Subject: Big Migration Day
From: Matthew Young <grosbeak(AT)CLARITYCONNECT.COM>
Date: 16 Mar 2003 6:53pm
Hello all,
Basically I drove the Southern Highlands or counted from the deck today
even though I'm about 2 weeks from defending my thesis. There was a
constant stream of geese all day long. Well over 20 flocks of geese moved
through with more than 1200+ CANADA GEESE and 200+ SNOW GEESE. There were
at least 2 pure SNOW GEESE FLOCKS(some blues included). Also, mixed
BLACKBIRD flocks moved through all day--Mostly MALE RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS.
From the deck in 90 minutes I had 2 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 11 RED-TAILED
HAWKS, 1 GOLDEN EAGLE, 1 NORTHERN GOSHAWK and 1 TURKEY VULTURE. 1 LIGHT
MORPH ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK continues along Middle Lake Rd. There were singing
HORNED LARKS AND KILLDEERS in many of the manured fields in the area.
Additionally, 2 TURKEY VULTURES were in Manlius. Lastly, 5 PURPLE FINCHES
were at the feeders on and off all day long--3 males and 2 imm/females. A
EUROPEAN STARLING was doing a Blue-headed Vireo imitation--a first for me.

From: Ginny Alfano <jgalfano(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 16 Mar 2003 8:44pm
What a perfect weekend! We rode our ATV 75 miles today from our land in
Constableville, NY. Up in Highmarket, on Michigan Mills Rd., my husband spotted
a spectacular adult Bald Eagle flying fairly low across the open field to our
right. He flew directly over us with only the cloudless brilliant blue sky as
the background. It was one of those special moments that makes me so glad that
I'm a birder.
Yesterday, we snowshoed our property and saw the following birds:
Pileated Woodpecker
Ravens (flew right over my head - I could hear the wingbeats)
Blue Jays
Red-breasted Nuthatches
White-breasted Nuthatches
Black-capped Chickadees
Purple Finches (singing constantly in the tree tops)
A weekend like this really gives us hope that spring is on the way!

Subject: What a day!
From: Dana Rohleder <dcrohleder(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 16 Mar 2003 9:13pm
3/16/03
This afternoon I decided to head to Bulwagga Bay near Port Henry to check
out the waterfowl I saw a few days earlier. I was disappointed with the view
because of an excessive amount of shimmer through my scope. I saw a pretty
evenly mixed group of Blacks, Mallards, C. Mergs, Bufflehead, Ringnecks,
Scaup, & Goldeneyes, but no real detail was visible at that distance. I
should have just driven over to them on the ice like everyone else was
doing, but I didn't see any 2WD vehicles out there.
I decided to head back north, and in Essex I did a double-take and found
about 1/2 acre of open water at the ferry dock. I spent about an hour
playing with my new digiscoping rig, taking pix of roughly the same mix of
birds as noted above. As it got closer to sunset, more and more birds
started dropping in. Suddenly I noticed I was staring down a drake Barrow's
Goldeneye. After a few minutes of snapping pix of him, I realized a female
Barrow's had joined him!! Not only was I lucky enough to photograph the
drake, I was able to photograph the pair for several minutes until my
battery crapped out. After a quick battery change, I was able to snap a
couple more before they took off toward the south. What dumb luck!!
A little later I was treated to the opportunity to photograph the full moon
rising over VT through my rig. After that, a beautiful sun setting behind
the High Peaks. The highlight of the day was on the way home - a big bug
splat on my windshield - a personal early record for Essex Co.!!
If you didn't get the photo attachment, I will be uploading some images to
my section of the Photos area on the NNYBirds website.

I know it's time for their return, but the 300+ Snow Geese that flew over
Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (Seneca Falls) yesterday (Sat. 3/15) had
to keep going (north), since the main pool was still frozen. They are the
first I've seen this year.
The NWR centennial celebration there was superb, including an interesting
talk by Michael Allen about the Bald Eagle's return to NYS following many
years of hard work since the hacking program in the 70s. The center has a
large screen monitor of an eagle nest now installed in the building.

