Subject: FW: [Ontbirds]FW: BURROWING OWL - PELEE ISLAND
From: Bev McBride <foxsparrow01(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 26 Apr 2008 4:52am
Hi Birders,
Everyone should note that Burrowing Owl is classified as an Endangered Species
in Canada, which is the highest level of "at risk" status, except for extirpated
and extinct.
The OFO Code of Ethics (see link) doesn't specifically offer suggestions re.
endangered species showing up as vagrants, but the cautionary principles there
should be considered.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Accessing Pelee Island for Burrowing Owl
From: Allen Woodliffe <awoodliffe(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 26 Apr 2008 6:35am
Birders attempting to access Pelee Island to look for the Burrowing Owl should
be aware that the larger of the two ferries, the "Jiimaan", is in for repairs.
Only the "Pelee Islander" is in operation. It can only take a few vehicles
(about 10), reservations are required and it is usually booked up several days
ahead. Walk-on passengers should have no problem getting passage.
Since the location of the owl is at least 5 kilometres from where the ferry
arrives at West Dock, an option you might consider is to take a bicycle, for
which there is still a fee, but at least you will have some mode of
transportation.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Vanderliek Farm Ponds - Bismark
From: "Diane and Kayo Roy" <kayoroy(AT)niagara.com>
Date: 26 Apr 2008 12:15pm
Albert Vanderliek passed away some 15 months ago and his farm property on
Highway 20 in Bismark has been sold.
I met this morning with the new owner and he made it very clear to me that the
property will be posted out of bounds. He is renovating the home and has rented
it to new residents. The pond will disappear by this time next year as the
land will be farmed.
Birders need to be respectful of the wishes of this new owner and not venture
onto his now private property.

Subject: [Ontbirds] Red-headed Woodpecker, Chesnut-sided Warbler,
Bluebirds, and Photographers - Newmarket
From: RON FLEMING <flemingron(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 26 Apr 2008 12:41pm
I had an interesting experience at the Cawthra Mulock reserve in Newmarket this
morning.
Coming down the trail to where the pond is, I heard the call of a Red-headed
Woodpecker. This hard-to-find species was actually observed by Allan Roitner at
a different location in Newmarket this past Wednesday, so I was immediately on
the alert. (NOTE: I did not post the RHWP sighting for reasons you will
understand after reading the rest of this post.)
I followed the sound of the woodpecker to its source and found a photographer
in a camouflage blind. He was playing tapes of different birds in hopes of
luring them in. He was impressed that I knew my birds by ear. I was not
impressed that he was playing tapes. This, it turns out, is the same
photographer who spent two days earlier this week in a blind parked in the
middle of an open field not more than 7 meters from an active bluebird box - the
only active bluebird box we have ever had at the reserve. He insisted that he
was not stressing the bluebirds. I did not feel the same way.
Since Ontbirds is a not a forum for discussion but for the reporting of
interesting birds, I will not say much more here, but this situation brings up
some very important questions: At which point does passive use of a nature
reserve cross over into the realm of intrusive use? What are the rights of
other hikers and birders when a photographer interferes with their birding or
enjoyment of a local patch? What are the rights of photographers themselves?
I'd be lying if I said I didn't admire the marvellous photos that have been so
generously shared by our many great nature photographers in Ontario.
The most important question of all, however, is this one: What are the rights
of the birds we see, watch, and photograph AND who protects them?
I am well aware that many nature photographers are also environmentalists and
top-notch naturalists. I feel partly responsible for this situation at the
reserve because I mentioned the bluebirds in an Ontbirds post last week. Too
late, I realize that mentioning them may have compromised their situation. I
wrongly accused another photographer of being the bluebird stalker (privately,
but still hurtfully, I imagine) so there is a little more guilt to throw on the
fire. Anyway, 'nuff said, but if anyone wants to comment, e-mail me privately
NOT here on Ontbirds.
Back to my bird sightings...
When I wandered away from the blind, I soon heard a Chestnut-sided Warbler. I
thought it was probably the tapes being played again. Turns out, it was not.
The warbler flew onto an open branch and gave me my earliest-ever
Chestnut-sided. Minutes later I had a Blue-headed Vireo, also my earliest.
This unseasonably warm April has made for some very early arrivals of certain
species. I also had Pine Warbler and many Chipping Sparrows (a great way to
compare their songs is to find a place where you can stand between both
species). There are at least two Brown Thrashers and all sorts of Field
Sparrows at the reserve and, still intact, the pair of Eastern Bluebirds. As I
watched the male over the course of 15 minutes (I was hidden behind a tree well
away from the nesting box), he spent the whole time chasing off several Tree
Swallows and a pair of BH Cowbirds. As the photographer suggested, these latter
birds are more of a threat to the bluebirds than he is...

