American Tree Sparrow
Chipping Sparrow
Field Sparrow
White-crowned Sparrow
Snow Bunting
Rusty Blackbird
Purple Finch
Common Redpoll
Pine Siskin
Evening Grosbeak
Another change in the mix for birders in Hamilton this week. The big find
of the week were two CATTLE EGRETS just west of Peter's Corners at the
intersection of Woodfield Road and Hwy 5. These birds, discovered on
Saturday were last reported on Tuesday but may still be in the area. They
were seen at the Yellow Briar Farm on the northeast corner of Hwy 5 and
Woodfield but also across Hwy 5 at the horse farm. Any reports this weekend
would be greatly appreciated. Nearby at Peter's Corner Hwy 5 & Hwy 8) three
Snow Geese were seen last Saturday.
Other migrants reported this week include the continuation of the exodus of
winter finches from the north. This week Evening Grosbeaks were reported in
the Flamborough area at feeder, flying over the Dundas area and as flyovers
at Woodland Cemetery. Purple Finches were also seen last weekend over
Woodland. Common Redpolls have been reported from Fifty Point Conservation
Area and in North Halton and Pine Siskins are still being seen at feeders
throughout the area. In Ruthven, at the banding station a nice mix of
winter finches including Evening Grosbeak, Pine Siskins and Purple Finches
were seen yesterday.
Along the lakeshore this week, an increase in the number of waterfowl and
particularly scoters has been noted. Our CommonxBarrow's Goldeneye hybrid
is back in the area being seen at Sayer's Park on Wednesday. White-winged,
Surf and Black Scoters are also numerous in the area with the number of Surf
Scoters being at a potential record high for the Hamilton Study Area. Other
ducks seen out at various viewing points on the lake include, Long-tailed
Duck, Greater Scaup, Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead and Red-breasted
Merganser. A few interesting gulls have been seen including Lesser
Black-backed Gull seen at Van Wagners Beach and another seen along with a
Thayer's Gull at Winona Road. Great Black-backed Gulls seem to be on the
increase as well.
At LaSalle Marina yesterday waterfowl included Redhead, Ring-necked Duck,
Greater Scaup, Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser and Ruddy Duck. American Coots
are increasing in numbers here and along the trail many Golden-crowned
Kinglets were crawling through the trees. An Osprey also was seen yesterday
Woodland Cemetery, a traditional spot for hawk migration in the Hamilton
Area, did not disappoint this week. Last Sunday a push of Turkey Vultures,
Red-tailed, Red-shouldered, Coopers and Sharp-shinned Hawks, Northern
Goshawk, Merlin and a stunning low fly-over of Golden Eagle were the
highlights. Other migrants beside the winter finches listed above include
Red-throated Loon, Northern Shrike, Eastern Bluebird and Rusty Blackbird. A
Tundra Swan was seen out on the bay from here.
At Bronte Harbour yesterday, a female Harlequin Duck was seen at Bronte
Bluffs Park. Two late Blackpoll Warblers were seen at Petro Canada Pier and
Chipping, White-crowned and Field Sparrows were seen at Bronte Marsh.
In the odds & ends this week, Northern Shrike and American Tree Sparrow were
seen at Courtcliffe Park. A Peregrine Falcon flew past Canada Centre for
Inland Waters and flocks of Snow Buntings were reported from Fifty Point
Conservation Area (brrr!!!).
*NOTE* This Sunday, November 4th is the Hamilton Fall Bird Count. Anyone
birding in the area on Sunday is asked to report their sightings via email
to me or phone the hotline. We are hoping to dig up another rarity for
birders to come and see.
Have a great weekend!

Subject: [Ontbirds]Kingston area birds to Nov. 2, 2007
From: "Peter and Jane Good" <goodcompany(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 2 Nov 2007 6:20am
The Eurasian Wigeon remains at Elevator Bay but the hybrid American/Eurasian
has not been seen since first reported last Monday. A single Brant is
lingering on the east end of Amherst Island and among the many other
waterfowl at that location were 15 Redheads and 10 Black Scoters on Sunday.
There were 2 Mute Swans in Elevator Bay on Monday and a single Ruddy Duck.
Ruddy Ducks were also reported from Hay Bay and Amherst Island.
Hawk sightings included 3 Rough-legged on Wolfe Island on Sunday and another
near Odessa yesterday. Two N. Goshawks were reported; one on Wolfe last
Sunday and another on Amherst on Monday. There was also a Red-shouldered
Hawk on Amherst that same day. Owl numbers are not yet spectacular (only
Saw-whet and Long-eared mentioned) and we have not had a Snowy to date.
Their average arrival is Nov. 5th but they have been here as early as Oct.
11th.
Shorebird numbers continue to drop, as expected, but five species;
Black-bellied Plover, Semipalmated Plover, Greater Yellowlegs, Dunlin, and
Am. Woodcock were reported.
Winter finches continue to move through. Pine Siskin numbers vary from day
to day at local feeders and the feeder at Camden East had 2 more Evening
Grosbeaks last Saturday but none all week. Common Redpolls are trickling
southwards; 4 on Amherst on Monday and another 2 yesterday. A singleton
visited a feeder out Montreal Street on Monday. A Pine Grosbeak on Amherst
yesterday was a welcome sight as there were none around at all last winter.
Sixty Snow Buntings on Amherst last Monday was a taste of things to come but
a late Blackpoll Warbler in the same location yesterday must have been a bit
of a surprise.
Cheers,
Peter Good

