Subject: [Ontbirds]Reesor Pond Update
From: "STAN LONG" <stan.long(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 17 Nov 2007 6:03am
It seems worthwhile to mention that for a month now, one Ross's Goose
and six Snow Geese have frequented Reesor Pond, these seen early this
morning accompanied by three Blue-morph Snow Geese. A Merlin flew
through this past week, also a female Peregrine, evidence of its
continued presence being found in a freshly killed, and partly
consumed, Mallard drake. Coots, Buffleheads, Pintails and Ruddy and
Black Ducks continue to show up as well as two to three thousand
Mallards. An estimated 6000 Canada Geese plus a family of four or five
Cackling Geese make up the larger crowd with spectacular comings and
goings throughout the day as they visit the surrounding cornfields. A
Great Blue Heron is seen daily while Tree sparrows, Common Redpolls
and American Pipits remain, but are few in numbers.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Cobourg Gannet still
From: Clive Goodwin <clivegoodwin(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 17 Nov 2007 6:43am
Margaret Bain just [9.30 a.m.] called to say the gannet is still off
Cobourg harbour. I append the edited parts of my post yesterday for
details.
An Immature N. Gannet has been visiting feeding flocks of loons, Red-
breasted Mergansers and gulls [but sometimes alone]. on the east side
of the main pier in Cobourg. The flocks come and go, and so does the
gannet. It was seen repeatedly yesterday, often after 30 minutes
wait, so it's a matter of sitting and waiting. You'll likely never
see a closer gannet.
Directions: Exit #401 at the eastern Cobourg exit [#474] and turn
south off the exit ramp. This is Division Street. Continue south
through town and Division ends in the main pier of the harbour, with
excellent views of the area.
Clive Goodwin

Subject: [Ontbirds]Algonquin Park Update: 17 November 2007
From: Ron Tozer <rtozer(AT)vianet.ca>
Date: 17 Nov 2007 9:50am
As expected in this non-seed crop year, the forest in Algonquin
Park seems to be getting ever quieter. Many finches, Black-capped
Chickadees and Red-breasted Nuthatches appear to have moved out.
Also in response to the poor to non-existent natural food situation,
feeders in Algonquin and nearby Muskoka have been reporting
good numbers of these birds. However, at least the finches often
appear to be moving through, with frequent changes in numbers
and species at feeders.
The following summary outlines reports received during the last
week for birds often sought by visiting birders here.
FINCHES:
Pine Grosbeak: regular at Visitor Centre feeder. Small numbers
away from feeders.
Purple Finch: two flying over (November 13). Most are gone.
Red Crossbill: one undocumented report.
White-winged Crossbill: no reports.
Common Redpoll: widespread in small numbers; regular at
the Visitor Centre and West Gate feeders. Often seen feeding
in weed patches.
Pine Siskin: two at Visitor Centre feeder (November 13).
American Goldfinch: one at Visitor Centre feeder, irregularly.
Evening Grosbeak: up to 20 at the Visitor Centre feeder;
occasional flyovers elsewhere.
BOREAL SPECIES:
Spruce Grouse: seen at Spruce Bog Boardwalk and Opeongo
Road, including displaying males apparently responding to
spring-like day length.
Black-backed Woodpecker: no reports.
Gray Jay: reported at Spruce Bog Boardwalk, Opeongo Road,
Visitor Centre, and Wolf Howl Pond.
Boreal Chickadee: reported at Spruce Bob Boardwalk. Try
Opeongo Road as well.
OTHER BIRDS OF NOTE:
Golden Eagle: single migrating adults were observed on
November 11 and 16.
Bohemian Waxwing: a few reported; most may have already
passed through.
BIRDERS:
Please let us know the date, number and location of birds you
observe when you visit Algonquin Park. This information is stored
in the Algonquin Visitor Centre database, and will help us to assist
other birders here. Thanks.
BIRDERS FROM THE BRANTFORD AREA: PLEASE SEND
ME THE DATE, LOCATION AND NUMBERS FOR YOUR
WOODPECKER, REDPOLL, AND CROSSBILL SIGHTINGS
FROM LAST WEEK IN ALGONQUIN.
Good birding.
Ron Tozer
Algonquin Park Naturalist (retired)
Dwight, Ontario
Directions:
Algonquin Park is three hours north of Toronto, via Highways 400, 11
and 60. Follow the signs, which start in Toronto on Highway 400. From
Ottawa, take Highway 17 to Renfrew, then follow Highway 60 to the
park. Kilometre markers along Highway 60 in the Park go from the West
Gate (km 0) to the East Gate (km 56). Permits and information are
available daily at both gates throughout the winter, including the
Algonquin Information Guide showing locations discussed here.
