Subject: [Ontbirds]Ivy Lea Provincial Park (1000 Islands) - Bald
Eagles and Turkey Vulture - Saturday March 22/08
From: Dan Shire <dan.shire(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 24 Mar 2008 1:01am
Ivy Lea Provincial Park is an easily accessed and very reliable spot to
see bald eagles which over winter near the 1000 Islands Bridge at Ivy
Lea (between Gananoque and Brockville).
While most of the Canadian Channel in the St. Lawrence remains solidly
frozen, there is plenty of fast moving open water near Ivy Lea that is
attracting some early migrant waterfowl. The mainland park is also a
great viewing spot to watch for eagles, a 5 to 10 minute walk to the
edge of the river gives an excellent view of the National Park Islands
where the eagles roost. Parks Canada generally reports at least a half
dozen bald eagles which over winter each year in the vicinity of Hill
Island.
On Saturday March 22, there was enough open water in Smuggler's Cove
(just inside the Ivy Lea park gate) to enjoy close views of common and
hooded mergansers, lesser scaup and buffleheads (and plenty of migrating
Canada Geese). Within a couple of minutes the ducks were on alert as an
immature bald eagle flew over and landed in a white pine at the entrance
of the cove. We also saw one early turkey vulture (there's still 2 feet
of snow in the bush) flying over the park gatehouse. With the receeding
snow on the shoulders of the highway, a number of raccoon casualties
were surfacing. A resident reported seeing a lone turkey vulture in
nearby Rockport about 1 week earlier (March 15) feeding at a deer
(roadkill).
And, with sunny daytime highs of only about 3C, I was astonished to see
one (little) brown bat zip out of the house attic Saturday around 4PM.
There were a few flies buzzing around the grassy base of some trees - I
suppose the bat has adapted its feeding time to align with the few hours
of insect activity on these cold early spring days, but it seems a
precarious date to emerge from winter hibernation.
Take Highway 401 exit # 659 (Reynolds Road) about 1 mile south to the
1000 Islands Parkway and park in the driveway near the gatehouse. Walk
the main road south, bearing right (west) to walk beside Smuggler's Cove
and proceed to the boat ramp for flowing open water. It's a 5 minute walk.

THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 8:30 pm, MARCH 23, 2008
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
As the seasons continue to duke it out weather-wise, a few local firsts of
the year were reported on the first "official" day of spring. On the 20th a
Great Blue Heron flew over Richmond at Rushmore Rd., single Turkey
Vultures were seen over the Ottawa River at Tunney's Pasture as well as
the Trail Rd. landfill and Laverendrye Blvd. in Gatineau, and the first
report of a Common Grackle was on the 19th at a feeder on McGillivray
St. near the Rideau Canal. Subsequent reports of all 3 species came in
from other locations over the Easter weekend as well.
The GRAY PARTRIDGES in Kanata were most recently seen near the utility
buildings at #1655 Maple Grove Rd. on the 23rd and they are now
beginning to pair off. Large groups of Bohemian Waxwings numbering
up to 300 birds per flock were again noted in many locations during the
past several days and are being joined by increasing numbers of Cedar
Waxwings. Other noteworthy birds seen in our area included 2 adult
Bald Eagles as well as 1 Iceland and 6 Glaucous Gulls at the Deschenes
and Remic rapids of the Ottawa River on the 20th, and a Northern Shrike
was singing at March Valley Rd. on the 23rd.
Thank you - Good Birding!

Subject: [Ontbirds]Red-shouldered Hawks - Eastern Ontario
From: "Michael Jaques" <michael.jaques(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 24 Mar 2008 2:40pm
This afternoon we saw Red-shouldered Hawks at two locations in Eastern
Ontario.
The first was near Wolfe Lake in Frontenac County. The second was near
Mississippi Lake in Lanark County. Both were in locations near where we
have seen them in previous years, so they may be on territory.

Visitors:
In addition to the principal observers on the tower, others helping with
the count included Brandon and Eric Holden, Dave Sked and Fran, George
Meyers, Brian Hawthorne, Betty (from Oshawa).
Visitors included a couple from Oakville, a young boy from Stoney Creek
needing some new binos, Frank Horvath, four young men from Sudan plus some
parents with young children.
Weather:
Very clear and almost cloud-free after 0930 EST. An overnight dusting of
snow had disappeared by mid-day. Northerly winds until about 1500h when
they swung to the SW.
Raptor Observations:
Primarily a day for TVs with very high RTs and a few RS in the early
afternoon. One adult Bald Eagle.
Several TVs headed into the gulley to the east after 1600h. Local CH pair
and RTs seen at least twice each.
Suspect that migrating accipiters may have been out of sight in early
afternoon as even buteos were difficult to find they were so high in the
clear blue sky.
Non-raptor Observations:
A dearth of migrants. Crows active moving east and west. The resident
Northern Mockingbird was vocalizing often.
