[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]bohemian waxwing in London From: "peter burke" <psburke(AT)rogers.com> Date: 19 Mar 2008 2:18pm In addition to Steve Thorpe's observation of Bohemian Waxwing in Stratford today, I had a single with a flock of 30+ Cedars in my neighborhood of Old South in London. I suspect that these birds are drifting northwards as numbers typically build in late winter/early spring in the usual wintering areas for Bohemians in Ontario about now. That is beside the village of Elginburg. It was in roadside trees on the south where there ios a tall embankment, and moving east. the 401 exit for sydenham raod is at km 613 north. Probably will not stay long, but since there are few reports I wanted to get it out. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Birds in Bradford area From: "Peter Wukasch" <wukasch.family(AT)sympatico.ca> Date: 19 Mar 2008 5:29pm The last week has been good for waxwings and winter finches in Bradford. Today there was a flock of 300 Bohemian Waxwings feeding on two flowering crabs in a yard in town on Maplegrove Avenue, and several days before the same trees were crowded with an eqaul number of Cedra Waxwings with five Bohemians thrown in. They spooked when a Sharpie came on the scene and towered above to avoid the hawk. At Scanlon Creek ther is a mixed flock of 10 Pine grosbeaks and 20 Com. Redpolls feeding in the tamaracks right at the education centre. On another note, I also saw a Northern Mockingbird in a very "un-mockingbird " habitat in a back alley just west of the Tor. Western Hosp. Directions: Bradford is north on Hwy 400 to County Rd. 88 east to Simcoe Rd., south to Catania Ave. and west again to Maplegrove. Scanlon Creek is north on Hwy. 11 to the 9th line and east to the park entrance. Turn left and go to pking. lot. At one point, they arose en masse and towered overhead to avoid a Sharp-shinned Hawk that had bolted onto the scene. Several days ago the trees were crowded by an equal number of Cedar Waxwings mixed with five Bohemians. This is the largets flock of Bohemians I have witnessed in this area. I also saw a Northern Mockingbird in the alley way just west of Toronto Western Hospital in a very "unmockingbird" habitat. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Great Blue Herons - Guelph From: carol parafenko <cmparafenko(AT)hotmail.com> Date: 19 Mar 2008 9:14pm Hello birders. A lovely regal pair of Great Blue Herons slowly flapped their way across the intersection of Kortright and Edinburgh roads in south Guelph on Wed. Mar. 19, about six storeys off the ground. They were silent, heading roughly northeast. At about 5 p.m., they contrasted noticeably with the rush hour busy-ness of the intersection below. Since I haven't seen any herons in the area since last fall, I am assuming they are not local but are on their way home to somewhere else (if I am mistaken, please let me know). This is the earliest in the year I have ever seen blue herons. Conditions were: overcast, slight drizzle, about +4, little wind, deep slushy snow cover, ponds only slightly melted in their centres.
