[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Mockingbird pair, Vaughn From: "Monica Connolly" <maccon(AT)sympatico.ca> Date: 23 Apr 2008 2:26pm While sitting in the Toronto Star building driveway late Wednesday afternoon waiting for CAA to replace a blown tire, I saw a Mockingbird with something in its mouth in the bushes north of the entranceway. It flew around a little, perched on the chain-link fence south of the entrance, and was joined a few minutes later by a second one, which had also crossed from the north side. The two sat side by side facing the same direction on top of the fence for a minute or two. Directions: East side of Weston Road, directly south of the bridge over 407; we had been coming east on 407, took the Weston Road off-ramp which ends at the light on Weston Road, and crossed Weston directly into the Star driveway. BTW, the possible Solitaire I partially glimpsed in my Oshawa backyard this winter almost certainly was a grubby Mockingbird, as several of you suggested; some weeks later I got a good look at an unmistakeable Mockingbird in my front yard, and I have a better chance of winning the lottery than of seeing both species at this spot! Sorry for any expectations raised - myself, I was delighted at the first Mockingbird in the neighbourhood. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Ottawa Birds From: Eve Ticknor <sandbird(AT)magma.ca> Date: 23 Apr 2008 8:09pm Late this afternoon I was south of our airport on High Rd off Albion and Earl Armstrong Rd between High Rd and Limebank Rd. On High, near the golf course, I heard the lovely song of a Brown Thrasher and further along the same road, I watched a male Eastern Bluebird at a nest box. Turning down Earl Armstrong Rd, there was a Barn Swallow by the old barn, and another pair of bluebirds hunting near the storage yard. Continuing along, I watched 4 male Wild Turkeys in full display to 7 supposedly disinterested females. No camera, of course! They were in a back field, with 1 male and 2 females in the corn rows. Please note that the section of Earl Armstrong between Bowesville and the S curve west of that intersection is very bad, having been churned up by trucks. Take care with your vehicles, especially small, low ones. Cheers, Eve _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Brighton Wetland and Lagoon From: "Keith Lee" <keith.lee(AT)sympatico.ca> Date: 23 Apr 2008 5:39pm Hi everyone, the wetlands water level has been dropped to last falls levels when we had lots of shore birds, Rod and Maureen went into the wetlands to get an update for me for the weekend therefore I will be open on Friday afternoon from 5pm to 7pm, and Sunday from 9am till 12am. Please don't drive into the wetland, everyone young and old welcome, I have a spare set of Binoculars and my scope is always available. See you there, if these times are not good for you let me know I might be able to set up a time. Cell # 613-391-9142 Home # 613-475-0881 Directions: The Constructed Wetland is located at the SE corner of Brighton. From Hwy 401, take the Brighton exit (Hwy. 30)and follow it south into town. Go south through the two traffic lights, over the railway tracks and follow the main road, now called Prince Edward Street, south. About 1 km south of the tracks, the main road begins to swing to the left and becomes Cty. Rd. 64. As this long turn ends, the constructed wetlands appear on the right side. There is room to park on the edge (shoulder) of the road, but use your own judgment. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]orchard oriole at TO zoo From: "Paul Prior" <onlypnp(AT)sympatico.ca> Date: 23 Apr 2008 7:59pm Posting this because it seems a little early (23rd April) .... there was a male Orchard Oriole at the entrance of the Toronto Zoo this morning (8am). Not sure whether it's worth adding directions to Toronto Zoo, seems a little unnecessary - apologies to anyone who thinks otherwise.
