I spent a beautiful Easter dawn photographing the glossy ibis on Rt. 20 in
Sangerfield. Thank you, Brenda, for very precise directions. I doubt I
would have seen him if I didn't know he was supposed to be there.
In fact, the first time I didn't see him because he was in with Canada geese
and mallards. For such a diddly little puddle of water, there was quite a
bit of activitiy. While I was photographing the ibis, a pair of wood ducks
swam into my field of view. That is the first time I've had that combination
in a picture! The ibis was finding great big juicy earthworms, so perhaps
he'll stay around for a while. He was still there when I left at 7:40.
Also at this location was a killdeer and a pair of red-tailed hawks being
chased by crows. I heard a pileated woodpecker and turkeys in the woods.
Also, there were lots of deer in the area. Altogether a very pleasant way to
start the day.

From: Jody Hildreth <jody(AT)KIDWINGS.COM>
Date: 20 Apr 2003 1:09pm
Hello All,
Just got back from Jekyll Island early this Easter morning at 1:30 am. I
read the post about the Glossy Ibis which is just 2 miles from my house
(great directions Brenda!). I did find it at 11:30 in the same location and
was able to get some digiscoped pictures of it. I will post them to my web
site after I go through the more than 600 pictures I took on my vacation
(no, they weren't all of birds - many family pictures on the beach).
I did have a great trip and managed to see 2 out of my targeted 6 species:
Painted Bunting and Red-cockaded Woodpecker. The woodpecker was seen in
Okeefenokee Swamp. The birds on Jekyll Island were great. Nesting Wood
Storks, Snowy Egrets displaying, Anhinga, Roseate Spoonbill, one lone
Sandhill Crane, and many more. It will take me a week or two to get the
pictures posted to my site.
Glad to be back in New York - and I am glad to hear the Snowy Owl was seen
for a few more days after I left. Good birding to you all.

There was a lone male eastern towhee in the VERY small wooded strip next to
my apartment this morning. He was somehow managing to find forage despite
the cramped quarters and scattered trash of college students gone by. Guess
it goes to show how even a tiny habitat in the midst of urban development
can help.

SHINNED HAWK.
Stony Pond: 1 BROAD-WINGED HAWK (this is a nest location for broad-
wings), 1 OSPREY(might be a nest location).
Smith Rd. Ponds: 1 OSPREY and a nest that's either an OSPREY OR RED-TAIL--
bird on nest with white head, but I didn't have a scope.
Tuscarora Lake: 2 BUFFLEHEADS and a RIVER OTTER--pretty cool!
Tioghnioga WMA: The nest in question from last week's post is still a RED-
TAIL-HAWK nest.
I might be off line for a few days until I get my Fort Drum hook-up set
up. If anyone can't geta hold of me just give me a few days and I should
be able to get back to you by the end of the week.

From: gphillips <gphillips(AT)A-ZNET.COM>
Date: 20 Apr 2003 8:45pm
The server to DerbyHill Bird Observatory is down, so I'll post to the =
list again.
PREDICTION FOR; Monday, April 21st
Showers and thunderstorms likely. Highs 65 to 70. South winds 10 to 20 =
mph. Chance of rain 70 percent.=20
CONDITIONS ARE STILL FAVORABLE FOR A VERY DECENT FLIGHT OF HAWKS AHEAD =
OF THE FRONT/RAIN (below) !!=20
A line of showers and thunderstorms has flared in Michigan and the Ohio =
Valley. This is occurring ahead of a cold front. These storms will tend =
to weaken as they move east, but they may bring us a few showers early =
on Monday. A second line of showers and thunderstorms will tend to =
develop along that front during Monday afternoon, and these will bring a =
better chance for showers and thunderstorms, especially from mid =
afternoon on. The air behind this front is cool, but not cold. In fact, =
somewhat drier air behind it may allow for a brief window of sun early =
Tuesday morning, before a second cold front nears with more showers for =
Tuesday afternoon.
Sunday, April 20th
AN OUTSTANDING DAY FOR RAPTOR WATCHING! Partly sunny and warmer. Highs =
65 to 75. South winds 10 to 20mph (gust 32mph). Many BW's low overhead =
in the morning. The SWAINSON'S HAWK came during the 3-4pm hour, was =
distant over the lake but it lingered/circled several times before =
cutting the corner.

