Subject: [Ontbirds]Ross's Goose at Peter's Corners (Hamilton)
From: "darling" <darling(AT)aucegypt.edu>
Date: 6 Nov 2007 6:38pm
Just before 8:30 a.m. November 6 we located the Ross's Goose among Canada Geese
by going down Orkney Road about 200 yards from Highway #5. As we watched the
birds took off with most flying to the south-east. There had obviously been
many more on the other side of the ridge, because there were hundreds. Among
those that flew SE were three white geese (probably the Snow Geese mentioned in
Rob Dobos' posting [see below]). The Ross's Goose was part of a smaller group
that flew north. WE drove round the whole section, but could not find the geese
again.
The Cattle Egrets were best seen from Woodhill Road about 50 yards north of
highway #5.
Directions: see below.
Sandy Darling
Flamborough
Rob's posting:
At about 12:00 today (Nov. 5) I found two adult Ross's Geese a few km west
of Peters Corners (junction of Hwys 5, 8 & 52) west of Hamilton. The birds
were originally found in a corn stubble field at the SE corner of Orkney Rd
& Hwy 5 along with hundreds of Canada Geese, a few Cackling Geese and three
white morph Snow Geese. However, the birds all flew off towards the east
after a few minutes. I did manage to find one of the Ross's and the Snows
with many Canadas and a Cackling at the next farm just east of Orkney Rd on
the south side of Hwy 5. The birds were at the back of the bare field
behind house no. 1530 (0.4 km E of Orkney Rd) where there is an irrigation
pond. Unfortunately, at times the subject geese may be out of sight if in
the pond or in a hollow in the field. Patience may be required, and these
birds seem to move about frequently between the fields, even as far as those
on the west side of Hwy 52 a few km east (where a Greater White-fronted
Goose had been found about 10 days ago), so the whole area should be
checked.
Also, the two Cattle Egrets were still at the farm at the NE corner of
Woodhill Rd & Hwy 5 just a few km west of this location.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Franklin's, Little Gulls at Erieau
From: "Keith Burk" <keithburk2(AT)ciaccess.com>
Date: 6 Nov 2007 12:56pm
Hi all,
At noon today I observed a first basic Franklin's Gull at Erieau in the
marina. It was hanging out all by itself not associating with the Bonies.
There were also two definitive basic plumaged Little Gulls flying amongst
the couple thousand Bonies.
Erieau is always very productuve on strong west winds.
Jim Burk
Blenheim, On.
Exit 401 at Highway 40/Blenheim exit. Head to the lights in Blenheim and
turn right. Head striaght out of town 2 kilometers til you turn left to head
towards Erieau. Once in Erieau, keep right until you get to a three way
stop. Turn left, then immediately right. The marina is dead ahead on the
right.

From: "Jody Allair" <jody.allair(AT)animail.com>
Date: 6 Nov 2007 11:31am
Hey Ontbirders,
At 10:45 a.m. today 2 Cave Swallows were found flying west over the Bird
Studies Canada HQ property. The birds did not linger for very long. Strong
west winds along the lake also produced a first basic Thayer's Gull and
Little Gull amongst hundreds of Bonaparte's Gulls from the overlook on the
BSC property. An hour watching the lake at The Coves this afternoon did
not turn up any more Cave Swallows but did produce a flock of 10 exhausted
Dunlin.
Also of note is that the Western Tanager has not been seen today at the Old
Cut field station.
Good Birding.

Observers:
Weather:
Today was cool, cloudy and windy. We saw no sunshine, and there was
frequent intermittent light drizzle all day. Winds were gusty at 20 - 40
km/hr, starting from the SW and shifting to W by early afternoon.
Temperature rose from 3.2 to a high of 5.9.
Raptor Observations:
Raptor migration was minimal, with two Golden Eagles just before 9am being
the highlight. The only excitement of the afternoon was watching the wind
blow the "Port-a-potty" over.
Non-raptor Observations:
Passerine migration was very light. About 170 Bonapartes Gulls passed
through in groups of 20 to 50 during the morning, seemingly intent on
heading west and paying little attention to the marsh. The speed of these
agile flyers despite the strong headwind was quite remarkable.
Predictions:
Another cool day starting at 1 degree with a high of 6. The forecast calls
for a mix of sun and clooud with a chance of showers in the early morning.
Winds are predicted to be moderate from the west (or possibly northwest!).

