Rondeau Bird Report – Wednesday May 7, 2008 at 11 am
Good morning birders.
Warbler sightings today so far include Golden-winged, Hooded, Blue-winged,
Northern Parula, Wilson’s and Blackburnian. Although our ‘reliable’ Prothonotary
hasn’t been seen at the Log Pond / Pony Barn of late, there was a sighting on
the Spicebush Trail at 8:55 am.
Other passerines this morning include Yellow-throated Vireo, Orchard Oriole and
Rusty Blackbird. The Harris’s Sparrow, present at the Visitor Centre feeder from
May 2 – 6, has not yet been seen today.
As noted previously, we have had no additional reports concerning the
Scissor-tailed Flycatcher seen here on May 5. It was last seen just outside the
park sometime before 4 pm on May 5.
The hike on the Marsh Trail on Tuesday evening was quite productive, with
American Woodcock doing display flights in several locations, Soras calling, and
our first sightings of Whip-poor-will. It was a challenge to hear the night
birds over the incredible chorus of Spring Peepers and American Toads. Virginia
Rails, American Bitterns and Sandhill Cranes have also been heard calling in the
marsh. The highlight of the tour was a ‘scope view of the Bald Eagle nest, with
large chicks.
In addition to these avian first sightings of the year, we enjoyed a first
sighting of the thin crescent moon as well as observing the red planet Mars and
the rings of Saturn.
Good observing.

Prothonotary, Chat, Little Gull, and etc
From: Janice.Sarkis(AT)pc.gc.ca
Date: 7 May 2008 11:44am
Friends of Point Pelee provides daily updates of sightings within Point
Pelee National Park during the Festival of Birds May 3 through May 19, 2008
Another night of southerly winds brought a few new birds. And luckily a few
of the good ones from yesterday remained.
The number of birds continues to be moderate but there are a few good
pockets here and there throughout the Park.
At the Tip
A Little Gull was a flyby at the tip. People noted a Northern
Mockingbird. A minor reverse movement of birds into the southerly winds
produced a few hummingbirds and several Scarlet Tanagers among others seen.
In Tilden Woods
Once again a male Cerulean Warbler was located. Also there were reports
of Hooded , Tennessee Warbler and Louisiana Waterthrush. Also reported, a
Gray-cheeked Thrush and Philadelphia Vireo.
The Redbud Trail (off Woodland Nature Trail)
Especially in the cedars near post 17, a number of species were noted.
Cape May, Pine and Black-throated Blue Warbler, a White-eyed Vireo, and an
Ovenbird.
Woodland Nature Trail
A Prothonotary Warbler continues to be found near the first bridge going
south, between posts 16 and 15. Also see there, Rusty Blackbird,
Northern Parula and Northern Waterthrush. Also a Louisiana Waterthrush
was reported closer to Post #10.
Cemetery
A pair of Yellow-breasted Chat were seen there today.

hummingbird at N.Pick. feeder
From: "Doug Lockrey" <lockrey33(AT)rogers.com>

A coolish overcast morning in Thickson's Woods was wonderful for walking about,
listening for everything from warbler singing to excited cries from birders
announcing a "good" bird to the movements of earthworms understorey!!
Although numbers of birds was low, and the tree leaves are filling in, there
were some excellent sightings. Let me list some of the bird species seen during
the morning--- SCARLET TANAGER, red-eyed vireo, blue-headed vireo, swamp
sparrow, Lincoln's sparrow, Swainson's thrush, hermit thrush, wood thrush,
veery, Baltimore oriole, and among the wood-warblers-- chestnut-sided, northern,
parula, black-and-white, Cape May, ovenbird, GOLDEN-WINGED, ORANGE-CROWNED,
palm, pine, yellow-rumped, black-throated blue, black-throated green, Nashville
and Am.redstart. I do not believe the worm-eating warbler was noted--it had been
seen in various parts of the woods for 4 days.
Thickson's Woods is at the south end of Thickson Rd. which can be accessed
directly from the 401, in southeast Whitby.

Date: 7 May 2008 1:31pm
I forgot to refer to the locale of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird in my report
recently.
Betty Pegg has a wonderful feeder set-up in the backyard of her property, on
concession 7 (Pickering) at the southwest corner of Concession 7 and Westney
Rd.
At present she has regular visits by Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Baltimore Orioles,
Am. Goldfinches, House Finches (the Purples have not been seen recently),
Chipping Sparrows, among others.
On Sat.May 17 I will be meeting interested people to tour the property, the
prime purpose being to study the native wildflowers, but we will sneak in some
birding!! You are welcome to join the Pickering and Durham Field Naturalist
members as they meet me on this annual morning venture. Park in the Claremont
C.A. parking area across the street. I will be at Betty's at 0830--we start
formally at 0930.
Let me know by return e-mail if you wish to come.

Subject: [Ontbirds] Connecticut and Cape May Warblers, Toronto
Riverdale Farm and Necropolis
From: "Theresa Dobko" <dobko(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 7 May 2008 2:26pm
While the birding was very slow this morning at the Riverdale Farm and the
nearby Necropolis, there were two nice birds. In the Riverdale Farm, near
the pond at the very bottom of the Farm, there was a very elusive male
Connecticut Warbler low in the bushes. I had one good look before it was
chased away by a grackle and afterward I could hear its call for about 20
minutes but it did not emerge for another look. There were few other birds
today but there is a Belted Kingfisher that has been around for days and may
stay.
Across the street in the Toronto Necropolis there were a few more warblers
with a vibrant male Cape May Warbler in the North West corner of the
cemetery (the section on the left as you enter the main driveway). There
were also two Field Sparrows at the top of the hill above the "Scattering
Grounds" for the ashes.
There were also several Nashville, Yellow-Rumped and Palm Warblers about in
both sections but little else. The best spots for warblers in the Farm are
around the lower ponds and in the bushes along the middle path, just past
the archway for the buildings. In the Necropolis, the birds are usually
evenly spread but more pronounced along the fence lines on the upper level
and in the very far NE back corner.
The Riverdale Farm and Toronto Necropolis can have a surprising variety of
warblers on any good warbler day. Both are small areas that can be easily
birded before or after work. The Riverdale Farm opens at 9 a.m. seven days
a week and closes at 5. The Necropolis is open from 8 to 8 and can have
good late day birding.
Directions,
The Riverdale Farm and Toronto Necropolis are across the street from each
other just east of the downtown Toronto area. Take Parliament Street to
Winchester Street and drive east along Winchester to the very end, east of
Sumach and you can park for free on the north side of the street.

From: "Chris Kimber" <cmkimber(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 7 May 2008 12:05pm
For those still attempting to see the Mottled Duck at Hillman Marsh it may
be useful (if galling?) to know that it was seen this morning on the S side
of the shorebird/waterfowl cell in the company of a drake Mallard. The
birds flew in around 640am and spent their time on the water or taking short
flights in the vicinity of the cracked corn piles on the S dike. The bird
was still present when this observer left at 7am.
There were also 3 Cackling (Richardson's form?) Geese present on the
mudflats in the centre of the shorebird cell at the same time. The Wilson's
Phalarope female continues at the cell as well.
Good birding.

Ontbirders,
There was a 1st alternate, male Summer Tanager feeding [with many migrants]
near the road edge, along Stanley Line, in South Lambton Co.this morning.[May
7]
>From Hwy 40, travel 1.1 km west on Stanley Line, to the 1st substantial
woodlot on the south side of the road. The woods is opposite the Terra plant's
tanker car shunting yard. It's a fair-sized woods, so good luck.

Subject: [Ontbirds] Male Western Tanager, Northern Mockingbird,
Marbled Godwit - Sault Ste. Marie, ON
From: "McIlwrick, Ken" <kmcilwri(AT)NRCan.gc.ca>
Date: 7 May 2008 8:50pm
Hi folks,
Between 6:15pm and 7:15pm tonight (May 7, 2008) I observed and photographed an
adult male Western Tanager (that was actually first spotted by Jack Jones who
was walking his dog) that was actively feeding on bugs at the tip of Topsail
Island near Belleview Park, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. It once flew within 3
feet of me and seemed totally unconcerned about my presence. The bird was
subsequently observed by David Bell and Robert and Joanne Knudsen (well known,
active birders in the area).
Topsail Island is located off the eastern end of Belleview Park, which itself is
located at the end of Lake Street in Sault Ste. Marie.
The Marbled Godwit that I first reported yesterday was still present as of
6:30pm in the same bay just east of Belleview Park (see posting from yesterday).
Today at 12:30pm I also observed a Northern Mockingbird on the eastern tip of
Whitefish Island which is part of the Rapids complex of the St. Mary's River, in
Sault Ste. Marie.
David Bell indicated he could not find the Mockingbird at around 6:00pm tonight
but he had a Lesser Black-backed Gull in the waters in this same general
location.

Rondeau Bird Report – Wednesday May 7, 2008 – 9 pm
Good evening birders.
Warblers: A total of 25 species were seen today, including our first
Yellow-breasted Chat and Bay-breasted. Additional ‘good birds’ included
Blue-winged and Golden-winged. The best area was Bennet Road. High winds and
rain reduced the level of birder activity later in the day, although the birds
didn’t seem to mind.
Other interesting sightings today included the first observation of Black-billed
Cuckoo, as well as Yellow-throated Vireo, Orchard Oriole and Rusty Blackbird.
The Harris’s Sparrow, present at the Visitor Centre feeder from May 2 – 6, was
not reported today.
As noted previously, we have had no additional reports concerning the
Scissor-tailed Flycatcher seen here on May 5.
Good birding.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Zoch error-Mottled duck
From: Dean Ware <peleeisbirder(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 7 May 2008 7:10pm
Mr. Zoch et, al.
My name is Dean Ware and I am one of the "boys" who climbed the south bank and
also the one who found this duck in which you seek.
I know you do not know the waterfowl like I do at Hillman marsh so I will give
you a update on what is going on at the west cell/shorebird habitat.
Friday and Saturday the Mottled duck did not appear in the evening at the
shorebird cell- the bird just simply flew by to the east and for the most part
all the ducks flew to the east because they fed heavily at a nearby corn field
and headed in that direction to roost in the west cell(Hillman Trail).
So I Dean Ware took in upon myself to put down some corn so the Mottled duck
would stop at the shorebird habitat for even people like you to view and it has
worked. The Mottled duck and others now stop to feed briefly before ALL the
ducks do what they do every night and that is to fly to the east to roost.
Did Steve and I scare the ducks? The answer is NO. The ducks were simply leaving
after their fill as per usual.
I ask for a full apology to Steve and myself.

At 8:30 p.m. last night over 20 anxious birders stood on the norh dike, scanning
the skies and the shorebird cell searching for the Mottled Duck with no luck.
We then watched, distressed that everytime a group of people peeked over the
south dyke a large portion of the ducks in that area were flushed and we tried
to identify the birds as they disappeared quickly to the East. After several
"peeks" virtually all the ducks had been flushed out of the area. Noone was able
to find a Mottled Duck amongst a half dozen remaining birds. Over the next
fifteen minutes perhaps 5 to 10 ducks arrived and settled but none of the
hundreds of ducks that were flushed had returned and it was now to dark to
identify them.
Good for the boys that saw it. Bad for the many others that got to see the boys
but not the Mottled Duck. There must be a lot more flexibility in the OFO
guidelines of which I was not aware.
John Zoch,
Harrow

Subject: [Ontbirds]Mottled Duck, Hillman Marsh photos...
From: "Steve Pike" <stevepike.com(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 7 May 2008 8:09pm
I've uploaded 3 images of the Mottled Duck here...
http://stevepike.com/rarities.html
All necessary field marks of a non-crossed wild Mottled Duck appear obvious
in my opinion. We heard and saw this drake calling and did not see any leg
bands what-so-ever.
The images will be forwarded to the Ontario Rare Birds Record Committee for
further review including Dean's written documentation.
Thanks again Dean for another exciting bird!
Steve Pike
