[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]evening grosbeaks outside of cobalt From: "The Murphy's" <birdboy(AT)ntl.sympatico.ca> Date: 11 Mar 2008 10:13am Greetings birders just thought would report that our areas first flock of evening grosbeaks in months was spotted outside of cobalt as well pine grosbeak and redpoll numbers seem to be rising in the area perhaps signaling the vanguard of the return of winter finches to the north. The Hilliardton marsh has hosted quite a number of hoary redpolls recently much to the pleasure of many who went hoping to specifically see some last week. Pish on!! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Ontbirds and SPAM From: Mark Cranford <mark.cranford(AT)ofo.ca> Date: 11 Mar 2008 2:02pm Birders Just got back this morning on a red-eye flight from a birding trip. I'm still a little sleep deprived. For the last three weeks the list has been ably monitored by my brother Tim. Thank you, Tim. The recent spam message entitled "MIRIAM N sent you a special gift" was sent to the entire Ontbirds list and its 2000 plus subscribers from a registered Ontbirds subscriber. Blubet.com is something that bills itself as 'social betting' a form of social networking similar to Facebook except that its focus is on betting (popularity polls?) using imaginary 'money'. Something I would ignore. One of the more common forms of email address gathering used to build up social networks is to ask a user of their service to invite others to join the network. If you accept the service (Facebook, Blubet etc) it will access your address book and send email invitations to all addresses listed including ontbirds(AT)hwcn.org. Future messages containing the word BluBet are now blocked for review by Ontbirds software. Ontbirds employs a number of strategies to block spam and viruses. Without detailing the works, first-time posts from new subscribers are held for review. If you unsubscribe then resubscribe at a later date, your first post is reviewed before going to the list. I then have to reset a moderation flag so that future posts go directly to the list. There are many email addresses that predate these settings. So there could be potential 'trojan horses' - accidents happen. As always discussing spam and virus related problems on Ontbirds is not to be encouraged. It may feel good but it just annoys others and compounds the problem. Back to my field notes. -- Mark Cranford ONTBIRDS Coordinator Mississauga, Ont. mark.cranford(AT)ofo.ca 905 279 9576 _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Horned Larks From: "Linda Crome" <lindacrome(AT)gmail.com> Date: 11 Mar 2008 7:22am On Saturday, despite inclement weather the Brereton Field Naturalists of Barrie toured outskirts of the Minesing wetlands and found: 30 Horned Larks, 2 Snowies, 3 Roughleged Hawks, a Northern Shrike (just outside the village of Minesing, first street on left) 5 Blue Jays after returning to Hwy 90, turned north on Mckinnon to the farmhouse on the east side at he end and found: 1 Hairy, 1 Downie, Tree Sparrows, House Sparrows, Goldfinches, a Red Bellied Woodpecker, and lots of Junco's. This morning I found one group of 10 Horned Larks on the top of the first hill coming out east of Cookstown, and another group of about 25 on Hwy.89just east of Yonge Street. Come join us on our next field trip, Saturday March 29th, back to that same area, for the last 6 years we have found Sandhill Cranes. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Yellow-headed Blackbird and Red-bellied Woodpecker From: "Brian Young" <brian-young(AT)storm.ca> Date: 11 Mar 2008 3:05pm Hello, Lise and I birded areas of Eastern Ontario this Monday, the Yellow-headed Blackbird and Red-bellied Woodpecker is still visiting the bird feeder at 19275, concession 19 near Williamstown, north of Cornwall. The gentleman at this resident keeps a couple of large bird feeders and onion sacks of suets attracting large assortments of birds. These are probably the best fed birds in the Cornwall region. We also visited the Ste Rose area east of Casselman, although we did not see any Snowy Owls, there was many flocks of Horned Larks, totalling more than a hundred birds on concession 19 and 20 with a small number of Snow Buntings. In the Alfred area we saw three different coveys of Grey Partridge numbering between twenty to thirty birds as a combine total on Peat Bog Road and Concession 10, small numbers of Horned Larks and Snow Buntings, along with two Merlins. Cheers, Brian Young DIRECTIONS, courtesy of Jacques Bouvier, (from Cornwall): Take Hwy 401 west of Cornwall to exit 804. Proceed north past Summerstown Station until you get to the stop sign just past the Raisin River bridge. Turn right on Cty Rd 19 towards Williamstown. A couple of kms along, just past the covered bridge (on your right) is 19,275 County Road 19, on the north (left) side of the road. It is a blue house. The owner allows birders to drive up the lane and check out his feeder on the north side of the house. If the weather is lousy the owner will allow birders to walk up into the 2 car garage, up the little set of steps into the sun room and look in comfort from there. Please do not block the driveway. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]3 Harlequin Ducks at Humber Bay Park in Toronto From: "Andrew Don" <adon14(AT)cogeco.ca> Date: 11 Mar 2008 5:03pm Went by Humber Bay Park East in Toronto today and found 3 Harlequin Ducks ,1 was a gorgeous male. They were out on the lakeside by the far south-east corner of the park. Also saw Horned grebe, Ruddy ducks and the usual waterfowl. A bonus was a Merlin hanging out in a tree by the parking lot Humber Bay park can be reached by going south from the Park Lawn Road exit off Gardiner Expressway to the lake and turning right in the first entrance after Lakeshore Road.
