Went looking for owls in the park this evening and found none. But I
did observe my first EASTERN PHOEBE of the seasonal along with 4 WOOD
DUCKS near Round Lake. Also observed a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK southeast of
Round Lake.

Jody,
The late NY date is actually June 6th. I imagine this was after a large
irruption year which I wouldn't consider this year to be. I do now it's not
that uncommon for birds to linger or still be passing through into late
April early May. I suspect this bird could be around for another 1-3
weeks...maybe longer.

Subject: foot of snow will bring the birds
From: Matthew Young <grosbeak(AT)CLARITYCONNECT.COM>

Hello all,
After Monday's 9" and last night's 3.5" there's now a foot plus of snow on
the ground again--this foot of fresh new snow brought in 3 FOX SPARROWS
(consistently singing all day), 75+ DE JUNCOS, a couple of TREE SPARROWS,
and 20 SONG SPARROWS in addition to 18 PURPLE FINCHES. I was able to
somewhat enjoy this early spring snowstorm despite last preparations for my
thesis defense--successfully defended!! --Glad that ball and chain is
behind me!!

Hello All,
Well, I checked the area this morning (and saw a couple other birders up
there too) and the Snowy Owl was no where to be seen. I checked adjacent
fields hoping he had moved but could not relocate him.
I will go up on my lunch break and check again. I simply hope he has
decided today was the day to pack up and head north. It is a shame that the
incident happened yesterday which casts doubts as to the status of this
bird.

Jody,
Based on Gerry Smith's list it seems very possible this bird could have
departed last night or today. Does anyone know if they migrate at night or
during the day? Probably some of both.

Subject: Snowy Owl - yes but far away
From: Jody Hildreth <jody(AT)KIDWINGS.COM>

Hello All,
I did see the Snowy Owl on Bray Road early this morning. After school I
searched and could not find him anywhere. I came home and picked up my
oldest daughter who wanted to go and take pictures of it. She brought me
good luck, because we did find the owl back on Sulphur Springs Road. It was
along the fencerow where it has been seen before, however this time it was
extremely far away. We did not get any good pictures, but at least we found
it. It was also getting very foggy up there (around 4:30).
Also on Bray Road (further down than the owl spot) there was a nice group of
waterfowl including two drake NORTHERN PINTAIL. I wish the lighting was
better for photographs. Also in the mix was the usual Black Duck, Mallard,
and Canada Goose.

Greetings! Another lunch break in the scenic little hamlet of Aurora,
aka PleasantVille. Aurora is located on the east side of Cayuga Lake,
just south of Union Springs on NY-90. Note that this is not I-90 the
Thruway... Anyway...
My first stop was the Wells College Boathouse where I helped a
fledgling Birder ID his first ever breeding plumaged HORNED GREBE. The
Lake was flat calm and nearly devoid of Waterfowl. At about 12:30, I
drove south out of Aurora, and immediately turned right onto Lake Rd.
At 0.2 of a mile, I noticed a distant solitary white statue among the
Cows in the pasture. This is the first pasture on the left BEFORE
cresting the hill. I would have bet is was a Gull, but in the bins it
turned out to be a breeding plumaged CATTLE EGRET!! I put it in the
scope, but is was far too distant for digiscoping. I resolved to return.
Off to Long Point SP., where an adult MERLIN awaited my arrival. The
Bird was perched atop a large tree just north of the bathhouse/
restrooms. I did Digiscope this Bird, but the light was poor. I may
put these shots up on the website, since January I have digiscoped every
Falcon known to frequent NY State!! I bet that won't be an annual
achievement!
On my way back to work, I stopped again at the CATTLE EGRET pasture.
It was even further out, staying with the Cows. Eventually, it ambled
over the rise.

Hello All,
The Sauquoit Snowy Owl was seen this morning and afternoon on Bray Road. It
moved to a slightly different spot of the field, and when I left it at 4:30
it had flown far from the road - beyond the plowed field and back into the
grassy area.

