Subject: Lesser B-B Gulls & other sightings
From: Bill Purcell <wpurcell(AT)TWCNY.RR.COM>
Date: 5 Jan 2003 7:43pm
There were 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls in Oswego Harbor on Sunday,
Jan. 5. They were in with about 200 Herring and Great Black-backs on
the ice off Wright's Landing, the first one I saw was a second winter
bird with what appeared to be flesh-colored legs, a dark bill with a
pale tip and no white mirrors on the folded black primaries. The
second bird looked to be an adult although it had its bill tucked
whenever I viewed it. both birds had a lot of streaking on the head
and nape. In the back of the group of gulls was a very dark
first-winter Iceland Gull.
Otherwise, the harbor had little in the way of waterfowl - only a few
D-C Cormorants, 1 Am. Coot and a Red-breasted Merg. East of the
harbor were the usual Bufflehead, Com. Goldeneye and Long-tailed
Ducks (the phalaropes are long gone). On the Pond at Fair Haven SP
there were 4 Tundra Swans feeding and 2 more swans sleeping on the
ice. I think they were Tundras as well but they never lifted their
heads.
The Northern Shrike was seen again on Smith Road in Mexico just south
of its usual location on Sherman & South Daysville Roads and there
was one Rough-legged Hawk at Sherman Road and NY Route 3.

At least One Lapland Longspur with a flock of 70
Horned Lark, on Cow Manure spread on a field on the
north east side of Cole street, about half a mile west
of Solsville (North of Madison and Southwest of
Oriskany Falls; top of Gazetteer page 62).
Also one Rough legged Hawk on Swamp Road south of
Peterboro (north of Morrisville).
Please forgive the British-name versions! This may be
my last chance as I go for my naturalization interview
in Buffalo on Monday.

Subject: PEREGRINE FALCON/SNOWY OWL - Southern Highlands
From: David Wheeler <Tigger64(AT)AOL.COM>
Date: 5 Jan 2003 8:08pm
A trip to the Southern Highland area of southern Madison County found an
adult PEREGRINE FALCON and a female/imm. type SNOWY OWL.
adult PEREGRINE FALCON - Perched atop a telephone pole, atop a small hill and
below a brown house, about 1 mile (didn't measure) north of Georgetown on the
east side of Route 80. The house has a Remax for sale sign down by the road.
An hour or so later the bird had departed from this spot, and I'm not sure
there's anything special about the perch to think it would return (other than
a good view of the valley). I got digiscoped pics and digiscoped video of
the bird.
SNOWY OWL - Perched atop telephone poles and the Fenner Church bell tower,
along Nelson Rd. at the intersection of Bingley Rd. (going to the west) and
East Rd. (going to the east). The Town of Fenner offices are at this corner,
as well as the Fenner Church. The bird is speckled below with a black cap on
the head. This is close to where a Snowy was seen two years ago on Peterboro
Rd. between Nelson Rd. and Bellinger Rd. Check these as well as Larkin,
Cody, and Bingley/East Rd. if the bird isn't there. Good looks can be had,
but please folks, let's be careful not to harass it.
There's a farm in Sheds (Madison County) whose trees have been playing host
to a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK (it was there last year as well), and in Oswego Harbor
a PIED-BILLED GREBE. From Conners Rd. in Van Buren, in the valley, a flock
of House Finches (30-50 birds) is present, feeding on a bush with very small
berries. I didn't see any obvious Purple Finch candidates, but this is a
good place to keep checking. Cedar Waxwings and Flickers are also present.
Finally, from a feeder in North Syracuse, two CAROLINA WRENS.

On Thursday I went through those Fair Haven swans and concluded that there
were two Trumpeters and four Tundras, the two Trumpeters frequently
separating from the others (ie., staying together) and approaching quite
close on that day.
I was there Saturday but the birds were much farther out and I didn't go
through them. Also, though I could not find it, a man there reported a white
goose he believed to be of domestic origin in amongst the Canadas.
Saturday night at the Savannah mucklands, neither Snowy Owl nor Short-Eared
Owl could be found. A male NORTHERN HARRIER was present however.

