Hi Birders,
Five members of the North Leeds Birders (NLB) group also attended
Presqu'ile Sunday (March 30th) and shared many of the same sightings
that Bruce Di Labio recorded in his previous email. For those who might
wish to observe some of the Waterfowl recorded there on Sunday
afternoon, please click on the following:

Subject: [Ontbirds]Birds-Amherst Island-Kingston
From: "Brian Young" <brian-young(AT)storm.ca>
Date: 31 Mar 2008 9:39am
Hello,
Lise and I visited Amherst Island yesterday; it was a beautiful sunny day.
The bird species is picking up, we saw American Kestrels, some already have
paired up with mates, many Rough-legged Hawks in a variety of morphs, some
Red-tailed hawks. There were robins pretty much everywhere, song sparrows,
Killdeers, Woodcocks (along the side of the road going into Owls Wood). In
Owls Woods, we saw one Long-eared Owl and fresh pheasant tracks in the snow.
We listened to a House Finch singing at the south end of the road going into
Owls Wood, it was in splendid colours. On the 410, near the exit to Rte 4,
there was a very fine looking, plump Northern Shrike sitting in a tree. The
north side of the island is still frozen, with some ducks to be seen in the
channel for the ferry, the south side is open with many water fowl, mostly
Goldeneyes and Saups.
Cheers,
Brian

Subject: [Ontbirds]Ottawa - Snowy Owls and other birds
From: "Ott User" <willott123(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 31 Mar 2008 7:49am
Hi Ontbirders:
It was only fitting light snow was forecast early in the
morning on this last day of March. It's changing to rain later in the morning.
4 Snowy Owls are still east of Casselman as of yesterday, March 30th. Another
person told me he has seen as many as 5 to 6 Snowy Owls at this location over
the winter including 2 white males. He showed me a photo of one of the white
male Snowy Owls. Also on Sunday, a flock of 150 to 200 Snow Buntings were seen
in the fields and side of road on one of the concession roads bordering
Ste-Rose. Snow Buntings are notoriously skittish but I found 2 rather
accomodating Snow Buntings perched on branches along Ste-Rose between Concession
20 and Concession 19. It surprisingly allowed for a close approach.
The most unusual sighting for me this weekend was a male
Northern Harrier at the Hilda Road feeders. It flew slowly from the left and
circled behind trees near the feeders before flying right over me. At first I
thought it was a hawk as Coopers and Sharp-shinned have been known to frequent
the feeders. I waited to see if it would come back but didn't see it again.
Thanks.
One of the very approachable Snow Buntings.

>From Hwy 417 east of Casselman take exit 58 and proceed north on Cty Rd 8
for about 1 km until you come to Concession 20 Rd in the middle of the long
curve. Turn right (east) on Concession 20 Rd. You will find Concession 19 Rd
just north of 20.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Help Wanted: Searching for Eastern Loggerhead
Shrikes
From: "Jessica Steiner" <jessica(AT)wptc.org>
Date: 31 Mar 2008 10:57am
A reminder to all birders that Eastern Loggerhead Shrikes are already
starting to make their way to their breeding grounds in Ontario, and should
be starting to arrive soon. Please report any sightings of this endangered
bird to Wildlife Preservation Canada on our toll free number 1-800-956-6608
or by e-mail to jessica(AT)wildlifepreservation.ca. We are especially
interested in any bands seen, so PLEASE have a careful look for bands and
report this with your sighting.
Historically shrikes occured across southern Ontario, with breeding
populations in the Carden, Napanee and Smiths Falls Plains/Alvars; Pembroke
and Renfrew area; Grey and Bruce Counties and Manitoulin Island. Due to
limited resources most of our search effort has focused on the 2 remaining
core areas (Carden and Napanee Plains/Alvars). It is our hope that through
interested birders and naturalists groups, we can get more sets of
experienced "eyes" out there looking for shrikes across southern Ontario.
If you live in the Napanee, Pembroke, Renfrew or Smith Falls areas and would
like to join the Adopt-a-Site program and survey specific shrike habitat
patches over the summer, please contact me.
For more information on this unique and rare bird, their habitat, and
current recovery efforts, go to www.shrike.ca <http://www.shrike.ca/> .
Thank you in advance for your help.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Ottawa - Snowy Owls and other birds (slight
correction)
From: "Ott User" <willott123(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 31 Mar 2008 10:23am
Oops. The cooperative Snow Buntings were seen between Concession 20 and 21
(not 19...a typo) along Ste-Rose street. With the rain and milder weather
this could be the last week to see the Snowy Owls east of Casselman. As
Jacque Bouvier's earlier email stated, the Snowy Owls are not hard to find
as you can see a number of cars parked along the road (see Ottawa directions
below) on most nice days during the week in the very late afternoon (4 - 5
pm). Since this could be the last chance to see the owls, thought I'd
share. Thanks.

the way up to Ste-Rose street. The third can be found along Concession 19
just past the barn after you turn left from Ste-Rose road. May heve to look
into the field as it often perches on the ground.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Pied-billed Grebe etc. - Stratford
From: Steve Thorpe <sthorpe3(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 31 Mar 2008 12:50pm
More migrants are returning to the Stratford area. This afternoon I saw my
first Pied-billed Grebe on Lake Victoria directly north of the Festival Theatre.
Also on the lake were 4 Hooded Merganser, 7 Wood Ducks, 2 Bufflehead, 1 Common
Goldeneye, 3 American Black Duck along with Mallards and Canada Geese. I saw
or heard Killdeer, red wings, grackles, robins.
Lake Victoria can be reached from Ontario Street (Hwy 7/8) by turning north on
Front Street and then right at Lakeside Drive. Parking is available along
Lakeside Drive.
