Subject: [Ontbirds]Prothonotary Warbler - Point Pelee National park
From: "Sarah Rupert" <tanager(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 19 Apr 2008 4:55am
Hi All
I noticed that this hadn't been posted yet - and I did receive the information
second hand. A visitor and beginning birder came into the Visitor Centre
yesterday with a photo of a bird he had taken on the woodland nature trail and
was hoping for some help to identify - it turned out to be a male Prothonotary
Warbler. From what I understand it was in the sloughs on the south end of the
trail, but they have more detailed information at the Visitor Centre.
Good Birding!
Sarah Rupert

Subject: [Ontbirds]Longspurs at Melbourne. Local direction error
From: Doug/Ann <doug.ann.white(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 19 Apr 2008 5:28am
The Longspurs were seen Thursday afternoon, although there was a south wind
Wednesday night.
I made an error in directions. From Highway 2 in Melbourne go SOUTH two roads to
Hyndeman. Not north. It was brought to my attention by someone who couldn't
find Hyndman, but sensibly asked the locals where it was. My apologies to anyone
else who went the wrong way from Melbourne.
>From 401 west of London, and east of Chatham, take the Melbourne road north
nearly to Melbourne. Turn west on Hyndman. Continue to where the hydro lines
cross the road. Just before them look for a cornfield on your right. Watch for
movements between the rows. Listen for singing and groups flying across the road
to the ploughed field opposite.Other birds around include Horned Larks,
Savannah and ,( at least one), Grasshopper sparrows, and Meadow larks In the
area around Bluebirds and Phoebe. The whole square bounded by Melbourne Rd,
Switzer, Mayfair and Riverside Road is worth driving.

Subject: [Ontbirds] Second Marsh - Forster's Tern, Thickson Woods -
Pine Warblers
From: "Norman Murr" <normurr(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 19 Apr 2008 10:19am
Good Day
Today Ian Cannell and I did a short day of birding starting at Second Marsh in
Oshawa where we had a Forster's Tern fly past us on the lake side of the marsh.
On the lake and in and around the marsh we akso found Common Loons, Pied-billed
and Red-necked Grebes, Trumpeter Swans, Wood Ducks, Green-winged and Blue-winged
Teals, A. Wigeons, Ring-necked Ducks, both Scaup, all 3 Mergansers, Ruddy
Ducks, A. Coots, Moorhens, 5 Little Gulls, Caspaian Terns, B. Kingfishers, and a
million Swamp Sparrows.
At Thickson Woods in Whitby we came up with Common Loons, Caspian Tern, Great
Horned Owl, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, E. Phoebe, Hermit Thrushes, Yellow-rumped
Warblers, 6 Pine Warblers, E. Towhees, and White-throated and Chipping
Sparrows.
In and around Cranberry Marsh also in Whitby we found Common Loons, N.
Pintails, N. Shovelers, A. Wigeons, Ring-necked Ducks, Lesser Scaup, Ruddy
Ducks, Osprey, N. Harrier, Caspian Tern, and Savannah and White-throated
Sparrows.
At all these places were many N. Flickers and Ruby-crowned Kinglets as well as
many of the usual suspects.
DIRECTIONS:-
SECOND MARSH IN OSHAWA
If driving east from Toronto on Hwy 401 then exit at Farewell Street (Exit 419)
and drive south to Colonel Sam Drive.
If planning to bird the west side of the marsh then continue on Farewell Street
to Harbour Street, park on the east side of Farewell at the entrance of the
paved foot trail and then follow it to the marsh.
If planning to bird the east side then turn left, east on Colonel Sam Drive and
drive to the General Motors Head Office parking lot. Park at the northwest
corner of the lot and follow the grassy trail from that corner to the viewing
tower.
The trail from the tower runs north into the woods to another viewing tower with
another view of the marsh and of the surrounding woods and wet area.
