Subject: [Ontbirds]OFO trip Prince Edward Point
From: "Terry Sprague" <tsprague(AT)kos.net>
Date: 29 Apr 2008 8:32am
Good morning,
The annual OFO trip to Prince Edward Point is scheduled for this Sunday, May 04,
2008. Due to an increasing weekend work load, this will be the final year in
which I will offer this trip, so if you have not experienced the pleasure of
birding this amazing area in Prince Edward County, plan to do so this year. We
will be meeting at 7:00 a.m. and spending the day birding the Prince Edward
Point area for waterfowl and early May migrants. Several species of warblers are
already present, so the birding should be good.
DIRECTIONS: Take any of the exits off 401 for Prince Edward County and follow
to Picton. At the far east end of Picton, where Highways 33 and 49 converge at
the Stop sign, turn down the big hill (Bridge Street) and turn immediately right
at the bottom of the hill onto Union Street (across from Tip of the Bay).
Follow Union Street out of Picton (becomes County Road 8) for 2.5 km, and turn
right on County Road 17. Follow County Road 17 for 6.5 km and look for the Black
River Cheese sign, and turn left onto County Road 6 and follow for 1 km to the
Stop sign at County Road 13. Follow County Road 13 past Black River Cheese for
23.6 km to the Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area (County Road 13
eventually becomes Long Point Road). Total distance is 33.6 km from Picton, so
bring a coffee (and lunch) - you're a long way from a Tim Horton's ! Washroom
facilities will be provided.
Please ignore any previously published directions on where to meet. We will be
meeting along the side of the road just west of the sharp corner at the Point
Traverse Woods, less than a kilometre from the Prince Edward Point Bird
Observatory. My vehicle is a silver Jeep Grand Cherokee with NatureStuff logos
on the door and I will have a flashing amber light on the roof. If there are any
questions, please e-mail me before Sunday.

Subject: [Ontbirds] White-eyed Vireo/Worm-eating Warbler, Paletta
Park/Shoreacres, Burlington
From: cheryle29(AT)cogeco.ca
Date: 29 Apr 2008 10:52am
This morning on an early morning walk, Arlene McCaw found a White-eyed Vireo in
the cedar shrubs on the west side of
Paletta Park/Shoreacres. When I went to check it out I spished and a
Worm-eating Warbler popped out in the same place.
Lost track of the Worm-eating Warbler but refound the White-eyed Vireo near the
same spot. Warbling Vireo,
Yellow-rumped Warbler and many Swallows, Purple Martins are among migrants there
today.
Directions: From QEW take Appleby or Walkers Line south down to the Lakeshore.
Paletta/Shoreacres is east of Walkers
Line and west of Appleby Line on the south side of Lakeshore Road in
Burlington.
Cheers,
Cheryl Edgecombe

Subject: [Ontbirds]Little Blue Heron back in Port Rowan today
From: Denis Lepage <dlepage(AT)bsc-eoc.org>
Date: 29 Apr 2008 12:38pm
Just a quick update on the Little Blue Heron. The bird was seen flying away,
presumably to roost, last night around 8pm. The bird came back around mid day
today at the Bird Studies Canada's headquarter, and is probably still there now.
If you come to see it, please use BSC's parking lot rather than the cemetery
road. You can walk around the building and use the observation deck. A few
shorebirds have also started to use the pond, including Lesser and Greater
Yellowlegs, and Solitary Sandpiper.
Directions: BSC's office is located at the western end of Port Rowan along Front
Street. The pond is visible from the observation deck on the south-west corner.
To reach Port Rowan, you can take highway 59 south and turn east of Front
Street. BSC's office is a few hundred meters from highway 59, on the south side
of Front Street.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Presqu'ile Western Sandpiper
From: "Don Shanahan" <vic.hide(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 29 Apr 2008 12:57pm
Ontbirders
This morning we found a Western Sandpiper on the beach at Presqu'ile. The bird,
just coming into breeding plumage, is foraging with two Dunlin on the shoreline
and sometimes inland on beaches 3 and 4. The best approach is to park at beach 4
and begin scanning northwards (to the right) as soon as you come out to the
beach.
The way to Presqu'ile Provincial Park is well-signed south of Brighton.

