Subject: [BIRDHAWK] Derby Hill Counter 2008 Vacancy
To: BIRDHAWK(AT)listserv.arizona.edu
HAWK COUNTER-BIOLOGIST: Derby Hill Bird Observatory, Sage Creek Road,
Mexico, NY. Located at the SE corner of Lake Ontario, Onondaga Audubon
Society has employed a professional hawk counter here since 1979. The
primary responsibility is to conduct a hawk count and submit records
to the HMANA online database daily. Also interacting with visitors to
the hawk watch is important, as well as communicating online about the
spring migration at Derby Hill. A final report is required.
Previous experience as a primary or secondary hawk counter is
desirable. Equivalent field experience is acceptable. This is an
excellent opportunity for an energetic individual working along a
career path in biology, ecology, conservation or allied field where
this experience will be beneficial.
You'll need your own binoculars, spotting scope, and transportation.
Housing is provided right at the hawk watch and includes a computer
with internet access. A $3000 stipend is paid for the season: 1 March
through 31 May 2008.
A cover letter and resume should be sent by November 20, 2007 to:
Spring2008(AT)derbyhill.org
or Derby Hill Search, Onondaga Audubon Society, PO Box 620,
Syracuse, NY 13201.

Subject: [Ontbirds]White Mandarine Escapee

Date: 12 Nov 2007 7:12am
Thanks to everyone that emailed me trying to identify my mystery bird,
spotted Saturday November 10th, 2007 In Burlington.
Some thought domestic, while others said Call Duck, Wood Duck, and Mandarin.
After sending the link to my photos to Call Duck breeders Associations in
the USA and U.K. it seems that the mysterious duck is a White Female
Mandarin. Obviously and escaped female leucistic Mandarin.
I would like to thank Mark Cranford at the OFO for informing me of the show
at the Royal Winter Fair this week, which may be where the bird escaped
from. Hopefully it can survive on its own.
My link to the bird
http://home.cogeco.ca/~mveltri2/rare_leucosticte_wood_duck.htm
And a link confirming what a white female Mandarin looks like. I have been
sent a few links but the short video on this one is great.

Also Bluebirds, Kestrels, and numerous Red tailed hawks along with a Ruby
crowned Kinglet photographed in Bronte Park Sunday November 11th, 2007
Directions to the Park

kilometres north of the QEW.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Kingston Area: Eurasian Wigeon & Short-eared Owls
From: "Bruce Di Labio" <bruce.dilabio(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 12 Nov 2007 11:52am
Hi Everyone
The male Eurasian Wigeon was still present yesterday, Nov. 11th, late
afternoon at Elevator Bay/DuPont Plant. Also, on Amherst Island at dusk on
Nov. 10th, we observed 5 Short-eared Owls in the fields just south of
Stella. The lone Brant was still at the gravel bar, east end of the island,
KFN property.
good birding, Bruce
Directions: DuPont Plant: From Hwy. 401 take exit 615 (Sir John A.
MacDonald) and proceed south to King St. West and turn right (west). Proceed
west past Portsmouth Ave. to Cataraqui (Elevator) Bay where King St. becomes
Front Rd. and where the Dupont (Invista) Plant property begins. The Dupont
Pond is located by turning left (south) at the traffic lights and left again
onto the road through the fence.
Directions: Amherst Island: Located 18 km. west of Kingston. Exit off Hwy.
401 at exit 593 (County Rd. 4, Camden East) and drive south to the very end
(Millhaven).
Turn right on Hwy. 33 and drive 100 metres until you see the sign for the
Amherst Island ferry. The ferry (20 minute trip) leaves the mainland on the
half hour and leaves the island on the hour. Cost is now $8.00 Canadian
round trip. There are no gas stations on the island. There are restrooms on
the ferry, and at the island ferry dock. The East End K.F.N. property
is at the easternmost part of the island on the east side of the Lower
Forty Foot Road. Please read below.
Because of liability issues, visitors to the Kingston Field Naturalists'
property at the east end of Amherst Island MUST be accompanied by a KFN
member. For KFN contact information or how to become a member, please visit
http://kingstonfieldnaturalists.org/ ."
Please Note: The Owl Wood's is closed for public safety
due to deer hunting from Nov 24 - Dec 9.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Northern Mockingbird, Ottawa
From: "Paul Matthews" <pdmatthews(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 12 Nov 2007 3:17pm
Hello.
This morning I saw a Northern Mockingbird in and around the backyards of Nestow
Ave. This street is located immediately south of the railway line that, in turn,
is south of a large field bordered by Merivale, Woodroffe and the residential
streets south of Viewmount. Viewmount is just south of Meadowlands.
A singing bird of this species was a fixture at this location in the spring of
2006, but a couple of visits this spring did not produce it, and I'd concluded
it was no longer here. I was therefore pleasantly surprised to find it today
(assuming it's the same individual).
The bird was generally silent, but on two occasions uttered a repeated,
moderately loud, sharp yet throaty "chook", sometimes in a series. On these two
occasions an immature Cooper's Hawk had just been in the area.
Note that the field to the north apparently was home to a small flock of Grey
Partridges till recently. Though it seems they haven't been seen for close to a
couple of years now (victims of some predator?), they may reappear just like the
mocker, so it's worth keeping an eye out for them.
Paul Matthews, Ottawa
Directions: The bird generally stays around the backyards close to 86 Nestow,
but these backyards are not readily visible from the street. Although it's more
time-consuming, coming in from the north across the field is more likely to
produce the bird. I suggest that interested birders park near 26 Parkside, which
is one of the crescents on the south side of Viewmount. On the east side of #26
there's a gap that gives access to the field. Take the path south across the
field to the end, then jog left (east) a few dozen metres. The gap allows access
up onto the railway track. In front (to the south) is the backyard of #86,
which features a high, rather untidy cedar hedge. The bare tree behind the hedge
appears to be one of the mockers' favourite perches.

THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 8:30 AM, MONDAY NOVEMBER 12, 2007
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
The bird of the week was an adult CALIFORNIA GULL discovered on Nov. 6th at
the large quarry pond on the east side of Moodie Drive south of Trail Rd. It
was seen here again on the 8th but has not been subsequently reported.
Other highlights this past week included the continuing presence of a male
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE on the Rideau River off Riverain Park , at least 65 Sandhill
Cranes still in the Milton and Trim Rd. area as of the 10th, and an extremely
late adult SEMIPALMATED PLOVER (a November record for Ottawa) at the
quarry pond on Giroux Rd. east of Frank Kenny Rd.
Snow Geese have been sporadically appearing in various locations in one's
and two's, the numbers of diving ducks continue to build up on the Ottawa
River, and 45 Ruddy Ducks were still at the Alfred sewage lagoons along with
a good selection of waterfowl and 2 AMERICAN COOTS on the 10th. A single
GRAY PARTRIDGE was spotted in the Cumberland area on the 10th. The very
late Osprey at Shirley's Bay was even later on the 6th, and it looks
like it may
be a good season for Rough-legged Hawks in our area, as more reports
continue to come in. Shorebird sightings included 2 Killdeer and 5 Pectoral
Sandpipers at the aforementioned pond on Giroux Rd. on the 10th and 4
Dunlin at Shirley's Bay on the 6th. The eastern sewage lagoons continued to
be attractive to some late Bonaparte's Gulls - one was at the St. Albert
lagoons on the 5th, and 50 were at the Embrun lagoons on the 10th. The 1st
seasonal reports of Iceland Gull came in on the 8th from both the Ottawa
River and the Moodie Dr. pond.
Several Horned Larks, a few American Pipits, and good numbers of Snow
Buntings were seen this past week especially east of the city. A somewhat
late Savannah Sparrow visited a feeder in Manotick on the 7th along with 4
Fox Sparrows, and 2 Fox Sparrows were seen along the Jack Pine Trail south
of Bells Corners on the 9th. The influx of Bohemian Waxwings, Pine
Grosbeaks, Common Redpolls and Evening Grosbeaks continues, on a small
scale as yet (but winter isn't here yet either), and a report from
the west side
of Lac La Peche in Gatineau Park on the 11th provided another indication
of an impending "winter invasion" into our area with the aforementioned
species plus a half-dozen White-winged Crossbills.
Thank you - Good Birding!

Subject: [Ontbirds]Presqu'ile Birding
From: "Bruce Di Labio" <bruce.dilabio(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 12 Nov 2007 12:35pm
Hi Everyone
Spent most of yesterday, Nov. 11th, birding Presqu'ile Provincial Park.
Still lots of water birds around including 11 Red-throated Loon, 130+ Common
Loon, 110+ Horned Grebe mainly in Popham Bay. We also observed 21 species of
waterfowl including 1200+ Long-tailed Duck, 5000+ Red-breasted Merganser, 46
Redhead, and 170+ Green-winged Teal. Shorebird variety was limited to 120+
Dunlin and 12 White-rumped Sandpiper all on Gull Island. There was a good
sampling of finches in the park with 22 Pine Grosbeak, 26 Common Redpoll, 3
Pine Siskin and 1 Red Crossbill near the Lighthouse. A late Blue-headed
Vireo was seen in the morning at Owen Point and a Carolina Wren spent most
of the afternoon in the Lighthouse area. A Northern Shrike was observed
hunting along the vegetation on Beach #1.If you require additional
information, please email me privately.
good birding, Bruce
Direction: Presqu'ile Provincial Park: (Courtesy Fred Helleiner)
To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, follow the signs from Brighton.
Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid
that is available at the Park gate. It should be noted that, because
duck hunting is given priority on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and
Saturdays, Gull "Island", High Bluff Island, and part of the calf
pasture are not available for bird-watching on those days. Again this
year, birders and others have been permitted at Owen Point on hunting
days for the first few weeks of the hunting season. A duck blind was
recently erected at Owen Point, so birders should exercise caution in
that area on hunting days until signs are erected restricting access
altogether.

They occupied 5 trees and stayed long even to do a reasonably accurate count
and get pictures. The flock was in the wooded area between Yonge and
Edgewater Sts, north of the corner of Hazeldean and Terry Fox Dr.

Visitors:
A few visitors got the chance to enjoy this great flight as well...but the
counters were a bit too busy to get anyone's name. :)
Weather:
Plenty of cloud cover early...but drier and cool with temp to just 7 C.
This was the first day in a while that looked promising weather wise and
the winds cooperated starting light from the NE and increasing to moderate
ENE and then dropping back to light from the E.
Raptor Observations:
A fantastic buteo flight to start the weekend with 1,780 Redtails, 88
Red-shoulders and 11 Roughlegs. Another 18 Golden Eagles as
well...including 13 juv., 1 Sub Ad. and 4 Adult birds. It was interesting
to tally more Cooper's Hawks (46) than Sharpies (42) for the day. The total
count was 2,056...an excellent count for an early November flight.
Non-raptor Observations:
