Subject: [Ontbirds]Report Roosting Sites of Migrant Turkey Vultures
From: "Weseloh,Chip [Ontario]" <Chip.Weseloh(AT)ec.gc.ca>
Date: 22 Mar 2008 9:33am
Posted with permission
There have been at least two reports of Turkey Vultures roosting in
woodlots in southern Ontario on Ontbirds this week. Anne-Marie LaPointe
reported 4 (though she has had up to 30) in a woodlot on the edge of
Warwick on the 17th and, yesterday, Bruce and Bea reported 28 in a pine
forest at Wheatley. Both roosting areas have been used for at least 5
years. Scientifically, the roosting behaviour of Turkey Vultures is not
well known. The Turkey Vulture Society
(http://vulturesociety.homestead.com/), a non-profit scientific
corporation, dedicated to the study and dissemination of information on
TVs, requests the public to report TV roosts
(http://vulturesociety.homestead.com/ReportRoost.html). Ontario birders
can make a significant contribution to the study of the roosting
behaviour of this bird via this web site. I urge you to report roosting
Turkey Vultures to the above web site and, if you can, notify me
separately.
Thanks,

How am I supposed to get any work done? I'm trying to write a book and these
darn birds keep distracting me!!!!
A female/immature Merlin landed in a maple outside my den window today. After
about 10 minutes it was spotted by the resident Cooper's Hawks who did not
appreciate the visit and made it known.
Also saw a Northern Shrike in North Ajax and 5 Evening Grosbeaks north of Cty Rd
23 on Balsam Rd. (Durham Region) today.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Am Woodcocks in Hay Swamp, S Huron County
From: "Rick Thornton" <rickthor(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 22 Mar 2008 8:37pm
Evening Folks:
In spite of the persistent, considerable snow cover, there were Am Woodcocks
peenting and displaying at 8:00pm this evening. The display flights were few
probably due to the cold. But, a sign of spring none the less...
Directions:
The woodcocks were on the south west quadrant of the intersection of 83
highway and Ausable Line. This intersection is 2 concessions west of Exeter
on 83 highway. Exeter is approximately 50 KMs north of London. The property
is posted No Hunting and No Trespassing and the land owner is adamant about
not having anyone on the property. So please respect their wishes and view
this engaging rite of spring from the roadside.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Turkey Vultures Roosting in Warwick
From: Anne-Marie LaPointe <wyndyacre(AT)yahoo.ca>
Date: 22 Mar 2008 9:21pm
At 7 PM this evening, we counted 39 Turkey Vultures roosted in the edge of the
woods.
The birds are roosted in trees that are literally only yards away from the
shoulder of Hwy #22, right at the curve in the road at the west edge of the
village of Warwick.
If you are coming from the east on Hwy 402, you will need to take the exit at
Watford to get to Warwick on Hwy 22.
If coming from the west, take the exit at Hwy 21 (Forest) and turn right to get
to Hwy 22.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Long Point, Port Dover - Waterfowl including swans
From: carol parafenko <cmparafenko(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 22 Mar 2008 6:50pm
Hello birders.
The sun was warm today, Sat. Mar. 22, but still not enough to melt much ice in
Long Point bay where the temperature was about -2 degrees all day.
Nevertheless, a couple thousand Tundra Swans staged in the few areas of open
water east of the point, their "kow-wows" echoing over the shore. What a sight
they made as small groups periodically rose and circled around, necks
outstretched, their clean white forms turning and reflecting the light like
crystal. Lots of visitors, die-hard birders but also families with children,
came to see the swans. Just for an added bonus, some of us were thrilled to see
and hear (like a screechy trumpet) three or four Sandhill Cranes during the noon
hour.
Buffleheads and Canvasbacks ducks could be seen from the bridge.
Heading east on Old Cut Road and driving the shore roads all the way to Port
Dover, we were rewarded with the sight of more than one farmers field sheltering
small groups of Tundra Swans, poking around for loose bits of corn. A lookout
in Port Rowan just west of Aker's Ice Huts was a particularly good location to
view ducks, but a scope would have helped a lot.
Port Dover was where the real diving duck show took place. The Marina and Port
Dover Harbour were warm, sheltered and sunny and the ducks were loving it. Seen
were Redhead, Greater and Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead, Common and Hooded Merganser,
Ring-Necked Duck, Common Golden-Eye, as well as the more common Canada Geese
and a flock of at least 30 Mallards. They were on land at a spot just below the
Hwy. 6 bridge at the end of the gravel parking lot near the Tim Hortons. They
felt like going for a supper-time walk as a group. Comical to see.
Just to top it all off, nine wild turkeys on Hwy. 5 immediately east of St.
George, pecking in a frenzy at patches of exposed grass. Don't spread this
location around, or those turkeys will be on someone's plate for dinner in no
time!
Happy Easter to those who celebrate the holiday. For everyone else, Happy Long
Weekend.
