Subject: [Ontbirds]spring time at Rattray Marsh
From: Wayne Renaud <wayne(AT)renaudwebber.com>
Date: 15 Mar 2008 6:00am
Well what a difference a day makes.
David Hallett and I birded Rattray Marsh for about two hours just before
dawn last night. The big wind storm the other day has effective pushed the
gravel beach-ridge back in place (after being open for most of last summer
and through the winter) and dammed outflow from the south end of marsh to
Lake Ontario creating once more a large body of water.
The small flocks of Red-winged Blackbirds everywhere, most vigorously
singing; one flock of 35 Brown-headed Cowbirds and one Common Grackle. We
also got one each of Song Sparrow, and Swamp Sparrow; also American Tree
Sparrow (lots).
Directions:
Park at the bottom of Bexhill Rd. which runs south of Lakeshore 5 long
blocks east of Erin Mills parkway.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Birding Humber Bay Park
From: Wayne Renaud <wayne(AT)renaudwebber.com>
Date: 15 Mar 2008 6:04am
Yesterday David Hallett and I birded both Humber east and west parks. We
easily found one female and one immature Harlequin Duck (along the bay
directly south across from the parking lot); all three species of
mergansers, White-winged Scoter (2), and two Ring-necked Ducks along with
the other usual suspects.
Access these parks from the end of Park Lane.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Long Point migrants, et al...
From: "LM" <marnmc(AT)globalserve.net>
Date: 15 Mar 2008 9:21am
A casual birding venture to Long Point with John Keenleyside on Friday
produced hundreds of Tundra Swans on the snow-covered area cornfields and
many in flight. Area roadsides produced numbers of Horned Larks and
Red-wings; several Robins, a few Grackles and Snow Buntings, six Killdeers
and two Bluebirds.
John had a Hermit Thrush (a wintering bird?) at the LPBO banding station.
On the way to Long Point, there was a Peregrine sitting on a light standard
on the Burlington Skyway Bridge.
Cheers,
Lou Marsh

Subject: [Ontbirds]Red-bellied Woodpecker - Williamstown
From: Patrick Blake <pjblake22(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 15 Mar 2008 10:18am
Went to check out the two rarities visting the feeders at #19,274 CR-19 near
Williamstown. I did manage to see the red-bellied woodpecker, which was a
female, but the yellow-headed blackbird that was also reported was a no-show
while I was there. This was around 10am this morning. There were also about 15
blue jays, 5 mourning doves, a dozen or so chickadees, 2 hairy woodpeckers, 1
male downy, and about 12 dark-eyed juncos.
DIRECTIONS, courtesy of Jacques Bouvier, (from Cornwall):
Take Hwy 401 west of Cornwall to exit 804. Proceed north past Summerstown
Station until you get to the stop sign just past the Raisin River bridge.
Turn right on Cty Rd 19 towards Williamstown. A couple of kms along, just
past the covered bridge (on your right) is 19,275 County Road 19, on the
north (left) side of the road. It is a blue house. The owner allows birders
to drive up the lane and check out his feeder on the north side of the
house. If the weather is lousy the owner will allow birders to walk up into
the 2 car garage, up the little set of steps into the sun room and look in
comfort from there. Please do not block the driveway.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Gyrfalcon ?? | Horned Larks | Ottawa - Trail Road
From: "Dan McIntosh" <d.mcintosh(AT)computer.org>
Date: 15 Mar 2008 7:04pm
On Friday (14-March-2008) I viewed and photographed a possible Dark Morph
Gyrfalcon. I did not see it in flight - two people were viewing the bird
and did see it fly and land. The white patches (and facial disk?) made me
think it could be a Northern Hawk Owl.
Here is an image from ~ 1Km distance:

This extreme crop (from this image) explains the poor detail:

I also viewed 25-30 Horned Larks on Twin Elm Road about half way between
Barnsdale and Cambrian. Here are some images:

