Subject: [Ontbirds]Ottawa - Few Spring birds and Snowy Owl update
From: "Ott User" <willott123(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 9 Apr 2008 9:54am
Hi.
Just a follow-up to my last email regarding the Snowy Owls east of Casselman. A
good indicator of Spring is that the 3 Snowy Owls that have become a regular
fixture in the area the last several months appear to have left. For the past 2
- 3 months, 3 Snowy Owls had staked out territory at 3 spots along the block of
farm fields borderd by Concession 20, Ste-Rose Road and Concession 19. The
darkly barred, rather "friendly" Snowy Owl was last seen by a group of 5 people
last Saturday. The whiter Snowy Owl, the one usually perched on Concession 20
near the corner of Ste-Rose Road was also seen the same day. Both owls were no
longer seen on Sunday as reported by someone I know. The 3rd Snowy Owl, the one
that hung out near the barn on Concession 19 was last seen by 3 people last
Thursday and not seen since. I did spot one much whiter Snowy Owl along
Concession 20 on Monday. I don't believe I have seen this owl previously.
There are a few lingering Horned Larks in the area, Red-winged Blackbirds of
course, a few Kildeer and a Northern Harrier actively hunting. Thanks.

Directions: From Ottawa, take Hwy 417 past Casselman and get off at exit 58.
Turn left onto Cty Rd 8
until you come to Concession 20 Rd in the middle of the long
curve. Turn right on Concession 20 Rd. You will find Concession 19 Rd
just north of 20.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Great Egret in Napanee
From: "beth mcpherson" <bethm(AT)ihorizons.net>
Date: 9 Apr 2008 2:10pm
Thought I saw a great blue heron coming along the river-I couldn't believe it -
as it came closer and passed by me it was a great egret.I tried to follow it as
it flew east but couldn't find it. If I find it east of here I'll pass along
it's location

Subject: [Ontbirds] Wood Frogs, many waterfowl, incL a BLUE-WINGED
TEAL--Cranberrry Marsh, Whitby-Apr.9
From: "Doug Lockrey" <lockrey33(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 9 Apr 2008 3:36pm
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the low fast "quacking" of several Wood Frogs,
the calls emanating from just south of the north platform on the west side of
Cranberry Marsh.
My somewhat crippled right leg allowed me to hop along to the south
platform--great viewing of waterfowl--7 Am.Coots, many of each of Ring-neckeds,
Shovelers, Northern Pintails, Scaup spp., Gadwalls, Mallards, Blacks,
Am.Wigeons, Green-winged Teals, a few Redheads, Wood Ducks, one Hooded
Merganser, and a BLUE-WINGED TEAL had been seen from the north platform.
Just east of Lakeridge Rd. in southwest Whitby, along Victorias St., turn south
down Hall's Rd. toward the lakefront, parking at either roadside parking area.
Doug Lockrey, Whitby

Subject: [Ontbirds]Little Gull - Whitby - Sobey's "Pond"
From: "John Stirrat" <john.stirrat(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 9 Apr 2008 1:47pm
Around 3:20 today, I had one Little Gull with two Bonaparte's Gulls and a
Caspian Tern along with many Ring-billed Gulls on the south side of Sobey's
"Pond" in Whitby.
The bird was clearly smaller than the Bonies and conveniently flapped its
wings a few times to reveal the black undersides.
Earlier, I had two Eastern Towhees and at least 6 Fox Sparrows at Thickson's
Woods in the brush pile on the south most path.
There were two Winter Wrens and a White-throated Sparrow there too.
There was a Field Sparrow being harassed by the "resident" Song Sparrows
around the "beaver dam".
I finished off at Hall's Road and along with the many ducks there was an
Osprey circling the marsh.
Directions:
Sobey's "pond" is the large puddle located north of Victoria Street at the
corner of Montecourte Street and Nordeagle Avenue. Montecourte Street is the
third light west of Brock Street (not Brock Road in Pickering) north off
Victoria. Victoria is just south of the 401.
Thickson's Woods is located south of the 401 at the foot of Thickson Road in
Whitby.
Cranberry Marsh is accessed from Hall's Road south off Victoria Street just
west of Lynde Shore Conservation Area.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Great Gray Owl, River Rd Ottawa
From: "Langis Sirois" <lsir(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 9 Apr 2008 5:48pm
Hi all.
While having my car serviced yesterday I talked to a member of the
team there, Todd Davy, who is interested in birds. Todd told me that
on Sunday afternoon, April 6, he saw and photographed a Great Gray Owl
which was sitting on a utility wire along River Rd South of Ottawa;
last night he sent me photos that he had taken. Todd is not a
subsriber to this forum and we agreed that I would relay the
information.
I checked the area this morning and again in late afternoon, with no
luck. There is good hunting habitat for this bird at the place where
Todd saw it and around that area, but, given that this is already late
for this bird to linger around and the very mild weather we have had
since Sunday I think it is much likely that this bird has moved on.
In any case, here are directions for people who would like to try for
this bird. Take Riverside Dr. in the South direction and drive all
the way to the end of that road when it joins River Rd, past the
Ottawa International Airport; keep right on River Rd and drive an
additional 4 or 5 kilometers; you will then see a small mall with an
Independant Grocer on you left and Earl Armstrong Rd thereafter; the
bird was seen sitting on a utility wire along River Road about half a
kilometer South of that area.
Good luck and good birding.
Langis Sirois, Ottawa
