Subject: [Ontbirds]Redpolls and White-crowned sparrows - Newmarket
From: "Steve" <steve.mcallister(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 27 Nov 2007 1:42pm
Having read the many posts about Common Redpolls in the vicinity, we've been
waiting for a visit to our feeders. We've never had them at our feeders in
the 12 years we've been in Newmarket but on Saturday we had our first
Redpoll. Then today, a flock of around 25-30+ have been visiting the
feeders off and on all morning. Also getting our first ever White-crowneds
periodically amongst Tree Sparrows, White-Throated and the usual suspects.
We are at the south end of Newmarket, just north of Mulock, west of Bayview.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Yellow-breasted Chat@Ashbridge's Park - YES
From: "John Stirrat" <john.stirrat(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 27 Nov 2007 3:24pm
The Yellow-breasted Chat was seen by a few of us around noon today.
Some real good looks but mostly standing around waiting.
The bird was on the south side of the peninsula feeding on the red berries
of the Euonymus
(Wahoo/Burning bush).
Directions:
As previously posted, the park is located off the south end Coxwell (and
just south of Lakeshore w.) Be sure you take the 10-minute hike to most sw
part of the park.

Subject: [Ontbirds]PINE GROSBEAKS
From: "Dave Lord" <davelo(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 27 Nov 2007 12:50pm
There has been a flock of about twenty Pine Grosbeaks in the Cathedral Pines
area of Horseshoe Valley over the past week. Last seen about noon today. They
are all of the "Russet" variety as described in Sibley. They are best located by
listening for their song and then looking up into the high Red Pine or Norway
Spruces that frequent the area. Once, they came to the road surface, where I was
able to obtain a fairly accurate count.
To reach Cathedral Pines take the Horseshoe Valley road;- second exit beyond
Barrie, on Highway 400 head east to Horseshoe Valley. Pass the resort which is
on your right, continue to the top of the hill, and turn left into the Cathedral
Pines area which consists of a one mile loop road in a residential area.
Beware. The roads can be treacherous here this time of year!

Subject: [Ontbirds]York Region Sightings
From: RON FLEMING <flemingron(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 27 Nov 2007 3:53pm
"Northern finches" have continued to show up in various locations across this
region just north of Toronto. Pine Grosbeaks have been reported over the past
two weeks in Aurora, Kleinburg, Holland Landing, Richmond Hill, Thornhill, and
Newmarket, including one unfortunate female that was found dead under a feeder
in the latter town on Sunday.
I have received no word of Evening Grosbeaks over the past two weeks, although
that information (or lack of it) is limited to the amount of sightings brought
to my attention.
Keith Dunn observed a flock of between 50-60 Bohemian Waxwings in Keswick at
the corner of Garden and the Queensway last week and had 200+ Common Redpolls
along Ravenshoe Road West this past Sunday. They were feeding amongst the weeds
in the fields and along the roadside ditches. Just south of Ravenshoe Road on
the windswept stretch of Yonge Street that looks more like Tobacco Road, Bruce
Brydon added a flock of 50+ Snow Buntings and seven Horned Larks Sunday.
Mike Van den Tillaart had a flock of 25 Bohemian Waxwings just north of George
Richardson Park in Newmarket on Saturday. He also had a Brown Creeper at
Wesley Brooks Conservation Area (Fairy Lake) on Sunday. Frank Pinella had a
flock of 15 Common Redpolls at his feeder just west of Yonge and Stouffville
Rds. in north Richmond Hill on the weekend, as well as a male Northern Shrike
Six Common Redpolls visited my feeder at lunchtime today.
Other interesting non-finches (like the shrike mentioned above) included a
flock of 60 Wild Turkeys on the east side of The Queensway in north Keswick on
Sunday and a Cooper's Hawk patrolling the backyards along the John F. Smith
Trail in SW Newmarket yesterday. Accipiter sightings in winter are not uncommon
and with the influx of winter finches visiting suburban feeders and berry
trees, backyard birders will likely get a few extra opportunities to see
Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks as they strafe the yards and terrorize the
visiting flocks.
Ron Fleming, Newmarket
If you require more specific directions regarding any of the places mentioned
above, please e-mail me privately.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Slaty-backed Gull still at Pembroke
From: bob cermak <robertcermak9(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 27 Nov 2007 3:32pm
Bernie Ladouceur, Jan Slumkowski, Paul Mirsky and I found the Slaty-backed Gull
(3rd winter) at about 11:00 am today at the Pembroke landfill site (see
directions below). It was easy to identify since it was the only dark mantled
gull present. Also present were 4 Glaucous (1st winter), 1 Iceland (1st winter),
a few Great Black-backed (1st winter) and the usual Herring and Ring-billed
gulls.
Also, Bernie Ladouceur and I had a bird of interest on the ice on the Ottawa
river at the north end of Oakley street (just east of Ottawa beach) at 4 pm
today. The gull appeared to be a full adult with a grey mantle slightly paler
than a Lesser Black-backed gull. It was Herring gull size or slightly larger,
had minimal streaking on the head and nape, was in with Herring gulls not far
from a few Great Black-backed gulls. The bill was upper end Herring gull size,
yellow with red gonydeal spot. There appeared to be a light dark streak behind
the eye. The bird is possibly a adult nonbreeding northern Western gull or a
pale headed adult Slaty-backed gull. Unfortunately the bird flushed before we
could figure it out. Also present were Glaucous (1st winter), Iceland (adult), 4
Lesser Black-backed (adult) and the usual Herring, Great Black-backed and
Ring-billed gulls.
To enter the landfill as a guest, call ahead (613-735-7537) to the landfilland
ask for Elizabeth Graham. She has some rules and wants everyone tocheck in at
the entry office. You wait for the green light and then driveup on the scales
to check in. The best time to visit is between 11 AM and 1PM. You shouldn't
leave your car unless you are wearing certified safetygear. It is also a good
idea to stay in your car and use it as a blind, driving near the gulls very
slowly. Scope from the window, althoughbinoculars are sometimes enough. Other
gulls at the landfill are HEGU,GBBG, RBGU and GLGU.To get to the landfill, drive
north of Eganville staying on Hwy 41 for about14 km., then turn left on B-Line
Rd. Go about 2 km. travelling around acurve to the left and at the end of the
curve turn left onto County Rd 56,also called Woito Station Road. The landfill
is on your right about 3 km.down Cty Rd 56.

