Subject: [Ontbirds]Toronto: Yellow-breasted Chat in Ashbridge's Bay
Park
From: "Bob Kortright" <bobwsk(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 20 Nov 2007 12:31pm
On the south side of the westernmost point of the park, on a Toronto Field
Naturalists walk led by Doug Paton, Carol Sellers pointed out a
Yellow-breasted Chat to the delight of the other 15 or so people on the walk
at 11:30 this morning, eclipsing the Ruddy Duck seen off the western tip as
the best bird of the walk. The chat was actively feeding on Euonomys
(Wahoo/Burning bush) fruit for part of the time.

Subject: [Ontbirds] Northern Gannet, Barrow's Goldeneye, Pacific Loon
- Gray Road, Stoney Creek
From: "Cheryl Edgecombe" <cheryle29(AT)cogeco.ca>
Date: 20 Nov 2007 2:37pm
On the lunch hour, Rob Dobos and myself were at the end of Gray Road with
excellent viewing conditions on the lake. There was a large feeding frenzy
on the lake not too far out and three Northern Gannets were swirling around
amongst the mergansers and gulls feeding out there. Nice looks at flying
birds and birds on the water.
The Barrow's Goldeneye and the Common x Barrow's Goldeneye were out at close
distance in front of Grays Road. We also had a number of loons swimming
near the frenzy. While scanning, I was able to get on a small dark loon
which after careful study we surmized to be a Pacific Loon. The bird was at
a distance but it was swimming with some Red-throated Loons for a good
comparison of size, bill structure, stature and colouring. The bird was
preening at first but then started to dive and moved out further but may
come back in again, conditions are ideal with good lighting and calm waters
for looking out on the lake today.
Other birds of note included 2 Glaucous Gulls (1 imm. & 1 adult), Horned
Grebe, flocks of 17 and then 30 Common Redpolls.
Directions:
>From the Toronto direction exit the QEW highway at Centenial Parkway on the
south end of the Burlington Skyway. Drive under the QEW and drive a short
distance to the North Service Road, turn right and drive along the Service
Road to Drake Drive (just past the Gray Road overpass). Turn left on Drake
and drive the short distance to Frances Avenue and turn left, drive to Gray
Road and turn right and drive to the lake.
Cheers,
Cheryl Edgecombe

Subject: [Ontbirds]Pine Warbler in Ancaster
From: "Mike Street" <mikestreet1(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 20 Nov 2007 1:06pm
This afternoon an adult male Pine Warbler was looking for insects in
the tree our feeders hang from. It stayed a few minutes and then left,
heading east. Although not the latest I've seen a Pine Warbler in this
part of Ontario it was a bit of a surprise. Perhaps it knows about the
cold snap that is coming.
Location: Just easst of Fiddler's Green Rd. near Hwy. 403, Ancaster.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Possible third winter SBGU in Renfrew County
From: Chris <cmichener(AT)renc.igs.net>
Date: 20 Nov 2007 12:39pm
Hi All,
A bird looking very much like a 3rd winter Slaty-backed Gull appeared at the
Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre (http://www.ovwrc.com/) near Pembroke.
To view some images of the bird, go to:
http://www.renc.igs.net/~cmichener/pafnhtml/SBGU2007.html
The possible SBGU was below the garbage on the lower flats, which is visible
with a scope, and it was also on the recently dumped garbage.
To enter the landfill as a guest, call ahead (613-735-7537) to the landfill
and ask for Elizabeth Graham. She has some rules and wants everyone to
check in at the entry office. You wait for the green light and then drive
up on the scales to check in. The best time to visit is between 11 AM and 1
PM. You shouldn't leave your car unless you are wearing certified safety
gear. It is also a good idea to stay in your car and use it as a blind,
driving near the gulls very slowly. Scope from the window, although
binoculars are sometimes enough. Other gulls at the landfill are HEGU,
GBBG, RBGU and GLGU.
To get to the landfill, drive north of Eganville staying on Hwy 41 for about
14 km., then turn left on B-Line Rd. Go about 2 km. travelling around a
curve to the left and at the end of the curve turn left onto County Rd 56,
also called Woito Station Road. The landfill is on your right about 3 km.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Birds Found, Carden Alvar
From: "eleanor" <keewellman(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 20 Nov 2007 3:14pm
Today on Wylie Road and Alvar Road I saw approximately 6 Common Redpolls in a
couple of locations, Pine Grosbeaks in 2 places on Wylie Rd. and also feeding in
the trees in front of the Presbyterian Church in Kirkfield, raven and crows
feeding on a few pieces and the skin of a deer and a flock of about 35 Bohemian
Waxwings on Alvar Road. No other bird life was seen.
>From the centre of Kirkfield go north on County Road 6 passing under the Lift
Lock on the Trent Canal and drive about 2 ½ km further north to where the road
curves left or west. On this curve and on your right is McNamee Rd, turn right
here onto McNamee and drive east for about 300 yards and you will be at Wylie
Road. This road is about 9 ½ km long ending at Alvar Rd (a T intersection).

