Subject: [Ontbirds]re finch movement at Apsley
From: Kingdonbaker(AT)aol.com
Date: 3 Nov 2007 9:51am
Birders,
At my feeder on Chandos Lake (6 km east of Apsley which is 40 km south
of Bancroft) within the week a number of finches have turned up. I suspect
they will keep going since there is little feed for them here. A large flock
of Evening Grosbeaks turned up and yesterday I had Siskins and Redpoles. I
have Purple finches all summer but only a couple of females are left.
Goldfinches are numerous. The highlight was a pair of Pine Grosbeaks this
morning
(the bird on the 1000 dollar bill) I suspect they will turn up farther south.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Pacific Loon off Oshawa Second Marsh November 3
From: "M. Bain" <mjcbain(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 3 Nov 2007 9:20am
This morning, November 3rd, Richard Pope, Jim Fairchild and I had good looks
at the Pacific Loon off Oshawa Second Marsh found by Dave Worthington
yesterday. It was about 250m offshore in calm water and for over half an
hour from about 9-9.30am it loafed on the surface, mostly by itself, but
with Common Loons passing by allowing close comparison. Later it started
actively diving and feeding and became more difficult to pick out from the
other loons. The smaller size, the smaller, straight bill, the grayer,
rounded head and the sharp demarcation between the white and dark of the
neck were all noted, but we did not get a good view of a chinstrap although
at times we thought we could see one.
The lake was very busy, with many Red-breasted Mergansers, gulls, and all
three scoters as well as about 200 loons.
Directions:
Take the Harmony Rd. exit off the 401 in Oshawa, Exit 419, and go south on
Farewell St. to turn left on Colonel Sam Drive.
Drive east to the first GM headquarters parking lot and take the Cool Hollow
trail down to the lake.
The bird was viewed from the beach, slightly east of where the Cool Hollow
Trail gets to the shore.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Evening & Pine Grosbeaks, etc. - York Region
From: RON FLEMING <flemingron(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 3 Nov 2007 12:36pm
Over the past two weeks Evening Grosbeaks have continued to visit Lorena
Campbell's feeders in Willow Beach, which is located just west of Jackson's
Point on the south shore of Lake Simcoe. My timing for these grosbeaks was off
today (had to settle for Pine Siskins) but I did happen upon three female Pine
Grosbeaks several kms south of this location. The latter grosbeaks were perched
in a tree on the west side of Kennedy Road, about a km south of Baseline Road,
south of green sign #26121. Between this location and Metro Road I stopped to
watch a flock of 49 Wild Turkeys foraging in a field on the west side of
Kennedy, roughly across from the fenced off hydro station at green sign #26505.
Three of the turkeys were feeding in a tangle of wild grapes, up in the vines.
A hunter in full camo was perched in a high seat at the edge of the woodlot,
apparently as put off by my presence as I was at his.
Both Willow Beach and Franklin Beach held numerous waterfowl - mainly Canada
Geese -but I counted 33 Common Loons and 11 Horned Grebes during several stops.
On the way back to Newmarket I checked out the Holland Landing area. There
was one male Hooded Merganser spicing up the otherwise monotonous ranks of
Canada Geese at Soldier's Bay (north side of Queensville Sdrd.) and, at the
northern terminus of Bathurst Street (green sign #21535) a female Merlin was
intently watching a field full of Snow Buntings (approx. 300 birds).
Ron Fleming, Newmarket
York Region is between Toronto and Barrie, running south from the southern
shoreline of Lake Simcoe.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Leslie Street Sp;it - Eagle to Gnatcatchers.
From: "Norman Murr" <normurr(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 3 Nov 2007 3:21pm
Good evening
Today Ian Cannell, Ed O'Conner and I once again took a long walk on The Spit
and again it was a beautiful day out there. Not to many people and light winds
all day.
Some of our 57 species of birds besides a low flying ( 200 feet up ), almost
over our heads juvenile Golden Eagle and 3 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers were Common
Loons, Brant, N. Shovelers, A. Wigeons, Ring-necked Duck, all 3 Mergansers in
numbers, N. Goshawk, Peregrine Falcon, A. Coots, 3 L. Golden Plovers, A.
Woodcock, 8 or 9 Hairy Woodpeckers, Brown Creepers, both Kinglets, Cedar
Waxwings, Yellow-rumped Warblers, A. Tree Sparrows, Snow Buntings and Pine
Siskins and to end the day for me we had a Peregrine Falcon just over the car as
we pulled into my drive way up here.
A good day with some good birds and the company was as usual, better than
good.
Directions:-
LESLIE STREET SPIT (TOMMY THOMPSON PARK) IN TORONTO
To get to "The Spit" from Queen and Yonge Streets. Take the Queen Street Car
#501 east to Leslie St. and walk south (about 2 km) or as far as you can go on
Leslie St. at Unwin Ave. and you will see the gate and signage. You may also
catch the Jones Bus #83 at the Donlands Subway Station or transfer to it at
Queen St. and Jones Ave. and take it to Leslie St. And Commissioner St. (on
Saturday only). By automobile you may drive to Lakeshore Blvd and Leslie St.
then south to The Spit.
You can park either on Leslie St. or Unwin Ave. You may also park in the parking
lot inside the main gate after 9 am. Be sure to observe the parking lot closing
time as if you are not out by then your auto will be locked in until the
following day. — THE PARKING LOT AND ALL GATES WILL BE LOCKED AT 4:30 pm and
there is no Van in the winter.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE:- The official hours for The Spit are 9 am to 4:30 pm (weekends and
holidays only of course) but the unofficial hours are sunup to sundown. To date
no one has questioned any birder, jogger, cyclist, etc. about the use of The
Spit from sunup to sundown.
The spit is only open on the weekends and on holidays, at other times you will
not be able to access the area. This area is extensive, 7 km to the tip, but be
prepared to walk more than that. The Spit is only open on the weekends and
holidays because they are still building it.

