Still suffering from a bad case of March Madness, this female purple =
finch came to town to get a glimpse of the National Champions during =
Saturday's parade. I put her up for the night, and she ate breakfast in =
the morning. Still hasn't left yet, maybe she likes the hustle and =
bustle of the city.
This is a first for my yard after years of checking finch after finch =
hoping for at least one to show up. Heck, I've had redpolls show up a =
couple of seasons, never a purple finch.
Also, I've had more of a variety of birds stay at the feeding station =
this year than I've had in a long time (early '90s). For the first time =
I had white-throated sparrows stay the entire winter. Lots of snow =
isn't always so bad.

Subject: Can You Her(onry) Me Now??
From: Judy Wright <wryton(AT)EARTHLINK.NET>

There's a small cell tower on the west side of Rte 57 in Clay. It's
not far 100-200 yds from the road between Gaskin Rd. and Soule Rd.
There are 2 prs of Great Blue Herons building nests on the tower. From
a quick look while driving the tower seems to sit high and dry, not in
a wetland.
Does anyone know where the water went in the big pond on the 60 Rd. in
the 3 Rivers WMA? I've been away almost a week and was surprised this
morning to see the pond almost waterless. I assume a very old dam must
have broken during the ice storm. Can't ever remember seeing this
particular pond dry up in spring. The herons there, mentioned by Joe
Brin, were still busy buliding.

There are still lots of horned larks on Skyline Drive outside of Clinton. I
was checking for a Longspur but still no luck. I got to see a lark taking a
dust bath and several of the males doing there display. They look like they
would hit the ground before they open their wings. It sure is a great
sight.
The snowy owl was still on Bray Rd. He must have been standing in a hole
because all I could see was his eyes and the top of his head. Weird sight.

Hello,
I was able to get out for a little while today. Nice day to be out =
but there wasn't a whole lot of bird activity. At Lamson Pony Farm =
there were some Killdeer and a kestrel hunting from the telephone wires =
but that's about it. I couldn't find any other shorebirds. Prior Road =
was empty but Biddlecum Marsh did have a few Ring-necked Ducks, =
Green-winged Teal and Northern Pintail. I wasn't able to check Peter =

Sparrows continue at my feeders. That's all for now.

Subject: Southern Highland Goshawks and Ravens
From: Matthew Young <grosbeak(AT)CLARITYCONNECT.COM>
Date: 13 Apr 2003 6:11pm
Hello all,
Today Julie and I ventured out with Jim Spencer to check for nesting
Goshawks, Red-shouldered Hawks, and any other large nesting woodland bird.
Jim is basically the guy who has almost singlehandedly documented nesting
Goshawks and other woodland raptors along the Tug Hill and Southern
Hughlands since the 60's. He found nesting Red-shouldereds and Goshawks in
the Southern Highlands when others thought he was crazy. He also has been
banding birds with a crew from PA since the 60's. Anyways, we had a very
successful day. Our first stop was Highland Forest where we were greeted by
a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at the Education Center. Highland Forest is
basically the first place in the county that Goshawks nested--Which brings
us to the next sighting. We were off to check on one of the Goshwak nests.
When we arrived at the Goshawk nest we were amazed to see not a Goshawk,
but two irritated COMMON RAVENS. The RAVENS have apparently taken over what
was historically a Goshawk nest. I believe this could be the first
confirmed Onondaga County Raven nest. Also, this nest might be the first
nest confirmed in a larch tree. Most, if not all, raven nests to date have
been found in red and white pines, or on towers and cliffs. After many
field hours one can definitely tell the difference between a raptor nest
and a raven nest--the raven nest is much cleaner, tighter, and perhaps more
bowl-like than the messy nests of the woodland raptors. Pretty Cool! In
past years as many as 2 different pairs of Goshawks have nested at the
Highland Forest, so, off we went to the next location. Upon arriving at the
next location we were pleasantly surprised to see an ADULT NORTHERN GOSHAWK
working at a new nest not more than 25ft. from the old nest it used last
year. Also, heard/seen at Highland were many GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, BROWN
CREEPERS, DE JUNCOS, and PURPLE FINCHES.
Our next stop was DeRuyter State Forest were Goshawks were confirmed
nesting last year. While we didn't find a bird at the same nest we found
them in last year, we did find a GOSHAWK nest not far from last year's nest
that looked like it was more than likely going to be used this year--It had
all the evidence-- downy feathers, new branches, and fresh evergreen sprigs.
At Tioghnioga WMA we first checked on a nest that had been a Red-Shouldered
Hawk nest in 2001, but was taken over in 2002 by a Red-tailed Hawk. Well,
the nest is looking like its going to be used, but we did not find a bird.
Based on the evidence it looks like the nest might be a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK
nest again-- I'll have to follow up on it. The location has traditionally
harbored Red-Shouldered Hawks since 1998 and the area looks better suited
for that species than a Red-tail. We checked other Goshawk nests in the
area but we did not find any.
When Jim dropped me off at the Highland Forest office a little after 3pm we
were greeted by a croaking COMMON RAVEN that was in the process of chasing
off a GOSHAWK. The whole time this was happening it appeared that the one
Raven was communicating with the other Raven--Just an amazingly interesting
species!
Before heading home Julie and I decided to check on the pair of COMMON
RAVENS a top Muller Hill to see if they had weathered the ice storm OK.
While walking down the hill, which was an obstacle course with all the
downed debris, we heard the two RAVENS having an interesting dialogue of
croaks, grunts, barks, knocks, crow-like sounds AND MORE. We also saw a
FEMALE YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER while checking on the Ravens.
On DeRuyter Reservoir were 10+ RING-NECKED DUCKS and a COMMON LOON.
Forgot to mention from yesterday's trip we had an EASTERN PHOEBE at Hatch
Lake and a lone TREE SWALLOW at Woodman Pond.
As a side note we heard WOOD FROGS vocalizing for the first time this year
while at DeRuyter State Forest. Additionally, PEEPERS were vocalizing in
force. Lastly, we saw 2 MOURNING CLOAK butterflies near Erieville and SKUNK
CABBAGE emerging in many of the local wetlands.

