Subject: [Ontbirds]Purple Sandpiper-Port Burwell-Nov.25/07
From: ross snider <ross_snider(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 25 Nov 2007 8:40am
Hi all,
There was a Purple Sandpiper in the Port Burwell harbour at 10:30 this
morning. The bird was on the built up sand spit at the entrance to the harbour
on the west side. There is an extensive rock breakwall to the south of the
harbour, accessed from the parking lot on west side, where it may well end up
and be difficult to locate.
Directions: Port Burwell is located between Long Point and Port Bruce on Lake
Erie. Access from the 401 would be Hwy. 19(Plank Line) through Tillsonburg. On
the west side of the harbour there
is a parking lot past the Provincial park entrance.
Ross Snider
Ingersoll, Ont.

This morning between 8:30 & 9:30 I saw 2 N. Gannets from the end of the
Oshawa Harbour pier. They both flew from the east past the pier and on
towards Bonnebrae Pt. The first one circled around near the buoy and came in
fairly close. There was also a Red-necked Grebe in the canal.

So slow I enjoyed watching eye floaters between raptors sightings. Winds
too strong for sustained flight over tower and marsh. If there were many
birds they had to be north of vision. Both Coops were directly over the
tower by 15 feet. Tails north and south and over the tower.
Non-raptor Observations:
Very few birds of any kind. Usual suspects of fall mix.
Predictions:
Rain/Snow mix?

Subject: [Ontbirds]Oshawa-Whitby N. Gannet Nov 25 07 P.M
From: "Craig McLauchlan" <csam(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 25 Nov 2007 1:25pm
Excuse my spelling and Grammar, I am Dyslexic thank you.
At 2:30 this afternoon my self and others watched 1 N. Gannet from the end of
the Oshawa Harbour pier flying west.
I then drove to Whitby Harbour wear at 2:55 I saw a N. Gannet (witch I am
assuming is the same bird ) fly west and by 3:00 out of sight .
So to answer the question from a birder put to Bev and I this morning (will at
the Oshawa Harbour ) , that a N. Gannet could fly from Cobourg to Oshawa in a
hour, that wood be "probly not"! (or no) it tuck 25 mints to fly 6 miles from
Oshawa Harbour to Whitby Harbour, Cobourg to Oshawa is 34 miles (ill levee the
math up to you all)
Great bird though!!
Direction:
In Oshawa take the Simcoe St. Exit (#417) south down to the
harbour.
Whitby Harbour Exit # 410 and south on Brock st to the harbour .

Daily Raptor Count: Nov 25, 2007 (see table below)
I WISH TO SINCERELY THANK ALL OF THE OVER 100 PEOPLE WHO HAVE HELPED AT THE
PLATFORM, WHETHER FOR 1 HOUR, 20 HOURS,--- UP TO 300+ HOURS. It would be
great to have all assembled on Nov.30 or Dec.1!!
Observation time: 9am to 1pm
Official Counter: Doug Lockrey
Observers: Brian Steele, Greg Stuart and 15 others who helped for short
times, and many visitors
Weather: blue sky alternating with cloud-cover; 0 to 2C; rising BP replaced
by falling BP;
medium W wind
Non-raptor Observations: Yesterday we had 6 Common Redpolls, 1 Brown
Creeper, 3 Bonaparte's Gulls, N.Shrike, 1 Rusty Blackbird, along with 15
Wild Turkeys on Hall's Rd., plus many more non-raptors.
Today/Nov.25--several Ring-necked Pheasants (not seen for quite a while)
were at the north end of the wetland; N.Shrike, swamp sparrow,
white-throated sparrow, several Wild Turkeys on the roadway
Raptor Observations:
It was difficult to count the actual numbers of Rough-leggeds, insofaras
they were alternating between hovering, stooping and perching, with 5 "going
through", 1 being a dark morph.
OUR TOTAL OF 10,881 migrating raptors brings us to 119 shy of 11,000--it may
be difficult to 'achieve' before Nov.30, our last official day. I will
likely man the platform on the Saturday, Dec.1.

Today Ian Cannell found the 2 Purple Sandpipers above the barge above the Falls
as well as an adult Lesser black-backed Gull and we had a Thayer's Gull at the
Sand Docks ( now out of bounds and fenced in and the road closed ) and on the
way home we stopped at Gray Road in Stoney Creek and the adult male Barrow's
Goldeneye was still there in close and easily seen
.
You can also find all 3 Scoter species and Red-throated Loons off of Gray and
Green Roads.
Duirections:-
Niagara - See Mark Cranfords post of yesterday.
GRAY ROAD, LAWRENCE SAYER’S PARK and GREEN ROAD IN STONEY CREEK
>From the Toronto direction exit the QEW highway at Centenial Parkway on the
south end of the Burlington Skyway. Drive under the QEW and drive a short
distance to the North Service Road, turn right and drive along the Service Road
to Drake Drive (just past the Gray Road overpass). Turn left on Drake and drive
the short distance to Frances Avenue and turn left, drive to Gray Road and turn
right and drive to the lake.
Alternately you can turn right at Frances Avenue and drive to Green Road, turn
left at Green Road and drive to the lake.
For Lawrence Sayer’s Park you can turn right off Gray Road just before you get
to the lake and drive to the park (obey the no parking signs here as others have
received a ticket). Or you can drive straight down Drake to the park from the
Service Road.

