Subject: [Ontbirds]Western Tanager at Long Point
From: "Ron Ridout" <rridout(AT)bsc-eoc.org>
Date: 4 Nov 2007 3:30pm
The female Western Tanager was seen again this morning at the Old Cut
Field Station on Long Point. The bird was frequenting the pines behind
the banding lab for a couple of hours. Most of the time it fed on grapes
high in the treetops but once or twice it dropped to the ground in the
vicinity of the feeders behind the lab though it was hard to see what it
was feeding on there.
>From the photos I obtained, it appears to be what Sibley refers to as a
pale female. The bird seems quite healthy and it could remain in the
area for a few days since there are plenty of grapes for it to eat.
Finding it requires a lot of patience watching the thick pinetops for
movement as the bird moves from one tree to the next.

Subject: [Ontbirds] Barred Owl and Theft - Thickson Woods
From: "Tim" <tmnelson(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 4 Nov 2007 2:58pm
On Friday - Nov. 2 - around 4:15 we went to Thickson Woods to try and spot the
Great Horned Owl. Although we didn't see him we did spot a Barred Owl and got
some nice photos.
Unfortunately, while we were viewing the Barred Owl someone broke my car window
and stole a Lowepro Bag containing a lens, teleconverter, photobank, some SD
cards etc. I was pretty foolish to leave my bag in full view - and have paid for
it. Just thought I'd warn any other birders that park next to the woods, not to
make the same mistake.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Pacific Loon
From: DB <burtonian(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 4 Nov 2007 5:21pm
Although the 100's of loons previously reported have vanished, it seems
the best one is still there, which I saw from the pier at the foot of
Simcoe Street while looking toward the bay to the east about 2:15 this
afternoon.
I had been asked my opinion by another birder (who then left), but was
uncertain for a long time, until the bird struck a more alert posture,
making the chin strap obvious. I then changed to a higher magnification
40x eyepiece. The bird seemed darker and smaller than adjacent loons and
sat lower in the water. The feathering to the front and rear of the eye
was quite dark, giving the impression of a black line through the eye,
since it was darker than the top of the head. The feathering at the base
of the bill on the lower half of the face has not turned entirely white
yet. The bill was dark, and as had been mentioned by the other birder
[sorry I don't know your name], both the body and the bill were
definitely smaller than the other loons.
Directions: Take Simcoe exit in Oshawa from the 401 and go south to
where it ends at the lake. Park in the parking lot. The pier can be seen
from there.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Sandhill Cranes, Just - Ottawa East
From: "Peter Campbell" <pagcampbell(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 4 Nov 2007 5:38pm
Hi Ontbirders,
This afternoon, 4 Nov, Debbie Campbell and I went to Milton Road to look for
Sandhill Cranes. Between 2 PM and 2:30 we searched the length of Milton,
including looking south from Smith Road and saw nothing, noting that just a
few days ago the cranes numbered over 70. About 2:30 we stopped on Perreault
Road at Milton and got out for a scan. Just then, three cranes flew over us
from the east and landed in the cornfield directly opposite the end of
Perreault. They were only a few hundred yards off Milton and gave the
closest viewing I have ever had of Sandhill Cranes on Milton Road - Perhaps
the family group of two adults and a juvenile previously reported. They were
still in the cornfield at 4PM when we returned to check.
Happy Birding,
Peter Campbell
Ottawa, Ontario
Location courtesy of NeilyWorld:
"From Highway 417 (The Queensway) take exit 96 (Boundary Road). Proceed 2.0
km NNW on Boundary Road to Russell Road (Regional 26). Turn right or ESE
onto Russell and drive 3.5 km to Milton Road (Regional 31). Turn left or NNW
on Milton." Or from the other end, take Innes Road east from exit 112 (The
Queensway) around the Blackburn Hamlet bypass, turn right on Navan Road just
at the end of the bypass and at Navan turn right on Milton Road

