Subject: [Ontbirds]Spring Caspian Tern - Port Burwell Harbour
From: Joe Stephenson <joestephenson11(AT)mac.com>
Date: 12 Apr 2008 1:20am
11 April 2008
Hello All,
Ron Allensen and I spotted the first spring Caspian Tern in Port
Burwell today at 2:30 pm April 11th, 2008, It was overcast and about
15C with light winds.
It came into the harbour and landed immediately with a group of
Bonaparte's Gulls.
The large size, thick orange bill, and black legs confirmed it as a
Caspian (photo available).
According to the BIrds of Elgin County, this represents a new early
spring siting date.
Other birds in the harbour at the time included an American Coot and a
male Horned Grebe and seven Wood Ducks.
Purple Martin and Tree Swallows were also observed in flight overhead.
Total species for our day of local birding included 65 species,
including six late Pine Siskins, Eastern Towhee, Field Sparrow,
Chipping Sparrow, Northern Mocking Bird, Yellow-rumped Warbler,
Carolina Wren, Eastern Meadowlark, Canvas Back, and Green-winged Teal.
Happy Birding,
Joe Stephenson & Ron Allensen
Directions,
Port Burwell is at the south terminus of Highway 19 on the northern
shore of Lake Erie. This is south of Tillsonburg.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Great Egrets - Presqu'ile
From: Donald Davis <donald_davis(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 12 Apr 2008 5:28am
Oblivious to the sounds of the construction of the new
Presqu'ile Marsh Boardwalk, just 30 feet away, two
male great egrets put on displays and battled for
territory on the edge of the marsh east of the main
park road on Thursday. Magnificent!
Construction will end shortly as the nesting season in
the marsh begins and start again next winter. Since
June 2007, $240,000. of required $360,000. has been
raised, in part thanks to a very generous initial
donation by local birdwatcher Audrey E. Wilson of
Cobourg (now dealing with a very serious illness).

Subject: [Ontbirds]birds north of Bradford,Ont.
From: "Peter Wukasch" <wukasch.family(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 12 Apr 2008 2:39pm
This afternoon I drove to the "Road Closed" sign on the 10th Line of
Bradford-West Gwillimbury east of Highway 11. In the wet field on the right just
past the last house going east there was a large gathering of waterfowl -
mostly Mallards and Can. Geese with smaller groups of Lesser Scaup, Blue-winged
Teal, Northern Pintails, and American Widgeon. A male Wood Duck also flushed up
from the ditch on the left side of the road. As well there were at least 50
Rusty Blackbirds in the trees edging the wet field and two Greater Yellowlegs
that flew in as I was leaving. I then drove back to Hwy. 11 and went up to the
13th Line. I turned right and continued east across the 20th Sideroad, past the
rail tracks, and on the right, in the wet field behind the houses on the right
was a pair of Sandhill Cranes bugling and doing their courtship dance quite
close to the road. Besides their stately bowing and covorting in the air, one
was picking up bits of corn stubble and flinging it into the air. For the last
three years there has been a small group of cranes in the vicinity both in
spring and fall, and I would not be surprised to find them breeding there. I've
heard that locating a nest is not easy, especially in that area where there is
little accessibility to the most likely breeding sites.
Go north on Hwy. 400 to County Road 88 and exit right towards the town of
Bradford. Turn left at the lights at the 10th Sideroad and go north to the 13th
Line. Turn right and continue past Hwy.11 to the 20th Sidroad past the RR
tracks. To get to the 10th Line, go back to Hwy.11 and head south back towards
Bradford. These roads are quite rutted right now so be careful.
Peter Wukasch

From: Wayne Renaud <wayne(AT)renaudwebber.com>
Date: 12 Apr 2008 7:38pm
Between waves of rain showers I barely managed a quick walk out the end
of the peninsula. Highlights included 6 Common Loons, 107 Red-necked Grebes
and 13 Horned Grebes ... also two Bonaparte's Gull flying nne about 100
meters offshore were accompanied by a Little Gull (all in breeding plumage).
There were at least 30-40 Tree Swallows (with at least one Bank Swallow and
3 male Barn Swallows) feeding over the peninsula in more shelter bay/marina.
(I also picked up my first spring Purple Martin over Rattray Marsh at 7:00
pm this evening).
Directions:
the entrance to the park is directly off of Kipling, so keeping on driving
to parking lot a the end of road (well past the Catholic School).
