Subject: SE NH Sightings 11/25-26 (Eurasian Wigeon, Greater
White-fronted Goose)
From: Benjamin Griffith <bgriffith(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 26 Nov 2009 1:29pm
Lauren Kras and I checked the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Facility
yesterday one last time before it closed for Thanksgiving. Thousands
of gulls were present in the rain, but many cleared out before we
could look through them. The Western Kingbird has NOT been seen since
sunday. Hopefully it's enjoying its winter in sunny Florida right
about now. My father joined us for a thanksgiving morning for a quick
birding trip along the coast.
Highlights:
Rochester - 11/25:
Lesser Scaup - 1
Iceland Gull - 5+ - 2 adults, 1 second-winter and 2 first winter
Lesser Black-backed Gull - 1 third winter
Coast and Great Bay - 11/26:
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE - 1 juvenile continues at Runnymeade Farm
in North Hampton
Canada Goose - about 2000 on Great Bay, many barely identifiable
American Wigeon - 30+ at Sunset Farm on Great Bay
EURASIAN WIGEON - 1 at Great Bay
Greater Scaup - about 500 on Great Bay from Sunset Farm
Horned Lark - 7 at Bicentennial Park

Subject: Thanksgiving Breakfast with the Gray Jays - Caps Ridge
From: "David Govatski" <pondicherry(AT)wildblue.net>

There were two Gray Jay's about a mile up on the Caps Ridge Trail from
Jefferson Notch on a beautiful sunny and warm Thanksgiving morning. I walked
up to treeline and also saw a flock of 32 Bohemian Waxwings feeding on
Mountain Ash berries. Other birds noted included 2 Boreal Chickadees, 4
Red-breasted Nuthatches, 1 Downy Woodpecker, 3 Hairy Woodpeckers and 2
Juncos. There was a sea of clouds in the valley up to 2000 feet in elevation
and a pair of sundogs around the sun for atmospheric phenomenon. Fortunately
no sign of the Brocken Specter which sometimes occurs when you have an
undercast. No hikers noted but I did see several hunters down in the valley.

Subject: Beaver Brook Birds
From: "Fallon, Dan" <Dan.Fallon(AT)stratus.com>
Date: 26 Nov 2009 8:13pm
I stopped at the Maple Hill Barn at Beaver Brook in Hollis today on the
way to Thanksgiving at The Train Station.
I walked the perimeter of the fields to the east and north of the office
but saw only Chickadee and WB Nuthatch. At the top of the hill, a
Barred Owl came out of a group of hemlocks near the Porcupine Trail in
response to my pishing and perched within 20 feet of me (11:45 AM) for
the best look I have ever gotten of a Barred.
Back at the Maple Hill office, things were a bit livelier. Juncos were
everywhere. Also:
Goldfinch - 10+
White Throated Sparrow - 5
Chipping Sparrow - 2
Song Sparrow - 2
Bluebird - 2
Flicker (heard)

Subject: Carolina Wren

Birders
I've been enjoying a Carolina Wren the last few days around the park on
Fogg Dr. in Durham that has turned up so many good birds over the last two
years. Today, when we returned from a morning walk, we discovered that
the wren added itself to the yard list by being in the garage. The
two-year-old was delighted, but the wren gave thanks to see the open doors
and fled the premises.
Yard list 114, house list 1.

Subject: Red-tailed hawk

While I was running in Mine Falls (Nashua) on the trail just east of the
soccer fields, a red-tailed hawk flew across the trail, about 5 feet from me
and about 4 feet off the ground.
