Greetings! This EC Dove originally showed up last June with a WW
Dove. Very suspicious... I don't think there's any way this EC Dove is
a "good" Bird, especially since it hung around all winter. Likely,
someone's pet has flown away! Anyway, if you do want to try for this
guy, here are last year's directions:
Here are Brett's directions:
This evening (Saturday), both a White-winged Dove and a Eurasion Collared
Dove were discovered in the same area along Walker Lake Ontario Rd. in the
Town of Hamlin, Monroe County. They are frequenting a farm just north of
Church Rd. on the east side of the road (just north of the old schoolhouse
on the corner of Church Rd). Both sang repeatedly and moved around a small
area right near the road, often landing in the evergreens and deciduous
trees right along the road, as well as the power lines attached to a pole
set back away from the road by the driveway. (There is a wagon with a
Firewood for Sale sign on the roadside that is directly below the evergreen
trees that the Eurasion Collared Dove often flew into).

Lots of ducks on Oneida Lake at Brewerton where there is only a
little open water (everything could be 'scoped from the fishing
access on the south side along Route 81). Highlights were 195 Ring-
necked Ducks and 300 C. Goldeneye along with small numbers of both
Scaup, the 3 Mergansers, Bufflehead, Wigeon and Gadwall plus 130 Snow
Geese flying over
Along C.R. 54 south of Pennellville over 1000 Snow Geese in the
fields and 130 N. Pintail in a seasonal pond along with Canada Geese
and Mallards. Several Meadowlarks in the area as well.
I didn't think it would be a very good day at Derby Hill but the low
clouds opened a few times and there was a steady flight on west winds
in the afternoon. Approx numbers:
Snow Goose 4100
Turkey Vulture 25
N. Harrier 1
Bald Eagle 1
Sharp-shinned Hawk 5
Cooper's Hawk 12
N. Goshawk 1
Red-shouldered Hawk 45
Red-tailed Hawk 220
Rough-legged Hawk 3

The Snowy owl was there today about 5:15. He was on Bray Rd. about half way
down between Timian and Doolittle Rds. He was sitting in a patch of snow.
There was a lot of bare ground around him. He was about 150 ft. from the
road. Best look I've had.

At one point while watching the owl and 18 wheeler drove by and the owl

I spent a pleasant afternoon watching the Great Blue Herons establish their
nests at the rookery visible from the overlook at the Great Swamp
Conservancy. Just about every nest has been claimed.
The Bluebirds are checking out boxes at the overlook and near the trails. I
also heard a Red-Breasted Woodpecker at the overlook.
There were a large number of both Canada Geese and Snow Geese on the edge of
the ice on Oneida Lake where Oneida Creek enters the lake. Many Common
Mergansers were in among the geese. There were also the same mix of geese at
the edge of the ice at Sylvan Beach.

I saw this same phenomenon...same place (Rte. 31 near the Seneca River), same
time...very spectacular (though I did not see the Ross's). At least 5000 Snow
Geese like a white wave, swirling to the ground, some on each side of the
road.
Two gentlemen with a scope also showed me a group of Pectoral Sandpipers in
the field nearby. Somewhat east, near the bridge were about 1000 Pintails.

OSPREY on nest-Fenner Rd. -Lysander (Onondaga Cty.) Earlier than usual for me.
While scouting out possible nesting Horned Larks in 3 of my blocks this
morning, I had SNOW GEESE in three places in Lysander, Ira (Cayuga Cty.) and
Granby (Oswego Cty.). (No Horned Larks; have pairs in 2 other blocks, in
Lysander). Also had tree sparrows, flickers, Killdeer, Ring-necked Ducks,
bluebirds, Turkey Vultures and Song Sparrows.
This evening Mary Hartigan and I went to listen for woodcock and owls. No
luck with owls, but Mary heard 3 AMERICAN WOODCOCK in 2 places in Lysander
near Lamson Rd. (The neighbors were upset about a car stopped by a field on
this remote country road, but were OK when we explained.)

Could you forward this on to the appropriate lists. Thanks.
Just to let people know the N. Hawk Owl in Root, Mongomery County, was
present this past Saturday AM from around 8 AM until at least 8:45. I first
found it in the trees on the east side of the road just over the rise from
the farnhouse. It then flew further down hill to a telephone pole and used
that for a hunting perch. On the third or fourth dive into the snow-covered
field, it came up with a mouse (or some sort of rodent). It carried it back
to the pole and started tearing at it. It stood on one leg, held the mouse
in the other, and ripped it with its beak. After a few bites, it flew back
uphill to a nearby tree, stashed the remains of the mouse in the end of a
broken off branch, and flew back toward the farmhouse.
Beautiful bird. Better looks than I had in Alaska, and my second Hawk Owl
in New York State. Go figure.

