[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Niagara River - Sunday, Nov 25 From: "Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter" <dannapotter(AT)roadrunner.com> Date: 26 Nov 2007 5:58am The number of Bonaparte's Gulls continues well below average but definitely increasing. The number of large gulls is also well below average. Few highlights today. One adult THAYER'S GULL, still in primary molt, on the breakwall below the control gates above the falls. One adult ICELAND GULL at the power plants on the lower river. About 5-6 adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, most seen above the falls. Two PURPLE SANDPIPERS above the falls on a rock a couple hundred yards out from a point between the Ontario Hydro Building (the Engineerium) and the gatehouse, which is a couple hundred yards further upstream. (This is the same rock that these birds have been seen on for the past few years.) Several folks spent a considerable amount of time looking for the Black-headed Gull that was found yesterday in the Fort Erie/Buffalo area of the river. As far as I am aware, it was not seen today. However, a second-winter LITTLE GULL was reported between the Railroad bridge and the Peace Bridge. Two RED-NECKED and three HORNED GREBES were also in Fort Erie and a few TUNDRA SWANS were seen on the drive from Fort Erie to Niagara Falls. I suspect that there were other gulls of note seen today but I have not received all the reports from people who were out there. A flock of 20 PINE GROSBEAKS was seen this morning at the fruiting ornamental trees at the Robert Moses Parkway entrance to Fort Niagara S.P. in Youngstown, NY. Good birding! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Ottawa "Oregon" Junco - May be two From: Bev McBride <foxsparrow01(AT)hotmail.com> Date: 26 Nov 2007 4:46am Dear Ontbirders, This note is to alert Ottawa observers that there may be two "Oregon"-type Juncos kicking around the Fletcher Wildlife Garden area. Thanks to Wilson Hum's great photo of the Nov 23-25 bird, I don't think it's the one I saw Nov 12. On that bird the black hood did not taper down to a point on the breast, but extended downward at less of an angle, ending more bluntly (very much like a squared-off beard); the rusty colour on the flanks was much less extensive, seeming to end roughly even with the "shoulder", with the whitish colour of the bird's underside extending up between the wing and hood/bib. I can send a distant photo to anyone interested who contacts me off list. Again, this is meant simply as a "heads-up", not to foment "chat" on Ontbirds. :) Directions to the Fletcher Wildlife Garden can be found at:http://www.ofnc.ca/fletcher/location.php Very best to all, Bev McBride _________________________________________________________________ R U Ready for Windows Live Messenger Beta 8.5? [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Yellow-breasted Chat Ashbridge's Bay - YES (Nov 25th) From: Iain Fleming <iaindmfleming(AT)hotmail.com> Date: 26 Nov 2007 6:03am I located the Chat yesterday (Nov 25th) near the ladder/life ring (as previously mentioned) at around 8:45am. It seemed to be in a bit of discomfort, attempting to bring something up out of its stomach without success. Other than that, it was active and appeared healthy. Photos of the bird can be found here: http://iaindmfleming.zenfolio.com/p6771689/?photo=h07C27D56#133630613 Directions as posted by Eleanor Beagan: Ashbridge's Bay Park is at the foot of Coxwell Ave. in eastern Toronto, east of the Don Valley Parkway. Exit south off Lake Shore Blvd at Coxwell, and drive to the parking lot in front of the yacht club. Take the southwest path as far as it goes and be prepared to enjoy. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Peregrine From: Mike B <goshawktalons(AT)yahoo.ca> Date: 26 Nov 2007 12:50pm I spotted a peregrine falcon sitting on top of a silo on the north side of the road in between Fowlers Corners and the town of Omemee. It sat and watched as a flock of pigeons scattered from the farm yard. This is located on Highway 7 as you come up the big hill from Fowlers Corners. There is a big cattle farm with two silos and a radio/cell phone tower next to it on the north side of the road. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Black-legged Kittiwake - Southampton From: "mike pickup" <mpickup(AT)bmts.com> Date: 26 Nov 2007 2:02pm For those who may want to try for the bird in Southampton. I have not seen or heard of anyone else seeing it since last Thursday. Directions Take Hyw #21 to Southampton. If you are coming from the south, make a left or if coming from the north make a right turn on Clarendon St. Follow this road to Pioneer Park and turn right and you are at the harbour. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]RE: Gannet Flight Speeds and Foraging Distances From: "Sutherland, Don (MNR)" <Donald.Sutherland(AT)ontario.ca> Date: 26 Nov 2007 3:01pm While it might seem improbable for a Gannet to travel the 54 km straight-line distance between Cobourg and Oshawa harbours in an hour, it certainly isn't impossible. The Gannet is capable of flight speeds of 60 km/h, regularly foraging over distances of 60 km and occasionally as much as 180 km from breeding colonies. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]redpolls, white-rumped sandpiper, horned larks, perhaps a longspur--3 locales in Whitby--Nov.26/07 From: "Doug Lockrey" <lockrey33(AT)rogers.com> Date: 26 Nov 2007 4:26pm Hall's Rd., Cranberry Marsh Raptor Watch platform--several Common Redpolls, white-throated sparrow, swamp sparrow, 3 wild turkeys; at 0945--Jim Fairchild's keen ears heard what was possibly a Lapland Longspur as it flew over us--it was not white and "did not sound like a Snow Bunting". We had only 6 migrating raptors--2 Red-taileds, 3 Rough-leggeds and 1 SAm.Kestrel. Our count stands at 10,887. Pringle Creek mudflats west of Brock St. S. in Whitby (south 0.5km. from Victoria St.)--a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER. Manured fields along the west side of Cochrane St. immediately north of Highway 7--I only watched from my car for 10 minutes, therefore not giving myself a chance to fully ID the flocks of birds cavorting over the fields--HORNED LARKS were definitely noted. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Slaty-backed Gull near Pembroke From: "Michael Jaques" <michael.jaques(AT)sympatico.ca> Date: 26 Nov 2007 2:08pm Hi Ontbirders, The Slaty-backed Gull was still present at 10.30 this morning, Nov 26, at the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre south of Pembroke. It was standing, sitting and preening in the gully across from the steel bins at the landfill. Directions from previous posts: To enter the landfill as a guest, call ahead (613-735-7537) to the landfill and ask for Elizabeth Graham. She has some rules and wants everyone to check in at the entry office. You wait for the green light and then drive up on the scales to check in. We were instructed to park by the bins and stay in the vehicle. To get to the landfill, drive north of Eganville staying on Hwy 41 for about 14 km., then turn left on B-Line Rd. Go about 2 km. travelling around a curve to the left and at the end of the curve turn left onto County Rd 56, also called Woito Station Road. The landfill is on your right about 3 km. down Cty Rd 56. At 3:00, all the gull took off and approx. half flew away and did not return. At that time, the Slaty-backed Gull was relocated sitting near the bins close to my car. > Directions from previous posts: > > To enter the landfill as a guest, call ahead (613-735-7537) to the landfill > and ask for Elizabeth Graham. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Slaty-Backed Gull From: Christian Renault <crenault5tu(AT)hotmail.com> Date: 26 Nov 2007 2:26pm Hi Ontbirders, The Slaty-backed Gull was still present at 3:55 p.m. this afternoon, Nov 26, at the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre south of Pembroke (It closes at 4:00 p.m., and it gets dark by then). It was on top of the heap in the landfill, with immature Great Black Backs and Glaucous G., and the usual Herring G. and Ring Bills. The Slaty could also be seen from the second entrance (400m further on your right) with a 40x scope. That doesn't beat being less than 10 m away from it. Sensitive nose abstain. A Rough-Legged Hawk is sometimes seen on B-Line nearby the intersection with County Rd 56, as was the case today. Pay a visit to Lake Doré nearby, there are interesting aquatic birds quite often out there.