Subject: [Ontbirds]Update Varied Thrush - Kitchener
From: "Andrew Birkner" <abirkner(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 15 Mar 2008 7:22pm
I left shortly after I posted the sighting. At the time I left the robins
were still feeding in the tree, did not see the Varied Thrush. When I
returned at 3:00 pm, there weren't any birds to be seen and have not seen
any since (now 7:15 pm).
Last Saturday, March 8th, we had approximately 30 robins and 30 Cedar
Waxwings feeding in the tree from around 8:00 am til noon. I did not see
any robins or waxwings until yesterday morning at10:00 am and the few birds
stayed for about an hour. Today, only the Robins and of course the Varied
Thrush appeared and that was at 12:45 pm. There is fruit in the tree, so
they may return.
If I see it, I will post immediately or for those who want to chance it,
here are the directions:
Directions from #401 east - Hwy #8 to the second exit (Fairway Road) - turn
right from exit and follow to 1st set of lights which is Fairway Road - turn
left onto Fairway Road and follow to Lackner Blvd. (approx. 3-4 kms) - turn
left onto Lackner Blvd. - turn left at first street, Corfield Drive. -
follow to stop sign, our house is on left hand side - address is 3 Corfield
Dr.
Directions from #401 west, take exit #268B King Street - follow King Street
to Fairway Road - turn right onto Fairway Road and follow to Lackner Blvd.
(approx. 3-4 kms) - turn left onto Lackner Blvd. - turn left at first
street, Corfield Drive. - follow to stop sign, our house is on left hand
side - address is 3 Corfield Dr.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Male Harlequin Duck - Humber East Park in Toronto
From: Peter Sproule <pbsproule(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 15 Mar 2008 4:27pm
After an unsuccessful try of spotting the male Harlequin Duck at Humber East
Park earlier today, Bev McDonald and I spent the late afternoon, from ~ 4:30 to
6 pm, watching it, the female and an immature, feeding along the south shoreline
between the east and west points of the park.
Humber Bay East Park is at the south end of Park Lawn Road. From the west, take
the Park Lawn exit off of the Gardiner; from the east, take the Lakeshore exit
to Park Lawn. Take the
first right turn to the parking lot.

Good evening
This morning I joined Margaret Liubavicius for a stroll on the Leslie Street
Spit and stroll we did as it was a beautiful morning to be out there.
Highlights birds were:-
Horned grebes - 6
Red-necked Grebes - 26
Both Scaup
White-winged Scoters - 47
All 3 Mergansers including 2 Hooded Mergansers

Peregrine Falcon - we saw 1 but 2 were present
Horned Larks - 19 overhead

Note:- All the Grebes and Scoters were on the lake as the bays are still frozen
over thus a low Waterfowl count.
Directions:-
LESLIE STREET SPIT (TOMMY THOMPSON PARK) IN TORONTO
To get to "The Spit" from Queen and Yonge Streets. Take the Queen Street Car
#501 east to Leslie St. and walk south (about 2 km) or as far as you can go on
Leslie St. at Unwin Ave. and you will see the gate and signage. You may also
catch the Jones Bus #83 at the Donlands Subway Station or transfer to it at
Queen St. and Jones Ave. and take it to Leslie St. And Commissioner St. (on
Saturday only). By automobile you may drive to Lakeshore Blvd and Leslie St.
then south to The Spit.
You can park either on Leslie St. or Unwin Ave. You may also park in the parking
lot inside the main gate after 9 am. Be sure to observe the parking lot closing
time as if you are not out by then your auto will be locked in until the
following day. — THE PARKING LOT AND ALL GATES WILL BE LOCKED AT 4:30 pm and
there is no Van in the
winter.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE:- The official hours for The Spit are 9 am to 4:30 pm (weekends and
holidays only of course) but the unofficial hours are sunup to sundown. To date
no one has questioned any birder, jogger, cyclist, etc. about the use of The
Spit from sunup to sundown.
The spit is only open on the weekends and on holidays, at other times you will
not be able to access the area. This area is extensive, 7 km to the tip, but be
prepared to walk more than that. The Spit is only open on the weekends and
holidays because they are still building it.

Subject: [Ontbirds]OFO Long Point trip Sat
From: "George Pond" <gpond(AT)blueelephant.ca>
Date: 15 Mar 2008 8:04pm
49 people in 23 cars [after pooling] travelled from Turkey Point to Long
Point. As a group 59 species were identified but as usual in a group of this
size everyone missed several species seen by others. Traffic was very heavy
with several other birding groups in the area making it very difficult to
keep the group togather. My apoligies to any of the group that may have
gotten lost. Highlights included thousands of Tundra Swans sitting on the
ice in the bay, swimming in any open water, sitting in the fields and flying
overhead. Against the blue of the sky they made an impressive sight indeed.
Several Sandhill Cranes were seen by all as was a mature Bald Eagle sitting
on the ice. Some saw a Hermit Thrush at Old Cut.As usual on this trip some
saw their first Robin, Redwing, Grackle and Killdear for the year.Spring was
certainly in the air.
Many thanks to Barry Jones, Jim Heslip and Bob Stamp for leading the large
convoy of vehicles and to Diane Salter for her Bird feeders were we saw our
only Siskins and Redpolls and later Red Bellied and Hairy Woodpeckers and
White Throated Sparrows [I guess some of us should have waited along a
little longer] thanks also to Bird Studies Canada for the use of the Old Cut
Visitor centre for lunch and washroom facilities.
Dont forget to Sponsor the OFO birding team that will be doing the Baillie
Birdathon on behalf of OFO
