Subject: [Ontbirds]WW Scoter - Retraction
From: "STAN LONG" <stan.long(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 16 Apr 2008 7:17am
Saw again, this morning, the bird I deemed a WW Scoter when viewing it
against direct sunlight yesterday at Reesor Pond. It was a Canvasback,
but as black a bird as a female WW Scoter tho it's very dark, chestnut
head was evident in the morning sunlight - sorry about that - Stan
Long

Subject: [Ontbirds]Ottawa area - Greater White-fronted Goose
From: "Christina Lewis" <hagenius(AT)primus.ca>
Date: 16 Apr 2008 4:39pm
Hello Ontbirds people,
Today (April 16) a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was swimming in a flooded field
on the east side of Frank Kenny Rd., south of Navan, ON among several thousand
Canada Geese. It was spotted by Bob Cermak, enjoyed by several others including
moi....and is the 1st local report of the season!
Also present at this location were at least 15 Snow Geese. Will the large
numbers of Snow Geese reported from east of Ottawa by Jeff Skevington & Brian
Morin in the past couple of days drop in closer to Ottawa, or will they just
keep heading north?
In the general vicinity of Bear Brook north of Carlsbad Springs, the Cobb's Lake
Creek flood plain east of Bourget, and the South Nation River at Pendleton,
Canada Geese still dominated the scene today, with other waterfowl numbers still
rather small and rather low in diversity. We observed 13 spp. of ducks
including a pair of Gadwall along Frank Kenny, a few American Wigeon, 5 Northern
Shoveler, a slight increase in the numbers of Northern Pintail, Green-winged
Teal and Ring-necked Duck, and other expected dabblers & divers.
A pair of Sandhill Cranes was again feeding in the cornfields on the west side
of Milton Rd. this morning, and the 1st (as far as I know) American Pipit of the
year in our area was heard flying over Milton Rd. as well.
Good birds to all - and enjoy all those that are still to come!
Chris Lewis

exit #41and go left (north) on Boundary Rd. to Carlbad Springs. Right (east) on
#26 Russell Rd. to Frank Kenny Rd. Left (north) on Frank Kenny.

From: "STAN LONG" <stan.long(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 16 Apr 2008 2:36pm
What I first posted as a WW Scoter, then updated to a Canvasback at
Reesor Pond, I believe now to be a hybrid - perhaps a
Canvasback/Ring-necked Duck cross - cheers - Stan Long

Subject: [Ontbirds]Pine Warbler in Omemee area.
From: "Hartley" <bob.mary.hartley(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 16 Apr 2008 4:13pm
Yesterday (April 15) we saw 6 Greater Yellowlegs in a flooded field at the
north east corner of Height's Rd and St Luke's Rd between Lindsay and
Omeemee.
When we arrived home at 6:30 p.m. there was a Pine Warbler feeding on scraps
under the feeders. It was also there at 6:45 a.m. today. They have bred in
the large pines in the area of Emily Park for the past 5 years or so.
Emily Park is north east of Omemee at the junction of roads 10 and 14.
Contact us for more detail if required.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Newmarket and area sightings
From: "Peter Wukasch" <wukasch.family(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 16 Apr 2008 4:36pm
Today I saw a Green-backed Heron fly over as I was passing the intersection of
Bathurst St. and Hwy. 9 in Newmarket. It was heading in the general direction of
several small ponds on the north side of Hwy. 9 east of Bathurst. Seems a few
weeks early from my recollection ogf arrival dates. There are quite a few
Caspian Terns cruising along the Holland River by the bridge on Bridge St./Hwy.
11 as you enter Bradford.
Location of heron is north on Hwy.400, east on Hwy. 9 to Bathurst St. It was
flying in a NE direction across Bathurst.
Terns are at the bridge as you cross the Holland River coming from Newmarket
into Bradford on Hwy. 11/Bridge St.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Greater Snow Geese Eastern Ontario
From: Janet Margaret Castle <jcastle(AT)ncf.ca>
Date: 16 Apr 2008 6:02pm
On Tuesday morning there were several thousand Snow Geese in the
flooded fields on county road 9 just east of Curran. There were a few
Canada geese, one Crackling goose and a small amount of Northern
Pintails there as well. In addition to these geese, a large flock of
Snow Geese was seen flying just to the west of Alexandria. No geese
were seen in the fields beside highway 34 from Green Valley. A flock
of several hundred were still in the field on School House Road north
of Lancaster.
Directions to Curran flock: Highway 417 exiting north at exit 51 onto
county road 9. The flooded fields are those at the junction with
county road 2.
At exit 35 head south towards Lancaster, passing through Alexandria
and Green Valley. Turn west on Fallow Field Road, south onto School
House Road. Flooded fields on the west held the majority of birds.
Janet
