[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]LITTLE BLUE HERON At HILLMAN MARSH / WHEATLEY-BOUND From: "ardenbirds" <ardenbirds(AT)rogers.com> Date: 27 Apr 2008 6:10am At 18.55, on Saturday, April 26th, A LITTLE BLUE HERON flew fast, N/Eastward, 30 m over the heads of 3 observers (Ed, Bob & Michael), towards the Hillman Marsh shorebird habitat (where it did not land). Thanks to Ed's spotting, we had 4 seconds of observation, this writer quickly called it a Little Blue & the others didn't disagree. This writer headed alone into the shorebird cell to scope 62 Willets. From the Hillman parking lot, at 19.25, the Little Blue could be seen flying a circular pattern over the Chesterfield Memorial Bench area & approached to within 200m in good sunlight, then flapped & soared at an elevation of 150 m, N/E & out of sight towards Wheatley. Hillman Marsh is due East of Leamington & S/W of Wheatley. (\__/) ( *V* ) {{ }} ^ ^ "To glimpse is exhilarating. To linger is liberating. These are the good old days." [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Pelee Weekly Report - Week Ending April 23, 2008 (Late) From: Janice.Sarkis(AT)pc.gc.ca Date: 27 Apr 2008 8:45am This is the weekly birding report for the Point Pelee National Park birding area for the week ending April 23, 2008. The beginning of the week brought some excitement in the first male Prothonotory Warbler for the season that was seen and photographed from the south bridge of the Woodland Nature Trail. Then a flock of 37 American Avocet was reported from the shorebird impoundment at the Hillman Marsh Conservation Area. Warm weather, clear nights following the full moon, and south-west winds during most of the week may have seen species fly over Point Pelee to reach their breeding grounds, but a good number of new species for the year were reported during the last week as set out below: Wood Duck - various locations inside and outside the Park Broad-winged Hawk - one circling over the Visitor Centre Parking Lot Black-bellied Plover - a couple dozen at Hillman Marsh American Avocet - originally 37 at Hillman Marsh down to 12 at Wheatley Beach April 23rd Short-billed Dowitcher - one - Hillman Marsh Little Gull - one - mixed in with the Bonaparte's Gulls at Hillman Marsh Caspian Tern - Hillman Marsh Common Tern - Hillman Marsh Forster's Tern - Muddy Creek at Wheatley Harbour Red-Headed Woodpecker - Tip Purple Martin - Onion Fields White-eyed Vireo - Tilden Woods Black-throated Green Warbler - Tip Black-and-White Warbler - Tip Common Yellowthroat - Woodland Trail and Marsh Boardwalk Bobolink - Onion Fields The repairs to the bridge over the Sturgeon Creek have been completed and the regular route to Point Pelee down the Bevel Line to Point Pelee Drive is back open. Thanks to Ross Mackintosh for filling in last week, and for input from Mike Tate on this week's posting. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Britannia (Mud Lake) in Ottawa. N. Waterthrush and more From: Jay Peterson <pulchritudinousparula(AT)hotmail.com> Date: 27 Apr 2008 7:18am Hello Ontbirders, A rather brisk walk through this morning netted quite a few good birds. Six warbler species in the area including a Northern Waterthrush combing the south end of Mud lake about 200m from the pond bridge. I was hoping for a Louisiana but I'll take my FOS Northern. Another first for warblers in the Ottawa area this spring (for me anyway) were 2 YELLOW, one along the south fence by the bike path (near the tennis courts) and the other observed by quite a few people along Cassels Rd in with the parked cars. A BLACK & WHITE was in the woods along with 8 PALM, 8 PINE and countless YELLOW-RUMPED. A nice one for April 27 was a BLUE-HEADED VIREO, also in the south woods. Two WARBLING VIREO, one by Cassels Rd and one in the woods. At the pond bridge in the south woods I had flushed a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON at 7am. Another nice first for me this year was hearing the distinctive one-note call of a VEERY calling in the same vicinity. Very much the usual suspects eleswhere up on the ridge and the filtration plant. Lots of Flickers, Yellow-Rumped, a few RC Kinglets and White-Throated Sparrows. A beautiful day to go out and quite a good amount of birds around today. Keep an eye on the skies for the local Cooper's Hawks that are flying around. Good birding, Jay Peterson Britannia, Ottawa Directions: Mud lake and the Britannia Conservation area are accessible from Britannia road (off Richmond/Carling). Follow that road down to the river and meet Cassels, turn right and you will see the parked cars. The woods are actually pretty dry and almost every area is easily walkable without the use of boots. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Pelee Island highlights - April 24-26 From: "Carol & Jim" <burrellsc(AT)golden.net> Date: 27 Apr 2008 4:54pm Ken and I returned from an excellent weekend of birding on Pelee Island today. Obviously, the Burrowing Owl was the highlight. This bird was just such an incredible find that we still can't quite believe! We found it on April 25 at about 6:50 pm, and by about 7:15 pm had all of the birders(~5) on the island with us viewing it! We first found it at a newly dug irrigation ditch 800m south of Scudder on Centre Dyke road, it was sitting on a snag overlooking the ditch, then flew about 20 feet to the bare field when we stopped the car. When we got out of the car it flew about 50 feet down the ditch and then settled down into a low spot, where it sat with just its head sticking up, until we left it at about 8:15 pm. We checked back first thing (about 6:30 am) on the 26th and several times throughout the day and again this morning, but could not relocate it. Photos have been sent to OFO, and will be sent to OBRC with documentation. To view the pictures now click here: http://www.naturesbestcreations.