# 14 - Friday, April 4, 2003
=20
The winter weather that returned to central New York this week has all =
but stifled migration. A few hundred raptors were tallied at Derby Hill =
last weekend, but none have been seen since Monday. The only notable =
movements past the bluff were about 1000 SNOW GEESE between Wednesday =
and Thursday, and a few BONAPARTE'S GULLS seen flying off Lake Ontario =
on Wednesday.
This same winter weather, however, has brought increased bird activity =
to area feeders. A few feeding stations have reported upwards of 60 - =
70 DARK-EYED JUNCOS, while some other high numbers include 20 SONG =
SPARROWS in Georgetown, and 40 FOX SPARROWS here in Parish. A =
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was a recent visitor to a feeder in Fayetteville, =
while several people have reported RUSTY BLACKBIRDS mixed in with the =
usual GRACKLES, COWBIRDS, and RED-WINGS.
On Saturday morning, 3 LONG-EARED OWLS were found roosting in the pines =
near the shed at Noyes Sanctuary. On Sunday, 1 of the Owls was =
relocated, while a single HERMIT THRUSH was observed foraging near a =
vernal wetland. The sanctuary is located on Lake Ontario near the end =
of Nine Mile Pt Rd in Scriba.
Saturday's field trip to the west shore of Onondaga Lake yielded small =
numbers of a variety of waterfowl, including 3 COMMON LOONS, 1 HORNED =
GREBE, 7 RED-NECKED GREBES, 2 CANVASBACK, 2 REDHEAD, RING-NECKED DUCKS, =
2 RUDDY DUCKS, and all 3 MERGANSERS. On Wednesday, 4 WHITE-WINGED =
SCOTERS joined the group, which was visible from Pleasant Beach. Today, =
5 COMMON LOONS were visible from the Salt Museum in Liverpool.
Five COMMON LOONS and 4 RED-THROATED LOONS were among the waterfowl =
sighted from Big Bay Marina at the end of Camic Rd in West Monroe last =
Sunday. The collection of waterfowl at Peter Scott Swamp on Monday =
included 6 WOOD DUCKS, 2 NORTHERN SHOVELERS and a drake NORTHERN =
PINTAIL, along with several AMERICAN WIGEONS, RING-NECKED DUCKS and =
HOODED MERGANSERS. That same day in Madison County, the flooded fields =
near Bolivar and McGraw Rds contained 1 male BLUE-WINGED TEAL and a =
HORNED GREBE along with 2 pairs of SHOVELERS and 8 PINTAILS. On =
Thursday, 19 LONG-TAILED DUCKS and 2 male RUDDY DUCKS were on the Oneida =
River in Brewerton.
Last weekend, a pair of OSPREY were perched near the nest on the power =
line pole just west of Sixty Road in Three Rivers WMA. Many FOX =
SPARROWS, SONG SPARROWS, TREE SPARROWS and even a FIELD SPARROW were =
found along Potter Rd on Sunday. There were 35 WILSON'S SNIPE, 6 =
AMERICAN PIPITS, 50 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, 10 MEADOWLARKS, and a ROUGH-LEGGED =
HAWK seen at Biddlecum Marsh on Sunday, while around the corner on Prior =
Rd there were 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 10 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and 6 WILSON'S =
SNIPE.
In Sauquoit, the SNOWY OWL continues as of this afternoon. It can =
usually be found in the field located near the corner of Bray Rd and =
Doolittle Rd, but on Tuesday, it was back on Sulphur Springs Rd near =
where it was originally found during the winter.
The next meeting of the Onondaga Audubon Society will be held on =
Tuesday, April 8 at the DeWitt Community Church. The guest speaker will =
be Eli Thomas, a locally well-known artist and member of the Wolf Clan =
of the Onondaga Nation. Mr. Thomas will share his vision of the natural =
world through his art and culture. As usual, the meeting begins at 7:00 =
PM in the basement of the church, and is free and open to the public.
John Moore will be leading 2 field trips within the next week. On =
Saturday, April 5, he will lead a field trip at dusk to the DeWitt Marsh =
to look and listen for displaying American Woodcock. On Sunday, April =
13, he will lead a trip to Onondaga Lake in search of migrating =
waterfowl. For more information on these trips, contact John at =
458-3984 or jhmoor(AT)msn.com =20

