Observation start time: 09:00:00
Observation end time: 15:30:00
Total observation time: 6.5 hours
Official Counter: Bob Pettit
Observers: Jim McCoy
Weather:
Very sunny with deep blue sky. Sky where everything disappears at a short
distance. Even large planes were not visible at lower altitudes. At higher
altitudes the sun sparkled on their surfaces. Contrails were non-existent
on any high plane until about 2 pm. Visibility 28 miles or more. Wind was
NNW swinging to West at the end of the period with speeds upwards to 19
km/hr and ending at 6 km/hr. Barometer steady 30.34 in of Hg. Temperature
-2.5 to +2.3 C.
Raptor Observations:
Most birds were Red-tails. The flight was sluggish with many individuals
landing and perching for several minutes to over an hour then moving on.
Many were actively searching for food while passing over the marsh close to
the vegetation. High birds passed either quickly or in small groups 2-6 in
a thermal moving slowly westward. Most birds were difficult to find or see
except those noted on the eastern and northern horizons. One rough-legged
light morph counted.
Non-raptor Observations:
Many Tundra Swans perhaps 150-200 in small groups very high over the tower
or out over the lake south of the tower with most heading southeast or
eastward. Coots, a few shovelers with mallards being the dominate species.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Rufous Hummingbird in Kingsville
From: Paul Pratt <prairie(AT)netcore.ca>
Date: 24 Nov 2007 1:32pm
The adult female Rufous Hummingbird is still present in Kingsville at
95 Queen Street. This morning it was banded by Carl Pascoe and
Rachel Powless and quickly resumed its frequent visits to the feeder.
The feeder is attached to a window on the south side of the house and
is easily visible from the front yard. Please stay away from the
construction that is taking place on the same side of the property.
Queen Street is a north-south street located one block west and 2 1/2
blocks south of the main intersection (Main and Division) in Kingsville.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Black-headed Gull and Yellow Warbler at Fort Erie
From: Marcia Jacklin <mjacklin(AT)brocku.ca>
Date: 24 Nov 2007 2:13pm
Hi
Sorry to steal Jim Pawlicki's thunder but he located a Black-headed Gull along
the Niagara River Parkway at Fort Erie as he was leading a trip for the Buffalo
Ornithological Society. He first located it opposite Wintermude Street. We just
missed but we saw a YELLOW WARBLER at that spot.
We continued with Jim and the BOS group along the Parkway to Central where he
relocated the BLACK-HEADED GULL. This is a pale bird, no black on the cap and a
bright orange bill.
We also had a Black Scoter at the mouth of the Niagara River at Lake Erie and a
Red-necked Grebe and 3 Horned Grebes opposite Gilmore Road.
Marcie Jacklin
Fort Erie is located at the mouth of the Niagara River at Lake Erie and
easily accessed from the Niagara Parkway from the north and QEW from the west.

At about 10 this morning after talking to several people coming back that
had not see the Chat this morning I went out any way to try my luck and sure
enough the Yellow Breasted Chat was there right out in the open. It was
feeding close to the path near a ladder with a life ring at the south west
corner of the park.

From: "Eleanor Beagan" <etbeagan(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 24 Nov 2007 11:43am
The Yellow-breasted Chat gave great views this noon hour as it fed in the
Euonymus bushes.(1:30 P.M.) It remained well hidden when we first arrived,
but eventually emerged when a pair of Cardinals arrived to feed on the
ground on the southwest side. The Chat remained very visible while it fed,
but it takes much patience to wait for it between feedings.
Directions:
Ashbridge's Bay Park is at the foot of Coxwell Ave. in eastern Toronto, east
of the Don Valley Parkway. Exit south off Lake Shore Blvd at Coxwell, and
drive to the parking lot in front of the yacht club. Take the southwest path
as far as it goes and be prepared to enjoy.

Stoney Creek
From: "Norman Murr" <normurr(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 24 Nov 2007 12:57pm
Today Ian Cannell and I stopped at Gray Road in Stoney Creek and while I was
scanning for Loons Ian spotted the male Barrows Goldeneye swimming not far off
shore with Long-tailed Ducks and we also counted 16 Red-throated Loons, close in
to several hundred meters out, some in groups of 3 and 5 birds.
We did not scope off Greens Road or Sayers Park but probably more Red-throated
Loons were off these areas as well.
Also present here and off Greens Road as usual were all 3 Scoter species and as
we turned to leave a Cooper's Hawk flew over us at roof top height ( single
storey houses :>)) ).
Directions:-
GRAY ROAD, LAWRENCE SAYER’S PARK and GREEN ROAD IN STONEY CREEK
>From the Toronto direction exit the QEW highway at Centenial Parkway on the
south end of the Burlington Skyway. Drive under the QEW and drive a short
distance to the North Service Road, turn right and drive along the Service Road
to Drake Drive (just past the Gray Road overpass). Turn left on Drake and drive
the short distance to Frances Avenue and turn left, drive to Gray Road and turn
right and drive to the lake.
Alternately you can turn right at Frances Avenue and drive to Green Road, turn
left at Green Road and drive to the lake.
For Lawrence Sayer’s Park you can turn right off Gray Road just before you get
to the lake and drive to the park (obey the no parking signs here as others have
received a ticket). Or you can drive straight down Drake to the park from the
Service Road.

