Subject: [Ontbirds]Eurasian Wigeons @ Presqu'ile
From: Fred Helleiner <fhelleiner(AT)trentu.ca>
Date: 2 Apr 2008 12:48pm
This morning there was a pair of wigeons at the west end of the High
Bluff Campground at Presqu'ile Park. The drake was a Eurasian Wigeon,
but the pair flew off (together) before I could identify the female as
to species. Later in the morning a lone drake Eurasian Wigeon was among
the many ducks at the end of Lilac Lane. It was also visible from the
calf pasture viewing platform.
Presqu'ile Park can be reached by following the signs from
Brighton. Locations within the Park are shown on a map in the tabloid
that can be obtained at the Park entrance. Lilac Lane is not marked on
the map because it is technically not in the Park. It runs off Bayshore
Road at 42 Bayshore Road.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Bruce Peninsula - Cedar & Bohemian Waxwings
From: Kristin Maling <kristin(AT)theboyk.net>
Date: 2 Apr 2008 1:26pm
This past weekend I spent a good amount of time touring the Bruce
Peninsula. Apologies for being a little late on this posting, didn't
get home until later Monday night and wasn't able to get to it
yesterday. Anyway, while many of the hot spots are still ice covered
(though, really starting to break-up), the signs of spring were all
around (ie. red-winged blackbirds & robins everywhere). A couple of
notes...
- In an small, open field, just off HWY 13 between Sauble and
Southampton, I came across a herd of about 8 deer (not birds, I know...)
- Sauble River is completely open and held numerous Canadian Geese &
Buffleheads (went back many times over the weekend and they were
always there).
- At the small conservation area (John's Lake...Dave's Lake...can't
remember the name right now), off HWY 13, just north of South
Oliphant Road, were a flock of about 7-10 wild turkey.
- The Rankin River, between Boat Lake and Issac Lake (where the
historical plaque/bridge is off HWY 13 between Oliphant & Wiarton) is
completely open and held numerous Canadian Geese & Buffleheads (went
back many times over the weekend and they were always there).
- In Colpoy's Bay, at the dock at 9 & Mallory Beach Road, there's a
small amount of open water here (just to the west of the dock). Just
a solitary Buffelhead looking for food (throughout the day).
Everything north of Cape Croker (both Georgian Bay and Lake Huron
sides) was completely ice covered still (some areas were broken ice,
but heavily covered). Little Tub Harbor in Tobermory is starting to
break up quite a bit though.
And, a highlight for me, for the weekend, was a flock of 35+ cedar
waxwings and 5+ bohemian waxwings feeding at a tree on the corner of
HWY 9 & Mckague Road at Barrow Bay, about 10 minutes south of
Lionshead. They were just feasting away. I stayed there for about 45
minutes as the sun was going down. It was a wonderful sight and very
exciting after a rather uneventful day. I was able to get a few
photos of both the cedars and bohemians, if anyone's interested
(http://www.flickr.com/photos/theboyk/). I went back the next day (a
number of times) and didn't see them again.
That was about it. Nothing out of the ordinary, but things should
start picking up in the area with the migration and the open water
(as the temperatures seem to have shot up since the weekend and the
ice and snow is really starting to melt away...especially with all
the rain on Monday).
Regards,
Kristin.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Port Perry lagoons permits 2008
From: "Geoff - Birds" <avocet(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 2 Apr 2008 2:36pm
I have just been advised that the permits for access to the Port Perry lagoons
will be available starting tomorrow, April 3rd. A new lock code will be provided
when you purchase your permit.
Permits must be purchased in advance of entering the lagoons. Each individual
must have his/her own permit. They cost $5.00 as they did last year.
The permits may be purchased at the Durham Region Transfer Site located at 1623
Reach Rd, Port Perry during the following business hours .... Tuesday,
Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Thursday from
8:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. To get to the transfer station, travel north on Hwy 12 past
Port Perry [Hwy 7A] to the next traffic lights [Regional Road 8 = Reach Rd.]
and travel east to #1623 on the north side of the road.
