[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Great Egret - Stratford From: Steve Thorpe <sthorpe3(AT)hotmail.com> Date: 15 Apr 2008 8:26am There was a single Great Egret near the ponds on the north side of Gallery Stratford this morning. On Lake Victoria, about 500 m west of that were 2 Double-crested Cormorants, the first of the season. Gallery Stratford is on Romeo Street about 0.5 km north of Ontario Street (Hwy 7/8) in Stratford. Lake Victoria can be reached from Ontario Street by travelling north on Front Street to Lakeside Drive. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds] Probable Henslow's Sparrow-Woodworth Side Rd., Port Burwell From: Aaron Allensen <bjbird9(AT)hotmail.com> Date: 15 Apr 2008 1:19pm Hello Birders: On returning from an outing this morning to concession 6 west of Walsingham to view the Greater Yellow-legs posted yesterday we were driving slowly on Woodword Side Rd. north from Nova Scotia Line(County Rd 42) west of Port Burwell. Woodword is not an all season Road and runs through a large expanse of corn stubble at that point, with weedy and grassy wet ditches and a few clumps of red dogwood and low shrubs. We flushed a short -tailed sparrow on the west side of the vehicle which flew along low off the ground a short distance and landed slightly infront of the vehicle about 3 feet off the ground in a dead raspberry cane. The initial impression of the sparrow was a totally coloured yellow head, as if the whole head had been dipped in yellow with a paler chin. A small area of the upper breast was lightly streaked but most of the breast was unmarked, with a slight band of narrow streaking at the sides below the wing. The lower mandible was pink with the upper bill slightly darker. Legs were pinkish . There was a white eye ring and wisker lines. The wings were somewhat rusty brown with no noticeable white. Alister Dennis-Grantham and myself observed the perched bird from the vehicle with field glasses , from about 20 feet for perhaps 20 to 30 seconds. His sister Clare also observed the bird with her naked eye. I remarked to Alister, "Look at that head, Have you ever seen one of those before?" Alister is 11 years old and already a very good birder but his response was in the negative. In our initial excitement we all made the error of looking in our field guides at the same time and we lost the bird. We exited the vehicle and flushed a common snipe from beside a large pool of water in the corn field. We searched up and down the roadway and adjacent fields for about an hour, trying to refind the bird. We turned up a pair of song sparrows, two savannah sparrows and several horned larks but could not relocate our first sparrow. It was sunny, about 1:30 p.m. with light winds, about 8to 10 degrees C. when we left the sight. I realize how unusual this sparrow is and considered the Nelson's and Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed. However the breast was mostly white and streaking was minimal under the throat and to the side. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who may have an educated opinion or expertise on this sparrow. We will certainly be rechecking the location for future sightings. Ron Allensen, Port Burwell Directions; Port Burwell is on Lake Erie at the southern terminus of hiway 19 south of 401 from Ingersol exit. Proceed through town and turn right to cross the bridge. Proceed up the hill on Nova Scotia Line,(County Rd. 42) round two turns going past Browns Rd. continue on 42 for about a mile. Woodword Side Rd goes north only(right) off of 42. It is wet gravel and sand. about a quarter mile up the road 200 feet past the concrete culvert is the spot the bird was sighted. _________________________________________________________________ If you like crossword puzzles, then you'll love Flexicon, a game which combines four overlapping crossword puzzles into one! http://g.msn.ca/ca55/208_______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Ottawa - E. Bluebirds, Savannah Sparrow, Wilson's Snipe From: Patrick Blake <pjblake22(AT)hotmail.com> Date: 15 Apr 2008 6:14pm I'll start this report with a very exciting sighting for me on my way home from work. I was coming down Prince of Wales Drive near Barrhaven, following alongside the Rideau River, where I spotted two adult OSPREYS hunting at two different spots along the river. Later in the afternoon, I relocated one of them near the Chapman Hills Conservation Area on Prince of Wales Drive. This is likely the same one that I heard was spotted further downriver near Nicholl's Island at Manotick. I returned to Earl Armstrong Road to search once again for the E. BLUEBIRDS that I had seen this past weekend. Luck was on my side yet again, and I found an adult male and female along the fence line. I parked there and watched the two flit around from the ground to the fence, then to a nearby bush and back to the fence. At one point the male perched on the post directly across the road from where I was parked and posed for at least twenty beautiful photos. All the while this was going on, I was aware of a WILSON'S SNIPE calling somewhere off in one of the fields beyond the tree line. The call was the unmistakably "sci-fi UFO" sound the snipe makes when it is doing its courtship flight. Unfortunately I did not actually see the bird, but