Subject: He's Back... plus other birds
From: Jody Hildreth <jody(AT)KIDWINGS.COM>
Date: 6 Apr 2003 5:21pm
Hello All,
The Snowy Owl was seen again this afternoon in the field off Bray Road. I
first saw him around 2:30 and then took my daughters back to photograph him
around 4:00. By 5:15 he had flown far back into the field and was perching
in trees. I did manage to get another pellet - same size as the one before,
so he is definitely eating well.
Other birds in the area:
4 Common Snipe (on Tormey Rd.)
1 Savannah Sparrow (On Bray Rd - digiscoped him)
100's Snow Geese (on Sulphur Springs Rd.)
Fox Sparrow (Bray Rd.)
Unidentified Thrush - there were about 3 of them flying across the road on
Bray. I didn't take the time to stop and positively identify them. They
were mixed in with some Robins.
A good day of birding.

A great Fox Sparrow day in Oswego County. The highest count I got at
my feeders was 26 and later in the morning along various side roads
in Mexico I found another 30. The birds were all feeding along the
scraped roadsides as there was 2 inches of icy snow covering the
ground. There were also about 80 Song Sparrows, 25 Tree Sparrows and
a single Am. Pipit.

Subject: Hermit Thrush
From: Jody Hildreth <jody(AT)KIDWINGS.COM>
Date: 7 Apr 2003 3:52pm
Hello All,
Yesterday I reported seeing three unidentified thrushes. Today I went back
to find them again on Bray Road. I found one, but saw it only for a quick
glance. I did manage to find another one on Greens Crossing Road in
Waterville taking the back roads home. It was feeding along the side of the
road in some wet areas along with Fox and Song Sparrows, Juncos, and
Chickadees. It was very secretive and only gave me a few glances. After
reporting it yesterday, I was wondering if I had misidentified a Fox Sparrow
as a Thrush, but after viewing this bird more closely I am positive that the
bird I saw (at least today) is a Hermit Thrush.
It did not have a centralized spot on its breast like a Fox Sparrow and its
streaking on the breast was also thinner than the Fox Sparrows. Overall,
the bird appeared thinner than a Fox Sparrow. The bill was also thinner and
longer than a sparrow. Its back was more uniformly brown unlike the Fox
Sparrow's that show areas of gray and the tail was a lighter brown than the
back.
I did look at the Onondaga Audubon Society's website for early arrival dates
(http://www.onondagaaudubon.org/arrivals.htm) and it lists Hermit Thrush as
April 8 - 15 - so it is just a touch early for this species. The whole area
where I saw these birds is still heavily covered in ice, and I believe that
is why so many birds are coming to the wet areas by the road to feed. Has
anyone else seeing this species?

Hello All,
I did see the Snowy Owl in Sauquoit this morning from 8:00 - 8:30 in the
field off Bray Road. I checked again at 2:30 and could not relocate him. I
drove around the block three times and checked all of the common areas. I
did however, find a beautiful Rough-legged Hawk that was eating something it
had caught out in the field off Timian Road. I'll search again tomorrow
morning.

I had 1 Wilson's Snipe near the ponds of Greenview Golf Course on Rt 49 =
in West Monroe this afternoon.
At Phoenix, the water is very high - the bottom half of the fisherman's =
access area is under water, and the water on the "low" side of the dam =
is just about near the top of the spillway. Still there were a few =
birds around, including:
1 Red-necked Grebe
7 Cormorants
3 Goldeneye
2 Bufflehead
60-70 Tree Swallows coursing over the river
At Biddlecum Marsh, there was only a Great Blue Heron and a Muskrat.
Around the corner on Prior Rd:
2 flyby Wood Ducks
10 Green-winged Teal
4 Blue-winged Teal
2 Northern Pintail
10 Killdeer=20
24 Wilson's Snipe
1 female Northern Harrier flew by scaring up all the ducks and =
shorebirds