Date: 20 Apr 2003 9:47pm
I went to my in-laws' house in Chenango County for the weekend,
and used that as a base for birding mostly in Cortland County, but
also in southern Onondaga County. (I was working on county lists
for those 2 counties.)
Highlights:
A calling BARRED OWL in the state forest along Herliny Road southeast
of Apulia.
Two BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, apparently on territory, calling and
flying low over the woods on Baker School House Road, town of Solon,
southeast of Cortland.
A winnowing COMMON SNIPE near the town of Willet, southern
Cortland County.
Warblers: 2 YELLOW-RUMPED, one BLACK-THROATED GREEN,
and one LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, all singing, all possibly on
territory.
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS in several locations.
A singing BLUE-HEADED VIREO in southern Cortland County.
BROWN CREEPERS and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS in
a number of locations.

You may want to try White Oak Nursery out of Canandiagua.

I have no affiliation with them. I just received a mailing from them in the

Subject: Bald Eagle - Utica Marsh
From: Jody Hildreth <jody(AT)KIDWINGS.COM>
Date: 21 Apr 2003 11:29am
Hello All,
This morning I took my four year old daughter to the Utica Marsh. While
walking down the main trail to the observation platform I found an immature
Bald Eagle soaring low over the east end of the marsh. It continued
circling and drifting our way until it flew right over us and continued to
follow the canal west.
That was our best find at the marsh. We did see a few Wood Ducks, Hooded
Mergansers, and the usual Mallards and Canada Goose.

Hi everyone,
The Glossy ibis was still present at the Rt. 20 locality in Sangerfield
at 5:30 p.m. today (Monday 21). It was easy to find as it was the only
bird in the small pond.
Good birding,
Brian

Subject: ruffed grouse/snow goose/bald eagles
From: Brian White <bwhite(AT)EMAIL.SMITH.EDU>
Date: 21 Apr 2003 6:24pm
I tried to send this last week, but my connection to the list had
lapsed, so here is another try
Hi everyone,
I have been awake frequently at night these past couple of weeks due to
an unpleasant viral attack first on my wife and now on me. An unexpected
benefit of this is that I can answer Matt's question about Ruffed grouse
night-time drumming. As the house is close to a Ruffed grouse drumming
log in the Colgate woods, I can attest that a grouse has been drumming
every 2 or 3 minutes all night long. The drumming continues for two or
three hours after dawn but then subsides. This grouse, at least, drums
much more at night than during the day. While on the subject of Ruffed
grouse, I have a couple of other observations/questions. The nearby
grouse drums extensively in the Fall - October/November. I am curious
why. Do they set up winter territories? This leads to my next
observation and question. I have spent a fair amount of time snowshoeing
in the nearby woods during this winter. From Jan. to near the end of
March, I could find no sign of Ruffed grouse, no tracks, nothing. Then
about the end of March there were tracks everywhere, I saw a couple and
the drumming began. So I am curious about what do Ruffed grouse do
during the winter? Do they migrate to other areas?
On a totally different topic,on 10 April there were approximately 1500
Snow geese on Woodman Pond. One of them had a yellow neck band with JA95
written on it. Anyone know anything about this?
Finally, last Wednesday I was hawk-watching on Goat Peak in
Massachusetts when I saw two immature Bald eagles doing complex
aerobatics in close contact and coordination. They appeared to be about
the same age from their patchy plumage and it made me wonder if siblings
stay together after they have left their parents.
Sorry this is long, but I would welcome any comments or enlightenment on
any of these topics.
Thanks.
Brian