Hello All,
I searched quickly for the Sauquoit Snowy Owl this morning but could not =
find him. I have been without my digital camera for 4 weeks now - and =
it is supposed to be delivered from the repair shop any day now. I =
figure the owl will leave the day I get my camera back!
On the Sulphur Springs Rd. pond there was a little action. This pond is =
above the golf course - between the golf course and where the owl was =
originally seen. Here is what was there this morning:
100+ Canada Geese
2 Hooded Mergansers (one male showing his crest)
1 Bufflehead
1 Ring-neck Duck
2 Black Ducks
2 Mallards
A nice assortment. The pond is huge with all of the melting ice, but =
the ducks were in fairly close - the geese were far back.

Hello All,
I saw the Snowy Owl this afternoon (Tuesday) at 3:30. It was seen on Bray
Rd. in the area described before but on the other side of the road. I was
searching the other side of the road where I saw it yesterday and couldn't
find it. I though it would be concealed in a fading patch of snow. I gave
up the search and glanced on the other side of the road and there he was -
standing in a patch of rich dark dirt. He really stuck out!
In the afternoon I could not find any ducks on the Sulphur Springs Road
pond, but there were many more Canada Geese.

Hello All,
This morning I had a pair of Fox Sparrows at my feeders in the village of
Waterville. They were joined by a Song Sparrow, Several American Robins,
and American Goldfinches.
Also, the Snowy Owl was sitting in the field on Bray Road. There was a
curious American Crow walking around him at a safe distance. I couldn't see
if the owl had caught something, but it seemed as though the crow was
waiting to feed on some leftovers.
On the Sulphur Springs Road pond there was one Gadwall.

Good numbers (way more than 100 in bino sweep) of Ring-neck ducks, c. mergs
(very numerous), golden-eye, and more near the parking lot next to the waste
beds at Onondaga Lake. This is a great time to see courting behavior, especially
among the Golden-eyes.
Access to the parking lot (near the pumping station) is from I-690 N, Solvay
exit, near the Fair Grounds. No access from I-690 S without going to Hiawatha
and then turning around. A 20x scope would be useful.

I saw the snow owl this afternoon at 2:00. He was sitting where Jody said
he saw him. He was in a furrow so not as much of him stuck out. He was
shaking himself like he was trying to get rid of some of the water on his
feathers.
Saw a flock of 40+ turkeys further on Doolittle rd.

At 12:30 today I drove through Three Rivers Game
Management Area and located four Fox Sparrows. They
were in a bushy area with Cottonwoods on Potter Rd.
just east of 60 Rd. Also they were all singing
vociferously which was how I found them in the first
place. Three Rivers is in the town of Lysander in
north west Onondaga County.

Greetings,
Yesterday I was out helping Matt Kamenski at the Great Swamp
Conservancy/Cowaselon Creek Watershed Area. He's doing a Mallard nest
success study as follow-up to my study. Anyway, we had a very early pair of
BLUE-WINGED TEALS; a pair of GREEN-WINGED TEAL; 50+ NORTHERN PINTAILS;
HOODED MERGANSERS; MALLARDS; BLACK DUCKS; 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS; 1 ADULT
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK; TURKEY VULTURES; AMERICAN KESTRELS; singing BLUEBIRDS;
and 2 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS.
At the east end of Oneida Lake were 3000+ SNOW GEESE; 1000's of CANADA
GEESE; SCAUPS; COMMON GOLDENEYE; BUFFLEHEADS; and GULLS.

Matt,
What time were you at the east end of Oneida Lake? When I was there at
10:30 this morning, there were two fishermen in a small boat at the mouth of
Oneida Creek that were keeping all the waterfowl out at the ice edge and IN
THE FOG! Although I didn't see any geese, I could see Common Mergansers and
Bufflehead, but it was really hard to see everything, much less ID them all.
There was, however, one Horned Grebe close in. I had a great look at the
red eye and the red stripe between the eye and the bill.

