This is Chris Lewis reporting. A week of very pleasant weather made for comfortable birding for this time of year in the Ottawa area. Recent waterfowl reports included 2 Snow Geese at Constance Bay on the 4th, a lone juvenile Brant on the shore at the east end of Andrew Haydon Park still present as of Nov. 4th, a few Long-tailed Ducks and all 3 species of scoters between the Deschenes rapids and Constance Bay, increasing numbers of Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye and Hooded Mergansers in various locations, and the first seasonal report of a male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE on the river between the Champlain Bridge and Remic rapids on the 31st. This bird was seen from the Remic rapids lookout on the 3rd, and a male Barrow's was also seen on the Rideau River north of the Rideau Tennis Club on the 4th. At least one Red-throated Loon was still at Shirley's Bay on the 2nd, several Horned Grebes and a few Red-necked Grebes continue to hang out on the Ottawa River, and at least 2 EARED GREBES were still at the Alfred sewage lagoons on the 31st. Raptor reports included a very late Osprey at Shirley's Bay from the 31st to the 4th, Bald Eagle, Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed and Rough-legged Hawk and Merlin in various locations, and individual Peregrine Falcons at Greenbank Rd. south of Fallowfield Rd. on the 30th, and at Deschenes on the 2nd. Shorebirds have as expected become quite scarce; a late Greater Yellowlegs was at Shirley's Bay boat launch on the 3rd, a couple of Black-bellied Plovers were at Andrew Haydon Park and Constance Bay on the 4th and a single White-rumped Sandpiper was at the east end of Andrew Haydon also on the 4th. A record high Ottawa-area number of at least 75 Sandhill Cranes was counted in the Milton Rd. area northeast of Carlsbad Springs on the 31st; 36 were noted here on the 2nd. Two Eastern Screech-Owls were reported near Cumberland Ridge Rd. back on the 24th, and single Northern Shrikes were reported from this location as well as from the Kerwin Rd. area between Kanata and Dunrobin this past week. A late Chipping Sparrow was discovered on the Jack Pine Trail along Moodie Dr. on the 28th and a Fox Sparrow was here on the 28th and the 3rd. A rather late Eastern Meadowlark was seen along March Valley Rd. on the 3rd, and a flock of approx. 40 Rusty Blackbirds was found along Giroux Rd. east of Frank Kenny Rd. on the 3rd as well. Reports of Bohemian Waxwings, Snow Buntings, Pine Grosbeaks, Pine Siskins and Evening Grosbeaks continue to come in, and the first Common Redpolls of the season have begun to arrive, with a few fly-overs reported since the 29th. The = birds were originally found in a corn stubble field at the SE corner of Orkney = Rd & Hwy 5 along with hundreds of Canada Geese, a few Cackling Geese and = three white morph Snow Geese. However, the birds all flew off towards the = east after a few minutes. I did manage to find one of the Ross's and the = Snows with many Canadas and a Cackling at the next farm just east of Orkney Rd = on the south side of Hwy 5. The birds were at the back of the bare field behind house no. 1530 (0.4 km E of Orkney Rd) where there is an = irrigation pond. Unfortunately, at times the subject geese may be out of sight if = in the pond or in a hollow in the field. Patience may be required, and = these birds seem to move about frequently between the fields, even as far as = those on the west side of Hwy 52 a few km east (where a Greater White-fronted Goose had been found about 10 days ago), so the whole area should be checked. I ran out of the house this morning around 8am to catch up with my girlfriend and upon reaching two doors down I stopped her in her tracks when I heard the unmistakable call of a Bohemian Waxwing. I told her to "freeze" and ran back for my bins. Sure enough a single Bohemian stood at the peak of the tree amid a half dozen Cedars and stayed in the general vacinity for a good 5 minutes until flying off northeast to another backyard. Sarah, my girlfriend, enjoyed the unique size comparisons between the two species as well as enjoyed her life bird looks through my bins! I did manage to backtrack two yards and see it for my Guelph yard list! I am visiting the Guelph Arboretum this afternoon and will certainly post if more waxwings are there. Cheers, Andrew Keaveney UofGtwitcher Directions: Toronto St. is just up from the Speed River where it crosses at Gordon St. near Wellington. The Guelph Arboretum is wedged in the corner of Stone Rd. and Victoria Rd. on the University of Guelph property (where all are welcome!). _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself with free Messenger emoticons. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds] Western Tanager, Cave Swallows - LONG POINT November 5, 2007 From: Stuart Mackenzie <s_a_mackenzie(AT)yahoo.ca> Date: 5 Nov 2007 12:10pm Hello All, The Western Tanager was re-found this morning at the Long Point Bird Observatory's Old Cut field station by George Pond. It was hanging around until about 1300, but is likely still in the area. It is most commonly seen in the Old Cut woodlot property high in the pines, feasting on fermenting grapes and catching the odd fly. The bird is incredibly secretive so it will take a little time and effort if you're going to look for it. There were also 7 Cave Swallows foraging low around the Tip this morning. This makes 10 for the Long Point area so far this fall. Two were observed at the Tip on October 20th, and another single bird at the Tip on November 1st. We have yet to have any on the mainland. Cheers, Stu LPBO is situated on the north shore of lake Erie, in Canada. From Highway 401 or Highway 3, come south on Highway 59 to the north shore of Lake Erie. We're on Old Cut Blvd. on Long Point, just two streets before Highway 59 ends at Long Point Provincial Park. We are the 6th building on the right as you head north on Old Cut Blvd. from Highway 59. Non-raptor Observations: Good numbers of ducks including Shovelers, Gadwall, Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal. Lots of American Coots. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Bob Hall-Brooks (bhall-brooks(AT)cogeco.ca) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ Site Description: Holiday Beach Conservation Area was formerly a Provincial Park, but is now administered by the Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA). It is strategically located at the extreme southwestern tip of southern Ontario. The park is on the eastern end of a large freshwater estuary known as Big Creek. (Specifically the site is 1.1 miles south of the junction Highway 20 (old 18) and Essex Road 50, Town of Amherstburg). The Holiday Beach Migration Observatory (HBMO) (founded in 1986) is a non-profit, volunteer organization formed to promote the study and protection of migrating birds. Activities focus primarily on fall migration of raptors and other species. This site is in Essex County, Ontario, on the north shore of Lake Erie near the Detroit River. In 1988, HBMO persuaded Detroit Edison to donate a 40 foot Hawk Tower which is now at the site. Southwestern Ontario has a funneling effect on migrating raptors due to the geography of the nearby lakes and the reluctance of most raptors to cross large bodies of water. Birds gain altitude over the flat farmland to the north and east, rising easily with the thermals that such areas provide in abundance. As the birds head south they meet Lake Erie and, reluctant to cross it , turn west. With appropriate wind and weather conditions, birds pile up along the lake shore and move west until they reach the narrow crossing at the Detroit River (or island hop within the river mouth). Directions to site: Entering Canada from Detroit at the Ambassador Bridge: After Canadian Customs, stay left 50 yards, passing over the railroad tracks. You are now on Huron Church Road leading to Highway 401 and Highway 3. Continue east 3.8 miles to the intersection with Todd and Cabana roads. Go through the intersection, staying to the right. In less than 100 yards the main road splits; 401 and 3 continue to the left as the main road and Huron Church narrows and angles to the right. Follow Huron Church right for 0.5 miles to Disputed Road. After anglign a right turn onto Disputed Road, travel south. At 4 miles Disputed Road intersects with Townline Road, and the name changes to Concession 5. Continue south 5 miles and Concession 5 "T"'s with South Townline Road. Turn left and travel east 0.2 miles, turning right (south) onto Concession 6. Continue south for 3.4 miles to the intersection with Highway 20 at Malden Centre in the town of Amherstburg. There is a restaurant/convenience/gas store on the southeast corner of the intersection. Go through the intersection south onto Route 50 for 1.3 miles. The entrance to the Holiday Beach Conservation Area is on the right. Pay entry fee and continue to the Hawk Tower at the south end of the park. Park vehicle and walk to the tower. West bound on Routes 401 and 3 Howard Avenue, Route 9, intersects Routes 401 and 3 east of Windsor. Take Howard Avenue south to Highway 20 ("T"'s) and turn left (west) traveling to Malden Centre in the town of Amherstburg. A restaurant/convenience/gas store is on the left. Turn left (south) on to Route 50 for 1.3 miles; the entrance to HBCA is on the right. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