Hello All,
Since we had a snow day from school today, I ventured out to see if I could
find him. I was not disappointed. He is still in the area although he has
moved a bit. He is still in the field off Bray Road but is more easily seen
from Doolittle.
I watched him for at least 1 1/2 hours taking many photographs from inside
my car. He is in a little sheltered area - there is much ice here. In
fact, I parked on a closed road due to power lines being down (but did get
permission from the gentleman in charge of blocking the road). Anyways, the
Snowy Owl is dealing with all of this ice/sleet/rain. He sits for a while,
gets the top of his head full of ice, shakes and preens himself for a few
minutes, and then begins the process all over again. This happened four
times while I was watching him.
Hope to have some of my pictures posted soon.

Hi Jody,
Thank you for your diligent on-going coverage of the Snowy Owl on Paris
Hill. On an historical note, my grandfather saw a Snowy Owl on the summit
of Tassel Hill in the 1920's before the slopes were reforested by the workers
from the C.C.C. camps. I was wondering if you could provide me with the
first
date that you saw the Snowy Owl from the Sulphur Springs Rd., I know it was
before February 20th. when I saw It. Thank you.
Ps. The Gadwall that you saw on March 26th, is the first documented
report of this bird from the Sangerfield Quadrangle, 15 Minute Series 1943.
Thanks, Gene Huggins

Hello,
On the way back today from Albany we stopped at some of the local Southern
Highland ponds and lakes to see if the ice had thawed and too see if any
birds had come in. On Woodman Pond were: 5 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, LESSER
SCAUPS, RING-NECKED DUCKS, COMMON, RED-BREASTED AND HOODED MERGANSERS,
BUFFLHEADS, COMMON GOLDENEYE(1), MALLARDS, BLACK DUCKS, AMERICAN WIGEONS,
MUTE SWAN(1), CANAGA GEESE, COOM LOONS(3), and BONAPARTE'S GULLS(2). The
pond was about 2/3rds thawed and overall numbers were low but diversity high.
Torpy Pond: RING-NECKED DUCK, BLACK DUCKS, MALLARDS, HOODED MERGANSERS(2),
and GREEN-WINGED TEAL(2).
Rt 26 Pond just north of the intersection of Erieville Rd. and Rt26: WOOD

Hello All,
I posted four more pictures of the Snowy Owl to my website. All four
pictures were taken today during the sleet/rain. I did go check on him
again at 3:30 and he was still in the same location. He was getting pelted
with the sleet but not looking too concerned.

Subject: Dunlin/Barn Swallow/Pectoral Sandy
From: David Wheeler <Tigger64(AT)AOL.COM>
Date: 4 Apr 2003 9:32pm
An icy trip to Montezuma this afternoon found a winter-plumaged DUNLIN at
Benning Marsh. A single BARN SWALLOW was also found near the beginning of
Wildlife Drive. Field marks on the Dunlin:
Long, drooping bill, 1.5-2 head-lengths
Quick probing
Plain brown back and wings, no scaling
Pale brown breast
The long drooping bill is distinctive. Primary candidate for confusion would
be with Stilt Sandpiper, whose main spring migration route is apparently
through the midwest and would thus not be expected here. Ref. "Bull's Birds
of NY": "Arrivals are regularly recorded during the first two weeks of
April". However, Bill Purcell's "Spring Arrivals" notes normal arrival
during the second week of May, making this indeed an early bird.
Wednesday-evening survey of southern Oswego County found several dozen COMMON
SNIPE and a single PECTORAL SANDPIPER at Prior Rd. At least 4 AMERICAN
WOODCOCK were peenting and displaying at various locations in Three Rivers at
dusk.

Dunlin was a big problem when I compiled the arrival dates for the
Onondaga Audubon website. Winter plumaged birds, usually singles, do
show up in April but in most years no Dunlin are found in Region 5
until May when they might be be found in floodlands, wet fields and
at Sandy Pond. I decided to go with the second week of May since
that's when breeding plumaged birds can usually be found. Large
flocks are more likely towards the end of May. If I took a weighted
average of something like one April 12th date and three May 12th
dates, that would leave a date that was meaningless.

Subject: Snowy Owl - No
From: Jody Hildreth <jody(AT)KIDWINGS.COM>
Date: 5 Apr 2003 12:30pm
Hello All,
I searched twice this morning (8:15 and 12:00) and could not find the
Sauquoit Snowy Owl. There is a tremendous amount of icing up on the hill
where the owl has been. Perhaps he has found a sheltered area, or perhaps
he decided to head north during the break in the weather early this morning.
There was an active pair of Red-tailed Hawks in the field where he is
normally found and I saw several American Kestrels in the area - two with
fresh kill.
I'll keep looking and hoping he comes back - I can't get enough pictures of
him.