The N. Hawk Owl in Root, Montgomery County was seen yet again today, =
March 16th and reported to HMBC's Birdline by several observers. One =
observer watched it plunge dive into snow, only to come up empty - =
(taloned?).
Each day the bird stays around is a bonus. One would have thought it =
would have moved on by now. Anyway, it is certainly much better weather =
for watching Hawk Owls than back in January.
Directions:
NYS Rt. 20 west of Albany to Schoharie County Rt 7A (Corbin Hill Road); =
NORTH 1.6 miles. Look for the owl ontop maple trees in front of the =
farmhouse 3/10's mile into Montgomery County. If not there, continue =
another 1/4 to 1/2 mile and search treetops on both sides of Corbin Hill =
Road.=20
Please report results (pos. or neg.) to HMBC's Birdline 518-439-8080; =
leave a message in any box by pressing the "star" button any time or =
wait for the box message to finish. Box 1 has general intro info; Box 2 =

I led a Rochester Birding Assn./Genesee Ornithological Soc. field trip to
the MNWR area today. The pools at the refuge are all frozen, but there
is some open water at the north end of Cayuga Lake, along the east
side of the lake. We went to Mud Lock, to a spot at the village offices
in the village of Cayuga, and to a park in Union Springs. In Union Springs,
at the edge of the ice, there were perhaps 1000 Snow Geese, including
some blue phase. A Killdeer flew over. The Screech Owl in the Wood Duck
box in the pond on Route 90 in Union Springs was sleeping in the hole in the
box, and everyone got a good look at him. In the village of Cayuga, we studied
a big raft with Redheads, Canvasbacks, Ring-necked Ducks, both scaup, a
single Horned Grebe, a pair of American Wigeon, and all 3 mergansers. A
small flock of Tundra Swans flew past. At Mud Lock we had more of the same,
plus a pair of Blue-winged Teal. The Ospreys don't seem to have arrived yet.
On a scouting trip on Saturday we also had Northern Pintails and Gadwall
at Mud Lock, plus a heard-only Carolina Wren. Red-winged Blackbirds
were notably absent on Saturday, but present and vocal on Sunday
at several locations, including the refuge headquarters. One trip participant
reported 3 Tree Swallows at the HQ, but I didn't see them. We had a
Bald Eagle at the nest on Armitage Road, and singing Horned Larks
across the road.

Your story reminds me of a visit I made to the local DEC office a number of
years ago. On the wall of the wildlife biologists' office was a DEC-issued
poster with the caption "If you care, you'll leave them there", part of a
campaign to educate the public to not interfere with deer fawns, fledgling
birds, etc., since the adults were likely nearby. However, the poster had
been altered to read "If you care, you'll kill your share"!

Hello again,
The N. HAWK OWL was seen at the intersection of Hardwood Island and
Indian Opening roads just north of the thruway. Also, I forgot to metion
in yesterday's post that many AMERICAN KESTREL have returned and are on
territory on Crumb Hill Rd., Rt80/13 between New Woodstock and Sheds, Rt
80 between Sheds and Georgetown, and Rt 80 near Apulia. The PURPLE
FINCHES continue at the house.

Spent 1-2:00 pm looking in the vicinity previously mentioned with no
luck. Lots of Kestrels in the area though.
Green Lakes State Park - visually observed one GREAT HORNED OWL being
mobbed by quite a few crows at 12:30. Also observed 2 RED-TAILED HAWKS
circling overhead abd just prior to them two COOPER'S HAWK overheard.
Finally, observed what I believed to have been a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK
just outside the park on Shady Lane. Only saw it briefly though, so I
can't confirm that.

Brenda Best, Natalia Garcia and I spent quite some time today looking
for the Madison County Hawk Owl. We started up the original route on
Harsh Road just east of Chittenango, went to Gee Road, crossed the
Thruway and took Tag Road east to Indian Opening Road. When we came
to Hardwood Island Road, there was no road, street sign or anything,
just a muddy lane going north. But it was a fun day Many Killdeer,
grackles, Red-winged Blackbirds. Brenda spotted a Red-tailed Hawk on
a nest and we found 3 used oriole nests. Good Atlas material.

I drove to Indian Opening Rd. at 3:00pm today, but had no luck finding the Hawk
Owl. Did see a Northern Shrike sitting in a tree on the edge of Hardwood Island
Rd just before the little bridge to the dirt road. Lots of Red-winged
Blackbirds, Grackles, etc. Sure sounds like Spring!

From: Barbara Herrgesell <HerPartB(AT)AOL.COM>
Date: 18 Mar 2003 11:57pm
The river has opened up, thus the concentration of ducks, gulls and eagles in
Phoenix and Fulton seems to have diminished. There were about 4 for sure
Red-necked Grebes at Phoenix, but bad lighting may have made others
unidentifiable. A few Common Mergansers, but no eagles were found at Boat
Launch Stop 28 in Fulton where the river is all open.
In Lysander we found 2 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS apparently back on territory on
Fenner Rd., 2 HORNED LARKS on Wheaton Rd. and a flock of RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRDS with one RUSTY BLACKBIRD (yellow eye, all black, short tail) in it
on Wheaton Rd. in trees near a field with less snow on it than most. Robins
were numerous. Also on Wheaton a TURKEY VULTURE flew over. Two AMERICAN TREE
SPARROWS were along Potter Rd. in Three Rivers WMA.

Subject: Hawk-owls: Canastota - NO, Root - YES
From: Tom Lathrop <tlathro1(AT)ROCHESTER.RR.COM>
Date: 19 Mar 2003 11:27pm
I took the day off from work today (Wed. March 19) to try to
see my life Hawk-owl. I first tried to find the one that had been
reported in Canastota. I tried both the Indian Opening Road
location and the original location, on Route 5 opposite the
Del Mar motel, but didn't find the bird. I did not try the site
near the Chittenango Rod and Gun Club. In the old Erie Canal
(at Harsh Road, I think) there were several Hooded Mergansers
and a pair of American Wigeon. Near the corner of Route 5 and
Harsh Road was a pair of American Kestrels. I saw one fly into
an opening near the roofline of a flat-roofed house. Perhaps they
are trying to nest in there.
I then drove to Corbin Hill Road, in the town of Root, Montgomery
County. I got there about 1:30, and found the Hawk-owl at the top
of a large tree in the front yard of the farmhouse, where it has been
seen for over 2 months. It soon dropped down to a lower spot, where
it was harder to see. After a while it flew up to the top of a telephone
pole, where I was able to get stunning views of it in my scope. There
wasn't much wind, and the bird was in wonderful light. It was a very
satisfying way to see a lifer, well worth the trip.
On the way home I was driving into the setting sun, with some high
cirrus clouds. A sun dog was visible, first on the left of the sun, then
on both sides. It looked like two partial rainbows on each side of the
sun rather than 3 suns. I think that it continued for 15 or 20 minutes.

I tried for the reported N. Hawk Owl in Canastota on Weds. morning
and could not find it. Since driving thru the mud didn't appear to be
a good idea, I walked the southern half of Hardwood Island Road up to
the abandoned bridge two different times. No owl and even though
there is much open habitat, the fields are cultivated muckland and my
understanding is that there is usually a much lower rodent population
in tilled fields than in fallow fields. Other roads in the area I
checked included Indian Opening, Tackabury, Tag, Gee, New Boston,
Pine Ridge and N. Main St. (CR 5). I would appreciate hearing from
anyone who may have photographed this owl.

Subject: Woodcock and Waterfowl
From: Brenda Best <jabbest(AT)AMERICU.NET>
Date: 20 Mar 2003 1:06pm
I heard my first Woodcock of the year this morning in the Town of Lee,
northeast of Lake Delta.
On my way home, I checked the waterfowl at Verona Marsh, which is just
opening up.
Snow Goose (1 white; 1 blue)
Canada Goose
Black Duck
Mallard
Northern Pintail
Green-winged Teal
Ring-necked Duck
Hooded Merganser
I then checked southern/eastern Oneida Lake where creeks flow into it, which
are the only places at this end that are open. In Verona Beach at Oneida
Creek, and in Lakeport at Canaseraga Creek:
Black Duck
Mallard
Ring-necked Duck
Bufflehead
Common Goldeneye
Common Merganser
The most variety and largest quantities were found in Bridgeport at
Chittenango Creek:
RED-NECKED GREBE - 1
Canada Goose
Mute Swan
Gadwall
American Wigeon
Black Duck
Mallard
Northern Pintail
Ring-necked Duck
Greater Scaup
Bufflehead
Common Goldeneye (about 500)
Hooded Merganser
Common Merg
Red-breasted Merg (just one)
I came back through on Tag and Indian Opening Roads in Canastota. No hawk
owl. There was a mixed flock of Red-wing Blackbirds and Starlings that
included 25 Rusty Blackbirds.
And finally, at the overlook at Great Swamp Conservancy where the water is
not open yet, there were 3 miserable-looking Great Blue Herons standing on
nests in the rookery (2 of them on one nest).