Hello everyone
I went to the Noyes Sanctuary today to look for owls and to clear brush.
I didn't find any owls but I did manage to clear a lot of brush using
just my camp saw. The damage actually was not very bad, its location
near the lake probably helped. The outer most perimeter trails are now
clear. The inner trails are still in need of clearing . Not much bird
activity, but I did see two Empids that I couldn't identify.
Oswego Harbor had several Bonaparts Gulls and a breeding plumage Common
Loon.

Birds do fly, as they say! I had shorebirds at the Pony Farm yesterday, but
I could find no spring ducks at Biddlecum Marsh today. There was a pair of
goldeneye and Rusty Blackbirds.
I finally found some ducks at Peter Scott Swamp; about a dozen shoveler in
the SW open area where ducks usually are. The harrier was there also.
At the Depot Rd. swamp in West Monroe there were 3 pair of wigeon, 1 pintail
and a swan... don't know for sure whether Tundra or Trumpter. It had a
grayish neck and all black bill as far as I could see. (I won't say that it
looked large...nothing to compare it with!).
Mallory (Town of Hastings) pond had 5 hoodies.
In Caughdenoy, a little dead end road called Riviera has a horse pasture and
a nice wetsy area next to it with 17 snipe and dozens of Tree Swallows.
Better these than nothing, even if no rarities! Nice to have sun! And kudos
to all those utility and highway workers who made it possible to be out on
all the roads.

Hello all,
Yesterday seemed the like first day of spring in many ways. I walked out
the door at 8am and a YELLOW-BELLLIED SAPSUCKER was tapping and 2 PILEATED
WOODPECKERS flew into the back of the yard. I also spied 3 CHIPPING
SPARROWS and a FIELD SPARROW at the feeders. Just down hill on Crumb Hill
RD. TREE SWALLOWS were flying around and a EASTERN MEADOWLARK was balancing
on one of the wires. Furthermore, 4 AMERICAN WOODCOCKS are displaying
across the street, and for the last 4 nights a RUFFED GROUSE has been
drumming around midnight. Have others heard Grouse drumming that late into
the evening? I've heard them just after sundown before but not midnight.
Lastly, 6 COMMON MERGANSERS on the small pond across the street.

Subject: Predict Changes in Territory
From: Tim Capone <tcapone(AT)TWCNY.RR.COM>

I was looking over the NYS Atlas of Breeding Birds recently thinking =
that the new atlas will have some big changes for our area when it is =
published even though it wasn't that long ago that the first book was =
published.
Based on my luck finding them, some of the birds that I thought will =
significantly increased their number of atlas blocks are mockingbirds, =
Carolina wrens, fish crows, dark-eyed juncos and red-bellied woodpeckers =
and of coarse double-crested cormorants. Birds that will decrease their =
number of blocks I think are harder to figure out, but I find it much =
harder to find breeding common nighthawks than in the past and it's =
harder to find wood thrush around the city. I'd even add indigo =
buntings to that list of decreasing birds.
I don't get out birding as much as I use to (commitments and duties), =
and when I do, it's much closer to the city. I use to get out all over =
the place, so the changes I see might be more likely due to changes in =
my birding habits. I wouldn't doubt if there is a better effort of =
atlasing this time around maybe due to an increase in participation so a =
lot of birds might have an increase in atlas blocks due to this. I'm =
guessing the last book was good advertising for the effort.
I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share their thoughts on my =
comments and maybe add some birds to the lists of increasing blocks and =
decreasing blocks.

