[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds] White-fronted Goose, Lesser Black-backed Gull; North Bay area From: richardtafel <rtafel(AT)sympatico.ca> Date: 13 Nov 2007 12:22am All; The said goose has been seen at the now vacant (of golfers) Osprey Links golf course along with two or three hundred Canadas for the past few days. The course can be accessed via Cranberry road which is just a few miles south of North Bay off highway 11 B past the Clarion Hotel., (or just north of the town of Callander) The gull, an adult in winter plumage has been at the North Bay landfill site about ten miles north of North Bay, and east of Highway # 11. Greater Black-backed and a few Arctic gulls (Glaucous and Iceland) and are also present there - but more of the latter should be arriving shortly. North Bay is 3 1/2 hours north of Toronto, or 3 quick traffic lights. Toronto is several miles due north of Buffalo (or is it Rochester?). Yours etc. Dick Tafel 705 472-7907 _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]OFO News - October Issue From: Jean Iron <jeaniron(AT)sympatico.ca> Date: 13 Nov 2007 9:16am The 16 page October 2007 issue of OFO News is in the mail. Here are the highlights: ARTICLES 1. OFO 25th Anniversary Celebrations 1982 - 2007: This issue features several pages of colour photos of OFO's inaugural meeting in 1982 and the 25th Anniversary Celebration at Point Pelee on 13/14 October 2007. 2. The OFO Checklist: Michel Gosselin of the Canadian Museum of Nature uses the Ontario Bird Checklist to provide insights into bird systematics. This is an important ornithology lesson that will benefit both novice and expert birders. 3. Marbled Godwits On The Go: Ken Abraham of the Ministry of Natural Resources describes a cooperative study with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service/U.S. Geological Survey of tracking Marbled Godwits that breed in James Bay. Godwits are fitted with satellite or radio transmitters and colour bands. Tissue samples are taken for genetic and stable isotope analyses to answer questions about site and habitat use, dispersal, migration and wintering areas. Map shows the fall migration route taken by one Marbled Godwit from Akimiski Island. 4. Eastern Loggerhead Shrike Update: Jessica Steiner and Elaine Williams of Wildlife Preservation Canada report the breeding success of Loggerhead Shrikes in 2007. They also discuss the captive breeding program. They end with a concern that federal funding for the shrike recovery program is being severely cutback. Photo of two juvenile Loggerhead Shrikes on the Carden Alvar by Larry Kirtley. 5. Changes to AOU Checklist of North American Birds in 2007: Jim Rising, Canadian member of the Committee of Classification and Nomenclature, explains the changes affecting birds in Ontario that were announced in the 48th Supplement to the AOU Check-list published in the Auk. 6. OBRC Notes: Margaret Bain, Chair, reports on recent activities of the rarities committee. The big news is that birders can now count Trumpeter Swans seen in Ontario in 2007, but sightings before 2007 are not countable. The OBRC requests observers who submit photos also to provide written details, which greatly enhance the value of records. 7. The Land Between and the Carden Alvar: Ron Pittaway discusses the narrow contact zone where Paleozoic alvars meet Precambrian granite barrens along the southern edge of the Canadian Shield. This zone is called The Land Between. It is ecologically diverse and rich in birds. NOTES 1. Gulls At Niagara: A full page etching by Elizabeth Turner of gulls at Niagara Falls to set the mood for the OFO Gull Trip on Sunday 2 December 2007. 2. Paparazzi Birders: Ron Pittaway and Jean Iron ask if you are a paparazzo (singular) birder. The name Paparazzi birders has come into recent use describing those who stress birds by pursuing them too closely. 3. Carden Bluebirds: Herb Furniss reports that his bluebird boxes along Wylie Road on "the Carden Alvar in 2007 had their best breeding success in his 21 years". 4. Earthworms Threaten Forest Birds: Ron Pittaway reports that introduced earthworms threaten woodland birds because they eat the duff layer, which stores and slowly releases nutrients in healthy forests. When the duff layer disappears exposing bare ground, rain leaches away nutrients and woodlands become drier and less productive for birds and other plants and animals. 5. Juvenal, Juvenile and Immature: These often confusing terms are defined. 6. Morph or Phase: Jean Iron and Ron Pittaway explain why birders should use the correct term morph instead of the outdated "phase". 7. OFO Certificates of Appreciation: John Black, coordinator, lists the recipients of certificates in 2007 for their outstanding contributions to birds and the birding community. 8. OFO 25th Anniversary - Letters of Congratulations: A list of the letters congratulating OFO from the Governor General, Prime Minister, federal and provincial ministries, birding organizations and others. ENCLOSURES Two inserts with this issue. (1) List of 2008 field trips. (2) Membership renewal form and return envelope for 2008. Please renew promptly and include updates such as a new email address. Eleanor Beagan, Membership Secretary, encourages you to renew now using the enclosed envelope to ease her busy workload as Christmas approaches. This is our final issue as editors of OFO News. We thank the many authors, artists, photographers and map makers who supported us for 14 years and 42 issues. We wish the new editors continued success. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Golden Eagles, Tundra Swan - Ottawa West From: Tony Beck <beck.tony(AT)sympatico.ca> Date: 13 Nov 2007 9:55am Hello Ontbirders Following up on a tip from Rick Collins who alerted me to an adult Tundra Swan he observed yesterday at the Richmond Lagoons, I was able to relocate the bird this morning on the middle cell, at about 7:40am. The bird was still there when I left. However, it was absent when I returned at about 10:00am. Directions courtesy of Neily World: http://ca.geocities.com/ larry.neily(AT)rogers.com/marlboro1.htm At around 11:00am, two adult Golden Eagles soared over the corner of Cambrian Road and Moodie Drive, near the Trail Road Dump. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Bohemian Waxwings, Ottawa From: <Paul.Matthews(AT)statcan.ca> Date: 13 Nov 2007 1:32pm A flock of Bohemian Waxwings was by the Ottawa river south-east of Champlain Bridge today at lunch time. The group was spread out and numbers were very hard to estimate, but I'll guess 25-30. They were on the north side (occasionally) of the Ottawa River Parkway, in trees on the wide median, and especially on the south side. This was just east of the parking lot on the south-east side of the Champlain Bridge. The birds were apparently both feeding on berries and hawking insects, often low. One landed a few feet away from me on the ground. Weather: Today the sky was almost cloudless, the temperature rising from a low of 5.2 to a high of 11.8. Initially there was a very slight breeze from the NE, but by 10 am this had shifted to SE. Fortunately the wind remained mild, so the migration was not pushed too far to the north. Raptor Observations: Migration was minimal until 10 am, by which time the sunny skies had allowed for enough thermal generation to get a reasonable Red Tail movement going despite the less-than-ideal winds. This continued steadily for three hours, and then became a slow trickle. Non-raptor Observations: Several groups of Tundra Swans totalling 47 birds were seen flying over, and several other flocks were heard passing nearby. Predictions: Another mild day with temperatures starting at 11 and rising to 13. Cloudy with possible showers in the morning, cloudy with sunny periods in the afternoon. Winds mild to moderate initially from the SW becoming W early. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Don Wiens (wiens0730(AT)rogers.com) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. Winds were light east-southeast becoming moderate southeast in the afternoon. Raptor Observations: Much of the morning flight, which was considerable, was low and overhead with the movement overall being gradually pushed to the north as the day continued. A heavy push of Red-tails and Red-shoulders was seen during the late morning to about mid afternoon with the activity dropping off sharply thereafter. It was very nice to see so many juvenile Red-shoulders represented in today’s totals particularly this late in the season, although I believe the overall percentage this fall still favors the adults. This continues the trend of the last number of years of more adults than juveniles in the overall numbers for the species. Non-raptor Observations: Common Redpolls continue to be noted as singles or in small groups flying over the watch along with considerable numbers of Pine Siskins. Most noteworthy today though was a single flyover Evening Grosbeak. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Calvin Brennan (common_raven(AT)hotmail.com) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.smrr.net/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Golden Eagle (Ottawa), plus Barrow's Goldeneye From: Roger Clark <erogclark(AT)rogers.com> Date: 13 Nov 2007 8:25pm Hi Ontbirders, Around 2 p.m. today (13 November), there was an adult Golden Eagle hunting & perching in the area of the firing range along March Valley Road. It was flying for a brief time in the company of a Rough-legged Hawk. The Golden Eagle remained in the area for about an hour before flying off in an easterly direction. For good measure, a Barrow's Goldeneye was seen around noon from the Remic Rapids Lookout. Roger Clark (613) 744-0314 Directions: from the western end of Carling Avenue, turn north onto Herzberg Road, which becomes Terry Fox Drive. Turn right onto March Valley Road & drive a couple of kilometres scanning the open fields on the right. http://www.flickr.com/photos/rogclark/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Gannets at Van Wagner's Beach From: "Rick Lauzon" <rlauzon(AT)total.net> Date: 13 Nov 2007 7:38pm Two, possibly three, Northern Gannets continued to be seen as late as 4:30PM today (Tuesday). They fed together with a frenzy of gulls. I found it surprisingly difficult to pick out the dark birds while they were on the slightly choppy water at a distance. Fortunately, an adult Bald Eagle swooped into the mass of gulls and caused enough havoc to put all the birds into the air. Directions: To reach Van Wagners Beach, take the Centennial Parkway (Hwy.20) exit from the QEW in east Hamilton and proceed north to the North Service Rd., turn left and continue west as it turns into Van Wagners Road. Continue to the parking lots at either Hutch's Restaurant or the Lakeland Centre viewing tower and view the lake anywhere near here. No virus found in this outgoing message.