Hi everyone, the wetlands water level has been dropped to last falls
levels when we had lots of shore birds, I will be
open on Friday afternoon from 5pm to 7pm, and Sunday from
9am till 12am. Everyone young and old welcome, I have a spare set of Binoculars
and my scope
is always available. See you there, if these times are not good
for you let me know I might be able to set up a time.
Cell # 613-391-9142
Home # 613-475-0881
Directions: The Constructed Wetland is located at the SE corner of
Brighton. From Hwy 401, take the Brighton exit (Hwy. 30)and follow
it south into town. Go south through the two traffic lights, over
the railway tracks and follow the main road, now called Prince Edward
Street, south. About 1 km south of the tracks, the main road begins
to swing to the left and becomes Cty. Rd. 64. As this long turn
ends, the constructed wetlands appear on the right side.
There is room to park on the edge (shoulder) of the road, but
use your own judgment.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Black Duck X Wood Duck- Hillman Marsh
From: Dean Ware <peleeisbirder(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 29 Apr 2008 7:45pm
Birders,
Tonight I observed an apparent female Black Duck X Wood Duck hybrid at the
shorebird/waterfowl habitat at Hillman Marsh this evening april 29th.
this odd hybrid is in company with a male Black Duck. the bird is about the size
of a black duck but has the shape of a woodduck. overall the bird is brown. If
anyone is going to take photos I'd love a couple.
the Willets left this evening, but then again all shorebirds leave for the night
and come back in the late morning.

I birded Algonquin the past 2 days with Spanish birder, Dani Valverde. We had
some good finds despite birding almost all day yesterday during heavy snowfall.
On Opeongo Road we found 2 Boreal Chickadees at the forest adjacent to the
spruce bog. There at 9 am today was a male Spruce Grouse alongside the road.
Also looking for handouts were 2 Gray Jays. A Merlin was viewed near its
nest-site west of the bridge.
A male Black-backed Woodpecker worked on a tree near the register in the
Spruce Bog yesterday. Today at Km 53.6 a male excavated a hole in a telephone
pole alongside the highway. Ducks seen at various ponds included Black,
Wood Duck, Mallard, Bufflehead, Ring-necked, Hooded and Common Merganser.
Raptors: Merlin, Broad-winged, Red-tailed, Sharp-shinned hawks, Turkey
Vultures. Other sightings were Great Blue Heron, Raven, Crow, Robin,
Solitary Sandpiper, Ruffed Grouse, C Loon, Can. Goose, Grackle, Red-winged &
Rusty blackbirds, Cowbird, Evening Grosbeak, Purple Finch, Goldfinch,
Kingfisher, Blue Jay, Tree Swallow, RB Gull, Creeper, both Kinglets, YR Warbler,
Winter Wren, BC Chickadee, both Nuthatches, Hermit Thrush, Starling, Junco,
Blue-headed Vireo.
Sparrows: American Tree, White-throated, Song, Savannah, Swamp, Chipping,
Field. At 5 pm today in the forest at Hardwood Hill just east of Arrowhon
Road, we had a bonanza of woodpeckers including 2 Pileated, 2 Flickers, 2
Sapsuckers, 2 Downy and a Hairy.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Eastern Wood-Pewee in Guelph
From: Martin Daly <daly(AT)mcmaster.ca>
Date: 29 Apr 2008 10:58pm
I watched a Wood-Pewee foraging in the University of Guelph Arboretum
at midday today, in the woods a couple of hundred meters southeast of
the main visitors' centre.
Awfully early for this species, and it can't have been happy about the
cold!