I went to Little Sodus Bay Northern Cayuga County. Only the northern end =
of the bay was free of ice. Hunters were shooting at any ducks that came =
near.=20
On lake Ontario from Fairhaven State Park there was a Glaucous Gull =
(possible juv/1st yr, it was too distant to discern whether the mantle =
was gray?). ~35 White-winged Scoters. Many Common Goldeneye. One Common =
Loon.
The 2 Trumpeter Swans are still present at Fairhaven Pond.=20
There was a Northern Shrike on the northeast side of the intersection of =
Rt.104 and Rt.370 near the town of Red Creek.
On Rt.38, about six miles south of North Victory, there was a flock of =
32 Horned Larks (all appeared to be the practicola subspecies).
Last but not least, the Snowy Owl was back on the south side of Rt.31 at =
the Savannah Mucklands, viewed from the potato building. This appears to =
be the same bird that was last seen around December 29th and the bird =
that was nowhere to be found during the MNWR CBC last Sunday...grrrrrr.
Good Birding and Happy New Year!

Andrew: This year, Purple Finch is a very exciting bird. I would love
to see one. They breed right here in my yard, but I haven't seen any
this winter feeding season. I had a Carolina Wren come in for peanuts
during the Christmas Day snowstorm, then didn't see it again until
Friday's snow storm. By then, I had melted suet and peanut butter
together and it had a feast. I haven't seen it since. I guess we need
another snow storm to bring it in.

one around the Mile Strip Rd. area.
This afternoon went to Oswego Harbor and struck out again on the =

over 50 American Robins, probably near 100. The yard contained a number of

large flock of Starlings present also. Other birds were about 8
White-Throated Sparrows and 4 American Tree Sparrows and Chickadees.

Hello,
I always find it interesting how Rough-leg morph ratios change locally
throughout the season. Anyways, early on there were 3:1 dark to light and
now it seems just the reverse. Along Rt 16 from DeRuyter to my house today
there were 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS(1 light and 1 dark). Yesterday there was a
LIGHT MORPH ROUGHY on Rt 26 just south of Georgetown and 1 LIGHT MORPH
BUZZARD at the intersection of Rt 80 and Pompey Center Rds. On my way to
check for the Snowy Owl in Fenner yesterday I had yet a third Cazenovia
area NORTHERN SHRIKE(if you count Kevin McGann's two) on Rt 20 coming down
the hill into Cazenovia. It dived on a mixed flock of 30 CEDAR WAXWINGS and
EUROPEAN STARLINGS(no success). There were also 3 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS at this
location. I struck out on the Snowy Owl, but the area does look good. The
bell tower is about 3/4 of a mile outside the New Woodstock CBC circle. Th
count circle ends right about where Munger Brook crosses Nelson Rd.

All,
I came across this website, a joint venture between Cornell, Audubon, and
funded by the NSF, therefore, so far it's free ; )
Excerpt from birdingonthe.net:
"The Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and the Audubon Society have
announced eBird, an online checklist project that encourages anyone to
submit observations of any bird, any time, anywhere (in North America) to a
central database. The database can by accessed by each user to view or
summarize his or her own personal checklists or to view all of the sightings
in the database. The database will also be used by research scientists to
look for trends in distribution and abundance of all species across the
continent.
Version 1.0 of eBird can be found at http://www.birdsource.org/ebird . Give
it a try."
I apologize if this is a redundant message.

While a juvenile COOPER's HAWK has been paying regular visits to
the yard (even camped out all morning one day last week) an ADULT seems
to have displaced him. We've seen the adult intermittently for the
past 3 days while we haven't seen the juvy since the adult arrived
(used to be 3-5 times per day). My wife thinks she saw both of them
here at the same time the first day.
Also, observed a NORTHERN FLICKER fly over the yard a couple of
minutes ago.