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=8336#8336 Besides the Burrowing Owl we still had very good bird activity both of the full days we were there (the 25th and 26th) we finished with 128 species on the Island (plus another 22 on the mainland) for the weekend, not bad for April! Here are our (other) highlights: numbers are given for the 25th then 26th (unless otherwise noted) While the 25th was very good, numbers of some of the temperate migrants dropped while diversity of neotropical migrants increased on the 26th. We mostly birded the east side of the island, the best spots for us being Lighthouse point, Loraine Lane, and the municipal campground area (just south of Loraine Lane along the east shore road) Tundra Swan - 1 today in ditch on Mersea road E Red-necked Grebe - 4 on the 26th off lighthouse point Peregrine Falcon - 1 / 1 Sandhill Crane - 8 on the 24th at Tilden's wood Point Pelee Red-headed Woodpecker - 1 / 2 Least Flycatcher -0 / 1 Great Crested Flycatcher -0 / 1 Eastern Kingbird - 1 / 0 White-eyed Vireo - 0 / 4 Warbling Vireo - 0 / 4 Red-eyed Vireo - 0 / 2 Veery - 0 / 2 Gray-cheeked Thrush - 0 / 2 Swainson's Thrush - 0 / 6 Hermit Thrush - 44 / 28 Wood Thrush - 0 / 4 Gray Catbird - 0 / 12 Blue-winged Warbler - 0 / 1 Orange-crowned Warbler - 1 / 1 Nashville Warbler - 14 / 8 Yellow Warbler - 7 / 18 Cape May Warbler - 1 / 0 Yellow-rumped Warbler - 246 / 175 Black-throated Green Warbler - 15 / 8 Blackburnian Warbler - 2 / 0 Yellow-throated Warbler - 1 albilora subspecies on the 25th along East Shore road just north of municipal campground Pine Warbler - 9 / 3 "Western" Palm Warbler - 19 / 31 "Yellow" Palm Warbler - 1 on 25th at same spot as the Yellow-throated warbler Black-and-white Warbler - 3 / 4 Ovenbird - 1 / 1 Northern Waterthrush - 1 / 2 Common Yellowthroat - 0 / 5 Hooded Warbler - 1 on 26th at same spot as Yellow-throated warbler Scarlet Tanager - 0 / 4 Lincoln's Sparrow - 1 / 2 White-throated Sparrow - 320 / 273 Rose-breasted Grosbeak - 0 / 2 Indigo Bunting - 0 / 3 Baltimore Oriole - 0 / 5 possible hybrid Chipping x Clay-colored Sparrow To reach Pelee Island you must take a ferry from Leamington (or Kingsville), then either take the taxi or rent a bike. If you book in advance you can take a car across. We camped at the Anchor and Wheel (northwest corner of Island), as the Municipal campground was closed. Everyone on the island (especially the staff at Anchor and Wheel) were great hosts. If you would like more detailed information please email us privately. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Red-necked Grebes nesting in Bronte Harbour once again From: "Gavin Edmondstone" <sue-gavin(AT)sympatico.ca> Date: 27 Apr 2008 9:01pm This afternoon Sue and I saw a Red-necked Grebe nesting on a floating tire/wheel in the Bronte Outer Harbour Marina...the same place as the last few years. Two tires were put out for the grebes sometime within the last week. The second tire is at the east end of the basin as the picnic dock. This tire is unoccupied. Photographers be aware that this year's nest is not a picturesque affair right now. A lot of the tire is showing and there are large sticks protruding. There are numerous Red-necked Grebes both in the marina as well as out on the lake. One Horned Grebe was observed east of the harbour. Directions: Exit the QEW at Bronte Rd. and go to the lake. The nest is just east of the large yellow building which is the Lighthouse restaurant. By public transport from the Oakville GO Train Station take the number 14 Lakeshore West bus to East St. or Nelson St. (I am not sure which one has a stop.) [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Ontbirds guidelines From: Mark Cranford <mark.cranford(AT)ofo.ca> Date: 27 Apr 2008 9:13pm Birders Over the next few weeks active birders across Southern Ontario will be adding over a hundred new birds to their annual lists. It is always an exciting time. Reporting to Ontbirds can be part of the experience. We surely need some flavour of the migration but with over 2000 potential reporters and millions of birds too many messages and too much detail may be more than we can handle. Please when reporting birds that regularly occur in Ontbirds focus on what makes your report of interest to other birders. First of the season birds should be really early. Complete lists of birds seen probably belong elsewhere (eBird or the bird records compiler at your local nature club come to mind). As always we are looking for rare birds. When reporting special birds please follow our posting guidelines (link is at the bottom of this and every post to Ontbirds). If you include a link to a map or website also include text directions. Include a recognizable location as well as the species name in the subject headers. Remember reports are expected to conform to ethical birding principles. <http://www.ofo.ca/aboutus/ethics.php>. This time of year extra care should be followed when reporting breeding birds especially species of special concern. If after reviewing our posting guidelines you have any questions don't hesitate to contact me. It may take me a bit of time to respond but I will. If you don't get a response check your junk mail filters and email me again.