From: Aaron Allensen <bjbird9(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 26 Apr 2008 10:43am
Spring Birders: A male Indigo Bunting was spotted on the niger tube, Friday
April 25th at 7:00 P.M. at Monarch Landing, Port Burwell. Again on same feeder
8:25 A.M. this morning . TWO males were on the same feeder at 12:20 P.M. Cloudy,
windy,(S-W, 10 to 20 km/hr) 12C. This sighting is perhaps a little early for
the species but consistent with the current bloom sequence of local native and
non-native flora. Ron Allensen
Directions: Monarch Landing is about a mile east of Port Burwell on the
lake road. Port Burwell is located on lake Erie at the southern terminus of
Hiway 19. Take Ingersol exit south from the 401.

From: Paul Pratt <prairie(AT)netcore.ca>
Date: 26 Apr 2008 4:07pm
This afternoon there was a flock of about 30 Willets in the shorebird
cell at Hillman Marsh C.A.
Hillman Marsh is located a few miles north of Point Pelee National
Park. Incidentally the birding was very good at Pelee this morning. We
saw Summer Tanager, both orioles, hundreds of Chipping Sparrows, Wood
Thrush, Indigo Bunting, several Red-headed Woodpeckers, Warbling
Vireo, Eastern Kingbird, and seven species of warbler. The east side
of the tip was the most productive area.

Subject: [Ontbirds] Pelee Island Update - NO Burrowing Owl but a nice
mix of migrants today
From: "Cheryl Edgecombe" <cheryle29(AT)cogeco.ca>
Date: 26 Apr 2008 4:38pm
Posting for Barb Charlton, Rob Dobos, Dave Don and Thomas Crooks
The four along with several other birders were unable to locate the
Burrowing Owl today. A good variety of migrants were seen on the island
though specifically at Lighthouse Point. These include (in no specific
order):
Worm-eating Warbler
Black-and-white Warbler
Northern Parula
Hooded Warbler
Blue-winged Warbler
Nashville Warbler
Palm Warbler
Chestnut-sided Warbler
Yellow Warbler
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Northern Waterthrush
Common Yellowthroat
Scarlet Tanager
White-eyed Vireo
Red-eyed Vireo
Swainson's Thrush
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Lincoln's Sparrow
Thanks to all for scouting out a very difficult place to get to on short
notice! Maybe the little beast ended up on the mainland somewhere.
Regards,
Cheryl Edgecombe
sadly not even voted on the island today

culvert took food from many eager hands. A male Spruce Grouse
near the register box on Spruce Bog Boardwalk allowed great views.
Our best Spruce Grouse viewing came later in the black spruce bog
bordering the north end of Opeongo Road as two calling females and
three displaying males put on a spectacular show.
Species seen today for the first time in Algonquin this spring included:
American Pipit (seen over the Visitor Centre parking lot before
we arrived), Palm Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, and Field
Sparrow.
Thanks to everyone who attended today, and especially to Kevin Clute
for his assistance.

Directions:
Algonquin Park is three hours north of Toronto, via Highways
400, 11 and 60. Follow the signs, which start in Toronto on
Highway 400. From Ottawa, take Highway 17 to Renfrew, then
follow Highway 60 to the park. Kilometre markers along Highway
60 in the Park go from the West Gate (km 0) to the East Gate
(km 56). Get your park permit and the park tabloid (with a map
of birding locations mentioned here) at the gates.
The Visitor Centre at km 43 has recent bird sightings and
information. Exhibits and restaurant are open daily, 10 am to 5 pm,
starting on April 26.

Hello Everyone,
Lamoine Point was a hive of avian activity today. Highlights include:
5 Evening Grosbeaks,
3 Eastern Towhees (my personal favourites)
1 Palm Warbler
4+ Pine warblers
1 Yellow warbler
Yellow-rumped warblers (many)
1 Solitary Vireo
3 Brown Thrashers
1 Cooper's hawk
1 Field Sparrow
Pileated Woodpeckers (calling)
I do not hear many reports from this area so I thought I would put my
two cents in.
Happy Migration!!
Jon
Directions:
Take any street in Kingston down to King St (which becomes Front) at
Days Rd. and follow westward past Bayridge Rd. Eventually you will
find the parking lot. Best action is if you follow the main trail
straight out along the airport until you reach the forest. Follow
until you reach another parking lot and just follow your ears!