Subject: Hooded Mergansers
From: Rose Costello <kcostel1(AT)TWCNY.RR.COM>
Date: 8 Jan 2003 1:11pm
Hi Everyone,
Spotted 2 male Hooded Mergansers and a possible female Hooded Merganser
at the marina new Admiral Woolsey's in Oswego this morning. Both males
had their crests up and seemed to be preening and flapping their wings
to be noticed by the female. She had her head tucked in just slightly
(so I can't be absolutely positive) and payed no attention to them.
Also about 100 Oldsquaw in the river near Admiral W. The wind was
blowing just right to see the long tails stand up.
Yesterday, while walking at St.Paul's cemetery (Oswego) during the
snowburst, a huge bird flew towards us and was going to land in a
nearby tree, but spotted us and flew to the top of a pine tree about
40-50 ft. away. I thought it was a big hawk at first, but as we
studied it further we realized it was an immature bald eagle. It
stayed in the top of the tree during the brief snowburst and flew away
when it let up.

Subject: Ross's Goose Fair Haven SP
From: Tim Capone <tcapone(AT)TWCNY.RR.COM>
Date: 8 Jan 2003 7:47pm
If this is a domestic goose as was suggested to Mr. Wheeler with =
his 2nd hand report January 5th, then I have no idea what a Ross's Goose =
is, which could be the case, but I doubt it. This bird has black on =
the outer wings and has a white tail with peach legs and bill. The =
goose is much smaller than a Canada goose. This bird is about the size =
of a herring gull. The goose doesn't have a smile like a snow goose. =
The bill seems smaller proportionately than a snow goose. The bill did =
seem to have a darker triangle on the bill as shown in the NGS Field =
Guide. It was getting dark as I viewed the bird. At times there was =
snow and at times there was rain while sometimes there was no =
precipitation.
I would assume that a domestic goose wouldn't have the black wings. =
The bird I saw was uniformly white except for the wings. The bird was =
white on top of the head. I watched it for 10 minutes before I looked =
at a field guide. I used the Sibley's guide first, then the National =
Geographic Society's guide next.
I first spotted the bird when I arrived at the pond at Fair Haven =
at 4:20 PM and watched it till about 4:50 PM. I watched it through my =
Nikon 20-60X80 scope. The goose was at the south end of the open water =
walking the edge of the ice. As night approached, it walk farther out =
on the ice as did many of the Canada geese. What seemed funny was that =
while it went to roost, it tried to stand next to any Canada goose all =
of which were unwilling to roost next to this bird, so it stood in a =
little pocket by itself surround by other geese. (---hope that wasn't =
too much of a run-on sentence)
The goose seemed rather content, actually seemed rather cute. It =
swam along the edge of the ice and would get out occasionally walking =
between the Canada geese. =20

Subject: Eared Grebe
From: "MattV." <fickity(AT)NETSCAPE.NET>
Date: 8 Jan 2003 8:13pm
Greetings! I spent my lunch break in Aurora at the boat house across
from Wells College overlooking Cayuga Lake. Within minutes, I found the
basic EARED GREBE that was diving and feeding more or less straight out
from the left side of the boat house. Canada Goose numbers were WAY
down today, and this made locating the Grebe much easier. Other
waterfowl present were 6 RING-NECKED DUCKS, ~50 COMMON GOLDENEYE, a
RICHARDSON'S type Canada Goose, and a LEUCISTIC Canada Goose. The
latter was white where it should have been brown. Thus, it had a black
neck with a white mask, and a glowing white body. Very odd!!
Two HORNED GREBES were also present, as were REDHEAD, Mallards and
Black Ducks. A dark-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was at work yesterday
afternoon, and both a male and female HARRIER are seen daily at work in
the fallow field...

Yeah, that's what I thought and should have relied on. The bill seemed
pretty thick to me. I was going by how pale the bird seemed to me and how
speckled the back seemed to me. Plus I thought the face was pretty white
for a common loon, but the bill was definitely thicker which left me
confused. I got an urgent phone call and had to meet someone when I sent
that last post and didn't have time to clarify that ID for myself before I
posted it. Sorry about the mistake. I'm thinking now that it was probably
a common loon as I look at my guides.
Trust me on the Ross's goose, though. I studied that one for a long
time and a just got done perusing the net for photos. I don't know what can
be mistaken for a Ross's goose.