Hello,
Ravens, Ospreys, B. Eagles, Acadian Flycatchers, Prairie, Pine and perhaps
Parula Warblers, and Merlins are definitely a few birds I feel have
increased the most statewide since the last atlas. Other decreasers would
be Meadowlarks, Henslow's, Uppies, Red-headed woodpeckers, Golden-winged
warblers, Grass. sparrows, Field Sparrows, B. Thrashers, Black Ducks, and
other grassland and shrubland species.

Hello,
We spent a good amount of time on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning =
searching for the Snowy Owl, without any luck.
We checked all the usual locations, and even started radiating out =

With very little snow left, he would have stuck out like a sore thumb, =
so it's my guess that he's finally headed north.
Having him around for so long was a real joy, but all good things must =

From: Barbara Herrgesell <HerPartB(AT)AOL.COM>
Date: 15 Apr 2003 11:56pm
I don't know if Blue-winged Teal has been reported for Peter Scott Swamp
(Schroeppel, near Phoenix) yet. There were 6 there just after sunset this
evening. One showed the white facial crescent when they were at rest, then
there was a nice display of blue wings as they flew back farther into the
swamp.
No shorebirds at the Pony Farm on Lamson Rd. in Lysander when I went by there
today.
I had the treat of seeing a woodcock on her nest in one of my blocks today. I
never would have seen it if it weren't for the homeowner taking me to it. He
found the nest with 3 eggs in it when he was blazing a new trail through a
woodlot in his yard after the ice storm took down many branches. She never
moved as we watched for a couple minutes from just a few yards away. Talk
about camouflage!
Beaver Lake Nature Center west of Baldwinsville is open, but the ice storm
really hit it hard. They have done an amazing job of clearing a few trails
for walking. The Wood Ducks are doing fine, I hear, though I didn't see any
today.
Good spring birding!

Hello,
Yesterday, I had a yard first and a first ever MIGRATING NORTHERN
MOCKINGBIRD-- Yes, a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD. Mockingbirds don't nest anywhere
within 10-15 miles of me and this particular individual was flying directly
north without hesitation. Mockingbird movements are relatively poorly
understood with some individuals staying local, and other individuals
moving some distance south for the colder winter months--a winter
retraction so to speak.
As I was taking my thesis to be printed and bound today I heard FISH CROWS
on campus flying over Bray Hall.
At the feeders I have a lingering FOX SPARROW, a newly arrived
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, CHIPPING SPARROWS, 10+ PURPLE FINCHES, and 2
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES. Also, a COOPER'S HAWK flying slowly over the house
yesterday. The FIELD and SWAMP SPARROWS, and late night night drumming
RUFFED GROUSE all continue near the house.

This is not about birds. But I think habitat is also important.
Onondaga Audubon Society recently had a speaker talk about invasive
species that were introduced through shipping in the Great Lakes and
the St. Lawrence River. He did not mention the Viburnum Leaf Beetle.
This is a tiny beetle that totally destroys the leaves on viburnum. I
won't go into much detail because you can read all about it on their
website.
http://www.hort.cornell.edu/vlb
They are trying to get people to participate by telling them where
they saw them and in what stage of development. Already I have talked
to a friend who had all of her viburnum chewed last year, no matter
what species.

Fair Haven Beach State Park (on Lake Ontario in Cayuga County) was open today
(Friday), as suggested in an earlier post. There are restrictions, mostly in
the camping/cabin and bluff areas, which will open before mid May the
attendant told me. The Bay Shore area is also restricted, as they are still
cleaning up many downed branches. Much has been done, one can see. You need
to sign a form when you enter which lists the restricted areas.
The pond was rough on this windy day, but 2 Common Loons were close in and a
Caspian Tern and a Bonaparte's Gull were there also. From West Bay Rd. all 3
mergs (M and F of each), scaup and Bufflehead congregated at the south end.

