This morning I saw 3 Wood Ducks along with a Hooded Merganser, 2 Bufflehead,
blacks, Mallard, and Canada Geese on the open section of Lake Victoria near the
Festival Bridge. Other recent arrivals include Turkey Vultures, Killdeer,
grackles and robins.
Lake Victoria can be reached from Ontario Street (Hwy 7/8) by driving North on

Subject: [Ontbirds]Turkey Vulture - London

Date: 26 Mar 2008 7:06pm
Hi All
AT 6:15 tonight I had a Turkey Vulture over the
intersection of Richmond and Fanshawe.
That seems pretty early for Vulture in London, but I
think we are all weather challenged lately.
Good Birding,
Ellen Smout
Hopefully this map will get you there.

Subject: Re: [Ontbirds]8 King Eider - Stoney Creek
From: "Kevin" <kevinmc(AT)mountaincable.net>
Date: 26 Mar 2008 3:58pm
Just following up on Mike's post for Tuesday. 6 King Eiders were in view
from Sayer's Park this morning, then disappeared. I re-stationed myself at
the north end of Green Road and found a tight bunch of 9 birds about 400 to
500 metres directly off shore. Interestingly, the ratio was different from
yesterday, with 4 1st alternate males and 5 females. This reveals that there
are more than 9 birds present in the area.
Directions : Take the Fruitland Road exit from the QEW and go north towards
the lake. Turn left on North Service Road, head west to Green Road and turn
right to the lake.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Northern Ontario Sightings
From: Jean Iron <jeaniron(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 26 Mar 2008 9:03pm
I just had a phone call from Erwin Meissner of Massey, which is west
of Sudbury. Erwin mentioned some interesting recent sightings. He's
not on email.
Sharp-tailed Grouse: Nine were displaying on top of the icy snow near
Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island. Numbers will increase.
Great Gray Owl: There have been several recent reports, including two
on Manitoulin Island. Most Great Grays are being seen for only one
day suggesting that they are returning north. I wonder where they wintered.
Great Horned Owl: A pair of Great Horned Owls is using an old raven's
nest. One bird is a pale northern Snyder's subspecies
(scalariventris) and the other is a darker southern subspecies
(virginianus). This mixed pair is not unexpected because subspecies
freely interbreed. Great Horned Owls prey heavily on Snowshoe Hares
in northern Ontario.
Most Pine Grosbeaks departed northward about two weeks ago.
Bobcat and Lynx: Erwin has a Bobcat that comes to his bird feeder at
night. It took some suet and a few days ago he gave it a road-killed
Ruffed Grouse. Bobcats are rare in Ontario. Most are found along the
north shore of Lake Huron. I've also had reports that Lynx may be
fairly common this winter in parts of northern Ontario. Erwin
mentioned that Snowshoe Hares are common in Massey. Hares also must
be common in areas reporting Lynx.
Good birding,

Subject: [Ontbirds]Spring arrivals, Lindsay area.
From: "Hartley" <bob.mary.hartley(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 26 Mar 2008 8:30pm
Yesterday my wife and I saw a Northern Shrike at Peace and Sturgeon Rds.
Today there was an Eastern Meadowlark on the Slanted Rd between Post Rd and
Highway #7 near the horse farm. 20 Horned Larks were in the same area in
small groups of 2 to 6.
Two Turkey Vultures and a Cooper's Hawk were seen on Heights Rd just south
of Tracey's Hill Rd.
25 Red-winged Blackbirds were at a feeder in Reaboro, just off #7. A Robin
was also in the area.
These locations are all south east of Lindsay.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Black Vulture - Simcoe
From: "Mike Boyd" <mike.d.boyd(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 26 Mar 2008 8:52pm
Dear Fellow Birders,
Around 5:45pm today I found a Black Vulture just south of Simcoe, off
of Hwy 24. It was initially seen over Hwy 24 but then flew to the east
and began soaring around with a group of 5 Turkey Vultures before
heading back west again. When I left it was heading west over Hwy 24
but much higher than the Turkey Vultures.
Directions: Exit Hwy 403 at Hwy 24 South, west of Brantford, and
follow it south past Simcoe. It was seen near the intersection with
Radical Rd, however I would imagine it may be closer to Hwy 59
tomorrow if it continued in a westerly direction.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Am. Woodcock displaying in Whitby
From: Steve LaForest <stevelaforest(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 26 Mar 2008 9:53pm
Hello Ontbirders,
On Wednesday, March 26, there were at least 4 AMERICAN WOODCOCK calling and
displaying at a wet field in Whitby. The birds were active from at least 8:00
to 8:20 pm. This site has been reliable for at least 8 seasons.
Directions:
Exit hwy 401 at Thickson Road (Exit #412) and go south about 1/2 km to Victoria
Street East. Turn left (east) and go past shopping plazas on both sides of the
road until you have driven 0.9 km. If you reach the storage site, you have gone
too far. The site is a wet field on the south (right) side of the road. The
birds may be heard from the roadside, but you will hear and see them much better
by walking into the field. The birds are well distributed between the road and
the railroad embankment, but are usually easier to find near the southeast end.
Good birding,
Steve LaForest,
Oshawa