the courtship call continued the entire time I was parked watching the bluebirds - probably thirty minutes or longer. I continued on down Earl Armstrong to High Road and parked at the end of the road. There I found another male E. BLUEBIRD and three SAVANNAH SPARROWS foraging along the roadside. Of course, the usually AM. ROBINS and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS were also in the field, as was a single SONG SPARROW and a number of EUROPEAN STARLINGS. The sun was setting at this point, so I headed back home. Before I left, however, I saw what I am confident was an E. KINGBIRD on a tree limb. The tail was too long to be a red-wing, and it was bobbing its tail while it chirped. In the fading light I did see through my binoculars a dark cap and upper body with a whitish underbody. I can not be 100% on this, but the behaviour, shape, and size, were right for a kingbird. DIRECTIONS: MapQuest "Earl Armstrong Road & High Road." Watch along the side fence posts for E. bluebirds and maybe even E. meadowlarks. _________________________________________________________________ Find hidden words, unscramble celebrity names, or try the ultimate crossword puzzle with Live Search Games. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Blenheim Lagoons--April 15th--Birds + Permits From: "Irene Woods" <irewoods(AT)ciaccess.com> Date: 15 Apr 2008 10:06pm Hello Ontbirders : Local birders, myself included, have been checking on the water conditions and bird sightings at the lagoon. As usual it is cold and windy there---have your mittens in your pocket ! There are many ducks there at present on all 5 ponds---Yes, there are 5 ! However the water is extremely high, and only suitable for ducks and geese. Those looking for duck species should be pleased with the # of species, and easy viewing of same. For newcomers to Ontbirds, I want to inform you that you must have a 2008 permit to enter the lagoons. These are free and easy to obtain. Only 1 person in the group needs the permit, but that person is responsible for his / her guests. In the last 2 years there has been an ongoing problem with visitors NOT locking the gate when they leave. I can see that this is often because the person has not changed the combination lock #'s---therefore the lock remains "unlocked " ! Let's try to be more careful this season. Thanks. Note: Today the Municipality has closed Lagoon Rd. North of the lagoons, between Allison Line and Middle Line---bridge out. This will probably only affect the local birders--not those using directions from below. Thanks for entering your sightings in the book--this is a great help to those coming in after you. See you there ! ----- Irene Irene Woods irewoods(AT)ciaccess.com Blenheim, ON Chatham-Kent Municipality Directions + Pass Info : Directions; Blenheim is on #3 H [Talbot Rd. ] in Chatham-Kent. Take # 3 H West out of Blenheim, about 1 km. You will see a car wash at the corner of Lagoon Rd., turn right [ North]. Go about !/2 km. and you will see a small locked gate [ see below]. Enter at this gate only. NEW : For those coming by #401. Take interchange #91-which is #40 H North & Communication Rd. South. Travel South, twds Blenheim, a few km. Just as you reach The outskirts of Blenheim, you will see a new "Sobey's " Grocery store. It is at the corner of Allison Rd. Turn right On Allison and travel 2.9 km. This will take you to Lagoon Rd., Where you will see the lagoon property and the small gate [ not the Large gate]. For those who have other "people needs "----the Sobey's store Is open 24 hours each day----has "Hot" and "Cold" deli foods, And a clean public WASHROOM----what more could you ask for ? Gas, you say ?---a few hundred metres from Sobey's, is a No Frills store---they have a gas bar---daytime hours only. ----------------------------------------------------- To obtain permit : Permits are free & are good for 1 year. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Greater Snow Geese - Eastern Ontario From: Brian.Morin(AT)pc.gc.ca Date: 15 Apr 2008 10:38pm Snow Geese were concentrated in two areas of Eastern Ontario today - along the flooded South Nation River north of Fournier and at Green Valley. The numbers were huge. The South Nation birds were on the west side of Cty Rd 15 heading north out of Fournier. The fields have become a large lake at this point and the area will remain flooded for some time yet. The likelihood of the birds remaining in the general area is good. Counting was difficult due to light conditions in late afternoon but about 5,000 birds was a reasonable estimate. Flooded fields just south of Green Valley on Cty Rd 34 had a massive flock on the ground and in the water. There were at least 12,000 and they were present into the evening. The birds occasionally lifted off but were mainly on the ground. This area will also likely remain flooded for a while yet. Brian Morin Cornwall Fournier can be reached from Hwy 417. Take exit 51 north through St. Isidore along Cty Rd 9. Continue to Cty Rd 10. Turn right to Fournier. In Fournier turn left on Cty Rd 15. The area is a short distance north of there. The area on Cty Rd 34 is just south of Green Valley and can be accessed from the south via Hwy 401 at Lancaster, exit 814 and from the north via Hwy 417 exit 35. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