Hello All,
I found a single American Pipit today in New Hartford. It was directly
across the road from Valley Gymnastics (where route 8 ends near Brookside
Athletic Club). It was foraging in a wet grassy area.

Coverage: The Cayuga Lake Basin of central New York, including portions of
Tompkins, Cayuga, Wayne, Seneca, Schuyler and Tioga Counties
Compilers: Mike Andersen and Matt Medler
Compiled: April 5, 2003
The north end of the Cayuga Lake Basin was well-represented with its
share of unusual birds last week. An observer on East Road, just north of
Montezuma NWR, noted an adult LITTLE GULL among several BONAPARTE'S GULLS
on the 30th. The same observer reported a first-winter GLAUCOUS GULL from
Tschache Pool at Montezuma NWR and two LAPLAND LONGSPURS from the Savannah
Mucklands (GC). An early AMERICAN BITTERN was reported from Tschache Pool
on March 29 (TM, BO). The trend in recent years of late March/early April
sightings of SANDHILL CRANES in the greater Montezuma area continued this
year, with the discovery of two Sandhill Cranes from Carncross Road, to the
west of Howland Island WMA, on the 29th; these birds were seen again on the
30th (DN; CG; JS, CS; GC). One LAPLAND LONGSPUR and four PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS were also reported from this locality on the 31st, while
observers noted a fifth PECTORAL and 50 WILSON'S SNIPE on April 1 (TM, BO;
AF, PH). The Main Pool at Montezuma NWR is mostly free of ice, but at
present, does not contain a great diversity or abundance of waterfowl.
Dryden Lake saw a nice diversity of waterbirds during the past week,
including two LONG-TAILED DUCKS and a RED-NECKED GREBE on the 26th (KM;
JM). The grebe was joined by a RED-THROATED LOON on the 27th, which was
accompanied by a second loon on the 29th (BP; JM, KM). At least one
Red-throated Loon remained until the 30th (SFO). Two GREATER YELLOWLEGS
were seen on the 28th while an impressive flock of 65 BONAPARTE'S GULLS and
two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were noted there on the 30th (SF, SF; SFO; JM, KM).
Similar variety was evident at the usual spots at the southern end of
Cayuga Lake. There were four RED-NECKED GREBES, two BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 10
LONG-TAILED DUCKS, three WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and at least eight
BONAPARTE'S GULLS at Stewart Park on the 26th. One of the season's first
SAVANNAH SPARROWS was seen at Stewart Park on the 31st (TL). Four
RED-THROATED LOONS were noted from East Shore on the 27th (SF). A "steady
stream" of BONAPARTE'S GULLS was witnessed late in the morning on the 29th
from the same locale (TL). A report from Myers that afternoon included two
RED-THROATED LOONS, one COMMON LOON, one RED-NECKED GREBE, and one DUNLIN
(JM, KM).
A report from further north on the first of April included a COMMON
LOON, RED-NECKED GREBE and four HORNED GREBES from the Village of Aurora
with two more RED-NECKEDS and ten additional HORNED GREBES along with two
WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS from the Twin Oaks Campground just north of the
Village of Union Springs (AF, PH).
A pair of GOLDEN EAGLES were observed flying over Cornell's North
Campus on the afternoon of the 26th (VL). The BOHEMIAN WAXWING continued
through at least the 26th in the vicinity of Sapsucker Woods (AW, EW,
JW). It has been associating with a roaming flock of several hundred CEDAR
WAXWINGS.
American Pipits made a major push through our area over the weekend,
being noted by multiple observers at a variety of localities. Most notable
was a flock of more than 100 pipits seen on Game Farm Road in the Town of
Dryden on the 30th (AM). Area feeders saw an influx of FOX SPARROWS over
the weekend, with multiple observers reporting anywhere from one to two
dozen birds. At least 26 Fox Sparrows were counted at one yard alone in
Dryden on the 1st (MMc). Other newly-arrived spring migrants include a
male YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER on Gun Hill in Ithaca on the 29th (TL), two
FIELD SPARROWS observed singing at the Mundy Wildflower Garden on the 29th
(CB), and a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER found in a yard in Brooktondale on the
30th (SF, SF).