Subject: [Ontbirds] "Migrating Line" of 3 Gannets - Fifty Point C.A.
Grimsby. Nov 27
From: "Holden Family" <holden.ontbirds(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 27 Nov 2007 4:48pm
Birders,
Today my Dad and I watched a large Red-breasted Merganser feeding group east
of Fifty Point C.A. in Grimsby for several hours. Around 1pm, Three juv.
Northern Gannets flew east past Kelson Rd, close to shore, in a very tight
"line". The Sibley Guide shows that gannets migrate in lines, so I decided
to call it a "Migrating Line". Something I had only seen before on the
Atlantic Ocean!
We had a few Gannet sightings earlier in the day, along with at least 3
Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 1 Iceland Gull and several Red-throated Loons.
Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me when the 3 Gannets flew past
in the tight line, however I did snap some distant pictures of an earlier
bird. Shots of the bird can be seen at the top of my "whats new" page on my
website: http://www.peregrineprints.com/ind__WhatsNew.htm
If you wish to reply to me, please send the e-mail to peregrine13(AT)gmail.com
Good Birding!
Brandon Holden
Directions:
Fifty Point: QEW Niagara, exit at Fifty Road (between Fruitland Road and
Casablanca Road Grimsby) towards the lake and follow the signs to Fifty
Point Conservation Area. Kelson rd. is one Road to the east. Other vantage
points to the east were found by driving along the lakeshore.

Thanks to all who dropped by to help and chat as the count season winds
down.
Weather:
There was a stiff SW wind all day today, carrying bands of cloud that
caused remarkably rapid shifts from full sunshine to 100% cloud cover
several times through the count period. Temperatures ranged from 2.3 to
3.8. There was no precipitation.
Raptor Observations:
Just a few Redtails today, almost all behaving like Harriers usually do
when they see the marsh - dropping down to reed-top level and working the
marsh in hopes of a quick meal as they pass through.
Non-raptor Observations:
A few small flocks of Bonapartes Gull passed, as usual seeming to make
light work of the headwind that all other birds were struggling against.
Sixteen Tundra Swans were seen passing and about 100 Goldfinches moved
through. 6 Eastern Bluebirds perched briefly near the base of the tower,
bringing some cheer to a slow day.
Predictions:
Mostly cloudy with moderate SE winds. Temperature from -5 to +4. No rain
or snow expected.
