From: "Cheryl Edgecombe" <cheryle29(AT)cogeco.ca>
Date: 23 Nov 2007 8:05am
On Friday, November 23rd, 2007 this is the HNC Birding Report:
KING EIDER
HARLEQUIN DUCK
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE
PACIFIC LOON
NORTHERN GANNET
PURPLE SANDPIPER
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE
BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER
PINE WARBLER
BOHEMIAN WAXWING
PINE GROSBEAK
Brant
Greater Scaup
Surf Scoter
White-winged Scoter
Black Scoter
Long-tailed Duck
Common Goldeneye
Common x Barrow's Goldeneye
Red-throated Loon
Common Loon
Horned Grebe
Red-necked Grebe
Northern Goshawk
Golden Eagle
Bonaparte's Gull
Iceland Gull
Lesser Black-backed Gull
Glaucous Gull
Northern Shrike
Common Raven
Purple Finch
Common Redpoll
Pine Siskin
Another great week on the lake watch here in Hamilton. The three NORTHERN
GANNETS seem to be traveling around the west end of the lake from feeding
frenzy to frenzy with the birders traveling along with them. This week they
were seen from Rattray Marsh, Guelph Line in Burlington, off the Burlington
Ship Canal, off of Van Wagner's Beach and off of Gray's Road most recently.
While viewing one of these feeding frenzy's this week, a numbers of Loons
were spotted including Common, Red-throated and one PACIFIC LOON last
Monday. Another PACIFIC LOON was seen off of Arkendo Park in Oakville last
Sunday. Other birds viewed on the lake this week were a couple of flybys of
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, last weekend when winds were northeast, flyby of
KING EIDER, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE off of Grays Road along with the Common x
Barrow's Goldeneye, Greater Scaup, all three scoters, Long-tailed Duck, and
Common Goldeneye. A Horned Grebe was seen out in the masses on Monday.
Gulls are starting to come in for the winter. A few Bonaparte's Gulls were
seen yesterday in the gale, but Iceland and Glaucous Gull have also been
reported this week. Our first PURPLE SANDPIPER was reported on the rocks at
Fifty Point last Saturday but only stayed for a couple of hours.
Scattered along the lakeshore other waterfowl have been noted such as
Red-necked Grebes at Paletta/Shoreacres, a Brant down at the end of West
River Road, a female HARLEQUIN DUCK at the same location off of Bronte
Bluffs Park and further east a pair of HARLEQUIN DUCKS were seen at the end
of Mississauga Road and Saddington Park in Mississauga.
Winter finches and other wanderers are about too. Up to a dozen PINE
GROSBEAKS were seen last weekend at Hyde Tract located on Safari Road just
east of Kirkwall Road. Unfortunately hunters and dogs seem to be there on
the weekend so be cautious. Up at the Guelph Arboretum, PINE GROSBEAKS and
BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS have both been seen in the crab apple trees there however
a good spot for them seems to be the Conifer Collection where they are
feasting on juniper berries. Single BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were reported from
Millgrove Side Road and flying over the Valley Inn this week. A small flock
of Pine Siskins were seen in Flamborough this week and at the Arboretum.
A female Purple Finch as seen at a feeder in the 16 mile creek/Upper Middle
Road area in Oakville. Common Redpolls seem to be moving in this week as
well. Although only a few feeder reports, along the lake on Monday sizable
flocks of 17 and 30 were seen.
Northern Shrikes seem to be on the move in numbers with reports from Rock
Chapel, Dundas, Carlisle and Flamborough this week.
In odds and sods, a couple late birds potential highlights for a winter
list, a PINE WARBLER was seen briefly east of Fiddler's Green Rd. near Hwy.
403, Ancaster. A BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was seen again at Burloak Park.
Common Raven and a Northern Goshawk were also reported from Guelph
Arboretum. A Northern Goshawk was seen at the Westfield Heritage Centre on
Kirkwall Road. A Golden Eagle was spotted on the north side of Glen Morris
yesterday. Lesser Black-backed Gulls were reported from Lakeshore Park and
from a field at Peter's Corners (Hwy 5 & 52)this week.
Winter listing starts next weekend, please report your sightings of rarities
but also date late! birds.
Good birding