The lagoons are located one road north of the transfer site east off Hwy 12 on
Concession Rd. 8 [don't get confused as, despite the fact that these roads are
both numbered "8", they are two different roads - one is a regional paved road,
the other a dirt concession road.]

Subject: [Ontbirds]Bonaparte's gulls Amherstview
From: Paul Mackenzie <mackenzp(AT)queensu.ca>
Date: 2 Apr 2008 3:11pm
Here the snow and ice are in fast retreat and although we have seen
no Bonaparte's Gulls on the opening water of Lake Ontario yet, about
30 were feeding at the Amherstview sewage lagoon April 2. Also there
among many ducks were a pair of Northern Shoveler and a male
Canvasback. Observered by Joel Ellis, Bud Rowe, and P. Mackenzie
Amherstview lagoons can be found south off Taylor-Kidd Blvd west of
Coronation Blvd and not far east of County Road 6. It is not
necessary to enter the locked gate to see the birds at the nearest
pond beside the water treatment building there.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Barrow's Goldeneye, Ottawa, Rideau at Strathcona
Park
From: Nicholas von Maltzahn <nvmottawa(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 2 Apr 2008 1:32pm
This afternoon (ca. 4:10) a male Barrow's Goldeneye was on the Rideau River at
the very north end (downstream) of Strathcona Park, just off the edge of the ice
there. (I haven't seen a Barrow's along the Rideau since the end of January.)
Directions (from NeilyWorld): From Highway 417 (The Queensway) take exit 118
(follow the signs for Nicholas Street). Go northwest 1.3 km to Laurier Avenue
and turn right or northeast onto it. Proceed 1.2 km to Range Road and turn right
or southeast onto it. Travel 0.4 km southeast on Range and turn left or
northeast at Somerset Street East into the parking area of Strathcona Park. (Or
on Range Rd you can turn off and park already at Osgoode [the first left] and
cut over to the north end of the park.)

Subject: [Ontbirds]Hermit Thrush, Winter Wren; Thickson's Woods,
Whitby
From: Steve LaForest <stevelaforest(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 2 Apr 2008 3:10pm
Hello Ontbirders: Who in their right mind ventures into a woodlot during gale
force winds? Just birders (at least, those of questionable sanity!) Yesterday
afternoon (Tuesday April 1), I visited Thickson's Woods Nature Reserve (Whitby)
in hopes that the earlier burst of spring weather had lured some unsuspecting
spring migrants into our wintry clutches. Sure enough, a Hermit Thrush and a
Winter Wren were present, despite the stormy skies and icy winds. Both birds
were around the brushpiles just south of the Bird Sightings Book, near the main
trail. Other recent arrivals included a dozen Golden-crowned Kinglets, Brown
Creepers (3), and Song Sparrows (4). There were also a number of other
passerines attracted by feeders, and the nesting Great Horned Owls have been
seen regularly. The adjacent Corbett Creek marsh had Hooded Mergansers (3 pairs
plus 2 unattached females) and a good variety of waterfowl was visible from the
lakeshore bluff. Directions (courtesy of Dennis Barry & Margaret Carney):Exit
Hwy 401 onto Thickson Road South in Whitby. Proceed south past Wentworth
Street to the Waterfront Trail. Turn left (east), drive to the designated turn
around, and park on the north side of the road. Enter the woods on a path from
the south side, about 200 m east of Thickson Road. Follow the trails through
the woods, some of which access the Lake Ontario shore. Please stay on the path
and record your observations in the Bird Sightings Book. To view the beaver
pond and Corbett Creek Marsh, continue east about 100 m past the entrance to the
woods. The meadow is across the Waterfront Trail immediately north of the
woods. The meadow entrance is directly across the waterfront trail from the
entrance to the woods. To view a map of Thickson's Woods, visit the website at