Subject: [Ontbirds]Kingston Area birds
From: "Bruce Di Labio" <bruce.dilabio(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 4 Nov 2007 3:29pm
Hi Everyone,
I birded Amherst Island this weekend November 3 and 4. Highlights in the
Owl Woods were 6 Long-eared Owls on Saturday and 2 Barred Owls on Sunday. At
the east end of the island (KFN property) Sunday I was surprised to find a
late Red Knot and Ruddy Turnstone. The lone Brant was present on both
days. The viewing conditions were excellent over Lake Ontario Sunday and I
tallied 316 Common Loon, 3 Red-throated Loon, and 108 Horned Grebe. At
Elevator Bay, in addition to the Eurasian Wigeon, I noted the hybrid
Eurasian-American Wigeon.
Directions: DuPont Plant: From Hwy. 401 take exit 615 (Sir John A.
MacDonald) and proceed south to King St. West and turn right (west). Proceed
west past Portsmouth Ave. to Cataraqui (Elevator) Bay where King St. becomes
Front Rd. and where the Dupont (Invista) Plant property begins. The Dupont
Pond is located by turning left (south) at the traffic lights and left again
onto the road through the fence.
Directions: Amherst Island: Located 18 km. west of Kingston. Exit off Hwy.
401 at exit 593 (County Rd. 4, Camden East) and drive south to the very end
(Millhaven).
Turn right on Hwy. 33 and drive 100 metres until you see the sign for the
Amherst Island ferry. The ferry (20 minute trip) leaves the mainland on the
half hour and leaves the island on the hour. Cost is now $8.00 Canadian
round trip. There are no gas stations on the island. There are restrooms on
the ferry, and at the island ferry dock. The East End K.F.N. property
is at the easternmost part of the island on the east side of the Lower
Forty Foot Road. Please read below.
Because of liability issues, visitors to the Kingston Field Naturalists'
property at the east end of Amherst Island MUST be accompanied by a KFN
member. For KFN contact information or how to become a member, please visit
http://kingstonfieldnaturalists.org/ ."
Please Note: The Owl Wood's is closed for public safety
due to deer hunting from Nov 24 - Dec 9.

Weather:
Today saw mostly overcast conditions for much of the day but with some
sunny breaks particularly later in the day. Winds were light mainly varying
from the west in the morning to southeast in the afternoon.
Raptor Observations:
As has been the pattern of late, the early part of the day was devoid of
any movement of raptors. In fact, a large proportion of the flight was
during about a three-hour period from late morning into the early
afternoon. This compact movement is quite typical of November flights of
birds and very unlike some of the late day pushes we have been seeing
lately. Buteos dominated the flight on the whole per usual but today there
was a very high percentage of Red-shoulders seen in the overall count for
the day.
Non-raptor Observations:
Small flocks of migrating Tundra Swans have been noted the last couple of
days along with large numbers of migrant diving ducks, mostly Scaup and
Canvasback.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Bohemian Waxwings Willow Beach, Lake Simcoe Nov.4
From: "M. Bain" <mjcbain(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 4 Nov 2007 6:13pm
Further to Ron Fleming's post of November 3, Richard Pope and I went to look
for the Pine Grosbeaks at the north end of Kenendy Road today without
success. However, when we went on to Willow Beach, just west of Jackson's
Point on the south shore of Lake Simcoe, we found a pure flock of 25
trilling Bohemian Waxwings flycatching from a small leafless ash tree at
#840 Montsell Ave., about 100m south of the lake. We then drove some of the
streets just east of there and came across two separate flocks of Cedar
Waxwings mixed in with American Robins, but no more Bohemians.
Woodlots and fields in the area held large flocks of starlings, robins,
cowbirds, and Red-winged Blackbirds.