Highlights from a ride to see what's around not far from Baldwinsville. No
rarities:
-Osprey on nest on Sixty Rd. in Three Rivers WMA, as reported earlier
-1 Northern Harrier and 1 Killdeer on Barnard Rd. near Biddlecom-Schroeppel
-1 Rough-legged Hawk NW corner of Biddlecum/264- Probably same one as last
week on SE corner?
-2 Am Black Ducks and 4 pair of Ring-necked Ducks at Peter Scott Swamp, which
was mostly frozen again on the west side of the road
-24 Double-crested Cormorants- Phoenix (museum site)
-3 snipe- far west end of the Lysander pony farm
-1 pair of Bufflehead, 3 pair of Ring-necked Ducks, a Turkey Vulture on the
ice with a carcass of some sort, GBH- Beaver Lake, which is now partly open
-Great Blue Herons on nests in the heronry on Fenner Rd. near Rte. 370,
Lysander. I could not see if there was an Osprey in a nest, it is too far. I
did see an Osprey near the nests in March.
-2 wigeon in with Canada Geese, Mallards and gulls in the flooded field on
Rte. 31 near Jordan -Onondaga Cty.
- Pair of shoveler in mucklands on Towpath Rd. (off Maiden La. near Pt.
Byron, N of rte. 31) Cayuga Cty.
-2 Greater Yellowlegs- Towpath Rd. also
-1 Male Belted Kingfisher- VanBuren- Conners Rd. lowland wetland near Rte. 31
Out of the region- Only 1 Snow Goose in with Canadas in Montezuma mucklands,

Subject: Major Fallout of AMERICAN PIPITS
From: "MattV." <fickity(AT)NETSCAPE.NET>
Date: 8 Apr 2003 5:40pm
Greetings! I had amazing numbers of AMERICAN PIPITS today in the Town
of Aurora, Cayuga County, east side of Cayuga Lake. A flock of 12-20
Birds was present all day in the seep in front of where I work. Many
other Birds were heard and seen as they streamed overhead. Oddly, all
appeared to be coming from the west side of Cayuga Lake. On the way
home, I found PIPIT flocks on Gully, Levanna and Mosher Roads. Wow!
Other Birds today were a trio of SAVANNAH SPARROWS, along with singles
of the following: FOX SPARROW, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, EASTERN PHOEBE and
NORTHERN HARRIER. These sightings occurred at work, 4 driveways south
of Mac-Childs. Two weeks ago, we cut and assembled 30 BlueBird boxes.
I put up 10 so far. Lots of prospectors today!! Anyone else see that

Subject: Snowy Owl, Snipe
From: Jody Hildreth <jody(AT)KIDWINGS.COM>
Date: 8 Apr 2003 6:12pm
Hello All,
After not seeing the Snowy Owl this morning, I did relocate him at 3:30 this
afternoon on Sulphur Springs Road. He was well hidden sitting far away from
the road next to a fence post.
Over on Tormey Road, in Sauquoit, there were 14 Wilson's Snipe in a tiny wet
area that was about 10 feet square. A great photo opportunity.
We will be heading down to Jekyll Island, Georgia this Thursday. So, I will
not be around to check on the owl. If anyone else checks on it, please post
your findings. I am curious to know how long he stays - and I doubt he will

It sounds like you were somewhere near the Salt Museum in Liverpool, Kevin.
I looked at the lake late morning from Willow Bay (west end, near the outlet)
and saw black and white also; mostly C. and Red-breasted Mergs and
Double-crested Cormorants. But there was at least one Common Loon, quite
close, and possibly as many as 6. I wondered how many loons there really are
on the lake right now.

Today at 2:35pm Maryanne and I saw a pair of Turkey Vultures mating on =
top of an old wooden silo at a "T" intersection in North Victory in =
Cayuga county. We could not find the exact intersection in the DeLorme =
Atlas. Anyway, it was the first time either of us ever witnessed TUVU =

nesting at this location or at least somewhere close by. (?)=20
Also encountered many American Pipits along the road sides and run-offs =
in fields. One such stream in a field off Ira Station Rd had 26 Wilson's =
Snipe and ~30 American Pipits.