The Visitor Centre (km 43) is open on weekends (10 to 4) through the
winter. Recent bird sightings and information, plus feeders, can be found
there. Birders visiting during the week are welcome to contact staff for
birding information via the service entrance (right end of the building
as you face it from the parking lot).

Subject: [Ontbirds]Sandhill Cranes-Welland
From: "Jean & Bob" <bob.jean(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 17 Nov 2007 3:36pm
Hello All,
As of 11:30 AM this morning (Nov. 17), the 3 Sandhill Cranes can still be
found on McKenney Road. It looks like two adults with an immature. My wife
and I (along with her father and his wife) observed them this morning from
11:10-11:30 AM. They were observed in a field on the right hand side (west)
of McKenney Road just after Rose Ridge Farms. They were about 100 metres
from the road. A large sign for 13700 McKenney Road is on the left hand
side directly across from Rose Ridge Farms.
According to a teenager from the farm, the cranes have been there since the
spring.
Many thanks to Roy Sorgenfrei for the initial posting. A lifer for us.
Directions courtesy of Roy Sorgenfrei.
Directions coming from Niagara Falls-take Lyons Creek Rd. cut off from QEW
and head west on Lyons Creek Rd. Turn left at the first stop light heading
south on Montrose Rd. Turn right at Schisler Rd.(west) the turn left at
McKenney Rd.(south). Go about 1.5-2 miles up the road till you get to 13944
McKenney.
from Fort Erie take the Netherby Rd. cut of and head west on Netherby Rd.

Subject: [Ontbirds] 2 Pine Grosbeak, 6 Common Redpolls, 1 Hermit
thrush, along with 96 migrating raptors at Cranberry,
Whitby--Nov.17/07
From: "Doug Lockrey" <lockrey33(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 17 Nov 2007 5:38pm
After the "perfect" conditions yesterday, a Friday, for a hawk flight, brought
20+ observers, only a handful showed up to support Rayfield Pye on Saturday,
perhaps because the wind (albeit NW) was light.
Non-raptors included 2 PINE GROSBEAKS, 6 COMMON REDPOLLS, 1 HERMIT THRUSH, 1 FOX
SPARROW and 4 R-N PHEASANT.
Between 11am and 1pm Red-tailed Hawks started moving through. Indeed the raptor
count for the Cranberry Marsh Raptor Watch in southwest Whitby for Nov.17 was :
TTL-96, comprised of 8 Sharp-shinned, 1 Cooper's, 1 Red-shouldered, 85
Red-tailed, 1 Rough-legged.
After 92 consecutive days of counting the TTL is 10,736. We have had over 20% of
the days with "ideal" conditions, this not being so since 2001--undoubtedly
explaining why the count at CMRW had ranged from only 4900 to only 8400 since
2001.

Subject: [Ontbirds]NW York Region Birds
From: RON FLEMING <flemingron(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 17 Nov 2007 5:59pm
With Stan Long's update yesterday regarding southeast York region (i.e. Reesor
Pond), then Frank Pinella's report today from mid-central York region (re:
Golden Eagles over Richmond Hill), it seemed only fitting to complete the York
picture with a report from the northwest part of the region...
Keith Dunn of Keswick had two Northern Shrikes, a male Northern Harrier, and a
Red Bellied Woodpecker on The Queensway North (just south of Deer Park Road) in
Keswick today. Yesterday, also in Keswick, Keith had ten Snow Buntings and a
Merlin along Ravenshoe Road West, then a mixed flock of ten Bohemian Waxwings,
twelve Pine Grosbeaks and three American Robins all feeding on the same tree
where Glenwoods Avenue dead ends at the lake a few metres west of Lake Drive.
Last week in northeast Newmarket Mike Van den Tillaart had a single
Yellow-rumped Warbler in his yard on Waratah Avenue and a Northern Mockingbird
just southwest of Hwy. 404 and Davis Drive. Mike and I had another Mockingbird
today at Scanlon Creek in Bradford, as well as a single Wood Duck. At the north
end of Bathurst Street just northwest of Holland Landing we had a Northern
Shrike and, on nearby Hochreiter Road, we had a female Northern Harrier.
Last Saturday afternoon east of Aurora I watched a Raven interacting
aggressively with a Red-tailed Hawk in the sky just south of St. John's Sdrd.
and west of Kennedy Road. It was an interesting aerial confrontation that I'm
not sure either bird "won" - eventually the Red-tail casually circled away
southward while the raven flew east, gronking haughtily.
With gannets on the brain because of recent OFO posts, I couldn't help
thinking that the raven's big Roman nose and long wedged tail gave it the same
sort of jizz as a gannet -pointed at both ends.
Ron Fleming, Newmarket
Newmarket is north of Toronto and south of Barrie.