Date: 9 Jan 2003 2:10am
The Montezuma CBC was held on January 1 2003 and 19 observers in 11
parties found a record total of 80 species, eight more than the
previous high established in 1995. Two birds, Merlin and Lesser Black-
backed Gull, were new to the count and new highs were established for
11 other species. The total individuals found was second only to
1995 when some 87,000 Starlings were found in the circle. The chief
factors contributing to the high numbers were the north end of Cayuga
Lake being mostly ice-free and some open water in and around the
Refuge. We also had observers in the right places and there were
still areas where half-hardies could find shelter despite the snow.

I=B9m almost afraid to post the results of the Oneida CBC after seeing
Montezuma=B9s.
The Oneida CBC was held on December 21, 2002. Twelve participants in 7
parties found 48 species and 8,680 individuals. The consensus of the
participants seemed to be that birds were hard to find that day, and that
may be an understatement. Owling was successful except for Barred Owl as
the sky was clear, the moon was shining, and the winds were calm very early
in the morning. The weather began to deteriorate at dawn and got worse as
the day progressed. It clouded up early, started to snow, and was windy.
Counts for most species including the common ones were low, and some
species, such as Sharp-shinned Hawk, Snow Bunting, Horned Lark, and
Red-breasted Nuthatch, were not found at all. The lack of northern finches
was evident.

Subject: Probable Long-eared Owl
From: Judy Wright <wryton(AT)EARTHLINK.NET>
Date: 9 Jan 2003 6:45pm
This evening, at about 4:45, I was headed into the house and thought I
heard a dog barking in the pines next to the house. I stopped to
listen and realized that the "wuff wuff" paused and repeated, was not
from the ground but up in the pines and very consistent in sound. The
only change was an occasional extra, shorter "wuf" at the end of the
two wuffs. My first thought was " Are long-eared owls the ones that
bark?" I could not see the owl. A friend stepped out the door out and
also heard the barking and as the door closed we saw one, quick glimpse
of a wing as the owl flew deeper into the woods and wuffed a few more
times. My impression was an owl that was of decent size, but not
anywhere near as large as a G.H. Also, the call was definitely not
Short-eared. I did come into the house then and listen to tapes and I'm
sure, from the call, that this is a Long-eared Owl. I'd love a better
look to confirm this bird. A lifer for me.
We are located in Baldwinsville. If anyone wants to try listening the
woods can be reached from the Van Buren Rd. exit on 690 N. Turn right
onto VanBuren Rd. and take the first left, Ellsworth Rd. (Town Hall on
the corner) the woods are on the left, at the bottom of a small hill,
and are just before a small bridge. If you go too far you'll come to
Canton St. Turn around and come back. A warning: The road is narrow,
and often icey near the pines. Speeders are a problem. The shoulder
near the pines is nonexistent (a ditch!). the other side can be a mud
pit so please be very careful. You will probably be treated to the
local G.H. Owl calling. We hear one or two calling every day from
deeper in the same woodlot.

Joe Brin & Kevin McGann searched for the owl for a couple of hrs.
Thurs. evening to no avail. I listened this morning and haven't heard
it again. Kevin suggested the local G.H. Owl may have driven it off

I had a Sharp-Shinned hawk setting on a bluebird house near my carport where
I have several feeders and suet containers. There were no birds naturally
but the hawk flew down to the ground near my car and I wondered if they eat
seed of any kind? The books only list small birds as there choice for food.

Date: 10 Jan 2003 3:31pm
Greetings! The 1st year ROSS' GULL was still present in Irondequoit
Bay (Rochester) as of 12:30pm. The Bird was observed in flight,
feeding, preening, and walking atop the ice. I got some digiscoped
photos, and will post them to my webpage by late tonight.
I would like to publicly thank BOB SPAHN for putting us all onto the
ROSS' GULL!!!!! Bob was kind enough to show many visiting Birders
where the Bird was today on several occasions. He also phoned in 2
reports to the CNY BirdBox. This kind behavior should be emanated by
all of us...