Subject: Snowy Owl & Southeastern Highlands
From: Gene Huggins <gwren70(AT)AOL.COM>
Date: 18 Apr 2003 8:51pm
On Thursday 17th of April, I looked for the Snowy Owl in the open fields
bordering
the Bray, Timian and Sulphur Springs Rds. on Paris Hill, but with no success.
Ten species of waterfowl were noted. Four Snow Geese were present in
the
same general area where the Snowy Owl has been seen along with approximately
600-700 Canada Geese. Two Green-winged Teal and a Wilson's Snipe were
observed on the farm pond adjacent to the Suphur Springs Rd. in the Twn. of
Paris. Further to the south 11 Green-winged Teal were seen on a farm pond
north of Rt. 20
near Camp Rd. that leads to Oriskany Falls. 19 Common Mergansers were
resting near the north shore of Chittining Pond . Other highlights of the
day
included two Cooper's Hawks and eight Am. Kestrels. An Eastern Meadowlark
was
observed near the Sally Rd. in the Twn. of Marshall.
The DEC Truck Trail system in the Brookfield State Forest remains
largely
impassable due to the recent ice storm.

Subject: Re: Viburnum Leaf Beetles
From: Tim Capone <tcapone(AT)TWCNY.RR.COM>
Date: 18 Apr 2003 8:52pm
Thanks Dorothy for that information on the Viburnum leaf beetles. This is
great, because I'm doing some small tree and large shrub planting this year.
I lost a viburnum last year and it was attacked the year before. I think I
have one left. I wanted to get more, but I don't think that's a good idea
right now.
I'm looking to use trees that grow wild here in central New York, like pin
cherry, black cherry, pussy willows, hawthorn, and dogwoods, whatever. I
don't know where to buy trees like this locally. If anyone knows of a place
that carries small trees or large shrubs like this and has any suggestions
for what is good to plant along this line, I'd appreciate it. I'm looking
to bring privacy to the yard that boarders a street on one side and lines an
apartment building in the back. Small trees and large shrubs are more
manageable than box elders and non-ornamental maples. After the Labor Day
storm of '98, I'm not into the afore mentioned trees.

# 16 - Saturday, April 19, 2003
=20
Derby Hill had 2 days of impressive hawk flights this past week. On =
Saturday, April 12, the total of 1652 raptors included a season high =
1295 TURKEY VULTURES, almost 500 of which came between 2 and 3 PM. =
Other highlights of that day were the 2 SANDHILL CRANES seen from the =
South Lookout just before 2 PM, and a MERLIN that passed very low over =
the North Lookout at 6 PM. On Monday, the count was 1633 raptors, which =
included season high counts of 1006 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 2 MERLINS, and the =
first 12 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS of the season. Yesterday's tally of 1039 =
birds makes 3 days this week with 1000+ birds, with highlights including =
season highs of 16 OSPREY, 8 BALD EAGLES, and 207 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS. =
Some spring arrivals from Derby Hill were a PINE WARBLER on Tuesday, 2 =
CASPIAN TERNS on Wednesday, and 2 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS on Thursday, =
with many other migrants present throughout the week, including GREATER =
YELLOWLEGS, NORTHERN FLICKERS, EASTERN PHOEBES, BARN SWALLOWS, =
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, AMERICAN PIPITS, EASTERN TOWHEES, and EASTERN =
MEADOWLARKS.
The wetlands along Prior Rd and Biddlecum Rd in Schroeppel, Oswego =
County had some good shorebirds this week. On Monday, a SOLITARY =
SANDPIPER was present at Prior Rd, and on Thursday, single SPOTTED and =
LEAST SANDPIPERS were found. Up to 7 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and 2 PECTORAL =
SANDPIPERS were found at the Biddlecum Rd marsh this week, with a =
NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW seen flying with TREE SWALLOWS over the =
marsh on Thursday, and a CASPIAN TERN making an appearance on Friday. =
The Pony Farm on Lamson Rd in Lysander had 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 2 =
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS last Saturday, and 13 WILSON'S SNIPE on Sunday =
evening.
A LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, one of our earliest warblers to return, was =
heard singing along Oran-Gulf Rd in Pompey on Tuesday. On Friday, =
another early warbler, a PINE WARBLER, was seen in the pine plantation =
at the corner of Sixty Rd and Kellogg Rd in Three Rivers WMA. The first =
migrant YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS were reported in a few places on =
Sunday, and AMERICAN BITTERNS were at Peter Scott Swamp on Thursday, and =
along Pine Grove Rd in Selkirk Shores State Park on Friday. Some =
returning sparrows observed this week include the SWAMP SPARROW in =
Georgetown on Tuesday, and VESPER SPARROWS found along Perry Rd in Van =
Buren on Wednesday, along Connors Rd in Van Buren on Thursday, and along =
Parkhurst Rd in Scriba on Friday. In addition, CHIPPING, FIELD,and =
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS are now showing up at area feeders, with at =
least 1 FOX sparrow still lingering at a Georgetown feeder on Thursday.
More than 10 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, most of which were coming into breeding =
plumage, were with HORNED LARKS in a stubble field on the west side of =
Lakeport Rd between Lakeport and Chittenango last weekend. HORNED LARKS =
have also been found along Penoyer Rd in Fabius this week, with at least =
25 AMERICAN PIPITS.
It appears that the SNOWY OWL in Sauquoit has finally left the area. It =
was last seen on Sunday, April 13, and was not seen by several people =
searching for later in the week. At least one LONG-EARED OWL was seen a =
few times this week at Noyes Sanctuary.
In breeding bird news, a pair of COMMON RAVENS have taken over an old =
GOSHAWK nest in Highland Forest, possibly the first confirmed RAVEN nest =
in Onondaga County. Two other active GOSHAWK nests were noted this =
week, one in Highland Forest, and another in DeRuyter State Forest. In =
western Onondaga County, an AMERICAN WOODCOCK was flushed off a nest in =
a woodlot on Tuesday by a resident cleaning up after last week's ice =
storm. The nest contained 3 eggs.