Heard snipe at dusk in the Three Rivers WMA pulloff on Kellogg Rd.
Also saw a woodcock fly in there...just light enough. He came from the woods

hear the wing "whistling".

That huge fall out of mergansers, redheads, ring-necked ducks, goldeneye and
bufflehead I reported yesterday at 10 am on Onondaga Lake were absolutely and
completely gone when I drove by at 4 pm. Amazing.
At 4 pm I went to Potter road in Three Rivers Wildlife Management Area north of
Baldwinsville and the Fox Sparrows reported by Joe were still there. I counted
eight. On the first pond south of Potter road were 30 Ring-necked Ducks. I
really didn't expect that.
At 7:30 pm (after dark) again on Potter road I heard the call of a Pintail.
Could that be possible? Or is there something that gives a similar call?

# 13 - Friday, March 28, 2003
=20
The hawk flight at Derby Hill today (Friday) was nothing short of =
spectacular. The 15-20 mph south-southeast winds kept pushing birds =
through all day long. At the end of the day, the total raptor count was =
2,140 birds, with daily season highs set for TURKEY VULTURE (1128), =
NORTHERN HARRIER (59), SHARP-SHINNED HAWK (442), COOPER'S HAWK (60), =
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK (39), AMERICAN KESTREL (37), and MERLIN (2). In =
addition, 4 SANDHILL CRANES passed together during the middle of the =
afternoon. =20
The flight on Friday easily surpassed the previous best day's flight, =
which had occurred on Tuesday, when 1687 raptors were counted at the =
hawkwatch. The highlight of Tuesday's flight was undoubtedly the new =
daily record set for BLACK VULTURES, when 3 of these birds passed in a =
boil that was just ahead of the cold front that came through in the =
early afternoon. Tuesday's count also included season highs for =
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK (149), and RED-TAILED HAWK (547), plus 690 TURKEY =
VULTURES, 155 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 58 COOPER'S HAWKS, 5 GOLDEN EAGLES =
and 5 BALD EAGLES. There was also an astounding count of 160,000 =
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, GRACKLES and COWBIRDS that occurred within a =
2-hour span. Some other migrants noted Tuesday include about 1000 =
ROBINS, 6 AMERICAN PIPITS, 6 EASTERN PHOEBES, and the first migrant =
FLICKER. During the week, a COMMON RAVEN was seen on Sunday, 3 LAPLAND =
LONGSPURS and the first OSPREY appeared on Monday, and 70 AMERICAN =
PIPITS and a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER were seen on Thursday. Meanwhile, =
thousands of SNOW GEESE and CANADA GEESE continue to stream past daily.
Away from the Lake, migration continues at a steady pace. AMERICAN =
WOODCOCKS, SONG SPARROWS and FOX SPARROWS have been reported in several =
locations, along with the occasional EASTERN PHOEBE. A few COMMON SNIPE =
were heard winnowing in the marsh off Kellogg Rd at Three Rivers WMA =
today. About 1000 SNOW GEESE and 130 NORTHERN PINTAIL were in a field =
along Co Rt 54 in Pennelville on Sunday, with the SNOW GEESE number =
swelling to about 5000 birds on Tuesday. In Van Buren, a RICHARDSON'S =
GOOSE, a smaller race of CANADA GOOSE, was found among its much larger =
relatives where Dead Creek passes under Rt 31 on Saturday.
On Tuesday, at the Great Swamp Conservancy in Canastota, the waterfowl =
present included 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 2 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, around 50 or =
so NORTHERN PINTAILS, and some HOODED MERGANSERS.
After not being reported in almost a week, the SNOWY OWL in Sauquoit was =
relocated along Bray Rd on Monday. It was seen again on Wednesday in =
the same location - in a field about halfway between Timian Rd and =
Doolittle Rd. On Friday, it was in the field on the opposite side of =
Bray Rd. This area is just north of its original hangout along Sulphur =
Springs Rd.
The NORTHERN HAWK OWL in Root, Montgomery County has been spending more =
of it's time near the next farmhouse to the north of its original =
location. It was seen there on Sunday and Thursday.
On Saturday, March 29, David Wheeler will lead a field trip to Onondaga =
Lake to search for spring migrants. Contact Dave at 622-9891 or =

On Sunday, March 30, Tony Shrimpton will lead a field trip to Derby =
Hill. Contact Tony at 637-7521 or shrimpta(AT)upstate.edu for more =

