[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Re: quality of black oil sunflower seeds -Question From: "Fern Woodruff" <fernw(AT)comcast.net> Date: 13 Dec 2009 7:29am Thanks! That is a very informative article. Does anyone know if birdseed comes with a date on the bag? Or is the only way to know you are getting fresh seed to buy at a specialty store? [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Heron in Penacook! From: "PAMELA HUNT" <biodiva(AT)myfairpoint.net> Date: 13 Dec 2009 11:05am Greetings all, My walk around Penacook this morning was capped off by a GREAT BLUE HERON that flew over me as I was going along the canal that seperates The Island from the "mainland." It dropped down and I took a detour to find it sitting on a rock below the cement dam on the Contoocook - where herons are seen with some regularity in the warmer months. This is by far the latest I've ever had a GBH on any of my various foot surveys. My guess is that it was on the move in response to the fairly recent freeze up of lakes and ponds. Also of note on the walk were 2 Red-bellied Woodpeckers and a Cooper's Hawk. Junco numbers have doubled after Wednesday's snowfall presumably pushed them to edges and feeders. Enjoy, Pam Hunt Penacook, NH

Eric will post a trip report later but asked that we post photos. Please visit Jason Lambert's site for others. Kingston in fading light to hope for Black Vulture. We waited and then a mob (murder?) of crows came calling and flew from the pine in the field, and among them was the BLVU. Managed a few lousy photos--good for shape only--as it was harassed by crows and flew out of sight: Black Vulture (it's the larger bird): http://www.pbase.com/lmedlock/image/120253792/original http://www.pbase.com/lmedlock/image/120253807/original Len Medlock Exeter , NH

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Jeffries Pelagic From: "Eric Masterson" <emasterson(AT)plcnh.org> Date: 13 Dec 2009 8:24pm Thirteen folks boarded the UNH Gulf Challenger for a five hour pelagic to Jeffries Ledge, including a swing by the Shoals and a bearing that took us over the shallows of Old and New Scantum. As with last year, the weather made this the fourth try, but overall it was worth it, albeit we hit a five hour window in the weather. The journey back was marked by winds peaking at 30 knots, but for the bulk of the trip, the seas were two to three feet, with 15 knot winds out of the southwest. Thanks to Steve Mirick for calling the birds, and for spotting most of the good ones. Black Duck - 1 Common Loon - 1 Northern Fulmar - 23 including 4 dark morph all over Jeffries/scantum Iceland Gull - 2 (1st Year, adult) Glaucous Gull - 1 ad Lesser Black-backed Gull - 1 ad Kittiwake - 35 - surprisingly all adult, mostly well past shoals Black Guillemot - 2 near isles of shoals Razorbill - 23 Dovekie - 6 including group of four seen well on the water over New Scantum Atlantic Puffin - 1 seen well and briefly on the water by a few - New Scantum Common Murre - 1 flyby Alcid sp. - 18 For a map of our route. http://www.flickr.com/photos/20225164@N05/?saved=1 Eric Masterson Executive Director Piscataquog Land Conservancy www.plcnh.org Phone: 487-3331