Subject: Woodmans pond field trip
From: Betty Armbruster <barm17(AT)EARTHLINK.NET>
Date: 19 Apr 2003 4:00pm
Four of us showed up at Woodmans pond this morning in the rain. It was
worth it. First thing we saw a Osprey dive in and get a large fish. He
flew about a foot off the water to the other end of the pond.
We later saw two Ospreys in a dead tree. They stayed there for a long time.
Besides the Ospreys we saw;
Common Loon, Horned Grebe, Red-necked grebe, Dbl-cr. cormorant, Tundra swan,
Canada Goose, Wood Duck, Mallard, American Wigeon, Ring-necked Duck,
Oldsquaw (long tail), Bufflehead, Common Merganser, Ruddy duck, Belted
Kingfisher, tons of Tree swallows swarming all over the pond, Yellow-rumped
Warbler, Swamp sparrow, Wh-throated sparrow plus the usual. We then went to
Leland pond where we got to watch a Common Loon in the middle of a school of
fish. The loon would go under the water a little ways and the fish were
jumping out of the water. It looked like the water was boiling. At the
rate he was eating the fish he may have had a hard time flying. We left
before he had finished eating as it was raining hard.

Hey Brenda,
Was the Ibis in the field alone? Was that near the pond in Sangerfield that
I saw the Snow geese on? The pond I saw is to the east of the light now
that I think of it.
Have you seen anything lately? I have not seen any listings of your
sightings.
Hope to hear something great on the list now that I have the time to go find
it.

Subject: Hawk flight prediction for Derby Hill EASTER SUNDAY
From: gphillips <gphillips(AT)A-ZNET.COM>
Date: 19 Apr 2003 10:38pm
Hi,
For those of who are waiting updates to the Derby Hill web site, I =
apologize, I think the server is down, I've been unable to make a =
connection. So I'm posting the prediction for Easter Sunday plus today's =
(4/20) sightings.
PREDICTION FOR; Sunday, April 20th
Partly sunny and warmer. Highs 65 to 75. South winds 10 to 15 mph. We =
shall very likely see plenty of hawks tomorrow. Come early, spend the =
day, looks very promising !=20
It's shaping up to be a nice Easter for Central New York. First we are =
finally starting to lose our grip on the Atlantic moisture that's been =
over us for the past two days. While this is going on, high pressure in =
the upper levels of the atmosphere is strengthening just to our west. =
This upper level high pressure system will move over us later tonight =
and Sunday. Usually when this happens it is usually warm and dry here in =
Central New York. Looking at temperatures to our west Saturday we saw =
lots of 70s and that's the type of air that will be over us Easter =
Sunday.=20
However, we don't think there will be bright sunshine all day. What we =
are watching late Saturday is an area of clouds with an area of =
precipitation over the lower Mississippi Valley. This is forecasted to =
move northeast and although we don't expect any precipitation around =
here we will likely be in and out of clouds during Sunday .
The closest precipitation will come to us Sunday is a line of showers =
and thunderstorms that will line up well east of an approaching cold =
front over the Ohio Valley. Whatever is left of this activity could =
cross Central New York early in the day Monday. We expect a second round =
of showers and thunderstorms later Monday as the actual cold front moves =
closer to us.
Saturday, April 19th
Mostly cloudy and mild. Highs in the lower 60s. Southeast winds 5 to 10 =
mph. It could be excellent for hawk watching, it depends on where the =
BW's are right now. Come if you can !