Subject: Greenwood Lake, NY/NJ
From: Richard Guthrie <gaeltic(AT)CAPITAL.NET>

Greetings to All;
I had a few moments the other evening and thought that I'd investigate
Greenwood Lake, Orange County, NY.
Looking at my DeLorme NY Atlas, it looked promising.
The lake is long and narrow, and in an area lacking other open
water. I thought it would be a good stop-over spot for early
migrant waterfowl.
Big Let-down.
First, I could not find any public access to view the lake. The
shoreline is completely lined with houses of a variety of price-tab
types. Each with their own version of "Keep Out" and "No Tresspassing"
signs.
I thought I saw a few Common Mergansers from between houses,
as I drove along the road (followed too closely by impatient
drivers behind me). So, I resorted to pulling into a marina parking
lot on the NY/NJ border. All I saw was several Mallards and a
group of Ring-billed Gulls at a distance.
I spoke with a local fellow who pulled up on a bicycle. He told
me that this was the "best" time to view the lake. The place
becomes a madhouse when the summer people arrive; boats, anglers,
bass tournaments, jet-skies, litter, kids, cats, dogs, etc...
all over the lake. Even though it was a quiet time, so to speak,
the setting was hardly relaxing. The adjacent state highway is
narrow, winding, and very busy with cars, trucks, and busses,
again, with no place to pull over safely.
So, I guess I should be grateful that I got there during the
"best" time. Even though I didn't see much in the way of interesting
birds.
Bottom line...it looks like a great place not to go out of your
way to visit.

While travelling along NYS Rt. 17, I was happy to see an adult
Bald Eagle perched along the West Branch of the Delaware River
next to NYS Rt 17 at the Delaware/Broome County line. Also, an
Eastern Bluebird on a nest box by Exit 84.

It is my duty to now defend my hometown, Greenwood Lake.
Although 'GWL', as us locals call it, is not particularly well known for its
bird watching opportunities, I would have recommended checking out a marshy
area at the northern tip of the lake where there's often a couple
interesting waterbirds. There is a spring that usually keeps the ice open.
I wouldn't be surprised if the birds you saw were common mergs, this time of
year commons and hoodeds can usually be found. Also there's a little known
hawk watching platform that may have been productive. In addition, the
appalachian trail runs through the town and 'owling' in the area has
revealed great horned owls and great views at my first barred.
The local fellow you refer to (probably a relative of mine, small town) was
right. Greenwood Lake's proximity to NYC makes it very appealing to city
folk on the weekends and it can get fairly hectic. It probably wouldn't be
worth checking out in the summer.
In conclusion:
I wouldn't go out of my way to go bird watching in Greenwood Lake, but if
you're in the area it may be productive if you know where to look...

Hello All,
The Sauquoit Snowy Owl was seen again today from Bray Road in the town of
Sauquoit. I took some great digiscoped photos this morning before the
terrible weather moved in. The owl was extremely close to the road - most
of the pictures were actually taken from inside my car as it was so windy
outside. You can view the photos at my website: www.kidwings.com. Just
click on the link for "Digiscoping" and then "Snowy Owl". Clicking on the
pictures will bring up larger pictures (700 x 500 pixels). The first one is
my favorite - it shows beads of water on its feathers just after a quick
downpour. He was looking pretty wet late this afternoon at 4:30.
Also, I collected a pellet from the owl this morning. It is a rather large
pellet: 4 1/2 inches long. Needless to say, I will add this to my Virtual
Owl Pellet Dissections one of these days. With the weather turing bad this
weekend this owl may continue to hang around.

You had to get to Derby Hill pretty early on Saturday morning to see
the hawk flight. There were 9 Turkey Vultures and a Rough-leg along
with about 4,000 blackbirds and 450 Robins over a half-hour before a
5 minute burst of 253 TV's, 3 Rough-legs, 3 Red-tails and a Sharp-
shinned Hawk just before the rain started at 7:45.
At Noyes Sanctuary on Lake Ontario (end of Nine Mile Pt. Road which
runs along the Scriba/New Haven town line) there were 3 migrant Long-
eared Owls roosting in pines along the trail near the outbuilding.