Visitors:
With the predicted NW winds there were lots of folks out today including
Don and Beth Wigle who were out for a second day along with a "whack" of
the usual gang.
Weather:
Unfortunately, there was a fairly heavy bank of fog covering the area to
the east of the hawkwatch which resulted in a slower flight. Temp made it
to 13 C. There was no wind at all to start the day...but when it did pick
up it was from the W and then NW...but eventually it became variable.
Raptor Observations:
A smaller flight due to the weather...total of 147 birds. Only one Golden
Eagle today...along with a single Merlin.
Non-raptor Observations:

Subject: [Ontbirds] Eared Grebe, Little Gull etc Presqu'ile/Prince
Edward County
From: "Heather Pickard" <h.pickard(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 4 Nov 2007 9:49pm
Tony Beck led a group of enthusiastic birders to Prince Edward County and
Presqu'ile Provincial Park where we enjoyed an excellent weekend of birding
due mainly to the mild weather, excellent viewing conditions, abundant
pleasant company and the good birds we found.
Birding highlights included the find on Saturday of an adult Eared Grebe,
faded but still in summer plumage, viewed from the lighthouse area at
Prince Edward Point between 2:00 and 2:15 pm, first spotted by Rick Collins.
Birding Prince Edward Point area and Point Traverse also provided views of
impressive numbers of Long-tailed Ducks, Lesser Scaup and over 200 Horned
Grebes.
Early Sunday morning at Gosport (Brighton Area) a juvenile Bald Eagle was
seen in flight and the excellent viewing conditions for birding continued on
Sunday as we birded Presqu'ile. Sightings of note included a flock of 14
Eastern Bluebirds seen from the path leading to Owen Point, a Northern
Goshawk soaring over High Bluff Island, the 160 Common Loons and 8
Red-throated Loons in Popham Bay, and an Adult Little Gull, a life bird for
many, seen from Gull Island thanks to Don Shanahan who pointed it out to our
group. Also, we enjoyed good views of an adult Northern Shrike in the park
and an excellent selection of various waterfowl in Presqu'ile Bay including
Redhead, Canvasback and all three Scoter species. Special thanks to Fred
Helleiner for his warm hospitality and park birding information.
Heather Pickard
Directions:
Presqu'ile Provincial Park is on Lake Ontario near the town of Brighton
accessed from the 401 just west of Trenton.
Prince Edward Point is on Lake Ontario in Prince Edward County between
Belleville and Napanee south of Highway 401.

Subject: [Ontbirds]OFO Grand Bend Area Field Trip -THREE LOON DAY
From: Maris Apse <apsemaris(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 4 Nov 2007 7:24pm
Hi all,
After outlining the day's plan, 10 participants in 6 vehicles proceeded to
the main beach, where we spent the first hour finding - Horned Grebe, all 3
scoter sp, C. Goldeneye, Ring-necked Duck, Redhead, Gr. Scaup, Red-throated and
PACIFIC Loon. An adult Little Gull flying south with a flock of Bonaparte's as
we left the beach.(Blake Mann only).
GBSL was our second stop, where we continued ticking waterfowl - Am Coot,
Green-winged Teal, Gadwall, N.Shoveler, Am. Wigeon, Black Duck, Bufflehead,
L.Scaup, Ruddy Duck and a single white Snow Goose flying with hundreds of
Canadas. We also had 1 Killdeer, Hairy and Downy Woodpecker, Song and Am. Tree
Sparrow, Am. Pipit, Horned Lark, E. Bluebird and our first of several flocks of
Snow Bunting.
At Pinery P.P. we found 2 Bald Eagles, Red-tailed hawk, 2 Pied-billed
Grebe, Gt. B. Heron, Red-bellied and Red-headed Woodpecker, both kinglets,
Tufted Titmouse, both Nuthatches, Cedar Waxwing, Am. Robin, Gray Catbird, Swamp
Sparrow and Purple Finch and ate lunch at the Visitors Centre.
En route to Kettle Point we located a N. Shrike just south of the golf
course on Elliott Rd. where it was yesterday. We saw our 1st Gt. Black-backed
Gull 'dominating' a dead carp on the beach, while about a dozen Herring Gulls
waited, at the point we saw the last 1 or 2 cormorants and further south a
Common Loon, 9 Dunlin and another flock of Snow Buntings.
Our last stop was at Forest lagoons where we added N.Pintail and
Wilson's Snipe to finish with 70 species(unless I add the Am. Kestrel on my home
along Hickory Creek Road).
Thanks to all the participants for a most enjoyable day and cheers!