Subject: Nations Road Short-eared Owls
From: "MattV." <fickity(AT)NETSCAPE.NET>
Date: 20 Mar 2003 2:49pm
Greetings! Last Thursday, March 13th, I traveled to the Nations Road
IBA near Geneseo (south of Rochester). I hoped that maybe I might luck
into a lingering Short-eared Owl. I didn't see one, but I did find 17
SHORT-EARED OWLS that were active in the daytime at the Tadmore Farm. I
belive a low-flying helicopter was the reason the Owls were aloft in the
day. When I arrived, the Birds were just getting up as the helicopter
was approaching. Once it passed, The Birds went back to roost. Perfect
timing for me!!
I got some nice digiscoped pics of the Tadmore Farms SHORT-EARED OWLS.
I uploaded them to my website (finally) today. I also added a few
pics of RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS from Nations Road. Since I was digging
through old stuff, I put up shots of the 1st winter ICELAND GULL and 2nd
winter GLAUCOUS GULL that were along the Oswego River in Baldwinsville,
NY near Syracuse this winter. I hope everyone wont mind looking at
winter Birds on a dull rainy day!
To get to my page, follow the link below my name. Click on BIRD
PHOTOS, and look for the NEW! icon. There are 7 of them to find...ENJOY!!

Hello all,
Over the past few days GEESE have been moving through in a steady stream,
ROBINS are hanging around the house, RW BLACKBIRDS are on territory,
KILLDEERS are flying around manured field, PURPLE FINCHES are singing and
doing their spring mimicry, HORNED LARKS are counter-singing, RAVENS and
RED-TAILS are checking out there old nesting haunts, GOSHAWKS are doing
there slow courtship flight, GREAT-HORNED OWLS are hooting just downslope,
and COYOTES are yipping and howling quite close to the house. No Woodcocks
yet, but there was a NORTHERN HARRIER on Penoyer Rd. yesterday and a light
colored MERLIN on Rt 26 south of Georgetown today.

From: joe brin <jnnbrin(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 22 Mar 2003 2:18pm
While eyeing Canada Geese in Dead Creek this morning I
happened upon a smaller, more compact bird. As the
bird was walking on ice I could see the true size.
Also, a Wigeon was in close proximity to the
Richardson's and other Canadas so I got a good size
comparison. The bird appeared about half the size of a
Canada but not twice the size of the Wigeon. It had
the shorter bill of the smaller Goose but not the real
dark breast of a Cackling which I have seen in this
location. Dead Creek is located in the Town of Van
Buren in Onondaga County. This particular location is
off of Rt.31 an the town highway department.

The Root hawk owl is still there. Was across the road and down a ways in
the top of another tree. There was a couple from Boston there and he spied
an Bald eagle flying behind the house where the owl ususally sits. I found
it in a tree back toward rt. 20 on a side road sitting in a tree with crows
all around. It was an adult. Also seen within a 1/4 mile of the owl were a
rough-legged hawk, and a northern harrier. A red tailed hawk was also seen
in same area.

