Subject: [Ontbirds]flock of Bohemian Waxwings
From: "Linda Wells" <lastwoundup(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 11 Nov 2007 8:10am
On Sat. Nov. 10th at 2:30 pm - after a morning birding Lake Simcoe shore
from Jackson's Point to Cook Bay with members of the Lake Simcoe Naturalists
Club - I was getting into my car on Land's End drive and in front of #9 -
there alighted a flock of 150+ Bohemian Waswings - I was able to have a
good look at the red undertail marking so I knew they were the target bird
we had sought earlier . The flock quickly took off heading south- east
toward the Salvation Army Camp. I did not find them.
Lone birds for the day included a Snow Bunting feeding on dried grass heads
on the verge of Kennedy Road north of the fenced off Hydro Station and a
Pied Billed Grebe diving near a large group of Buffleheads looking north
from the Roche's Point Municipal Fishing Pier .

Date: 11 Nov 2007 9:21am
Sorry for not posting but last Sunday I had an excellent sighting of two BOREAL
CHICKADEES on the Spruce Bog Trail right where there is a bench dedicated to
Arthur Despard. I did not realize that there had been no other sightings of
them reported last week. Maureen Smith
Directions:
Algonquin Park is three hours north of Toronto, via Highways 400, 11
and 60. Follow the signs, which start in Toronto on Highway 400. From
Ottawa, take Highway 17 to Renfrew, then follow Highway 60 to the
park. Kilometre markers along Highway 60 in the Park go from the West
Gate (km 0) to the East Gate (km 56). Permits and information are
available daily at both gates throughout the winter, including the Algonquin
Information Guide showing locations discussed here.
The Visitor Centre (km 43) is open on weekends (10 to 4) through the
winter. Recent bird sightings and information, plus feeders, can be found
there. Birders visiting during the week are welcome to contact staff for
birding information via the service entrance (right end of the building
as you face it from the parking lot).

Subject: [Ontbirds]SNOW GEESE, 23 migrating raptors at
Cranberry-Nov.11
From: "Doug Lockrey" <lockrey33(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 11 Nov 2007 3:20pm
When I arrived at the Cranberry platform the temp.was 0C, BP rising, but the
wind was light and out of the S; very little thermal activity. As more and more
people came to assist with the Raptor Watch the BP started to fall and the temp.
rose to 9C-- not much to be expected. Passerines-Am.pipits and 5 different
sparrows (but no Fox), 2 Snow Geese, 1 Cackling Goose.
I left to do some remembering.
By the time I got back the platform was empty, and the temp. was dropping, AND
the wind was strong, but out of the SE. However, I did manage to log in 3
Sharp-shinneds and 8 Red-taileds over 30 minutes.
Nov.11 totals--1 N.Harrier, 7 Sharp-shinned, 1 Red-shouldered, 12 red-tailed, 1
Rough-legged, 1 Am.Kestrel.
The CMRW total from Aug.21 to Nov.11 is 10,346, 80% of which have come through
on 22 of the 84 days when the winds were medium-strong out of the N/NW, BP was
rising and the thermals were at least 200 ft./min.
>From Victoria St. in southwest Whitby, go south down Hall's Rd. (1 block east
of LakeRidge Rd.) to the second roadside parking area, just north of the
lakefront.
Doug Lockrey, coordinator CMRW
AS STRONG windI took part of the morning off to do some remembering.