East winds are not very common hereabouts but at Derby Hill they are
generally not very good for migration because there are usually low
clouds/overcast and precipitation associated with them. Falcons might
fly as well as low numbers of other species such as Sharp-shinned
Hawks and Harriers that depend less on soaring and more on powered
flight.
SE winds are very good for hawk migration because they are usually
associated with low pressure system moving thru the Great Lakes and
that system drags in warm southern air, bringing migrating birds with
it. Light to moderate NE can also be good when there are good
thermals.

Tried of sitting in the house so went to Woodmans Pond. Trip was great.
Near a Creek on Babcock Hill Rd. saw Green Winged Teals, and American
Pipits. Saw lots of Canada Geese in the fields. At Woodmans Pon were
Canada Geese, Canvasback, Ring-necked, Bufflehead. Pied-billed grebes, Great
blue herons and 2 Common Loons. Made my day. One of them called and I got
to watch it do the calling. The other one answered. Almost the whole pond
was between the two. Also saw a Northern Harrier.
On Eton and Lebanon were the same mix plus Hooded merganser and common
mergansers.
On the way back home I stopped side of the road in Sangerfield where there
looks like a marsh in the field. There were lots of Snow Geese.
Much better day than waching it snow.

Subject: Green Lakes Raptors
From: Derek and Kristin <dewhite5(AT)A-ZNET.COM>
Date: 10 Apr 2003 5:25pm
I took a walk with my daughter up to the camp ground area early this
afternoon. An AMERICAN KESTEL (female) was hunting the fields along the
road up. On my way back down a NORTHERN HARRIER was flying around the
fields southwest of the kestrel. As I came upon the kestrel again it
flew up and soared above some pines. While viewing it I noticed 3 hawks
way up above it. Two were RED-TAILED HAWKS and the third appeared to be
a juvenile BALD EAGLE. I had trouble viewing it because of the height
and the fact I was carrying my daughter on my back. It was almost twice
as large as the red-tails, mostly dark below with lighter (whitish)
coloration on the underwing coverts with a small band of white/gray near
the base of the tail. The broad wings were laid flat with no flapping.
The trio slowly glided northward over the entrance and past the canal.

Hello All,
I observed the Sauqouit Snowy Owl from about 6:15 to
6:45pm this evening. He was on the ground, about 1/2
way down the barbed wire fence (cowpath?) on Sulphur
Springs Road, accross from the green house, just down
from Timian Road.
I was just about ready to give up on him, having
thought that he left town with Jody, when I spotted
him. This is the first time that I've found him along
that fencerow in quite some time.
Maybe we have a record "late departure" bird here???

Hi All,
About 10:30 this morning, a flock of Snow Geese flew over my house (in
the southeast quadrant of Canastota). They looked stunning in the sun with my
binoculars. I kept saying "Oh, my God" because I've never seen more snow
geese in my life. They were extremely high, yet the racket was incredible.
They were heading straight north in partial V-formations. It's hard to count
enormous numbers like these....I estimated about 90,ooo.
Cheers,

From: Barbara Herrgesell <HerPartB(AT)AOL.COM>

Finally, after many trips, I was able to surely ID an Osprey on a nest in the
heronry on Fenner Rd. in the Town of Lysander this noon. They are here every
year, but after seeing one in March, I have not seen one clearly defined
since. Today I watched the nest (quite far back from the road) for about 1/2
hour (with a scope), just barely able to make out a possible Osprey moving
around on a nest, but not flying and no mate. After going other places I
returned to find two Ospreys perched in trees near each other. They flew and
took different perches once, then one flew to the nest where I've thought I
was seeing one for a couple weeks now, and which I had been viewing earlier.
Great Blue Herons are in nearby nests.
A meadowlark showed up in its usual field on Wheaton Rd. in Lysander.
At Beaver Lake (Vann Rd.) Turkey Vultures are having a feast on the ice on
the lake, of dead fish. Otherwise there were only gulls and Canada Geese and
one goldeneye.