It appears that our season is winding down as only a handful of birds were
recorded under fairly favorable conditions.
Non-raptor Observations:
Today saw the return of the Gannet although this time it was much more
cooperative, giving us several good views over the course of a half hour or
so as it worked the area between Sturgeon Bar and Celeron Island. It made
quite a few plunge dives during the time that we watched it but it wasn’t
clear whether it caught anything in any of these attempts.

THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 6:00 pm, SUNDAY NOVEMBER 25, 2007
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
The best birds this week were found just before the first major
snowfall of the season hit our area.
On the 20th, a SLATY-BACKED GULL was discovered outside the Ottawa
area but close enough
to mention in this report - also it is a very rare bird in
Ontario. The gull was still happily feeding
on garbage at the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre on County Rd.
56 south of Pembroke
as of at least the 24th. To arrange a visit to this site, it is
necessary to call ahead (613-735-7537)
and ask for Elizabeth Graham. Visitors must check in at the entry
office and abide by the safety
regulations. The gull can be easily viewed without leaving one's vehicle.
In Ottawa on the 21st a flock of 14 PURPLE SANDPIPERS landed at the
end of one of the rock
jetties at Britannia Beach; several remained here to ride out the
storm on the 22nd but have not
been reported since then.
Other noteworthy sightings included a male Canvasback on the Quebec
side of the Ottawa River
near the boat launch east of the end of Vanier St. in Deschenes on
the 19th, and a male
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE seen again on the Rideau River north of the Rideau
Tennis Club the
same day. Just like last winter, there seems to be no certainty as
to whether there are 2 male
Barrow's or just one moving back & forth between the Rideau site and
the Ottawa River at Remic
rapids. An OREGON JUNCO discovered back on the 12th was seen again on
the 23rd and the 25th;
it seems to be moving around in the general vicinity of the Fletcher
Wildlife Garden and the
Arboretum of the Central Experimental Farm. Reports of Rough-legged
Hawks, a couple of Merlins
and Northern Shrikes, and good numbers of Bohemian Waxwings, Snow
Buntings, Pine Grosbeaks,
Common Redpolls and Evening Grosbeaks continue to come in from
various locations.
Thank you - Good Birding!

From: "Ott User" <willott123(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 25 Nov 2007 5:46pm
Hi.
The Dark-eyed Junco 'Oregon form' originally reported (assuming this
is the same one) by Bev McBride on Nov. 12th is still at the Fletcher
Wildlife Gardens (FWG) late this afternoon. Link to photo below (taken in
low light so excuse the less than ideal quality). It was seen late this
afternoon along with the other Dark-eyed Juncos at the feeders just behind
the Interpretive Centre. Two other birders had seen it just earlier at the
other feeder (as was reported yesterday).
A flock of 80+ Bohemian Waxwings spent the afternoon at the FWG.
Earlier a solo Cedar Waxwing was seen as well. Spotted another large flock
(80+) yesterday at the parking lot at Lakeside Gardens/Britannia Beach.
They were feeding on some of the berry trees there.
A Northern Shrike was chasing after birds at the FWG yesterday and one
was seen today along March Valley Road.

Subject: [Ontbirds] Kortright Centre for Conservation - Pine
Grosbeaks, Eastern Screech Owl, Among Others (November 25)
From: "Lev Frid" <lev.frid(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 25 Nov 2007 7:07pm
Hello,
Today I went birding at Kortright Conservation Area. The trail
entrance that I used was located at "The Sugar Bush Shop", which is
located near the Visitor Centre, It was the middle trail of the three
entrances. Following that trail one will encounter many feeders placed
along it. At the very entrance, I watched three female PINE GROSBEAKS
feeding on cones. Then another 7 PINE GROSBEAKS flew overhead.
Continuing through the trail, one will reach a grassy area in which
one can turn right or go straight. Go straight to go to the marsh. If
you are going the right way you will encounter a fenced-off bridge.
You will follow a river until you reach a sharp left to go to the
marsh boardwalk. The marsh was frozen over, but if one takes the
boardwalk, to the right, one will come across a Bat House, with a Wood
Duck nesting box not far away. There is a gray morph EASTERN SCREECH
OWL roosting in there. If you're lucky, you will see him peeking out,
but it is worth it to wait approximately 3-5 minutes in that section,
he will eventually show himself. As you continue, you will see many
pine trees to your left. Search these carefully, as these may produce
owls. There is an abundance of BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES, who may help
you in terms of locating owls.
Directions:
The Kortright Centre is located three kilometers west of Highway 400
and one kilometer south of Major Mackenzie Drive at 9550 Pine Valley
Drive in Woodbridge.