Subject: [Ontbirds]Boreal Chickadee In Sault Ste. Marie
From: Robert Knudsen <robert.knudsen(AT)shaw.ca>
Date: 20 Nov 2007 2:36pm
Hi All,
Today we had the first Boreal Chickadee visit two spruce trees on the
apartment property where we have lived for 14 years. Is this an indication
that Boreal Chickadee may be leaving the boreal forest? Other birds visiting
our feeders include 15 to 25 Pine Grosbeaks, 2 White-breasted Nuthatches, 2
Red-breasted Nuthatches, 5 to 8 Common Redpolls, 2 Downy Woodpeckers, 2
Hairy Woodpeckers and 1 Pileated Woodpecker.
We live at #117 - 23 Terry Fox Place in Sault Ste. Marie. Take Hwy 17 (Trunk
Road) to Dacey Rd. and turn south. Turn left at Terry Fox Place and go to
the furthest apartment building to the southeast. Our feeders are on the
ground floor at the southeast end of the building.

Weather:
The day was characterized by heavy cloud and limited visibility, with
intermittent fine drizzle falling. Winds were mild to moderate from the
North, suddenly shifting to South at about 1:30 pm. Temperatures ranged
from 11.0 to 12.7.
Raptor Observations:
An adult Peregrine Falcon was enjoying a fresh duck breakfast in the "eagle
tree" when the count began, only to be turfed by one of the local adult
Bald Eagles. It managed to hang on to its meal however. Both of the
Rough-legs were light plumage.
Non-raptor Observations:
About 500 American Goldfinches were counted passing (did I mention it was a
slow day?). A small group made up of 6 White-throated Sparrows, 2 American
Tree Sparrows, a Cardinal pair, and a one of our very vocal resident
Carolina Wrens foraged around the tower together, brightening the day a
little.
Predictions:
Rain all day. Temperature falling from 14 to 9 through the day. Winds
moderate from the South becoming North in the afternoon.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Winter Birding in Canada -- where is Ontario?
From: Blake Maybank <maybank(AT)ns.sympatico.ca>
Date: 20 Nov 2007 11:29am
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Hi Ontbirds;
Winter birding has become a very popular=20
activity among Canadian birders. The origins of=20
this slightly insane behaviour apparently date=20
from southern Ontario in the 50's and 60's, but=20
the sport's appeal really took off with the=20
promotion afforded it by Gerry Bennett in the=20
1980's, through his "Birdfinding in Canada" newsletter.
Winter Birding remains popular today. The=20
winter period comprises the three months of=20
December through February, matching the reporting=20
period of "North American Birds". Winter Birding=20
web pages are maintained for nine of ten=20
provinces in Canada, as follows, from east to west:
http://tinyurl.com/2jqo5p Newfoundland and Labrador
http://tinyurl.com/2u2ulg Nova Scotia
http://tinyurl.com/3bkhwz Prince Edward Island
http://tinyurl.com/36hpe4 New Brunswick
http://tinyurl.com/2ngu7n Qu=E9bec
???? Ontario
http://tinyurl.com/yjtx52 Manitoba
http://tinyurl.com/2qde59 Saskatchewan
http://tinyurl.com/yke4sl Alberta
http://tinyurl.com/33bmzc British Columbia
But Ontario, where the activity began, does not=20
have a winter birding page. Disappointing, and=20
slightly ironic. The rest of the provinces are=20
not keeping track as a competition (because BC=20
always wins), but simply to encourage birders to=20
explore their home provinces during a time of=20
year when many would prefer to linger=20
indoors. A couple of provinces have even=20
started the DOWL, the Dead Of Winter List,=20
tracking all sightings during the month of February.
There are also winter birding pages for:
http://tinyurl.com/y45kl5 French islands of Saint-Pierre et Michelon
http://tinyurl.com/2sprtm Iceland
http://tinyurl.com/2wp4sa Ottawa / Gatineau region
So, does anyone wish to start an Ontario winter=20
birding page? The rest of Canada's provinces=20
would love to have you join the party, which begins in less than two weeks.
Good (winter) birding,
----------------------------------------------------------------------------=