THICKSON WOODS IN WHITBY
If driving east from Toronto on Hwy 401 then exit at Thickson Road (Exit 412)
and turn right (south). Drive along Thickson Road across Victoria Street E. and
Wentworth Street W. At the next street (road) on your left past Wentworth Street
(Waterfront Trail) turn left onto this road and you are there. Drive straight
down the road and turn around, drive back and park on your right. (DO NOT BLOCK
THE TRAIL AND BE SURE TO LOCK YOUR AUTO).
The entrance to the woods is on the south side of the road and the entrance to
the meadow is on the opposite side.
CRANBERRY MARSH IN WHITBY
If driving east from Toronto on Hwy 401 then exit at Brock Street (Exit 410),
drive south on Brock Street South, cross the bridge over the railway tracks and
drive to Victoria Street West, turn right, west
on Victoria Street west and drive past the marsh to Halls Road South and turn
left, south here and drive to the marked trails that go to the viewing platforms
on the west side of the marsh. There are two platforms here (one at the
northwest corner of the marsh and one at the southwest corner of the marsh) ,
(this is the hawk watching area in the fall). You can also access the lake at
the end of this road and from the south platform trail.
To access the eastern side of the marsh you could walk along the lake end of the
marsh (difficult at times) or you can do the following.
Drive back to Victoria Street and turn right (east) and drive the short distance
to the Lynde Shores Conservation parking lot (fee) on your right. Park here and
walk down the dirt road to the viewing platform at the northeast corner of the
marsh or continue to the lake and the southeastern corner of the marsh (no tower
here).

Subject: [Ontbirds]Carden-Upland Sandpiper& L. Shrike
From: "Anne Anthony" <anthony(AT)cogeco.ca>
Date: 19 Apr 2008 7:28pm
This morning Maureen Smith and I birded the Carden Alvar. On Wylie Rd there
were 4+ Upland Sandpipers both seen and heard, a Vesper Sparrow, Field Sparrows,
Brown Thrashers, Eastern Towhees, Eastern Bluebirds and Wilson Snipe. To the
east of Wylie Rd at a known [but undisclosed] nesting site there was a
Loggerhead Shrike.
Directions: From the Kirkfield Lift Lock go north and turn right(east) on
McNamee Rd then immediately turn left (north) on Wylie. The road north of the
marsh is in poor shape and snow is still present in the shaded areas. Big ruts.
The grader has not been along.

Weather:
Relatively clear with high cloud all day, winds low and NE to sometimes N,
temperatures in the 10-15 degree Celsius range with the breeze off the lake
making it feel much cooler than further inland.
Raptor Observations:
Broad-wing numbers were promising earlier in the day but tapered off to a
trickle by midday. From then onwards, numbers of birds were fewer but
variety was substantially better as we got to 13 species of raptor on the
day.
Non-raptor Observations:
Passerines are becoming more numerous and included a flock of 5-6 Purple
Finch, a Bohemian Waxwing in a small flock of Cedar Waxwing, a Pine
Warbler, an Eastern Phoebe, and singing Brown Thrasher and Field Sparrow.
Good loon numbers flying over, with 22 Common Loon through the day and a
pair of Red-throated Loon in the early morning. Only two cormorants,
singles flying over to the north at 10.35 and 14.40 EDT.
Predictions:
Could be better than today. The results from the New York counts south of
Beamer indicate good numbers of Broad-wings today, which means they could
be at Beamer tomorrow. The weather report for tomorrow no longer includes
showers so, provided winds are favourable, a 4-digit count could occur.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Pine Warblers, Snipe, Thrasher - Newmarket area
From: RON FLEMING <flemingron(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 19 Apr 2008 10:35pm
At the top end of Bathurst Street on Monday, Keith Dunn had nine LESSER
YELLOWLEGS and 25 CASPIAN TERNS. Hochreiter Road was very driveable by mid-week
but, ironically, the many migrating waterfowl that would draw a birder down
that muddy lane are already moving out. On Thursday there were still several
ducks in the flooded field on the south side of the road, but not nearly as many
as last weekend. Species included N. SHOVELER, BW TEAL, GW TEAL, AM. WIDGEON,
BLACK DUCK, and N. PINTAIL.