Subject: [Ontbirds] NO Pacific Loon @ Oshawa Second Marsh/Darlington
P.P. - but seen in afternoon by others!
From: Andrew Keaveney <uofgtwitcher(AT)msn.com>
Date: 3 Nov 2007 3:32pm
Hello birders. I had the chance to check for the Pacific Loon this afternoon
after a trip to the Toronto Zoo with our university wildlifeclub. I thought I'd
get lucky using only my binoculars (I do not own a scope at this time I'm
afraid) but it was not to be so. I did meet a gentleman (John something)
walking up the beach with his wife that said he'd seen the bird not far offshore
(less than 200m?) just minutes before we met up so I launched like a rocket in
that direction. I spent the next 2 hrs. looking through all the close to shore
Common Loons only to find... Common Loons, hahaha. So I don't know where the
prize bird was but I definately looked at a LOT OF LOONS!
For birders with scopes I would DEFINATELY go to try it tomorrow. The guy I met
said he'd seen it off the beach almost at where it meets with Darlington
Provincial Park although the loons were moving west again as night fell.
Directions: Please see previous 2 posts for detailed directions.
Cheers,
Andrew Keaveney

Subject: [Ontbirds]Grand Bend OFO Field Trip - Sunday Nov 4
From: Maris Apse <apsemaris(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 3 Nov 2007 4:39pm
Hi all,
We meet at 8:30 am EST at Sobey's - remember to put your clock back 1 hour
to-night. I did a bit of scouting to-day as part of a Lambton Wildlife trip,
which started at Point Edward ~8:00 am and ended ~3:00 at Ipperwash. Some good
birds were seen - Snow Buntings (3 flocks -largest ~80 included 2/3 Longspur
sp.), American Pipit, Cedar and Bohemian Waxwing, Short-eared Owl, Dunlin,
Northern Shrike, a good variety of waterfowl, both 'late' and early' - 3 Falcon
species. Friday I saw just 1 adult Red-headed Woodpecker in Pinery P.P.
To-morrow will likely bring cooler temps. with westerly winds so layering
and gloves for the morning are a good idea.
Cheers! Maris

Subject: [Ontbirds]Evening Grosbeaks
From: "Alicia King" <aking(AT)abcbirds.org>
Date: 3 Nov 2007 6:10pm
My husband and I birded some of the water areas near Coldwater, Waubaushene
and Port McNicoll on Saturday. We counted about 160 Trumpeter Swans, three
Great Blue Herons, a dozen Common Mergansers, and about a dozen Common
Goldeneyes, some mallards and several dozen Canada Goose. There were other
birds, some far out in the bay that we didn't see well enough to name for
sure.
Before we left our home (Waubaushene, ON) to bird we were treated to about a
dozen Evening Grosbeaks at our feeders (these in addition to the daily
visits of Red-breasted and White-breasted nuthatches, Hairy and Downy
woodpeckers, a pair of cardinals, goldfinches, juncos and the occasional
dove.)

Weather:
Sunny conditions prevailed again today after quite a bit of cloud cover
early in the day. Winds were light to moderate throughout the day and
generally from the west although upper level winds appeared to be more out
the southwest.
Raptor Observations:
There was very little movement until the afternoon today after which there
was quite a decent flight if somewhat modest compared to the last couple of
days. Another nice Golden Eagle passage was seen, much to the watching
gang’s appreciation, and included a group of three and another two flying
in tandem. Two more dark morph Red-tails were also noted.
Non-raptor Observations:
In my early morning walk today I discovered a leucistic Robin, which was
fairly typical in plumage below and on the head but the back, wings and
tail were a pale coffee color. While albinism is quite common in Robins, I
believe this is the first I’ve seen with this coloration.