This morning between 11:00a.m. and noon a Peregrine Falcon flew about the top of

From: "Christina Lewis" <hagenius(AT)primus.ca>
Date: 24 Nov 2007 6:52pm
Hello Ontbirds people,
The SLATY-BACKED GULL discovered by Chris Michener and Manson Fleguel on 20
November was still present today (24 November) at the Ottawa Valley Waste
Recovery Centre south of Pembroke, ON. It was resting and preening, as well
as actively feeding on the garbage at the landfill, and was occasionally
aggressive towards the other gulls (many Herring, as well as 3 Glaucous, and
a few immature Great Black-backed). Bob Bracken & I as well as a few others
(parties from Ottawa, Gatineau, and Toronto) had good views of the bird in
flight as well as on the ground. The bird was present from at least 10:00 AM
until when we left at 12:30 PM.
****PLEASE NOTE**** THE LANDFILL CLOSED ON SUNDAYS!!

Subject: [Ontbirds]Possible third winter SBGU in Renfrew County
Hi All,
A bird looking very much like a 3rd winter Slaty-backed Gull appeared at the
Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre (http://www.ovwrc.com/) near Pembroke.
To view some images of the bird, go to:
http://www.renc.igs.net/~cmichener/pafnhtml/SBGU2007.html
The possible SBGU was below the garbage on the lower flats, which is visible
with a scope, and it was also on the recently dumped garbage.
To enter the landfill as a guest, call ahead (613-735-7537) to the landfill
and ask for Elizabeth Graham. She has some rules and wants everyone to
check in at the entry office. You wait for the green light and then drive
up on the scales to check in. The best time to visit is between 11 AM and 1
PM. You shouldn't leave your car unless you are wearing certified safety
gear. It is also a good idea to stay in your car and use it as a blind,
driving near the gulls very slowly. Scope from the window, although
binoculars are sometimes enough. Other gulls at the landfill are HEGU,
GBBG, RBGU and GLGU.
To get to the landfill, drive north of Eganville staying on Hwy 41 for about
14 km., then turn left on B-Line Rd. Go about 2 km. travelling around a
curve to the left and at the end of the curve turn left onto County Rd 56,
also called Woito Station Road. The landfill is on your right about 3 km.

Weather:
Today conditions were dominated by mirky sunshine shrouded by a high layer
of cloud cover. Winds were light to moderate southwest.
Raptor Observations:
There was very little movement recorded but one notable sighting was a
second-year Bald Eagle with a radio transmitter attached to its upper back.
Non-raptor Observations:
Barely 10 minutes into the count, a juvenile Northern Gannet appeared at
the mouth of the Brownstown Channel less than a half mile southeast of the
watch area. It was in view for several minutes before heading towards the
south end of the park and out of sight. This is the fifth record for this
species for the count and the sixth record for LEMP.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Black-legged Kittiwake at Point Pelee
From: "Todd Pepper" <tandjpepper(AT)cogeco.ca>
Date: 24 Nov 2007 4:08pm
A Black-legged Kittiwake was seen off the Tip of Point Pelee (yes, there is one
back) at approximately 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon, November 24th. The size
difference, black wing tips and unmarked bill were quite obvious as it flew with
the Ring-billed Gulls.

Subject: [Ontbirds] Algonquin Park - Pine Grosbeak, Northern Shrike,
Among Others (Nov. 24, 2007)
From: "Lev Frid" <lev.frid(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 24 Nov 2007 2:56pm
Today I was birding the West Side of Algonquin Park. First on the list
was the Spruce Bog Boardwalk, which produced one GRAY JAY at the end
of the trail. At the Visitor Centre, two PINE GROSBEAKS, a male and a
female, were observed below the feeders from the Upper observation
deck, and a few RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES and COMMON REDPOLLS at the
feeders. At Opeongo road, I observed 10 PINE GROSBEAKS fly overhead
and land in a White Pine. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was also observed at the
entrance of Opeongo Road. BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES were also present in
all three locations in decent numbers.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Niagara River Sub-par
From: Mark Cranford <mark.cranford(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 24 Nov 2007 9:23pm
I'd don't want to rain on anyone's parade but the gull numbers on the
River today were way below expectations. Birding with Ron Scovell, we
had a single Glaucous Gull and very low numbers of Herring, Ring-billed
and Bonaparte's Gull. We started at Niagara on the Lake about 8:30 am
and left around 4:00 pm after covering most of the river to Fort Erie
and back. Apologies to the memory of Gordon Bellerby but we ignored the
fly-past (or was it fly-by). We may have spent too long searching for
the Black-headed Gull but total numbers of Bonaparte's Gull could have
been less than 1000 and Herring Gull much lower. 3 Red-throated Loons
at the gazebo at Niagara on the Lake along with a good numbers and
diversity at the base of Fruit Land Road in Stony Creek were our
high-lights.
Looking forward more optimistic reports but that is what we had today.
Directions and strategies for birding the Niagara River refer to Clive
Goodwin's still accurate Bird-Finding Guide to Ontario.

Huron.

Almost an instant replay of yesterday's flight with 65 birds total. Today's
highlight was 2 Golden Eagles on the deck...a nice reward for Colin and
Wayne who were the only ones to brave the weather and make it to do the
hawkwatch!! Also a couple of Roughlegs. The majority were Redtails with 59.