This morning at 10:50 a:m, Alan Wormington and I had 2 Cave Swallows on the east
side at the Tip of Point Pelee. They flew down to the tip area, caught the
west winds and then flew back north over our heads. Very cool!!
Other birds among many included migrating Dunlin, a Sanderling, the usual
waterfowl and gulls, along with a pair of Gadwall, a Wood Duck, and a Black Duck
thrown into the mix. Also of note was a late Cliff Swallow and 4 Tree
Swallows.
Good Birding,

Subject: [Ontbirds]adult California Gull - Ottawa
From: Tony Beck <beck.tony(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 6 Nov 2007 3:07pm
Hello Ontbirders
This afternoon, between 4:20 and 4:35, at the Quarry Ponds off Moodie
Drive (main pond), I observed what I'm almost certain is an adult
nonbreeding California Gull.
The bird was sitting on the water at a distance with other gulls,
mainly Herring.
I was able to do side-by-side comparison of size, shape, mantle-
colour, etc., with both adult Herring and adult Ring-billed.
The bird's size was between the two for-mentioned species. And, the
mantle was just slightly darker, regardless of the bird's angle. The
tertial step was thick (considerably thicker than Ring-billed). The
primary tips had extensive dark on both upper & lower sides, with
bright mirrors on the outer two primaries. The head had dark streaks
mainly on the nape. The eye was dark (comparison made to Herring).
And, the long & straight bill had a dark ring, similar to Ring-billed
Gull. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to confirm any red on the bill, or
any sense of leg colour other than pale.
I last saw the bird fly with other gulls toward the ponds deeper
inside the quarry property.
Directions courtesy of Neily World: http://ca.geocities.com/
larry.neily(AT)rogers.com/stony8.htm
Independent Directions to this Site: From Highway 416 take exit 66
(Fallowfield Road). If southbound, a 0.4 km offramp dumps onto
Fallowfield, where you will turn right or west. If northbound, the
0.4 km offramp brings you to Fallowfield, where you will turn left or
west onto it and in 0.5 km join the southbound offramp traffic. Both
groups will now follow Fallowfield Road west for an additional 0.4 km
to reach Moodie Drive. Turn left or southeast onto Moodie Drive and
go 5.3 km, passing Cambrian Road to reach the quarries (second gate
on the left). Park along the side of the road without blocking the
access.
Warning: This site is private property and is an active quarry.
Because of liability concerns the pit operators do not allow access
during working hours. Trucks and machinery operate here on workdays,
so please don't block the roads into the quarry. At such times,
limited birding can be accomplished from the roadside, which
overlooks the pond, especially with a good scope.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Sabine's, Kittiwake, Phalarope - Buffalo/Fort Erie
From: Jmpawli88(AT)aol.com
Date: 6 Nov 2007 6:32pm
Bill Watson and I (joined briefly by Willie D'Anna and Dave Gordon) went to
the Buffalo/Fort Erie area today at the mouth of the Niagara River hoping to
catch some of the birds blown into the area by the strong WSW winds out over
Lake Erie. Things looked interesting, although disconsolate when we pulled
into the parking lot at the base of the Bird Island Pier (south end of Squaw
Island) and found a freshly deceased (<3 hrs.) juvenile SABINE'S GULL next to
one of the parked cars in the lot. Talk with one of the fishermen confirmed
that it had perished just recently; I plan on giving it a final resting place
amongst the collection at Cornell University. In the meantime, thousands
(est. 3500) of Bonaparte's Gulls were milling about in the winds, with the
largest concentrations being at Nichol's Marina in Fort Erie, and on both the
US
and CA sides near the International Railroad Bridge. We looked around from
the base of the pier for a while, eventually deciding not to attract any news
groups by walking all the way out to the pier (waves were crashing over) even
though it looked tempting, and stayed in the car and waited out the worst of
the weather for the time being. At about 1:00 p.m. a juv. SABINE'S GULL
flew by close heading upriver into the strong wind, and milled about for some
time high above the water eventually heading towards Fort Erie where I lost it
due to the driving hail. We then got back onto the mainland and crossed the
north Squaw Island bridge to check the north side of the island. After
scanning through the Bonaparte's, we picked up a probable RED PHALAROPE flying
and
drifting about mid-river not far from the Bonies. The driving rain made it
near impossible to stay on it for some time, and at the very least confirm it
as a Red. After initially loosing it, we could no longer refined it despite
searching for the next half hour. Also here with the Bonaparte's across
the river (CA) was an adult LITTLE GULL, and near the wastewater treatment
plant on the island were 2 SNOW BUNTINGS. We then crossed the Peace Bridge
into
Canada and first checked Nichol's Marina and then the railroad bridge.
Nothing notable at the first check of Nichol's Marina, and no luck re-locating
the phalarope at the railroad bridge, although present was a female BLACK
SCOTER flying upriver and a HORNED GREBE. We then went back to Nichol's Marina
and found a nice and close juv. BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE resting amongst the
Bonies on the water. Also flying around briefly for a short time was a juv.
COMMON TERN. A brief check south of the Peace Bridge in the failing light
showed
thousands of Bufflehead out in the rough current, and then back to Nichol's
Marina where the Kittiwake was still present for a brief time, along with an
adult LITTLE GULL.