Subject: [Ontbirds]NO Purple Sandpipers, Ottawa
From: <Paul.Matthews(AT)statcan.ca>
Date: 23 Nov 2007 11:24am
Hello Ontbirders
To no great surprise, a visit to Britannia Pier today at around 9:30 AM
did not produce any of the purple sandpipers that were reported
yesterday and the day before. The winter storm is over, and today's
temperatures would certainly be an incentive to a southbound migrant to
continue its journey. It should be noted that purple sandpipers could
conceivably have been "hiding" on the northernmost side of the western
jetty that juts far out into the Ottawa River, which is not visible from
shore.
On the plus side, there was a large flock (100+) of Bohemian Waxwings in
my neighbourhood on Parkglen near the intersection with Woodroffe.
Directions to Britannia Pier: From the 417 (Queensway), take Pinecrest
north. Cross Carling Ave (Pinecrest becomes Greenview) and drive to the
parking lot at the end of the road. Proceed on foot north to the Pier.
Paul Matthews, Ottawa

Subject: [Ontbirds]Pembroke: Slaty-backed Gull
From: "Bruce Di Labio" <bruce.dilabio(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 23 Nov 2007 8:33am
Hi Everyone
Chris Michener phoned from the landfill site to report that the 3rd
winter Slaty-backed Gull found on November 20th at the Ottawa Valley Waste
Recovery Centre near Pembroke was still present today at 10:35am.
good birding, Bruce
To enter the landfill as a guest, call ahead (613-735-7537) to the landfill
and ask for Elizabeth Graham. She has some rules and wants everyone to
check in at the entry office. You wait for the green light and then drive
up on the scales to check in. The best time to visit is between 11 AM and 1
PM. You shouldn't leave your car unless you are wearing certified safety
gear. It is also a good idea to stay in your car and use it as a blind,
driving near the gulls very slowly. Scope from the window, although
binoculars are sometimes enough. Other gulls at the landfill are HEGU,
GBBG, RBGU and GLGU.
To get to the landfill, drive north of Eganville staying on Hwy 41 for about
14 km., then turn left on B-Line Rd. Go about 2 km. travelling around a
curve to the left and at the end of the curve turn left onto County Rd 56,
also called Woito Station Road. The landfill is on your right about 3 km.

Subject: [Ontbirds] Selasphorus hummingbird species still present-
November 23
From: "Sarah Rupert" <tanager(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 23 Nov 2007 12:11pm
Hi All
Just wanted to let everyone know that the selasphorus hummingbirds species
reported by Paul Pratt yesterday is still present today. I popped out to
Kingsville around noon today and within five minutes of arriving at 95 Queen
Street, I was able to watch the bird pop in and out of the feeder several
times over a 15 minute period. It seemed completely unphased by the
excavation going on near the feeder and I was able to get really great
looks. Finally, a rare bird in the area that I'm actually free from all
other duties to get out and see!
I will be working at the park tomorrow - if anyone sees the hummingbird
tomorrow, feel free to give me a call - 519-322-5700 x10. I'll do my best
to keep up to date on the sightings.
Queen St is located in the town of Kingsville - as Paul indicated, it run
north and south and is one block west of Division Road, off of Cty Rd 20
(Main Street).
Good birding everyone!

Subject: [Ontbirds] AERIAL RAPTOR CONFRONTATION, many songbirds at
Cranberry, southwest Whitby, Nov.23/07
From: "Doug Lockrey" <lockrey33(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 23 Nov 2007 4:54pm
Cranberry Marsh, southwest Whitby, Ontario
Daily Raptor Counts: Nov 23, 2007 --31 total (see table below)
Observation time: 9am to 1pm
Official Counter: Doug Lockrey
Observers: Alan Woods, Jerry Ball, Jim McKnight, Jim Skene, Anne Anthony
(back from seeing over 400 birds in Ethiopia), Jim Fairchild (great to see
him recovering), Karl Jennewein
Weather: very cold (-10C, "warming" to -4C), rising BP, light, then medium
NW winds;TUV=2
Observations: We enjoyed a 10-minute battle royale over the wetlands, as a
male Northern Harrier did not like the presence of a Peregrine Falcon; then
a Sharp-shinned Hawk elected to "take it out" on Jim McK. as it swooped from
behind very low, ticking Jim's shoulder as it doubled back to perch.
Non-raptor Observations: Some of the following will be "wanted" by upcoming
winter bird-listers":
1 C.Redpoll, several Am.pipits, golden-crowned kinglet, red-breasted
nuthatch, hairy woodpecker, cedar waxwings, tagged Trumpeter Swan,
red-winged blackbirds, white-throated sparrow, fox sparrow, swamp sparrow,
song sparrow, juncos and tree sparrows, imm. northern shrike, among others.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Yellow-breasted Chat@Ashbridge's Park
From: Wayne Renaud <wayne(AT)renaudwebber.com>
Date: 23 Nov 2007 5:55pm
Around 12:30 pm today David Hallett and I, with the help of a few other
birders who had seen it earlier, easily found the Chat feeding quietly amid
a sea of berries in sw-facing inlet at the very sw point of the Park. It
appear quite healthy and fed low in branches of what I think are buckthorns
or beneath the branches, gorging on berries. The brilliant yellow breast
and orange-yellow throat were had to miss. We passed Jean Iron who was on
her way to photograph the bird.
Other late fall migrants included 4 Yellow-rumped Wablers, 15+ American
Pipits and a Hermit Thrush. [ps: we also found 4 Killdeers at the mouth of
Mimico Creek in E. Humberview Park opposite the boat ramp from the parking
lot].
Directions:
as previously posted, the park is located off the south end Coxwell (and
just south of Lakeshore w.) and at the west of the west beaches. Be sure
you take the 10-minute hike to most nw part of the park.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Northern Gannets Oshawa Harbour
From: " Stu Williams" <stwilliams(AT)trebnet.com>
Date: 23 Nov 2007 11:05am
The two Northern Gannets found at Oshawa Harbour yesterday by Hans Holbrook
(visitor from Maryland) were still present today (11:00 a.m.) but were
"fishing" a bit further offshore, probably 500 to 600 yards. The best
viewing point would be at the end of the Oshawa Harbour pier but were also
visible from the beach. Dress for a strong wind in about 23 degrees of F.
temp today. Patience is needed as they were not evident until about 45
minutes after arrival but with a scope you should be able to spot them
drifting on the lake surface. A feeding frenzy did bring one of the Gannets
to within 50 meters of the pier as I was leaving.
Good birding, Stu Williams

Hello Ontbirders
Made a quick trip up to Pembroke and after some searching Mike Tate and
I observed the Slaty-backed Gull at around 1:50pm. It flew in from the south
in a large flock of gulls. In total, there were around 300-350 gulls in and
around the landfill site. We also saw a few 1st winter Glaucous Gulls.

Weather:
Sunny conditions prevailed throughout the day today with light to moderate
but brisk west-northwest winds. Temperatures barely made it to the plus
side Celsius.
Raptor Observations:
Most of the birds recorded were Red-tails with a smattering of other birds
and the seemingly daily 6-pack of Golden Eagles. Perhaps most noteworthy
was that not a single Rough-leg was tallied.
Non-raptor Observations:
Today was another big day for Tundra Swans with large and small groups
moving through all day long. You would guess that thousands must have moved
through the region on a day like today. Sandhill Cranes were also well
represented with groups of 40+, 30+ and one small group of four. Early
morning wanderings dug up a very late Scarlet Tanager.

Subject: [Ontbirds] Fifty Point, Grimsby - Nov 23 - Purple
Sandpipers, Cackling Geese etc.
From: "Holden Family" <holden.ontbirds(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 23 Nov 2007 6:22pm
Birders,
Today at Fifty Point C.A. in Grimsby, my dad and I had:
2 Purple Sandpipers on the eastern most rock point (closest to Kelson rd.)
2 Northern Shrike's (one adult, one young bird - actually chased each other
and gave loud calls)
2 Cackling Geese - in the main pond.. with one un-identified Canada/Cackler
Later in the day, we ran into Barry Cherriere and Kevin McLaughlin at the
end of Gray's rd. in Stoney Creek. We saw the hybrid Barrow's X Common
Goldeneye, and then moved down the beach closer to Van Wagner's where we had
a Black-legged Kittiwake close to shore after a feeding frenzy.
Pictures of almost all of these birds can be seen at the top of my "What's
New" section on my website - link here:

If anyone likes to try to identify Cackling vs. Canada Geese, pictures of
the mystery bird can be see seen on the 2nd Link (on the whats new page)
If replying to this e-mail, please send it to peregrine13(AT)gmail.com as I do
not use this e-mail for anything but ontbirds posts.
Good Birding!!

50 Point Conservation Area:
QEW Niagara, exit at Fifty Road (between Fruitland Road and Casablanca Road
Grimsby) towards the lake (north) and follow the signs to Fifty
Point Conservation Area. There is an entrance fee.
The pond with the Cackling Geese is in the centre of the park, the Shrike's
were in this same area around the north part of the pond.
