 Nov 2009 10:52pm I know it's not NH, but I thought everyone might like a look at what may be a partially leucistic Ring-necked Duck. Or is it just a strange molt? Location: Lake Cochichewick, North Andover, MA Observation date: 11/21/09 Number of species: 2 Ring-necked Duck 11 1 possibly leucistic male. Image at http://www.pbase.com/kklasman/image/119640489/medium.jpg Bufflehead 1 Is it unusual to find a Bufflehead with a flock of Ring-necked Ducks? http://www.pbase.com/kklasman/image/119640965/medium.jpg This report was generated automatically by eBird v2(http://ebird.org)
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Umbagog Gray Jays, too From: Len Medlock <lenmedlock(AT)comcast.net> Date: 22 Nov 2009 10:49pm Just an addendum to Ben's post that we crashed a Gray Jay party in the Umbagog area, where three happy little critters frolicked joyfully. http://www.pbase.com/lmedlock/image/119638724/original Another Golden Eagle photo: http://www.pbase.com/lmedlock/image/119638492/original The cone crop is abundant, especially the Black Spruce, and the air perfumed by the sweet scent of healthy fir trees--it was intoxicating.