Compiled: March 29, 2003
We would like to begin this report by apologizing for the lack of
Basin Reports for much of the month of March, due to a recent trip to
Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Now, back to Basin birding...
Birders in the Cayuga Lake Basin witnessed an eventful early spring
migration during the middle weeks of March, highlighted by an unusually
high number of GOLDEN EAGLE sightings. Between March 8-22, an impressive
16 Golden Eagles were seen by various observers in the Basin, with the
majority of these sightings coming from Mt. Pleasant in the Town of Dryden
(SK & SK; KVR; JM & KM; SF & SF; MH; BT). Even more amazing was the total
of 15 Golden Eagles seen by Steve Kelling from his property in the Town of
Caroline (just outside the Basin) on the weekend of March 15-16. During
these two days, Kelling also observed a BALD EAGLE, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, a
NORTHERN GOSHAWK, a MERLIN, four RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, more than 9,500
CANADA GEESE, and almost 1,000 SNOW GEESE migrating northward. These same
species of raptors were also reported in small numbers by observers in the
Basin (KR; JM & KM; MH).
The season's first TURKEY VULTURE report, on March 5, seemed to mark
the start of spring migration, and was followed by almost daily vulture
reports (DN). Small flocks of Red-winged Blackbirds were first reported on
March 12 and 14, with larger flocks (including some females) being seen
later in the month (KM). Warm south winds brought with them a number of
Basin first records for the year (or for the spring), including WINTER
WREN, EASTERN MEADOWLARK, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and AMERICAN WOODCOCK (all March
16); FOX SPARROW (March 19); TREE SWALLOW (March 22); and HERMIT THRUSH
(March 23) (SF; SF & SF, MJT; SF & SF; TJ, GB; EB; BM; AMJ & TJ).
The sighting of a BLUE-WINGED TEAL at Myers on March 9 signaled the
arrival of new dabbling ducks on Cayuga Lake; the drake teal was also
joined by seven WOOD DUCKS at Myers, while a single NORTHERN SHOVELER was
seen at Mud Lock (at the north end of the lake) the same day (JM; SF &
SF). NORTHERN PINTAIL were also reported during the period, with an
impressive report of 1000 pintail in the Savannah Mucklands on March 23
(BH). Even more impressive was an estimate of 10,000 SNOW GEESE in the
Mucklands on the same day, together with an additional 20,000 SNOW GEESE at
Union Springs (SK & SK). While these observers were unable to find any
Ross's Geese in the sea of Snow Geese, one observer did manage to pick out
a ROSS'S GOOSE in the Mucklands on the 23rd. This Ross's Goose came a week
after Ken Rosenberg reported a ROSS'S GOOSE in flight at Stewart Park, in a
flock of Snow Geese. Back in the Montezuma NWR area on March 23, the
year's first OSPREY was seen, along with two LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS and
a very early GREAT EGRET (SK & SK). In fact, this egret sighting matches
the extreme early inland date cited in "Bull's Birds of New York
State." Also reported from the Mucklands on the 23rd was a flock of early
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS (BH).
Perhaps somewhat overlooked in the excitement of early spring was the
discovery of a single BOHEMIAN WAXWING in a large flock of CEDAR WAXWINGS
at Sapsucker Woods on March 17 (BC & TB). While it has eluded some
birders, this Bohemian was seen again at Sapsucker on the 21st (SK).
While most birders seemed to be focusing on the arrival of spring
migrants, there were a number of notable winter birds seen since the last
Basin Report on March 4. After a dearth of NORTHERN SHRIKE sightings in
February, two different individuals were noted in mid-March--one seen along
Rt. 13 in Dryden on the 10th, and another relocated along Ellis Hollow
Creek Road in Dryden on March 14 & 19 (KM; AMJ, BT). One to two EARED
GREBES have been reported sporadically from the Wells College Boathouse in
the Village of Aurora all winter, and two EARED GREBES were reported again
on March 8 (BG & LL). Up to two GYRFALCONS have also been seen in the same
area throughout the winter, and there were two sightings of a GYRFALCON,
with one coming on March 7 from Long Point State Park, and the other coming
the next day from the ice edge in Union Springs (AMJ & TM; BG & LL). After
the Red-necked Grebe invasion at the end of February/start of March,
numbers of these grebes have apparently diminished. A March 9 Cayuga Bird
Club trip led by the McGowans reported three RED-NECKED GREBES from Dean's
Cove, and "more" from Sheldrake. This same field trip yielded 100+ SNOW
BUNTINGS at the Savannah Mucklands and three TRUMPETER SWANS at Myers
Point. At Myers on the 22nd were two RED-NECKED GREBES (SF).
Finally, a trio of sightings from the south end of Cayuga Lake on
March 23 reflects the mixing of winter and spring that is March. An adult
GLAUCOUS GULL, likely the season's last, was seen at both Treman Marine
State Park and at Stewart Park (JG, TL). A group of eight DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANTS at Stewart Park arrived more than a week earlier than last
year's first migrant cormorants, while a flock of twelve BLACK SCOTERS
marked an especially early arrival for this species.
Observers: Thorsten Balsby; Eric Banford; Gladys Birdsall; Ben Clock;
Steve and Sue Fast; Jeff Gerbracht; Bob Guthrie; Meena Haribal; Barbara
Herrgesell; Anne Marie and Tim Johnson; Sam and Steve Kelling; Leona
Lauster; Tim Lenz; Jay and Kevin McGowan; Bob McGuire; Dave Nutter; Ken