# 15 - Saturday, April 12, 2003
The low pressure system parked along the coast brought strong southeast =
winds to Derby Hill yesterday, resulting in the third highest raptor =
total for the year to date. A total of 1448 hawks were tallied at the =
hawkwatch, with just about half that total being TURKEY VULTURES. On =
Thursday, the fourth BLACK VULTURE of the season was counted late in the =
day, setting a new season record for that species. A BLACK VULTURE, =
presumed to be the same individual, was seen again on Friday, flying in =
a southwesterly direction. The few arrivals noted there yesterday =
included 7 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 1 BARN SWALLOW, and 3 EASTERN TOWHEES =
singing and calling in the hedgerows.
Call it the bird that won't go away. On Thursday and Friday afternoons, =
the SNOWY OWL was still present in Sauquoit in the fields bordered by =
Sulphur Springs, Doolittle, Bray, and Timian Rds. A few other birds =
seen in the area there include a SAVANNAH SPARROW on Sunday, a =
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK on Monday, and 12 WILSON'S SNIPE on Tormey Rd on =
Tuesday. In nearby Waterville, a HERMIT THRUSH was spotted feeding =
alongside Greens Crossing Rd on Monday, and an AMERICAN PIPIT was seen =
foraging in a wet grassy area in New Hartford on Saturday.
Last weekend, 7 RUDDY DUCKS, a RED-NECKED GREBE and a dozen BONAPARTE'S =
GULLS were at the inner harbor in Syracuse. Along the west shore of =
Onondaga Lake on Tuesday, a raft of about 1000 ducks consisted of at =
least 10 species, including 4 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, both SCAUP, =
RING-NECKED DUCKS, COMMON GOLDENEYE, COMMON MERGANSERS and single HORNED =
and PIED-BILLED GREBES. At least a half dozen COMMON LOONS have also =
been spotted on the lake. Woodmans Pond in Madison County had 14 =
species of waterfowl last Friday, highlighted by 5 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, 3 =
COMMON LOONS, a MUTE SWAN, LESSER SCAUP, AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, and all 3 =
MERGANSERS, plus 2 BONAPARTE'S GULLS. By Wednesday, some CANVASBACK and =
PIED-BILLED GREBES were present as well.
Last Friday, April 4, a PECTORAL SANDPIPER and a dozen WILSON'S SNIPE =
were at Prior Rd in Schroeppel. By Monday, the SNIPE total had doubled =
to 24, and the small group of ducks there included 10 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, =
4 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, and 2 NORTHERN PINTAIL. Additionally, there were 5 =
RUSTY BLACKBIRDS among the large flock of ROBINS in the adjoining field. =
On Tuesday, 3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were among 500 HORNED LARKS along Rt 54 =
about 1 mile south of Pennelville.
Large numbers of FOX SPARROWS were encountered in Oswego County last =
Sunday. There were 21 at a feeder in Parish, 26 at feeder in Hastings, =
and another 30 found feeding along several streets in the town of =
Mexico, where they were joined by 80 SONG SPARROWS, 25 TREE SPARROWS and =
an AMERICAN PIPIT.
On Tuesday, a pair of TURKEY VULTURES were spotted mating atop an old =
silo in Victory, Cayuga County. Also from that area, along Ira Station =
Rd, there were 26 WILSON'S SNIPE and 30 AMERICAN PIPITS in a wet field.
A pair of BARRED OWLS were heard calling in Whiskey Hollow on Monday. =
On Wednesday, a GREAT EGRET was at the Town of Van Buren Park on Connors =
Rd, and a SAVANNAH SPARROW was on nearby Perry Rd. A pair of OSPREY =
were spotted on a nest in an active heronry along Fenner Rd in Lysander =
yesterday, while another heronry along Rt 298 in Cicero Swamp has about =
30 active nests. Finally, a CHIPPING SPARROW showed up at a feeder in =
Fayetteville yesterday morning.