Brenda has done a good job of posting the Derby Hill raptor totals. Thanks.
I looked at the Derby Hill sight this morning http://www.derbyhill.org
There were 3780 Broadwings on Monday, 4/21. Total hawks was 4187.
That brings the spring total up to 991,345, or 8655 short of
the millionth hawk counted in the years that totals have been kept.
Go to the website and find out about the raffle for the raptor that
becomes the millionth, as recorded by the official observer, Gerard
Phillips. There are some great prizes. 3 more days of good broadwing
flights should take us over the top. So don't delay getting your
guess in.

picnic on the 18th at Derby Hill.
This year there will be two raffles. One for sponsors and one for
participants that raise $5 or more. There will also be prizes for the top
three individual fundraisers. All money raised goes to support Derby Hill
Bird Observatory and Onondaga Audubon Society education efforts.

Greetings! Jody I was impressed with your photo of an EASTERN TOWHEE.
The male in this shot clearly shows a gold iris. I have never seen
any pigmentation other than red for the color of a Towhee's eyes. So, I
went to the books and learned that the further south one travels, the
eye color of a Towhee changes. In Florida, according to the NatGeo
guide, the iris can be pure white. WOW! I wonder why a change in
latitude would favor determination of the pigment of one's eye? I guess
the populations obviously don't interbreed much... Thanks for sparking
my curiosity!!

I thought it was very nicely done. It gave an awareness of hawk migration,
showed one or two good shots, and Gerard handled the humor well. If it had

To all my TV Fans !
It's not easy doing a TV segment, on location one never knows when/if the
camera make-up will get in your eye...
Seriously, we only had about 20 minutes notice that Mike Price was on his
way to Derby. He called my house on his cel phone (I was of course at Derby)
and had I been able to contact him I would definitely have told him NOT to
come! He could not have picked worse weather conditions for hawks than
yesterday (or today) and anything would have been better !
I was rather nervous doing the shoot and although we talked about the
millionth raptor weekend events (April 26th/27th and May 3rd/4th)and raffle
and art competition off camera, I forgot to give them a plug on camera, argh
!!!
Mike (baby)also said that he would put the Derby website up on the screen
which I think he forgot. But overall, I felt he/we gave Derby Hill and the
Millionth Raptor a fair, first-time, TV exposure (in spite of the miserable
weather conditions!).
Least anyone needs reminding, the millionth raptor is well within sight,
just 8,655 birds to go...it's all happening so fast, we still need to sell
more millionth raptor raffle tickets to break even and hopefully have more
participants put their artistic talents to use in the raptor art
competition. If you know any talented kid(s) and/or adult(s)please encourage
them to submit a piece !!!
(Hey Jody, any of your kids good at drawing birds !! ??).
Details on events/raffle etc can be found at www.DerbyHill.org as well as
the usual daily updates/predictions on the hawk flights.
I will be signing autographs at Derby Hill on April 26th/27th, but please,
no camping outside the cottage over night. Thank you !

Judy, Sarah, All -
This afternoon Ibis was in the pool of water described precisely in
Brenda's post.
Around 1:10 pm he flew north out of sight.
Good luck - it's quite a beautiful sight worth the endeavor!

