Subject: [Ontbirds]Ross's Goose at Peter's Corners (Hamilton)
From: "darling" <darling(AT)aucegypt.edu>
Date: 7 Nov 2007 2:27am
Just before 8:30 a.m. November 6 we located the Ross's Goose among Canada Geese
by going down Orkney Road about 200 yards from Highway #5. As we watched the
birds took off with most flying to the south-east. There had obviously been
many more on the other side of the ridge, because there were hundreds. Among
those that flew SE were three white geese (probably the Snow Geese mentioned in
Rob Dobos' posting [see below]). The Ross's Goose was part of a smaller group
that flew north. WE drove round the whole section, but could not find the geese
again.
The Cattle Egrets were best seen from Woodhill Road about 50 yards north of
highway #5.
Directions: see below.
Sandy Darling
Flamborough
Rob's posting:
At about 12:00 today (Nov. 5) I found two adult Ross's Geese a few km west
of Peters Corners (junction of Hwys 5, 8 & 52) west of Hamilton. The birds
were originally found in a corn stubble field at the SE corner of Orkney Rd
& Hwy 5 along with hundreds of Canada Geese, a few Cackling Geese and three
white morph Snow Geese. However, the birds all flew off towards the east
after a few minutes. I did manage to find one of the Ross's and the Snows
with many Canadas and a Cackling at the next farm just east of Orkney Rd on
the south side of Hwy 5. The birds were at the back of the bare field
behind house no. 1530 (0.4 km E of Orkney Rd) where there is an irrigation
pond. Unfortunately, at times the subject geese may be out of sight if in
the pond or in a hollow in the field. Patience may be required, and these
birds seem to move about frequently between the fields, even as far as those
on the west side of Hwy 52 a few km east (where a Greater White-fronted
Goose had been found about 10 days ago), so the whole area should be
checked.
Also, the two Cattle Egrets were still at the farm at the NE corner of
Woodhill Rd & Hwy 5 just a few km west of this location.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Cave Swallow at Erieau
From: "Blake A. Mann" <boatmann(AT)kent.net>
Date: 7 Nov 2007 3:26pm
HI Ontbirders,
Around the noon hour today (Wed.) I came across a lone Cave Swallow in
Erieau at the fish tug harbour (behind Barney's Boats).
My intention was to get a look at the Franklin's Gull, but the swallow was a
bonus. The Franklin's Gull WAS present with a few Bonaparte's in the
channel. Very few gulls compared to yesterday.
As well, there was a late Barn Swallow with the Cave competing for the few
insects that were available.
Decent photos were obtained of the Cave Swallow roosting on the back of the
blue building. I also obtained a photo of the Cave and Barn side by side!
Directions to Erieau: The port of Erieau is located south of Blenheim.
West out of Blenheim on Talbot Trail (Rd. 3), turn left onto (Erieau Rd.)
Rd. 12 and follow to village. (The pier area is found by continuing
through
the village and turning right at the restaurant intersection).
At the restaurant intersection turn left, then a quick right. Follow road
to the big blue buildings of Barney's Boats. Go behind to the fish tug
harbour.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Boreal Finches - Superflight 2007-2008
From: Jean Iron <jeaniron(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 7 Nov 2007 6:20pm
We are experiencing the biggest winter finch irruption since the
"superflight" of 1997-1998, when many boreal finches went well beyond
their normal ranges. The cause is the largest tree seed crop failure
in a decade across more than 3200 km (2000 mi) of boreal forest from
Saskatchewan into Quebec. Today in Toronto, I had a Pine Grosbeak,
Evening Grosbeaks, Common Redpolls, Pine Siskins and Purple Finches
migrating along the shoreline of Lake Ontario. Boreal winter finches
are being reported in many areas of southern Ontario and the United
States, where some species such as Pine and Evening Grosbeaks haven't
been seen in years. There is no telling how far south this
"superflight" will go and how many finches will remain in Ontario
this winter. Stock your feeders.
Winter Finch Forecast 2007-2008 is stored at two sites.

Subject: [Ontbirds]High Park - Eagles and Bluebirds
From: "Norman Murr" <normurr(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 7 Nov 2007 4:01pm
Today was a decent day to be at Hawk Hill in High Park as we ( the very few who
were there ) got to see 200 plus Raptors including 5 Golden Eagles, all fairly
low and just above the hill. We also had a visit of about 30 Eastern Blue birds
on the hill. At one time we were graced by these beautiful birds with 2o birds
all around us and close up. All told we saw 53 Eastern Bluebirds as well as A.
Pipits and 500 Red-winged Blackbirds, etc. as they flew west over the hill.
A Cool NW wind blew all day but the bird sightings warmed us up some what.
Directions:-
HAWK HILL IN HIGH PARK
High Park is located in the west end of Toronto and is bounded on the south by
The Queensway, the north by Bloor Street and on the east by Parkside Drive.
To reach High Park you can take the TTC Subway to the High Park Station or the
Queen Street Streetcar #501 to either the Parkside Drive or the Colborne Lodge
Drive streetcar stops or you may drive in from High Park Avenue at the north end
of the park.
Hawk Hill is east of or right beside the Algonquin Restaurant (about halfway
into the park) which is south of the soccer field. If you can not find the hill
for the trees then you can enquire at the restaurant as to the location as
almost everyone is aware of the goings on up there now.
There is always someone on the hill from Sep. 1st to around Nov. 30th.
Best days are days with a good NW or N wind and if a cold front comes along with
those winds after a rainy day then you should see lots of Raptors (No
Guarantees).

Weather:
Sunny breaks during the morning gave way to generally overcast conditions
in the afternoon. Winds were light to moderate out of the west.
Raptor Observations:
Today saw a substantial if modest improvement in the flight after a couple
of days with a light passage of birds. Much of the movement was during the
brighter portions of the day but with a steady trickle recorded even under
the cloudy skies of the afternoon. Highlights included a dark morph
Rough-leg and a partially albino Red-tail.
Non-raptor Observations:
Half a dozen or so Tree Swallows were seen today. There is a reasonable
chance of seeing Cave Swallows in the coming days, particularly as there
have been recent sightings within the region.

Non-raptor Observations:
Passerine migration was quite steady with many flocks of mixed blackbird

Rusty Blackbirds briefly perched in a tree right next to the tower. The
Red-bellied Woodpecker was seen once again.
Predictions:
Low of 1, high of 7. Winds mild to moderate out of the south. Cloudy with

Subject: [Ontbirds]RE: Common Redpoll near Glen Morris
From: Earthquest Canada <hikersguide(AT)hotmail.com>

Nov. 8, 2007
Dear fellow birders:
Today, while performing Ecological Land Classification at Foulds Tract my team
and I spotted a small flock of Common Redpoll on the northeast corner of the
Tract. Foulds Tract is a 19.5 hectare forest tract managed by the Grand River
Conservation Authority located approximately 3 km. south of the town of Glen
Morris, near Cambridge. To get there take Highway #24 south through Cambridge
to Glen Morris Rd., which is just north of Pinehurst Conservation Area. Turn
left, heading east and proceed over the Grand River to the town of Glen Morris.
At East River Rd., turn right, heading west and continue to McLean School Rd.
Turn left, heading east to McPherson School Rd. The Redpolls were seen at the
corner of McLean School Rd. and McPherson School Rd. on the south side of the
road in a wetspot
Good birding!
