[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: 11/30 Rochester WWTF - probable Thayer's Gull From: Benjamin Griffith <bgriffith(AT)gmail.com> Date: 30 Nov 2009 9:22pm Lauren Kras and I birded the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Facility this morning, hoping for some good gull action. The highlight was a probable juvenile THAYER'S GULL. This bird was on the "Herring-like" end of the spectrum but structure recalled Iceland, with a very rounded head and long-primaried appearance. Plumage features supporting Thayer's included obvious white edges to the primary tips, apparently, uniform pale underprimaries and pale inner webs to the primaries. I'm hesitant to call it for certain because I haven't had a chance to thoroughly look through photos of the bird, and this bird was darker than any juvenile Thayer's I'd ever seen. Lauren or I will post photos some time tomorrow. Other highlights: Lesser Black-backed Gull - 1 first winter/juvenile Iceland Gull - 6 at Rochester, PLUS 3 in Farmington at the Guineafowl Farm Snow Bunting - 2 Ben Griffith and Lauren Kras Dover, NH
