Subject: [Ontbirds]Pelee - Tram Changes
From: Michael Carlson <mecec(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 30 Apr 2008 1:25pm
This email was approved by the Ontbirds coordinator.
Birders,
Those planning to come to Point Pelee this year should be aware of
changes in the operation of the tram or transport from the Visitor
Centre to the Tip. These changes are as follows:
1) There will only be one two-car tram operating every 20 minutes.
The other transports were deemed unsafe and were taken off the road.
This means there will be no second tram to handle overflows on the
peak weekends in May as in the past,. For at least the first two
weekends in May, it may be wise to plan on taking the tram 20 minutes
before the time you are interested in. This way you will likely be in
the queue for the tram time you want. According to Marian Stranak,
Superintendent of Point Pelee National Park, the park is negotiating
with a local bus company to provide transport in the unlikely event
that the existing tram fails.
2) The last tram will leave the Visitor Centre at 5 pm. (The first
one still will leave at 6 am until May 20, when it leaves at 10 am.)
3) The tram will no longer stop at the halfway point for people to
embark or disembark.
4) Parks Canada HQ this year rejected Point Pelee's request for a new
transport system, according to Ms. Stranak. She is hopeful and
indicated that the park is committed to trying to implement a new
system. A Friends of Point Pelee representative indicated to me
recently that the organization is considering the possibility of
raising funds for a new tram.
Ms. Stranak indicated that park staff will be looking closely at user
comments concerning the changes in the tram schedule, and assured me
that the park would reconsider these changes if they adversely
affected visitors' experience of the park, based on feedback
received.
Blessings,
Mike Carlson

Subject: [Ontbirds]Tufted Titmouse at Presqu'ile
From: Doug McRae <rdmcrae(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 30 Apr 2008 11:31am
Greetings all,
Bill Gilmour and I saw a Tufted Titmouse at the Presqu'ile lighthouse
this morning, in company with 2 chickadees. From the look of it I
think it is a different bird than the one a few weeks ago. This bird
has less colour on the flanks and perhaps a smaller black forehead
patch. I also checked to see if yesterday's Western Sandpiper was
still present and as of 645 a.m. there were no shorebirds seen on the
beach, but they could be on Gull Island so it might be worth a look
anyway.
Cheers,
Doug McRae

Directions: Presqu'ile is located south of Brighton on the shore of
Lake Ontario. From Hwy 401 take the Brighton exit and head south
into town, then follow signs to the Park. The best beach access for
the sandpiper is the Owen Point Trail parking lot (formerly Beach 4),
and for the lighthouse, take the Park one way loop to the lighthouse/
Visitor Centre, located at the east tip of the peninsula.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Mockingbirds - Leamington
From: "John Zoch" <john.zoch(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 30 Apr 2008 10:46am
This morning a pair of Northern Mockingbirds in Leamington were seen several
times in the area between Queen of Peace School and Todd Pepper's
neighborhood. I saw them most often in the north end of the school yard
ranging between the trees on the West and the shrubs East of the school.
During recess they often flew low over the heads of students in the yard.
Queen of Peace School is at the corner of Ellison and Nicholas. From the
Four Corners go South on Erie to Oak. Turn right and go West to the light at
Oak. Turn left and go South on Sherk to the Sherk Complex on your right and
turn right at the corner. Queen of Peace is a "long" block down at the stop
sign.

From: "Norman Murr" <normurr(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 30 Apr 2008 5:29pm
Good evening
The White-eyed Vireo was still at Shoreacres / Paletta Park at 6 pm. Ian Cannell
and I saw it in the cedars along the main trail to the lake.
While at Old Cut at Long Point earlier in the day we found a Swainson's Thrush
beside the Old Cut Woods entrance and overhead were Chimney Swifts.
We were also told by banding volunteers that the Yellow-headed Blackbird was
still being seen off and on through-out the day in the parking area across from
the entrance and at the feeder beside their building.
We also saw the Little Blue heron at the Bird Studies Canada pond in the early
morning and behind the main building we saw and heard 2 Bobolinks.
We of course also saw many other birds there and if interested see my post see
the Toronto and Southern Ontario Biding on the Outdoor Ontario website
tomorrow afternoon.
Directions:-

Seen and photographed between 7:45am and 10:30am, April 30, 2008. Found by Al
Woodhouse, and viewed by Jim and Carol Burrell.
It seemed out of place amongst the Myrtles, Palms, Nashvilles, and
Black-throated Greens...
Information from Mark Cranford - "The earliest I can find is May 2 from Pelee in
Murray Spier's Birds of Ontario. Bob Curry's book has May 5, 1963 as the
earliest for Hamilton."
It was found on property that is privately owned by a second party, located
about 5km south of the town of Heidelberg.