Keswick is north of Newmarket, along the south shore of Lake Simcoe.
Bradford (which is actually in Simcoe county) is just northwest of Newmarket,
as is Holland Landing. Aurora is directly south of Newmarket by a short
distance.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Gannet at Cobourg and Pacific Loon at Leslie St.
Spit
From: "Norman Murr" <normurr(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 17 Nov 2007 3:17pm
Good day
This was one of those days that it was great to be out. Very little wind and
mild compared to what it could have been.
Ian Cannell and I started out heading for Cobourg and we arrived at the end of
the pier at 7:25 am and had to wait a long agonizing 5 minutes before we spied
the Gannet flying towards us just before it made a quick stop and dove into the
water. We observed this bird from 7:30 am to 8:00 am as it some times flew as
close as a couple hundred yards away, dove and at times just sat on the water.
For the first time I was able to observe one in calm water and after each dive
it popped to the surface just like a cork, very amusing. We also spotted several
Common Loons offshore as well as 4 Bonaparte's Gulls and thousands of
Red-breasted Mergansers tooing and froing. The harbour itself had many Common
Mergansers.
We then headed back to Toronto and the Leslie Street Spit and another good move
that was and following are a few of the high lights.
Red-throated Loon, Common Loons and a close in your face Pacific Loon at 4:35
pm ( great end to a great day ) in the Yacht Club Bay, just past the second
gate, Many Waterfowl including all 3 Mergansers ( 150+ Hooded Mergansers calling
and displaying ), 18 Ring-necked Ducks, many Common Goldeneyes, Buffleheads,
Greater Scaup, Redheads plus A. Wigeons, 2 Cooper's Hawks, 2 N. Harriers and at
the Lighthouse a mixed flock of Snow Buntings and Lapland Longspurs flew in from
the lake.
There were surprisingly few Passerines on The Spit today, at least we came up
with few.
Another good day to be out there and as always with good company.
Directions:
Cobourg Harbour per Clive Goodwin.
Directions: Exit #401 at the eastern Cobourg exit [#474] and turn south off the
exit ramp. This is Division Street. Continue south through town and Division
ends in the main pier of the harbour, with excellent views of the area.
LESLIE STREET SPIT (TOMMY THOMPSON PARK) IN TORONTO
To get to "The Spit" from Queen and Yonge Streets. Take the Queen Street Car
#501 east to Leslie St. and walk south (about 2 km) or as far as you can go on
Leslie St. at Unwin Ave. and you will see the gate and signage. You may also
catch the Jones Bus #83 at the Donlands Subway Station or transfer to it at
Queen St. and Jones Ave. and take it to Leslie St. And Commissioner St. (on
Saturday only). By automobile you may drive to Lakeshore Blvd and Leslie St.
then south to The Spit.
You can park either on Leslie St. or Unwin Ave. You may also park in the parking
lot inside the main gate after 9 am. Be sure to observe the parking lot closing
time as if you are not out by then your auto will be locked in until the
following day. — THE PARKING LOT AND ALL GATES WILL BE LOCKED AT 4:30 pm and
there is no Van in the winter.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE:- The official hours for The Spit are 9 am to 4:30 pm (weekends and
holidays only of course) but the unofficial hours are sunup to sundown. To date
no one has questioned any birder, jogger, cyclist, etc. about the use of The
Spit from sunup to sundown.
The spit is only open on the weekends and on holidays, at other times you will
not be able to access the area. This area is extensive, 7 km to the tip, but be
prepared to walk more than that. The Spit is only open on the weekends and
holidays because they are still building it.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Gannet at Quelph Line
From: "Don Perks" <dperks0531(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 17 Nov 2007 8:00pm
At least 1 imm gannet was feding at Quelph Line at the lake there with
literally hundreds of mergies and maybe 120+ herring gulls.A real mad scene
and not that far out.An adult lesser black-backed gull was off Sioux Lookout
Pk .
>From the Q.E. take the Quelph Line south to the lake and walk to the waters
edge from the small lot. From Burlington along the Lakeshore Rd.(the old Hwy
2)drive east to the Quelph Line then right to the lot.Sioux Lookout is about
half a mile east on the Lakeshore Rd.
Good Luck.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Common Redpolls at West Perth Wetlands
From: "The Kuepfers" <cathy.kuepfer(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 17 Nov 2007 8:49pm
Today (Sat. Nov. 17) around 4:00 p.m. Carol Bauman, Michael Irwin and myself
saw a nice flock of Common Redpolls at the West Perth Wetlands (previously known
as the Mitchell Lagoons).
Mitchell is on Hwy 8 west of Stratford. In Mitchell, turn south at Wellington
and continue straight through to the lagoons.