Snowy was outstanding in his field near the intersection of Bray and
Doolittle Roads, north side, at 8:30 this morning when I left. He has about
75 feet out in the field and seemed to be enjoying the morning sun.
The owl was sharing the field with a small flock of horned larks.

Hi,
I just had a female Purple Finch in my yard-- 4:30 PM Saturday at one of
the BOSS feeders. I keep hearing what surely sounds like a House Wren, but
the migration dates checklist says the wren isn't supposed to be here yet. I
haven't seen it, just heard it. Do you think it could be here??

From: Joe DiFabio <jgdx(AT)A-ZNET.COM>

Hello,
I observed the Sauquoit Snowy Owl today from 3:30 to 4:30pm in the field =
on the north side of Bray Road, about 200 yards down from Doolittle.
The bird was about 200' from the road, and did not wander from the spot, =
for the entire hour that I observed him. He would occasionally preen, =
but other than that, it looked as if was just enjoying the sunshine.

Subject: New Heronry
From: joe brin <jnnbrin(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 12 Apr 2003 5:44pm
It seems like a month since I got out but today I
finally got to do some birding. The most interesting
find is an apparent new Great Blue Heron nesting site.
The location is the big pool on the left hand side of
60 Rd. almost to Lamson Rd. This area is in the Three
Rivers Game Management Area in the Town of Lysander in
Onondaga County. The birds are on a small island of
about a dozen trees and five nests were in evidence.
One nest was evident all winter. Another point of
interest is that this pool held a substantial Heronry
in the 70s, perhaps three dozen nests, but over time
the trees died and fell.
Also a pair of Osprey were at the nest on the
power pole just south of this pool. One of the birds
was seen adding sticks to the nest.

Hello,
A trip around Southern Highland lakes/ponds/reservoirs was slower than
anticipated, but still fun. Areas covered were, Torpy Pond, Eaton Res.,
Tuscarora Lake, DeRuyter Res., Woodman Pond, Hatch Lake, BRadley Brook
Res., and the West Eaton Mill Pond. Many of the larger bodies are still
quite frozen.
Species observed were: GREEN-WINGED TEALS, BLACK DUCKS, MALLARDS, AMERICAN
WIGEON, LESSER SCAUPS, RING-NECKED DUCKS, BUFFLEHEADS, COMMON GOLDENEYES,
COMMON MERGANSERS, HOODED MERGANSERS, SNOW GEESE, CANADA GEESE, MUTE SWAN,
COMMON LOONS, and PIED-BILLED GREBES. Woodman Pond, as usual, harbors most
of the aforementioned species and the best overall diversity.
At Penoyer Rd. were 25+ AMERICAN PIPITS, SINGING HORNED LARKS, and a
harassing COOPER'S HAWK.
At my feeders, 10-20 PURPLE FINCHES, a couple of FOX SPARROWS, 2
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, a few TREE SPARROWS, and singing GOLDFINCHES
continue.

Coverage: The Cayuga Lake Basin of central New York, including portions of
Tompkins, Cayuga, Wayne, Seneca, Schuyler and Tioga Counties
Compilers: Mike Andersen and Matt Medler
Compiled: April 12, 2003
Despite occasionally discouraging weather, the first week of April
produced a good week of birding in the Cayuga Lake Basin. The highlight of
the week was a breeding-plumaged CATTLE EGRET seen on April 2 in a pasture
just south of the Village of Aurora (MV). As is often the case with this
rare visitor to the Basin, this individual was only seen on one day by a
single observer before seemingly moving on.
Early April is often a good time for seeing uncommon sea ducks like
Long-tailed Duck and the scoters as they migrate through the Basin, and
this past week was an especially good one for these species. Small flocks
of LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen from the south end of Cayuga Lake, Dryden
Lake, and even East Road at Montezuma between April 2 and 5 (SF; TL; KR;
JM; MH). A number of these same observers also noted WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS
with their Long-tailed Ducks, with these scoters being seen from the south
end of Cayuga Lake April 4, 5, 6, and 8 (KR; MH; MY; TL). Three male
White-winged Scoters were also found on the 4th in the rather odd location
of a small wooded pond in the Village of Dryden (JM). A single male SURF
SCOTER, the Basin's first of the year, was seen from Ithaca's East Shore
Park on April 2 (SF). There was a good fallout of migrant waterfowl at
Stewart Park on April 4, with the following impressive numbers noted: 600
LESSER SCAUP, 200 BUFFLEHEAD, 100 RING-NECKED DUCKS, and 30 RUDDY DUCKS,
along with the aforementioned Long-tailed Ducks and White-winged Scoters
(KR). Decent numbers of RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, a relatively uncommon
migrant, were also noted from Stewart Park and Dryden Lake during the past
week.
While hundreds to thousands of Common Loons can be seen passing over
Cayuga Lake on a given morning in fall migration, observers typically see
isolated individuals or small numbers during spring migration. A total of
at least 73 COMMON LOONS along the east side of Cayuga Lake on April 3 is
thus quite noteworthy (SF). RED-THROATED LOON is usually a fairly scarce
migrant, especially in the spring, but one to two individuals were noted
from Stewart Park and East Shore Park between April 2 and 6.
Several notable species that have been seen in previous weeks were
seen again this past week by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Spring Field
Ornithology (SFO) groups. Two EARED GREBES (one in breeding plumage), were
seen from the Wells College Boathouse in the Village of Aurora on April 5
(PH, MY, SFO). These two birds were joined by three HORNED GREBES and a
single RED-NECKED GREBE. The two SANDHILL CRANES found near Howland Island
WMA in the Town of Savannah were seen by several SFO groups on April 5,
while one SFO group on the 6th reported a third Sandhill Crane in the same
area (BO, SFO). Finally, one SFO group reported two TRUMPETER SWANS from
Crusoe Island on the 5th (MY, SFO).
New arrivals to the Basin during the past week include a BARN SWALLOW
seen foraging in a flock of TREE SWALLOWS over Cayuga Inlet on April 3, a
male PURPLE MARTIN at Stewart Park on April 5, and a CASPIAN TERN at Myers
Point on the 5th (DN; MH; JG, LL, SFO). Migrants that continue to pass
through the area include BONAPARTE'S GULL, with flocks of 20 and 30 noted;
FOX SPARROW, still noted at feeders; and AMERICAN PIPIT, with a flock of
100 seen in the Town of Ithaca. Two DUNLIN were noted from Myers Point on
April 5, a week after the year's first Dunlin was also seen there (MH). A
very early sighting of Great Egret on March 23 has been followed now by the
appearance of two GREAT EGRETS at Dryden Lake, first seen on April 3 (JM &
KM). Finally, an immature NORTHERN SHRIKE was observed just out of the
Basin in the Town of Caroline on April 7 and 8 (SK & SK). This individual,
likely the area's last Northern Shrike of the season, was observed feeding
on, and caching, a Fox Sparrow.

Subject: Fair Haven Beach State Park-closed and misc. sightings
From: Barbara Herrgesell <HerPartB(AT)AOL.COM>
Date: 12 Apr 2003 10:07pm
The park is closed still, as of noon today (Sat.), which is not to say it
won't be open tomorrow, but I doubt it. The West Barrier Beach was open, but
covered with branches, and birdless, including the bay (except for 2
Pied-billed Grebe) and the lake, at least in close. Sterling, as you know,
was one of the areas hardest hit by the ice storm. A woman I met in Red Creek
(Town of Wolcott) today said she just got her power on last night after 8
days without it and water.
On Cayuga St. in Fair Haven village 3 pair of Purple Finches (raspberry
colored, no dark stripes on sides of males, females with light line over the
eyes) were at a feeder.
Shorebirds are returning to the Pony Farm in Lysander. At least 2 Pectorals
and 2 Lesser Yellowlegs were among about 7 shorebirds around the pond.
Beaver Lake in Lysander is all open now. Ring-necked Duck pairs and wigeon
pairs were among the gulls and geese.
Ducks, mostly Aythya, covered Blind Sodus Bay (Wayne County). A phoebe was
near a house along Blind Sodus Bay Rd.
Turkey Vultures were numerous everywhere, both in singles and kettles.