From: "Dennis Lewington" <dengwen(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 11 Nov 2007 6:12pm
This afternoon about 1 P.M., on our way home from the Bruce, we saw at least 250
Sandhill Cranes
feeding in a grassy pasture on # 6 Highway, just south of Hepworth. They were
on the west side of
the highway, north of Park Head Road, and just north of green sign 018730.
We also saw these Sandhill Cranes on Friday afternoon, about 3:00 P.M. on the
east side of # 6
Highway in a corn stubble field, just south of where we saw them today.
What a great sight to see this many Sandhill Cranes!!!!! Dennis & Gwen

Subject: [Ontbirds]Northern Gannet
From: Dave Don <dave.don(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 11 Nov 2007 7:29pm
Birders,
The juvenile Northern Gannet found by Rob Dobos yesterday, was still
present on the western end of lake Ontario this afternoon Sunday,
probably ranging from the Burlington lift bridge to 50 point. John Lamey
and myself observed it at Grays Rd being harassed by 3 Ring-billed
gulls. Brandon Holden had seen it off Hutches restaurant earlier this
afternoon.
After close to 3hrs of searching, the male Barrows Goldeneye was finally
located off Lawrence P Sayer Park, between Grays and Green Rd in Stoney
Creek, in with literally hundreds and hundreds of ducks. Lots of
patience is required, and beware of the hybrid!
Good luck,
Dave Don

Subject: [Ontbirds]Quick trip around Amherst Island
From: "Ott User" <willott123(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 11 Nov 2007 5:22pm
Hi.
Took a quick trip to Amherst Island on Saturday, Nov. 10th. Didn't
see many hawks although there were some including a Northern Harrier flying
over water along the South Shore Road. There was a very active Northern
Shrike just up the road from the KFN property. It would perch on the fence
and fly down into the grass to catch insects and did this numerous times.
It was there almost everytime I drove past the stretch of road. A Barred
Owl was seen along the main trail in the owl woods. I had very good looks
at it and was hard to miss given its size and sunlight lighting it up.
Although I didn't see any of the Long-eared Owls, someone else mentioned
having seen 4 of them in the open just before the Jack Pines. Given the
time of day I thought it rather strange to have them in the open so assume
they must have been flushed. In addition to the usual feeder birds (feeding
at or near the feeders in the owl woods) there was a robin on the stretch of
road leading to the owl woods from the South Shore road. The main trail in
the owl woods is dry (no need for boots). Of course there are two posted
signs reminding people that the owl woods will be closed to the public from
November 24th to December 9th during deer hunting. There is one sign posted
not too far in on the main trail in the owl woods that states "No Public
Access Beyond This Point" during the period stated.
Some photos of the aforementioned birds.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Toronto - High Park Raptor Watch Nov 5-11
From: High Park Raptor Watch <hprw2006-hawks(AT)yahoo.ca>
Date: 11 Nov 2007 10:00pm
This is an official posting from the High Park Hawk Watch.
Station: High Park, Toronto, Ontario
View Period: November 5 to November 11, 2007
Station coordinator: Don Barnett
Counters: D. Barnett, R. Carswell, C. Harte, M. Kelch, M. Lichtenberg, N.
McHugh, N. Murr, D. Peuramaki, H. Shapiro and D. Woods
GTRW Webmaster: Andy Hampton
There were 274 migrating raptors observed this week at the High Park Raptor
Watch. Of these 245 were Red-tailed Hawks. The birds were observed on two days
Wednesday, November 7th (210 raptors) and Saturday, November 10th (73 raptors).
The fall migration of raptors past HPRW is nearly finished. The site will be
monitored on a selective basis when there is north or northwest winds for the
remainder of this fall season (until end November).
From previous years observations we expect approximately 500 more raptors to
be observed at HPRW for the balance of November with the majority being
Red-tailed Hawks.
Detailed analysis of the 2007 HPRW data will be issued in December 2007. This
will include comparison to the previous 14 years of observation at HPRW. This
analysis will be posted on the Toronto Ornithological Club’s web site at
www.torontobirding.ca

High Park is a 400 acre wooded park dominated by a Black Oak Savannah located
just west of Downtown Toronto near Keele and Bloor. The park is operated by the
City of Toronto Parks Department.
The Count site (Hawk Hill) is located on a small hill
at the north end of the Grenadier Restaurant parking lot. It is located about
1.5km (1 mile) north of Lake Ontario, at an elevation of 110 metres above sea
level and 38 metres above Lake Ontario. The site location is N 43 degrees 37