I was walking my dog this morning in some farm fields.
There was about 4 inches of snow on the ground and it
was still snowing steadily. I heard birds singing in
the distance and eventually out of the snow came six
Tree Swallows at eye level. It was quite surreal in
that setting. It was reminscent of Mother's Day a
number of years ago when I observed warblers in the
snow in Whiskey Hollow.

Subject: Loons
From: Bill Purcell <wpurcell(AT)TWCNY.RR.COM>
Date: 30 Mar 2003 6:46pm
From Big Bay Marina at the end of Camic Road in Brewerton (actually
town of West Monroe) on Sunday afternooon there were 5 close Common
Loons in breeding plumage and 4 Red-throated Loons further out on
Oneida Lake and due south of the marina. The Red-throateds were in a
line with their heads tucked and moving very slowly westwards for
over 10 minutes before 2 of them picked up their heads and I was able
to clinch the ID. They were still in basic plumage - I have never
seen one in breeding plumage. There were a lot of ducks, mostly C.
Goldeneye, Ring-necked Ducks and Scaup but but I didn't spend a lot
of time looking for rarities since the snow made observation
difficult at times. There are "No Trespassing" signs at the marina
but I have gotten permission in the past and they don't mind birders
being there in March & April. Don't walk on any of the docks.
There was some open water at Phillips Point and as the lake opens
that will be a much better spot for waterfowl. With the snow on the
ground there were lots of Robins, R-W Blackbirds and Grackles feeding
on roadsides and wet areas on lawns along with lesser numbers of
Juncos, Song & Am. Tree Sparrows and a couple of flocks of Rusty
Blackbirds.

Though I did not have much time to view it, what I believe to be a
RUSTY BLACKBIRD visited my yard this morning in a mixed flock of
grackles, red-winged and cowbirds. While I'm on the subject can anyone
elaborate on the differences between RUSTY and Brewer's blackbirds?
I've read all my field guides and books, but still am pretty sure I
still could not differentiate between the two. Thanks.

Subject: Potential Problem with Snowy Owl
From: Jody Hildreth <jody(AT)KIDWINGS.COM>
Date: 31 Mar 2003 12:45pm
Hello All,
I was just observing the Snowy Owl when a gentleman came and actually tried
to trap the owl.
I have called the DEC and given them all of the information that I have.
the gentleman said he was affiliated with a local wildlife rehabiliator. I
do not want to give out any of this information in a public format because
there is always the chance that he has the proper paperwork to carry out
this action.
However, this gentleman knew nothing of which he spoke. He made three false
statements to me:
1. This owl shouldn't be here
2. This owl isn't behaving right - it shouldn't be sitting out in the open
but up in trees.
3. It is not feeding.
I have observed the owl feeding and collected a pellet to prove that. The
owl acts normal - as proven by the fact that it flew away when the gentleman
started to approach it.
I am now waiting to hear back from the DEC. Why would a rehabilitator try
to trap a healthy owl? I am very upset over this.

No rehabilitator would do so, in my opinion. You should call your district
ranger and your Environmental Conservation Officer. Don't wait for office
boys to get back to you. Call the ECO now.
My opinion.

