Subject: crossbills in Antrim, red-shouldered hawk in Westmoreland
From: Phil Brown <downtownpab(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 6 Dec 2009 9:40am
While working at Willard Pond Sanctuary in Antrim on Friday, I saw and heard 2
white-winged crossbills flying over Bald Mountain. A nice sign of winter that
has finally arrived.
Before the snow yesterday, while scouting for the Keene CBC, I watched an adult
red-shouldered hawk perched in a front yard on Stonewall Circle in Westmoreland.
Other sightings this week have included a horned grebe and both mergansers at
Spofford Lake, and a large group of common mergansers (53 on Friday) continuing
on the Howe Reservoir in Dublin. Purple finches seem to be scarce in Cheshire
County this year, but I heard a few near the center of Westmoreland.

Subject: R-B woodpecker in Newmarket
From: "Andra J. Crawford" <andra.j.crawford(AT)comcast.net>

We just saw a red-bellied woodpecker eating seeds on the ground on front of
our house. Isn't it a bit late in the season?

Subject: Great Penacook Walkabout
From: "PAMELA HUNT" <biodiva(AT)myfairpoint.net>
Date: 6 Dec 2009 3:44pm
Greetings all,
Today was my last Walkabout for the year, and it also turns out it was the
50th such peregrination since I started this foolishness on the 2005 Concord
CBC. Despite the absolutely gorgeous weather, the birding was a bit sparse,
and I only ended up with 34 species (record low is 33 - twice).
The highlight without question was a single Savannah Sparrow at Morrill's
Farm, presumably the same one that was there a couple of weeks ago. American
Tree Sparrow numbers were up, perhaps reflecting a combination of being later
in the season PLUS the overnight snowfall. That same snowfall may have pushed
Horned Larks and Snow Buntings out, at least from the farm.
The only other observation of note was that ALL the waterfowl (26 Canada
Geese, 1 Am Black Duck, 67 Mallards, and 2 Hooded Mergansers) were all on the
Contoocook River during the morning survey. There was nothing lower on the
Contoocook, on the Merrimack (which was a bit turbulent in places) or at the
ponds at Morrill's Farm.
Stay tuned for January 3, when we'll find out what's changed in a month...
