[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Great Blue Heron - Barrhaven From: Patrick Blake <pjblake22(AT)hotmail.com> Date: 1 Apr 2008 5:16am Along with the "balmy" weather, another sign of spring, a single Great Blue Heron, flew over Jockvale Road heading west towards the Stonebridge Golf Course in Barrhaven. This is the first heron I've seen this year - maybe spring actually will arrive soon. DIRECTIONS: From 416N, exit at Bankfield Rd, turning right towards Prince of Wales Dr. At the light, turn left onto Prince of Wales. Turn left onto Jockvale Road at the first light. The heron flew over the road approximately 3/4 km up the road, near the beginning of the Stonebridge Golf Course & Country Club. Note: I work in this area, and some of the golf course ponds are still frozen. If the heron is staying in the area, it will likely be found at one of these ponds, assuming there is open water in the area. It may also be found along the Jock River, which is open in some places. _________________________________________________________________ Enter today for your chance to win $1000 a day—today until May 12th. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Ross' Goose - Sault Ste. Marie, ON From: "McIlwrick, Ken" <kmcilwri(AT)NRCan.gc.ca> Date: 1 Apr 2008 8:54am Hi Folks, Yesterday a white morph adult Ross' Goose was observed resting and feeding with a few aggressive Canada Geese on a scant patch of newly exposed grass, on the south (river) side (along the building wall) of the OMNR District Office in Sault Ste. Marie, ON. It remained on this spot for a few hours, but just after 3:45pm it flew off. My daughter and I had some nice views of it, as did a number of OMNR staff who could easily view it from a common room in their office. Some nice pictures were taken and sent to Ken Abraham for comments. This goose was not observed this morning, after a quick scan of the river front, but a number of new birds for the season were present (yesterday was a big day for Canada Geese and a number of other migrants heading north). Birding has been extremely slow and quiet in the Sault for some time, but the last two days have given us hope! Directions: Once in Sault Ste. Marie, locate the Queen Street - Church Street intersection. Turn south on Church Street and follow it in a southerly direction (towards the river) for 250m where it dead ends. The Canadian Bush Plane Heritage Museum is on the right (west) and the OMNR office is on the left (east). Park in the OMNR visitor parking. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]GBHE - Northeast Oshawa From: "Heather Ray" <mygr8or(AT)sympatico.ca> Date: 1 Apr 2008 6:09am Yesterday evening at 6pm I watched as a pair of Great blue heron's emerged from the fog, flying low and slow over the Legends Centre. They were heading east toward the small pond, located behind the Home Depot. Northeast corner of Harmony & Taunton Roads, Oshawa, ON Happy birding! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Re: [Ontbirds] Bohemians and Cedars -Toronto - Leslie and Lawrence Update From: Donald Davis <donald_davis(AT)yahoo.com> Date: 1 Apr 2008 7:24am I dropped in on this location yesterday (March 31st). I parked in a very small parking lot to the west of the condo exiting off of Lawrence Ave and directly facing the flowering crab trees. It was a quiet time of the day (2:30 pm), and I am always respectful and discreet when entering private property. Initially there were just a few birds - clearly they had been disturbed by someone shortly before I arrived. My car acted as a blind, and gradually, there were at least a dozen robins feeding, with a mourning dove also sitting in the tree and cardinals and red-winged blackbirds singing in the area. After about 5 minutes, a flock of about 30 - 35 waxwings flew in together, with a few Bohemian waxwings. They were disturbed after 5 minutes of viewing and all birds except one apparently very hungry cedar waxwing flew off. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Black Vulture - Beamer Conservation Area From: "Ian Richards" <ianrichards(AT)cogeco.ca> Date: 1 Apr 2008 5:12pm Hi everyone, A Black Vulture was seen flying past the hawk tower at Beamer Conservation Area, south of Grimsby, at 1:10 p.m. today (April 1). The bird was identified by Geoff Carpentier and seen by myself and three others. It was initially seen flying west, but then was spotted flying back eastward a few minutes later. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Re: Guelph Black-crowned Night Heron and more From: macpherm(AT)uoguelph.ca Date: 1 Apr 2008 4:39pm On Monday March 31st while walking home along the speed river near Gordon St. at about 10pm myself and Holly Dodds saw the Black-crowned Night Heron hunting near the bridge at Gordon st along with a Great Blue Heron. The bird stayed for around 2hrs until flushing to some trees on the south side of the river not to be rediscovered. Upon searching for the night heron again today (April 1st) around 3pm east from the Gordon intersection of the river along where it turns into the Eramosa River, I got to see one Belted Kingfisher, another Great Blue Heron, a pair of Ring-necked Ducks and a pair of Common Goldeneye along with multiple Common (5) and Hooded(4) Mergansers.