Subject: Snowy Update
From: Jody Hildreth <jody(AT)KIDWINGS.COM>
Date: 31 Mar 2003 2:56pm
Hello All,
An environmental conservation officer was given the information about the
owl and is looking into it. He has called me and I gave him all of the
information. Also, another local birder called the wildlife rehabilitator
that this gentleman said he works with and was told that they received a
phone call about this owl looking sick. They said they went up to observe
it (the wildlife rehabilitator) and saw it fly only a few feet at a time.
So, they decided to try to catch the bird because in their opinion it did
not look healthy.
I guess they may have had the right intentions, but I am upset that the
information I gave the gentleman (that I have observed the owl eating, that
it is found in New York in the winter, and that it normally sits on the
ground and not in the trees) was not taken into consideration before he
walked out to attempt to catch the owl. Also, it appears that this person
just wasn't knowledgeable about Snowy Owls in general.
I still have questions that I hope the environmental officer will be able to
answer such as: do they really have the right permits to do this, can this
individual try this without having a permit himself (he doesn't have a
permit, but the wildlife rehabber does), did he get permission from the
landowner, can anything be done to either educate or prevent this person
from doing something like this in the future?
I do not believe the owl is in any danger. It showed that it can easily fly
away - and I do appreciate the fact that this gentleman gave up on catching
the owl when it flew away so quickly. I guess I am still bothered by all of
this. Shouldn't a wildlife rehabilitator know more about a species before
they try to catch it because they think it isn't healthy?

I stopped to see the owl on my way to the Dr. in Clinton and he was a little
more jumpy than usual. He kept turning to look at me in my car. I did not
stay long because I did not want to harass him. I hope you got a picture of
this person or at least his license number. He does not sound like any kind
of birder even.

YES !
It is one thing to investigate, but quite another to harass.

I am a wildlife rehabilitator with a state and federal license and I have never
heard of such a thing, trying to trap an apparently healthy bird for rehab
purposes? something is not right here, this guy sounds like hes full of BS,
sounds like someone has high hopes of obtaining an owl for falconry purposes or
someone thinks it would be "cool" to have a snowy owl (believe me, they are out
there). If the bird was acting sick, the wildlife rehabilitator should be there
at the scene to show the proper permits, (they are supposed to be on you when
you are in the field). I truly hope this snowy heads back home before that guy
can do any damage. Thanks Jody for keeping an open eye and getting involved,
this is very disturbing.

Subject: Snowy Owl Update
From: Jody Hildreth <jody(AT)KIDWINGS.COM>
Date: 31 Mar 2003 8:41pm
Hello All,
First let me say that the Snowy Owl is safe and well. I watched him for
more than an hour this afternoon in the same location from 3:15 - 4:30. The
entire time he was preening himself thoroughly.
While there, another local birder showed up whom I shared this whole ordeal
with. He has contacted the wildlife rehabilitator and the gentleman who
works with the wildlife rehabilitator (this is the gentleman who actually
tried to catch the owl). Both said that a person from the community called
them with concern for the health of the owl because it was sitting on the
ground and not flying much. The rehabilitator visited the owl (I do not
know for how long) and determined that it would be best to try to catch the
owl to see if it was in any health danger.
I also talked again with the DEC Officer this evening and he still has some
people he needs to talk to about this matter, but he could not say who
specifically.
After talking with this local birder who made contact with the
rehabilitator, I do not feel that the owl is in any danger from the person
attempted to capture it this afternoon. He feels they will not pursue the
option of catching the owl, especially since they were informed that birders
in the area would be keeping a close eye on the bird (as we have been all
along).
However, I still do not feel that this person handled himself in the
appropriate way. They should not have entered the field with the intent to
capture the owl without showing a valid license when asked (I specifically
asked him). Also, they were not knowledgeable about the habits of this
species - if they were they would know that it was acting normally and there
would be no reason to think about catching it.
I am specifically not mentioning any names in this incident because I do not
want someone's reputation tarnished over allegations. It will be
interesting to see what, if any actions, the DEC takes in this situation.
By the way, does anyone know what the latest date for a Snowy Owl in New
York is? It does seem like this owl should be migrating any day now.

Hello All,
I added some new photos of the Snowy Owl (some action shots of him preening)
along with a picture of the person attempting to trap the owl. It is
comical to think that he thought he might walk right up to the owl while
carrying a large bright blue net.

I went to the same two places late this afternoon, also found no teal, in
fact, few ducks at all. I missed nearly everything Andrew had, but saw 3
beautiful pairs of Wood Ducks at Peter Scott Swamp, (between Pennellville and
Phoenix) the most expected first duck there when it opens, in my
expeierience. The Rough-legged Hawk David reported yesterday was still on
Biddlecum Rd. near the SE corner of 264.