# 17 - Thursday, April 24, 2003
=20
A SWAINSON'S HAWK and the return of the BROAD-WINGED HAWKS are the =
highlights of the week at Derby Hill, where the Hawkwatch is rapidly =
approaching its One Millionth Raptor counted. The strong surge of warm =
air and south winds last weekend brought thousands of BROAD-WINGED HAWKS =
past the hawkwatch, with a high of 4384 on Sunday and another 3780 on =
Monday. The light-morph SWAINSON'S HAWK appeared late in the afternoon =
on Sunday, circling a few times over the lake before continuing on. =
Other individual species counts include 29 OSPREY and 20 BALD EAGLES on =
Sunday, and a season high 3 MERLINS on Monday. As the cold front =
arrived late in the day on Monday, it brought with it 3286 raptors in =
the 4 PM hour. The Hawkwatch is now less than 9000 birds away from the =
One Million mark, and there are events scheduled to celebrate this =
achievement over the weekends of April 26/27 and May 3/4.
Highlights of the non-raptor migration at Derby Hill from Saturday =
include a dozen COMMON LOONS, a GREATER YELLOWLEGS, GOLDEN- and =
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, 2 lingering TREE SPARROWS, and a FIELD SPARROW. =
Sunday saw the arrival of BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, CLIFF SWALLOW and BANK =
SWALLOW, plus a COMMON RAVEN, many BARN SWALLOWS and 9 YELLOW-RUMPED =
WARBLERS. Monday's arrivals included PURPLE MARTINS, HOUSE WREN, BROWN =
THRASHER and a PALM WARBLER, while other sightings included more BARN =
SWALLOWS, a BANK SWALLOW, over 50 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and 3 PINE =
WARBLERS, as well as EASTERN TOWHEE, WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS and a few =
PURPLE FINCHES.
A single GLOSSY IBIS in breeding plumage was found along Rt 20 in =
Sangerfield, Oneida County on Saturday afternoon. The bird was in a =
pool of water in a field of corn stubble on the south side of the road =
1.1 miles west of the intersection of Rts 12 and 20. The bird was still =
there as of Tuesday afternoon.
=20
Three pairs of WOOD DUCKS and a HERMIT THRUSH were seen at Whiskey =
Hollow in Van Buren on Friday, and the first WINTER WREN of the season =
was seen near the outlet of Beaver Lake on Saturday. A BLACK-THROATED =
GREEN WARBLER and a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER were found in Georgetown on =
Sunday. Also on Sunday, some migrants noted at Noyes Sanctuary were =
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and PINE WARBLER.
On Wednesday, 2 UPLAND SANDPIPERS were at the airport in Fulton, and a =
VIRGINIA RAIL was heard at Peter Scott Swamp. On Saturday, 8 RED-NECKED =
GREBES in breeding plumage were seen on Oneida Lake from the boat launch =
at Oneida Shores Park in Cicero. An interesting sighting last Friday =
afternoon involved approximately 600 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS that were =
seen flying west over the Seneca River in Baldwinsville.
On April 26/27 and May 3/4, events are scheduled at Derby Hill to =
celebrate the One Millionth Raptor counted at the Hawkwatch. Visit the =
OAS web page above for more information.
=20
On May 3 and 4, the Lake Ontario Bird Festival will be held at the Yogi =
Bear Jellystone Park Camp-Resort in Mexico. There will be shows and =
exhibits and field trips and other activities tied in with the bird =
migration occurring along the Lake Ontario shoreline. The Campground is =
located on Co Rt 16 just south of Rt 104B in the town of Mexico.
On May 3 and 4, the Spring Migration Nature Art Festival will be held at =
the Great Swamp Conservancy in Canastota. Nationally acclaimed artists =
will display their art and skills, and there will be guided trail and =
boardwalk tours. The Great Swamp Conservancy is located at the corner =
of Pine Ridge Rd and North Main Street in the town of Lenox, Madison =
County.

While coming back from looking for the Common

from Muller rd. in the Southern Highlands
(DeRuyter/Georgetown area); Anne P. and I came across
a small flock of Black-capped Chickadees which had
several Yellow-rumped Warblers, Golden-crowned
Kinglets, Brown Creepers and our first BLUE-HEADED
VIREO of the year. Other notable birds of the day
included Common Snipe, Purple Finch, Chipping Sparrow
and Red-breasted Nuthatch. Not a bad hour or so of
birding. Time to listen for some Woodcocks. Cheers!