As a result of the early morning coffee not kicking in when I started typing
today, I put Woodfield Road instead of
Woodhill Road.
The Cattle Egrets were last reported Tuesday at the intersection of Woodhill
Road and Hwy 5 west of Peters Corners.
Sorry for the confusion

Subject: [Ontbirds]Western Tanager at Long Point
From: "Diane Salter" <dianesalter(AT)execulink.com>
Date: 2 Nov 2007 2:44pm
This morning there was a Western Tanager in the woodlot of the LPBO at Old Cut.
The bird was seen fleetingly at 9:15 and then refound again around 10:30. It
was seen by myself, Fergus Nicoll & 2 banders. Despite repeated searching it
could not be found again. It may hang around this area as it was seen eating
the wild grapes at the top of the trees.
The Long Point Bird Observatory is located on Old Cut Blvd. Follow Highway 59
south to Long Point & continue east along the lake front til you reach Old Cut
Blvd. Turn left on Old Cut & the LPBO is located on the right hand side (about
5 houses) & is well marked.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Pacific Loon: L. Ontario off Second Marsh, Oshawa
From: "Dave Worthington" <worth(AT)pathcom.com>
Date: 2 Nov 2007 3:23pm
This morning at 10:30 I found a Pacific Loon amongst the 150+ Common Loons
on Lake Ontario off Second Marsh. I was standing on the beach on the eastern
side of Second Marsh where it comes out from taking the Cool Hollow Trail.
The bird was smaller than the nearby COLO, it had a dark smaller pointed
bill that was held level. It had a grey rounded head and a noticeable chin
stap. Some of the mantle feathers showed light fringing to them so I’m
assuming it is a 1st winter bird.

Directions; Take the Harmony Rd. exit off of the 401 in Oshawa and go south.
Turn left on Samuel McLaughlin Rd and drive around to the GM headquarters
parking lot. From here take the trail named Cool Hollow down to the lake.
The bird was in the bay and could be viewed from the beach.

Subject: [Ontbirds] Humber Bay East --- Blue Gray Gnatcatcher,
Yellow-rumped warbler et al
From: Gene Denzel <lezned(AT)yorku.ca>
Date: 2 Nov 2007 5:03pm
It being an incredibly beautiful day for 2 November, we braved the
427 traffic down to Humber Bay East, where we were greeted by a
NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD near the parking lot, and at last 30 BUFFLEHEAD
in the bay just NOrth of the lot. Visible in the distance were a
couple of GREBES (apparently Red-necked, but too brief glimpses to be
certain), and one closer HORNED GREBE.. In the mostly enclosed bay
there were 2 AMERICAN WIDGEONS, 1 AMERICAN COOT, and 1 NORTHERN
SHOVELER. There were many hundreds of LONG-TAILED DUCKS scattered
around, including one with unusually bright buffy chest colouring.
There were at least 5 HOODED MERGANSERS. A mixed flock of passerines
included 1 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, 1 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, and 2-3
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS. We saw a couple of RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS,
and a group of 5 COMMON MERGANSERS, and had brief glimpses of what
appeared to be a COMMON LOON, unfortunately starting far away and
moving further as it dove and resurfaced. In the mudflats on the
South side of the park there were at least 16 KILDEER, and 5 GREEN-
WINGED TEAL. Heading back North to the parking lot, there were at
least 2 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS, moving through the shrubbery along
the shoreline.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Heads Up for Tundra Swans with blue neck collars
from Alaska breeding sites
From: Mark Cranford <mark.cranford(AT)ofo.ca>
Date: 2 Nov 2007 6:53pm
Tundra Swans were marked in western and northern Alaska in the summer of
2006 with coded neck bands as part of an effort to learn more about the
timing of migration and movements relative to breeding area.
Neck bands have a four-digit code that begins with a letter, and are
read from bottom to top. Bands are blue with white digits, except codes
T3##. which are white with black digits..

Weather:
Conditions overhead were very much similar as the day previous with the
exception of the wind direction. There was little or no wind until late
morning after which winds were light to moderate varying from
south-southwest to south-southeast.
Raptor Observations:
The flight today began much earlier than yesterday with a much steadier and
consistent movement throughout the day. Much of the migration was somewhat
to the north but stayed at a manageable distance rather than getting blown
entirely out of view. There were plenty of birds overhead as well to keep
everyone interested. The breakdown was similar to yesterday also but with
less vultures and more Red-shoulders represented in the overall count.
Among the many Red-tails seen today was an adult rufous morph that flew
more or less overhead, giving a great view.
Non-raptor Observations:
