Subject: [Ontbirds] Not a Fulvous Whistling-Duck but what? St-Albert
sewage lagoons, East of Ottawa
From: "Langis Sirois" <lsir(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 3 May 2008 8:31am
Good morning all.
This is a follow-up to the 2 messages on this subjet that I sent
Thursday morning.
It is 11:00AM Saturday May 3rd.
Thanks to Bernie Ladouceur and Jan Slumkoski, the bird that I saw
Wednesday evening and reported on Thursday morning, has been refound;
that is the good news, the bad news is that it is not a Fulvous
Whistling-Duck.
Bernie called me earlier this morning. He is not able to send a
message at this time, so we agreed that I would send one.
Bernie and Jan found the bird last night at the St-Albert lagoons; it
was with a male Mallard to which it seemed to be attached; the 2 birds
were at the lagoon that is further away from the entrance than the 5
lagoons that one can see when standing in the middle of those 5; the
two additional lagoons are not visible from that area.
They were able to study the bird from about 100 meters while it was
sitting on the water at the edge of the lagoon and at close range
while it was in flight. Except for a somewhat whitish spot on the
front of the neck, and a dark bill, this bird looked almost
uniformly very twany to them; it showed no specular; it was somewhat
smaller than the male mallard it was associating with; its shape and
the absence of markings on the back, wings and rump, allowed them to
conclude that it was not a Fulvous Whistling-Duck. Bernie concludes
that the bird is a puddle duck, but he and Jan could not determine
what it was; Bernie does not think it is an hybrid.
I wished I could have done a better job when I saw that bird, but as I
explained, the weather conditions were miserable and I could only see
parts of the bird, from far away. Apologies to anyone who might have
travelled long distance to try to see it.
Good birding to all.

Rondeau Bird Report - Saturday May 2, 2008
The spring birding season started off with a bang as a Harris's Sparrow
showed up yesterday afternoon. The bird was found by Dana Coffel, and
has now settled in at the Visitor Centre feeders. It is being seen regularly.
This may well be the same individual that was seen at Erieau in February,
but has now come into full breeding plumage. There are presently 9
species of sparrows in the vicinty of the Visitor Centre, including
Clay-colored and Lincoln's.
Warblers include a Prothonotary at the log pond (near the Pony Barn) last
weekend, as well as Friday and today, Yellow Warbler and Common
Yellowthroat arriving Thursday, Northern Waterthrush arriving today, and a
Hooded Warbler on Tulip Tree Trail seen today.
Other songbirds feature a mix of lingering birds and migrants from across
the lake. Several Hermit Thrushes are still present, while Wood Thrushes
have just showed up Friday. On the blackbird front, Rusty's were found in
full "song" on Tulip Tree Trail early this morning and Baltimore Orioles
arrived yesterday. Thursday was quite a good day for new species, with
first sightings for Brown Thrasher, Eastern Towhee, Marsh Wren and
House Wren. New today was Indigo Bunting. Rose-breasted Grosbeaks
are now present in good numbers throughout the park.
My reports will include regular updates on the Harris's Sparrow, as well as
other sightings.

Subject: [Ontbirds] Ruff, Long-billed Dowitcher and Hudsonian Godwit,
Minesing Swamp
From: "J SCHMELEFSKE" <j.schm(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 3 May 2008 10:52am
Lots of shorebirds this morning at Minesing including a Ruff with a black
head, a Long-billed Dowitcher and a Hudsonian Godwit in fine breeding
plumage. The Ruff and Dowitcher were on the west side of McKinnon Rd, just
past the Hydro right of way. The Godwit was at the end of the road across
from the house with bird feeders in the driveway.
There were hundreds of other shorebirds including both Yellow-legs, Dunlin,
Snipe, and Pectoral Sandpipers.
Directions;
Turn north on McKinnon Rd. which is off Hwy 90 at the eastern outskirts of
Angus. About a Km. up there is a large sod field on the left. Past this are
grassy flooded fields and a new construction corridor for a hydro
right-of-way. The Ruff and Dowitcher were on the west side of McKinnon Rd,
just past the Hydro right-of-way. The Godwit was quite a bit farther down
the road. As you proceed north the road becomes quite muddy and we parked
our car and walked the rest of the way, past the next concession road. The
road bends and then comes to a house with good bird feeders in the driveway.
Across from this house on the west side of the road is a wet grassy area
where the godwit was sitting with a bunch of Yellowlegs.

On our way to looking for the Mottled Duck this morning, Mike and I found an
adult Laughing Gull in a field opposite Wheatley Harbour. We saw the bird at
7:10am and watched it for several minutes before making our way south to
Hillman. When we returned at 8:15am the bird was gone.
At Hillman the Mottled Duck was seen, as well as a first-summer Little Gull.
Directions for Laughing Gull: head south from Muddy Creek on Milo Street,
the bird was on the west side of Milo at Kay Street (the first road).

From: Robert Cumming <robert.cumming(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 3 May 2008 5:27pm
I spent a very soggy hour and a half circulating in the Wet Woods in the north
west sector of the park. The fog descended and seemed to push the warblers down:
Ovenbird
Northern Waterthrush
Yellow Warbler
Palm Warbler
Black-throated Green
Black-throated Blue
Black-and-white
Chestnut-sided
Yellow-rumped
Cape May
Northern Parula
Tennessee
Palm
Others:
Gray Catbird
Brown Thrasher
Solitary Sandpiper
Wilsons Snipe
American Woodcock
Wood Thrush
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Brown Creeper
Blue-headed Vireo
Least Flycatcher
Rusty Blackbird
Eastern Meadowlark
American Bittern (North end of Wet Woods in swampy field)
Rose-breasted Grosbeak
Tommy Thompson Park (Leslie Street Spit) is at the south end of Leslie Street
in Toronto where it meets Lake Ontario. The Wet Woods are reached by walking
south west about 200 yards along informal trails. It is quite damp and rubber
boots would be useful.

From: "Giraud, Jacques" <jacques(AT)giraud.com>
Date: 3 May 2008 5:34pm
I went to the Minnesing Swamp just outside of Angus, Ontario to see if I
could find the Ruff mentioned over the last few days. With the help of a
few other birders, I found and photographed the 2 ruffs in flight and on
the ground. Unfortunately, the birds were about 75m away so the pictures
aren't that great. I also found and photographed the Hudsonian Godwit
further up the road. Pictures of the birds can be found at:

Other shorebirds of note included lesser and greater yellowlegs,
long-billed dowitcher, dunlin, solitary sandpiper. Also area in the area
were green-winged teal, Northern pintail, rose-breasted grosbeak, belted
kingfisher, and yellow-rumped warblers. I photographed a flock of
shorebirds in flight with 4 different species including the ruff that
can be seen here (it can be scrolled to the right):

A Google map with locations of the birds is available here:

From: "Giraud, Jacques" <jacques(AT)giraud.com>
Date: 3 May 2008 5:44pm
After the good luck I had with the ruff and godwit, I drove back to
Toronto where it was raining heavily. I decided to check out Col Sam
Smith to see if there were any birds downed by the rain and I wasn't
disappointed. Unfortunately, there was an event going on just next to
the bowl so I birder the woods next to the large smoke stack. It was
full of yellow-rumped and pine warblers as well as grey catbird,
ovenbird, white-crowned sparrow, white-throated sparrow, hermit thrush
and wood thrush.
I walked out to towards the lake and found 7 common loons, long-tailed
duck, horned grebe, red-necked grebe, tree swallow, barn swallow, mute
swan, double-crested cormorant, mallard, blue-winged teal, gadwall,
red-winged blackbird, grey catbird, song sparrow, savannah sparrow and
finally a bobolink. As I was standing in the rain, a lone osprey flew
over being harassed by a common tern.
Col Sam Smith is located at the base of Kipling St in Toronto.

We had a young male RB Grosbeak in our yard two days ago (May 1st) He
took a bath in our pond :)
Today we have a White-crowned Sparrow in our yard. I've been waiting
since hearing about others.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Cattle Egret & 12 Sparrow Day--Rondeau & Hillman's
From: "Irene Woods" <irewoods(AT)ciaccess.com>
Date: 3 May 2008 7:10pm
Birders: My calendar says it's May, but who would believe that !
After 10 hours of cold biting wind, cold showers, and thunderstorms,
Ann White and myself came up with ~ 80 bird species .
We had some help from our OFO hike guide, Maris Apse [thank you ].
As is often the case--our last bird was our pride and joy--
a stunning Cattle Egret in Adult Breeding plumage--6:00 pm on #3 Highway.
We saw many of the birds listed elsewhere today, but we were pleased
to have a 12 Sparrow day. This was a wet feat [wet feet ] indeed.

Subject: [Ontbirds]OFO at Rondeau Provincial Park May 3
From: "Blake A. Mann" <boatmann(AT)kent.net>
Date: 3 May 2008 7:42pm
Posting on behalf of Trip Leader Maris Apse (who is camping in Pelee
National Park this weekend)....
18 intrepid and enthusiastic birders joined Maris for a decidedly wet
day of early spring birding at Rondeau Provincial Park. In spite of the
inclement conditions, we managed to record a reasonably respectable 80
species of birds. Highlights included, but are not limited to:
*Warblers:* Nashville, Yellow, Magnolia, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated
Green, Palm, Black-and-White, Prothonotary ('killer' looks at the pond
near the Pony Barn), Northern Waterthrush (Tulip Tree Trail), Common
Yellowthroat and Hooded Warbler (a female seen on the Tulip Tree Trail).
*Sparrows:* We enjoyed a '7 sparrow species lunch' at the Visitor
Centre featuring a resplendent male Harris's in full breeding plumage,
and his Chipping, Clay-colored, Field, Lincoln's, White-throated and
White-crowned relatives. We also saw Field, Song and House sparrows
during the outing.
*Woodpeckers:* Red-headed (the lakeside portion of the South Point
Trail), Red-bellied, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Downy, Hairy and Northern
Flicker.

Hello all,
I also had the pleasure of having a beautiful male Rose-breasted grosbeak visit
my sunflower feeder at around 3:30 pm yesterday afternoon at the Bucke
Conservation Area (Kettle Creek Conservation Authority office). It was a
welcome addition to the regular visitors to me feeder. There are also many Wild
Turkeys around in the neighbouring fields.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Saturday, May 3 - birds
From: Glenn Steplock <nature_photography(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 3 May 2008 6:14pm
2-Northern Flicker, 1-Eastern King Bird, numerous Double-breasted Cormorant,
1-Northern Mockingbird, first spotted as it flying, slow wing flaps and white
patches and 6-brown-headed cowbird seen this morning in the fog at Ross G Lord
Park following my sons riding at CARD.
19:15 this evening I could see blue skies coming from the west, so I walked up
the corner to Headwaters Community Park for a brief outing. Song Sparrows,
counted 6, heard more. White-throated Sparrow, heard and watched one. This is a
bird I that brings back memories, as the only place I had ever heard and saw
the bird was each summer in my grandmothers backyard, Timmins, Ontario. I have
been hearing them in the neighbourhood for the last 2 years. Numerous Red-winged
black birds. One Great Blue Heron. Numerous American Goldfinch, and 2 very
large Beavers who have flooded the fields and clear cut the trees. The 2 large
reservoirs on Redstone and Shirley appear to have the Mute Swans setting up
nest.
Ross G Lord Park, Dufferin and Finch.
Headwaters Community Park, Richmond Hill, Major Mackenzie and Leslie.
P.S. my wife was at the ponds behind Walmart (Major Mackenzie and Frank
Endean/Cassata). She noted a "sea gull" that had a black cap on the head, black
wing tips with a very visible bright orange beak. I am heading over Sunday
morning for a look. Any thoughts as to what it might have been? Caspian Tern,
perhaps?

Subject: [Ontbirds]Mottled Duck - Hillman Marsh - May 3rd, 8 p.m.
From: "Alfred Adamo" <alfred.adamo(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 3 May 2008 10:43pm
The Mottled Duck was briefly seen in flight with two other ducks at about 8
p.m. and appeared to settle in Hillman Marsh but *not* in the shorebird
impoundment area. A Cattle Egret also flew in to roost in the marsh with
the gulls from the corn stubble field to the south of the impoundment area.
Dean Ware was going to leave some cracked corn out to hopefully attract the
ducks closer in for tomorrow.
Good luck!

neotropicals
From: The Murrays <murrbizdownunder(AT)mac.com>
Date: 3 May 2008 6:24pm
While walking the East Bank Trail in North Oakville today, a good
variety of spring migrants were observed, including many warblers
(Palm, B&W, Yellow Rumped, Magnolia, Black throated Green, Black
Throated Blue), Blue Headed Vireo, Kinglets, Hermit Thrush, Rose
Breasted Grosbeak.
Directions: The East Bank Trail follows the east bank (naturally) of
16 Mile Creek between Upper Middle Road and Dundas, in Oakville. It
can be accessed from both north and south ends, and along streets
west of Neyagawa in the middle. A good place to start is the parking
lot at the end of Old Upper Middle Road, which is west of Oxford and
Upper Middle Road.