SAVANNAH SPARROWS have suddenly shown up all along Hochreiter Road and
Ravenshoe Road in south Keswick, singing "So-so-so, Seeeee Saaaay" from several
locations. A BELTED KINGFISHER was heard rattling down the middle of the West
Holland River on Thursday.
Across the WH River and just north of Bradford there was a similar selection
of ducks in the flooded fields south of Line 10 east of Yonge Thursday
afternoon. There was also one GREATER YELLOWLEGS present. In that same area, a
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was calling from the woods on the south side of Line 11
Thursday afternoon about a km east of Yonge. Much farther west on Line 11 (just
northeast of Beeton) I observed my first VESPER'S SPARROW of the season.
The Holland Marsh Wildlife Area was fairly quiet Thursday afternoon but I was
escorted to the boardwalk by several Mourning Cloak butterflies and a host of
singing SWAMP SPARROWS. On the marsh lookout tower I had excellent views of at
least 8 NORTHERN HARRIERS. Two males were demonstrating their spectacular
mating displays, doing precipitous roller-coaster patterns in the sky over the
expansive marshland. Walking back to my van, I was led off trail by a cacophony
of crows that led me to a GREAT HORNED OWL that did not look too happy to be at
the epicentre of their raucous din.
Kevin Shackleton and I had at least three AMERICAN WOOCOCK doing their aerial
displays at sunset Thursday evening near the entrance to Silver Lakes Golf
Course in Holland Landing. After my dog and I went back home to watch hockey,
Kevin checked the north end of 2nd Concession and had a winnowing WILSON'S
SNIPE, first of the year that I know of.
This morning, Allan Roitner and I did a walk through the west side of the
Seneca College property in King City and had a pair of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS
battling for possession of a nesting box with three Tree Swallows (which have
already commandeered all of the other boxes). We also observed two WOOD DUCKS
perched in a tree, an OSPREY sitting on a nest, and heard a WINTER WREN singing
its beautiful song just east of Keele Street. A PINE WARBLER was singing from a
tall stand of conifers on the west side of Keele. There was also a big influx
of Chipping Sparrows and Song Sparrows in the area to add to the growing
symphony of "springed" instruments.
The Cawthra Mulock reserve in northwest Newmarket has a pair of EASTERN
BLUEBIRDS setting up shop at a bluebird box today along the old fenceline east
of the square silo. Along the same row Allan and I heard our first BROWN
THRASHER of the season singing his distinctive couplets amid the overnight
arrival of a FIELD SPARROW choir. Eastern Meadowlarks were heard singing in
several locations. There was also a PINE WARBLER singing from the conifers on
the west side of Bathurst just north of the entrance to the reserve. A single
WILD TURKEY flew across Bathurst while I was there, looking as if he'd been
thrown out of the woods on the west side. Not a graceful flier, the turkey.
Tree Swallows, Eastern Phoebe, Song Sparrow, GB Heron, and Killdeer are back
in countless locations. Lots of stuff still to come, however... How about that
first Yellow-rump, for example?
Ron Fleming, Newmarket
DIRECTIONS: York Region is just north of Toronto and south of Lake Simcoe.
The north end of Bathurst Street is accessed by taking Yonge St. north from
Newmarket. About halfway between Newmarket and Bradford there is a stoplight
indicating Bathurst St. North. Turn right, then a quick left. Bathurst crosses
the RR tracks then runs straight north. Take it to all the way up to the
fields north of Queensville Sdrd. and Albert's marina. Hochreiter Rd. is
directly west of the road into Albert's Marina and is now driveable. The
Cawthra Mulock reserve is about 1 km north of Green Lane on the west side of
Bathurst St. Look for the mailbox marked FALCONFIELD and take that laneway
westward to its end. The Seneca College campus sits on the north side of 15th
Sdrd. in King City. You can park along Keele Street about 1.5 kms north of 15th
and walk the Oak Ridges trail eastward.