# 12 - Friday, March 21, 2003
Last weekend's southerly winds and warm weather brought forth a large =
push of migrants into Central NY. By Sunday evening, KILLDEER, AMERICAN =
ROBINS, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, COMMON GRACKLES and BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS =
were practically everywhere, with a few reports of SONG SPARROWS, =
EASTERN MEADOWLARKS, and EASTERN BLUEBIRDS mixed in. On Tuesday, 1 =
RUSTY BLACKBIRD was in a flock of RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS in Lysander, =
while throughout the week, flocks of SNOW GEESE were seen making their =
way north amid the numerous skeins of CANADA GEESE. There has been only =
one report of a FOX SPARROW so far, that of a bird in a yard near Utica =
on Monday, but PURPLE FINCHES are being reported from several feeding =
stations.
Over 100 birders enjoyed the hawk flight at Derby Hill on Sunday. More =
than 500 raptors took advantage of the mild weather, including 7 GOLDEN =
EAGLES and 4 BALD EAGLES. The non-raptor migration was highlighted by =
the season's first 4 TREE SWALLOWS, a steady flow of almost 7000 =
AMERICAN CROWS, around 200 ROBINS, and over 7000 blackbirds. Saturday's =
migrants included 4 AMERICAN PIPITS, 85 SNOW BUNTINGS, many HORNED =
LARKS, and a NORTHERN SHRIKE. Today (Friday) the season's first migrant =
EASTERN PHOEBE showed up, and the blackbird count was near 25,000. With =
Sage Creek Marsh still frozen, many waterfowl have taken up residence =
off the bluff on Lake Ontario near the edge of the ice ledge, including =
up to a dozen WOOD DUCKS, several NORTHERN PINTAIL, a few GADWALL and =
WIGEON, and a PIED-BILLED GREBE, plus the usual winter species.
The male TUFTED DUCK was still near the mouth of the Oswego River over =
the weekend. As many as 500 LONG-TAILED DUCKS and 23 WHITE-WINGED =
SCOTERS were also present. In Phoenix, at least 21 RED-NECKED GREBES =
were still present on the river Tuesday, where 4-6 BALD EAGLES have been =
spotted at various times. On Monday, 4 TUNDRA SWANS, 3 AMERICAN WIGEON, =
2 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and a few CANVASBACK were among the dozen species =
of waterfowl located along the west shore of Onondaga Lake, between =
Pleasant Beach and the mouth of Nine Mile Creek.
The SNOWY OWL in Sauquoit was seen on Saturday and Sunday, but there =
have been no reports of anyone trying for it since.
Two AMERICAN WOODCOCKS were seen and heard along Fisher Rd near the =
DeWitt Marsh on Monday evening, and another was heard along Kellogg Rd =
near Smokey Hollow Rd in Three Rivers WMA on Wednesday.
Two LAPLAND LONGSPURS were with a flock of HORNED LARKS on Hoag Rd in =
Van Buren on Saturday. Two GREAT HORNED OWLS were heard calling in =
Green Lakes State Park on Saturday, and one was seen being mobbed by =
crows on Monday. Two FISH CROWS in the Shop City plaza in Syracuse were =
heard calling from the light tower across from the Blockbuster Video =
store. Shop City is located at the intersection of Grant Blvd and Teall =
Ave on the east side of the city.
From the north country comes a report of 2 GRAY PARTRIDGES in Cape =
Vincent on Friday afternoon, March 14. They were seen in the front yard =
of a house along CR 57, about 1.2 miles south of Rt 6. The house should =
be easy to find, as it is the only one in the area where the front porch =
is under renovation.
Finally, there comes an as yet unverified sighting of the/a NORTHERN =
HAWK OWL in the Canastota area. The bird was reported to be seen along =
Indian Opening Rd near the intersection of Hardwood Island Rd on an =
unspecified date sometime early last week (Mar 9-11?). Hardwood Island =
Rd is an unposted, dirt rd that runs north of Indian Opening Rd on the =
north side of the Thruway. Many birders on several occasions this week =
spent time in this area without re-spotting the Owl, but one birder did =
come away with a NORTHERN SHRIKE sighting as a consolation on Tuesday, =
while another had 25 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS on Thursday. If anyone does =
relocate this Hawk Owl, they are urged to call the Birdbox as soon as =
possible with details of the sighting.
On Saturday, March 29, David Wheeler will lead a field trip to Onondaga =
Lake to search for spring migrants. Contact Dave at 622-9891 or =
tigger64(AT)aol.com for more information.