Kevin Mc Gann and I saw the out-of -region ROSS'S GULL 8:30 am this =
morning at Irondequoit Bay, Rochester . The Ross's was first identified =
by Bob Spahn.
Directions from the thruway:
Take I-590 north to Empire Blvd. Go east on Empire. Very shortly there =
is
a traffic signal at Winton St. Go through Winton but very quickly, turn
left onto Orchard Park Blvd. Stay on Orch Park as it turns right and =
heads
down toward the bay. At the bottom, go straight ahead into the =
fisherman's
parking lot. The bird was seen a little to the right of here.
We then headed to Fairhaven S.P. Cayuga County to make a 'Ross's sweep' =
for the Ross's Goose that was seen yesterday (01/09/03). We arrived late =
morning but the Ross's Goose was not there, nor were most of the Canada =
Geese that are usually present. The geese probably dispersed to feed in =
surrounding fields/areas.=20
While driving out of Fairhaven S.P. we came across a HERMIT THRUSH that =
flew from the roadside into nearby shrubs and had excellent views as it =
fed on berries.=20
Good Birding,

Subject: Gyrfalcon at Farley's Point
From: Steve Kelling <stk2(AT)cornell.edu>

Hello,
This morning Wes Hochachka, Ann Redelfs, and I observed a immature grey
GYRFALCON along the beach at Farley's Pt. We first noticed the bird flying
north along the Cayuga Lake shoreline. What struck us was that it was
noticeably dark and long tailed and its flight, even against the wind, was
powerful. We refound the bird perched on a limb, and being mobbed by
Herring Gulls. We did not get a chance to view the bird perched, but as it
flew off we were impressed by the size of the bird. My overall impression
was that the wingspan approached that of the mobbing Herring Gulls, but its
body seemed much more massive and its tail much longer. I could see the
streaky dusky-white cheeks and very pale moustache. From above I could see
dusky barring on its mantle and wings. In what seemed like 2 or 3 wingbeats
the bird disappeared around the point heading North toward Union Springs.
We could not refind the bird.
We also saw several American Widgeon, Gadwall, a lone Canvasback, Tundra
Swan, and many Common Goldeneye around Farley's Point.
Farley's Point Rd is @1/2 mile South of Union Springs. But I suspect that
if the bird sticks around it could be anywhere on Cayuga Lake where there
are concentrations of waterfowl.

I posted the following to the Geneseebirds list earlier today. No
further reports have been posted since then.
Apparently the Ross' Gull was seen at the south end of
Irondequoit Bay early this morning, but it flew off and hasn't
been relocated. The open water that it was feeding in yesterday
morning has frozen. There were no gulls at all at the south end
of the bay when I was there between 10:15 and 11:30. There's
an area of open water about a half mile north of the south end of
the bay. It was accessible from some undeveloped parkland
along Orchard Park Blvd north of the rod and gun club (keep
going past the fisherman's parking lot where the gull was seen
yesterday). There were about 20 Bonaparte's Gulls there, and quite
a few ducks, but the Ross' Gull wasn't found. A couple of birders told
me that they had been to the north end of the bay and hadn't found it
there either. When I was at LaSalle's landing park at the south end
of the bay, Steve Daniel located a first-winter Peregrine sitting on a
post in the bay. We had great looks at it, then it flew and chased a
pigeon at high speed. That might be why there weren't any gulls in
the area.

That's GOOSE not gull.
The Ross's Goose seen earlier this week at Fair Haven S.P. was seen
again on Saturday afternoon. After digging out from 16" of snow in
the morning I went to Fair Haven thinking that the goose should
return to the Pond in the evening. It wasn't there at 3 PM nor was it
on Little Sodus Bay and I returned to the State Park a little after
4:00. At 4:27 the Ross's Goose came in with a flock of Canada's and
within minutes it climbed on an ice flow. The best views I've ever
had of a Ross's at about 60 yards thru 40X.
Other waterfowl present included 1 Mute Swan and what looked to be 7
Tundra Swans on the bay (no Trumpeters), both Scaup, 100's of C.
Goldeneye - no Barrow's after three passes - Redhead and all 3 Mergs.

Late in the day must be the clue for this bird. I was at Fair Haven until 4
p.m. on Friday. Though there were many Canadas, no Ross's.
One can only dream that we could get both the goose and the gull (and mob, of
course) there!
