[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Thayer's Gull today and strange gull yesterday From: "Ladouceur, Bernie" <Bernie.Ladouceur(AT)cra-arc.gc.ca> Date: 28 Nov 2007 1:28pm This morning at about 8 a.m. Bob Cermak and I had a second winter Thayer's Gull looking east off Britannia Point. It was standing and walking in shallow water between the exposed shoal and the Ottawa River Parkway. Structurally, the bird resembled an Iceland Gull. It was off-white overall with slightly darker coverts and tertials (but still very pale), a little bit of mottling on the breast, grey mantle feathers, an all dark bill, pale chocolate primaries edged with white, and a slightly darker chocolate complete and unmottled tailband. More on the posting by Bob Cermak yesterday about the dark-backed gull observed yesterday along the Ottawa River off Oakley street. He forgot to mention the possibility of a hybrid, in particular Great Black-backed X Herring Gull, which upon reflection seems to me to be the most likely possibility. The colour of the mantle was halfway between a Great Black-backed Gull and a Herring Gull, i.e. just slightly lighter than a Lesser Black-backed and probably darker than any Vega Gull - but my experience with Vega Gulls is very limited; the bird "appeared" to be slightly larger than the Herring Gulls next to it; and the paleness of the head. The bird also appeared to lack the robust features (head, bill, body) that I associate with Western Gull. We did not see the legs and we adjusted our position to try and seen them. From any angle the bird was easily relocated and appeared to be dark-backed gull, but definitely not either a (pure) Great Black-backed Gull or Herring Gull. For directions to Britannia Point, click on the following link; find 1. The Britannia Conservation Area (BCA) and scroll down to Britannia Point. http://www.ofnc.ca/birding/wheretogo/bca Oakley street is about halfway between Scrivens Street and Ottawa Beach (Andrew Haydon Park East), north of Carling Avenue. You can find directions to Scrivens street and Ottawa Beach by clicking on the link above and scrolling further down. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Slaty-backed Gull (No) - Eganville From: "Bruce Ripley" <ripley(AT)kingston.net> Date: 28 Nov 2007 3:38pm Just returned from Eganville where we spent from 10:30a.m. to 1:00p.m. looking for the SLATY-BACKED GULL. Although we observed several GLAUCOUS and ICELAND GULLS, we did not see the bird we wanted. We did see a GOLDEN EAGLE fly over the landfill site and on the way home we had a perched BALD EAGLE eyeing a beaver carcass that was on the highway close to Roblin. Cheers Bruce Ripley Amherstview To enter the landfill as a guest, call ahead (613-735-7537) to the landfilland ask for Elizabeth Graham. She has some rules and wants everyone tocheck in at the entry office. You wait for the green light and then driveup on the scales to check in. The best time to visit is between 11 AM and 1PM. You shouldn't leave your car unless you are wearing certified safetygear. It is also a good idea to stay in your car and use it as a blind, driving near the gulls very slowly. Scope from the window, althoughbinoculars are sometimes enough. Other gulls at the landfill are HEGU,GBBG, RBGU and GLGU.To get to the landfill, drive north of Eganville staying on Hwy 41 for about14 km., then turn left on B-Line Rd. Go about 2 km. travelling around acurve to the left and at the end of the curve turn left onto County Rd 56,also called Woito Station Road. The landfill is on your right about 3 km.down Cty Rd 56. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. It is not a mouse; therefore, how can we talk about Titmice? Surely we should be saying Titmouses. The Mongoose plural is not Mongeese. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Ottawa - Oregon Junco still present From: "Christina Lewis" <hagenius(AT)primus.ca> Date: 28 Nov 2007 7:35pm Hello Ontbirds people, A male Oregon Junco ("Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon form") 1st reported on 12 November was seen again at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden today, 28 November at ~ 1:00 pm. It was loosely associating with several other birds at the feeder behind the FWG Interpretive Centre (building #138) including 2 White-throated Sparrows and 3 Dark-eyed Juncos ("Slate-coloured form" - 2 males and 1 very brown female). DIRECTIONS: >From downtown Ottawa, ON, take Preston St. south until it becomes Prince of Wales Dr. at Dow's Lake, continue south and look for the sign on your left indicating the Fletcher Wildlife Garden. The FWG Interpretive Centre (#138) is at the very end of the driveway..but there are many areas worth exploring here for birds, including those at the nearby Arboretum of the Central Experimental Farm. The Oregon Junco has also been seen by the feeders at the south side of the FWG (opposite Carleton University), as well as at the Arboretuem near building #72.
